The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.

Moliere

===============

Two weeks since the Smuggler Cave. Glory was on her way.

After Glory had arrived plans had already been made.
Glory was armed to the teeth and would be taking hard core 'WET' missions from the small independent group led now by 'Doc' Savac Gode. The other ship, Galiano, would be taking missions of a more stealthy nature.

and Silver Lass, she was taking the non-combatants away to safe havens.

Africa and Monte had been dropped off at Baroness.

Becker's eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched. There were moments in life which demanded a serious attitude, and Mike had been provoked into one. It had in truth been good to be back aboard Glory, even with a full crew, but now he had found adversity. Something which tested him, but he would not be beat by. He would not be bullied in his own home.

He raised a glass to his lips and swallowed water before making his call.

"That one." He pointed at a button on Glory's new panel. "I'm tellin' ya, that's the one that pulls up the heat locking... thing. I remember her showing me. But wait, you still have to lock on, that just... you press the..." Mike's hand hovered over a section of the panel, hoping to trigger a muscle memory.

"Gorram it!" Technology had bested him again. "Why can't you learn this so I don't have to?" he said to the cohort beside him.

"Me learn it? Christ. There's two things I'm good at, footy an' shootin' folk. You're the first mate why ain't you got this figured out? Besides it's clearly this switch you gotta hit first." Dom flicked the switch and immediately could hear something revving up but not in a good way. A screeching could be heard as metal scraped against metal and a warning light began to flash. He quickly turned off the switch and looked at Becker, his eyes wider than normal.

"Alright fine it ain't that one. Why don't these gorram things come with instructions?" He queried then realized what he said and quickly puffed up his chest as manly as possible before following up.

"So y'know I could burn 'em." Real men don't need instructions, even if they were needed.

"Wait wait. What if we push that button, then flip the switch and torque the throttle up an'... uh... little help here?" He was now getting himself buried in the many different buttons and switches and dodads. Why couldn't The Glory be like a Firefly. They used the same three switches for everything. Need a quick getaway? Those three switches, communications? Those three switches.

"Where are those bloody three switches?" Dom cursed aloud, realizing Mike hadn't been privy to his internal conversation. Clearing his throat he avoided eye contact as he continued to struggle to figure it out.

"Bloody Foster is who we need." He wasn't sure if Becker knew her but they had run with Ian around the same time and she would be infinitely useful at this moment.

Sylandra stood at the hatchway, watching the two of them struggling with the new guns panel. She shook her head sadly and smiled.

"Ain't like I didn't go over it like a dozen times. You ground pounders got nothin' on tech. Sus out what it takes, and then do it. "

Not like I don't know ground poundin' myself. Been in 'nuff scrapes for a woman my age. Rape, family dead, ships blown out from under me... every man I've loved; dead. Yeah, give me some Purplebelly to slit. I need my vengeance.

For a moment, a darkness crossed her face, and the smile turned lethal. Then she snorted and turned away, headed back down the corridor.

Abe heard the groan of things not happening quite right from the Galley. She knew exactly what it was and she headed up to the Bridge. She passed by Sylandra in the hallway, giving her a little nod as she did. When she arrived, she took in Becker and Dom and all of what they were doing. She also noticed the lights and which ones were blinking.

And they were definitely ones that shouldn't be.

Tzao gao!"she exclaimed, as she rushed forward. She squeezed herself in between them and righted everything to their standby status. "What the good gorram are ya tryin' ta do? Kill us all by blowin' the ship ta pieces?"

She looked back and forth between the two.

"This ain't rocket science boys," she said with a ghost of a smile. "Ain't nothin' but a big ole gun. Think of Glory bein' the part ya handle and them missiles as the bullets. This jus' has a couple more steps since they got thrusters in those bullets so they are just a little harder to aim."

She looked back and forth between the two.

"First, ya need to flip this switch to power it up and open the launch tubes. Think of it like taking the safety off and getting it ready to shoot. If'n ya don't do this it'll be like arming them missiles without giving them a place ta go," she explained, knowing that that was exactly what they just tried. "This button puts the missile in the tube. It's like loading yer gun."

She hoped they were getting it and that this explanation would help.

"Then this switch will turn on the display. It's basically like yer scope." she continued. "Ya use this toggle ta sight up yer target and then press this button ta send her blasting away."

She looked at them again.

"That help? Or do I need to label these?" she asked with a grin. "Sorry ya'll. I'm just kidding ya. It's really not that hard. You both can shoot a gun fairly decently, you can get this too. It's jus' bigger."

She bumped shoulders with one of them then the other.

"Ya'll get it. I got faith in ya'." she told them. "Jus' keep thinkin' that its jus' a big gun with big bullets. And if it has bullets, then you should be able to shoot it."

Then she stood there, waiting to see if they needed more.

"By the way, I call this one 'Big Ben.' Jus' thought it was a fittin' name," she continued. "The others are set up just like these, but I haven't spent enough time with them to figure out what they are ta be called."

Yep, she knew that naming the guns on the ship was a little nutsier than just naming her personal weapons and some folks might worry about her being crazy or something, but it was what worked for her. And it showed in her unfailing accuracy.

OOC: I hope I didn't overstep my bounds by making up the sequence needed to shoot the big guns. I figured an analogy would help out."

The noise that emerged when the switch was flipped was by no means what anyone would call a good noise. Despite that, Becker made no attempt to fix it. He waited for a moment, then stared at Dom as the sound continued to dig the man a hole. Finally the situation was rectified.

"Rikka was the instruction manual, and we dropped her on The Baroness."

As Dom tried a few more taps and flicks, Mike noted his choices and was confident in his lack of confidence in Dom's decision. He followed by flicking and tapping each unit back to it's original state. "I'm usually a fan of 'learn by doing' but I feel like we could end dropping Glory out of the sky. And this Syl's thing now, I don't wanna get on her bad side."

Soon after, Mike was left reeling by a 'three switches' comment. He leaned away from Dom while continuing to look at him with an eyebrow raised, but before that can of worms could be opened, Syl made herself known in the doorway.

Becker exchanged looks with Dom. "Ground pounders." The comment had amused him. Then, before that point could be discussed, Abe took her turn to assault them.

Mike raised his arms and leaned to the side so that she could reach the control panel and work what looked like magic to him. At one point Becker looked to Dom and mouthed the words, 'I told you it was that one,' then returned to listening intently. The explanation was cute, and all made sense... in theory. Whether it would stick was the question.

At the naming of 'Big Ben,' Mike raised his eyebrows then nodded in acceptance of what she favoured. He followed by clearing his throat then asking, "That labeling idea, is it completely out of the question?" Mike gave time for a response, maybe a laugh, maybe a scowl before moving on.

"Okay, how about this. As first mate I officially put you in charge of Big Ben and co. There's probably some fancy name you can put on that too."

Ian had been going over the new engines and other systems installed on Motherload. He had made sure to keep the old tech Manual Start system intact. It still connected the engine starter directly with ship's power in the advent of problems. It had saved their lives a time or two as well.

Even as he had spoken to Reese his eyes had drifted to her neck where the scar from Tyler Lyndon could still be seen ... barely ... if you knew where to look. He knew it was there because he had held the wound closed until help arrived. He had managed to get some spray on her but that was all.

He also still had the old Bacta Air System plus some new fangled Aux O2 system that was supposed to be better but that he could understand how. It was just too small to do anything. He had shaken his head and said that was enough for the day and left the engine room.

From the engine room he passed by and stopped at the Med Bay. Beth was there. Or had been a few minutes ago. he did go in, just looked from the door. But his Beth had come back. She was the love of his life at one time, then she too left.

He shook his head and moved away. He was glad his womanizing ways ended. Even if he hadn't realized he was one.

He passed Sly and still hadn't quite got a read on her yet. She came with Becker and Mike was his XO so she had to be good enough.

Syl didn't seem happy though... He had passed her and now stopped

"Sly. Got a minute, I need to ask you a question. It's one I ask all my crew."

It was time for The Question. Now was as good as any.

[- Syl, not Sly -- although that is probably due to auto correct. you should see what Sylandra comes up as when I try. :D -]

Sylandra stopped, cocked her head to one side and nodded slowly.

"Yessir. Guess you an me got just a bit of meet n greet t' do. Mike n I signed on t' bring Glory to ya. I got the intro t' the weapons system well as pilotin' kinks. Seems a nice bird, this 'n. "

She seemed to relax a bit, leaning back against the bulkhead with arms gently crossed. Her sleeveless blouse exposed the obvious bullet wound in her left shoulder, as well as other old scars along her waistline where the blouse hung above her belt. A bit of color peeked out of her waistband on her left hip; a tattoo that was hiding away.

Her blue eyes flashed with a touch of humor as she looked directly into his. Her fragrance hinted of soap and talc. Clean, but without the typical female vanities. Her hair, long enough but pulled back tight and braided into a long tail that reached to her shoulder blades.

Beth was struggling. There was still the question of Ian... Captain Dugan, there was the disturbing news from the Core which hadn't got any better since the first shocking announcements now two weeks in the past and then there was Glory's mission. She wasn't sure what it was but from the snatches of conversations she heard she knew that violence was not far away. Between it all, Beth was finding it hard to understand how she could fit in. She was a doctor, a healer, not a fighter and even her domination of the galley had been short-lived, ending as it had with Abbey's return to the ship.

Most of all though, there was the ghost of April haunting her. Beth had thought that new and very different surroundings and the passage of time, albeit counted so far in weeks, not months, would have eased the grief and guilt but if anything, they seemed to be getting stronger.

Hanging over it all was the fear that the first time someone was injured and blood was involved that she wouldn't be up to doing what was needed. Other than the dressing the odd minor cut, which had left her feeling queasy, she hadn't tested her surgical skills since leaving the hospital four years previously.

Some days it was all she could do to leave her cabin to make brief and furtive, mouselike forays into the ship in search of food before scurrying back to the safety of her nest or to the medway. Neither place gave her the feeling of belonging. She still felt like an interloper in someone else's medway, a temporary guest in the cabin and that she was trapped in some sort of time loop.

The nights, after her eyes could no longer focus on the novels and medical journals that she devoured to focus her mind on something, anything other than her demons, were the worst. Then she would dwell on April and the manner of her death and the what-ifs that might have prevented it and invariably she would cry herself into a fitful, restless sleep that did little to refresh her for another lonely day.

It was all silly and unnecessary; a little courage, a little encouragement would change all that but Beth made both hard. Perhaps knowing that Ian considered or at least had considered her the 'love of his life' might have made a difference but she was as ignorant of that as she was lacking in courage.

Fate too seemed to be taking a hand; when Ian had passed by the medbay she had been locked in self-imposed isolation in her cabin and it was only after he had passed on that she had ventured the short distance from her cabin to the medbay, busying herself with another round of unnecessary stocktaking.

When Africa and Monte left Glory on Baroness, Jasper Daltry had come on board.

He'd contacted Ian Dugan, and Dugan said come on. Jasper and Ian had spent a little time in the prison mines. They watched each other's backs until Jasper's connections got him out and back into the front lines.

Which Jasper was none to happy about, but the Family wanted him there to assist in theft of goods from the supply lines. He got caught, again; and went back to jail.

.....

Posted Image

Off course he had no trouble answering Captain Dugan's question in the affirmative.
That was easy.

Since he'd been on board Jasper had been taking stock of the situation.
Belker was right out, she belonged to the captain. Don't mess with the boss's squeeze.
Cobb looked like she'd rather kill him than... well just about anything.
The Doc and Engineer were way to petite for his tastes.
That left Godwin. That was a full on Woman.

His time was mostly smiling nicely and working his butt off. Engineer Foster kept him busy giving orders, otherwise she seemed aloof. What she needed was a nice hard one on a soft bed.

Maybe if Godwin shoots him down.... best to leave one's option open.

"Ain't like I didn't go over it like a dozen times. You ground pounders got nothin' on tech. Sus out what it takes, and then do it."

Dom gave a bit of an eye to the woman, Syl her name was. You could throw all the technology at problems you want but when sitting in a foxhole during a night filled with as much mortar fire as there was torrential downpour and the go se locator beacon meant to give a bead on their camp was off by fifty meters and landed your supplies in the enemy camp well it left a sour taste in your mouth. Maybe Dom was too old school for his own good, he still remembered the chuckles of his squad namely Lear and Nik when he pulled out a pencil and a paper map to draw out advancing tactics. The good ol' days he supposed.

Shortly after Abe also intervened, seemed the women all had a grasp of this technology. As she explained everything for the third, fourth or possibly fifth time Dom caught Becker give him a look and voicelessly utter words similar to 'I told you so' Dom could do nothing but shrug in return.

"That labeling idea, is it completely out of the question?"

He'd taken the words right out of Dom's mouth, Dom even had a pencil handy if one was needed for the writing of these labels... then again these womenfolk probably had some sort of machine for that too which made his pencil shrink in his pocket.

Dom leaned back against the hull and let Becker make what was likely his first XO proclamation and one that Dom fully backed, he hoped they wouldn't need to rely on him firing this thing or it might be a short war for them.

"Well you folk seem to have this in order, I'm off t'make myself useless somewhere's else. Behave kids." As he left he passed by Ian and Syl, giving each a nod on his way. Seemed an awkward human necessity, the nod of acknowledgement. Was it necessary or just a kindness or simply a programmed part of the human psyche.

Nonetheless he found himself wandering into the engine room where he was shocked to not only find the new guy Jasper but also little Reese. Last he had seen she'd faded off into the mist. Guess someone had changed her mind. It was good though, that she was here. When he'd left the ship previously he had gone and sought her out, finding a drug-addled shell of the once beating heart of this old ship. By the look of her she hadn't taken his advice. Still on the drops most likely, then again who was a recovering alcoholic to say what other people should do.

"Mornin' folk... or whatever time it is. How's things settlin' in here?" He spoke to both but he couldn't help to scan Reese who was still much more emaciated than he'd like to see but it didn't seem to affect her abilities as she was tearing things apart and somehow reassembling them with less parts. The lad was the same, more than a few beads of sweat on his brow.

Reese looked at him but only offered a shrug in response as she fiddled.

Ian nodded to Dom as he passed on his way to the Engine room and brought his attention back to Syl. He studied her a minute more and nodded his own head in aggrement to some question he had asked himself.

"From what Mike has said in our talks of what brought him back this way, I can see that you're good at what you do. You'd make good crew, here, if ya wanted. Ta me, crew is family. I live by that. That an everybody deserves a second chance, whether they do or dont. That one tends to bring trouble sometime."

He paused and took a slow breath.

"Before someone becomes my brother or sister, or family to the rest of the crew they have ta answer one simple question. Well ... one question. Some might not agree to it being simple or not."

He had looked away and back as people do when they say 'Well...' .

"I dont want a answer right now. Think on it and get back ta me later, but the answer will tell me if your family or a passenger on my ship."

He paused to let that sink in.

"The question is this. Would you die to let someone else on this ship live? "

He turned to continue his trip to the bridge and caught a whiff of of a half remembered scent.

'Beth.' he thought

His heart raced as he turned to look back toward the Med Bay and caught a glimpse of her hair as he disappeared into the room.

"Think about it and let me know."

He completed his turn and moved away, his voice not quite as steady as he'd hoped and his face slightly flushed.

She had to hand it to them, Dom and Mike listened to her quite readily, but she wasn't sure if they were getting it.

"That labeling idea, is it completely out of the question?"

Her jaw dropped as she looked between the two men. It was confirmation that they indeed were having trouble.

"I... I was just kidding about the labels," she started, but changed tactics smooth enough. "But I guess it could be done. Anything to help. You never know who might be called upon to man the station."

She squinted at the panel and started to work out a way to actually label them when Mike spoke again.

"Okay, how about this. As first mate I officially put you in charge of Big Ben and co. There's probably some fancy name you can put on that too."

She was flattered and the thought of being around Big Ben and Co. gave her a weird kind of butterfly like feeling in her stomach. She turned and gave Mike a full megawatt smile.

"Do I get some fancy title then too?"

Dom made his goodbyes and Abe nodded at him in acknowledgement. She turned back to Mike.

"'Course, we should make sure that the Capt'n don't mind if'n we mark up his ship."

She looked up to see the man himself down the hall talking to Sylandra. She indicated to Mike that she would be right back and made her way to him, but stopping short when she realized he was having "the Talk" with her.

"The question is this. Would you die to let someone else on this ship live? "

It was not her place to listen in, so she fell back into the crew galley and looked around for some leftovers. She knew how to cook and did it well, but it was not something she liked to do. It reminded her too much of home and revisiting that backwater experience was not something she'd like to do ever again.

Upon finding nothing, she picked up a protein bar and unwrapped it.

"We need a cook," she groused in a low voice.

She took a bite and chewed it quickly before moving to the door and peeking out to see if Ian was finished. He had and was moving away. She hoped that the Talk and the Question went well. Sylandra seemed to be quite proficient at her job.

So Abe leaned up against the doorway, chewing on her protein bar while watching Ian.

Lord the man looked good.

Slow, Abe, slow she thought.

Abe was not the only one watching Ian. Beth had heard the sound of voices drifting along the corridors and sneaking around into the medbay. She had peaked out, looking to see if Ian was heading her way or if it was safe to go the few steps back to her own cabin. She watched Abe watching Ian, her inferiority complex reinforcing her belief that Abe had some greater claim on Ian. Beth didn't know whether to be jealous or relieved that she could wait out the time until Glory made landfall somewhere safe.

"I really should have gone with Africa and Monte," she thought but like everything else in her life, she only seemed to understand what she should have done way too late.

Abe had said: "We need a cook"

"Perhaps that is something I could do, Abe" Beth said quietly, having made her way to the entrance to the galley. "There seems little enough else for me to do. There are only so many times one can check the medical supplies before losing all touch with sanity," she added.

"And I have a tenuous enough grip on that as it is," she thought.

"Yeah yeah, like..." Mike put roughly ten seconds into thinking one up. "Well I'm not good with words." The best that had crossed his mind was Person In Charge Of Large Guns.

Practically one after the other, Dom and Abbey both departed, though the latter seemed to express that she was coming back. Mike gave each a nod and was then left on the bridge and considering how quickly the bridge had filled up, and how quickly it had then emptied. his eyebrows lowered for a moment, and he raised his hand in from of his face before proceeding to release a heavy breath and try to sample with his nose. Finding no issue, Becker felt confident that he wasn't the reason that he was now alone on the bridge.

He then took another look at the weapons panel, he didn't wish to keep count of which time it was. As he pondered over what it all meant again, he decided to try something . "Okay. Loud your gun." He reached out for a particular button. "No!" He yanked his hand back. "Safety off first," he gestured as if flicking the required switch, "then load your gun," and hovered his hand over the button to simulate pressing it. "Get your scope..." His hand hovered over a vague area, trying to sense what his next action should be.

"Go se." He took a hold of his drink and threw himself back into the co-pilots chair. "Just make sure Abe never leaves the ship," he told himself before taking a drink.

"That is a good idea."

Ian spoke as he entered the Bridge and made his way to the main chair.

"She give you the 'make like its just a big gun...' speech?"

He paused for an accent.

"It's not a bad idea, as far as it goes. The system does quite a lot more."

He turned to his own console and began tapping the keys for the computer system. Soon Mike console blanked and came up again looking like the Weapons console, complete with labels....

"Use this mock up until you get familiar with the real one. This way you wont blow us up by pushing the wrong button."

He looked over at his second and smiled.

"I just asked her the question."

He knew that he didn't need to elaborate more. Not with Mike. Neither as to what question or whom he had asked.

"Felt it was time."

He turned forward and looked out into the Black. You couldn't see it, but changes were happening right now.

"Can you believe they wanted to make me a General??"

He paused, still looking outward. It was safer than looking the other way, sometimes.

"We should get our mission soon enough. You ready for this?"

Sylandra paused while Ian returned to the bridge. If only he knew.

She followed a short distance behind, watched as he and Mike addressed the issue of the weapons controls. She stood in the hatchway, just paying attention to the two of them. With Beth and Abe both in the galley, she felt this was a good time to address the Question with both Captain and XO.

"I sus the need to know your crew is ready to give life for each other. I honor that. I've lost people close to me ... *sigh* ... really close to me, and I would give anythin' to have them survive. Ta ma Ai ya, hwai leh . Even had a ship blown out from under me. " She took a deep breath before continuing. "The answer is: if you'll have me, I'll do what'er it takes t' keep crew 'n' ship safe. I'm a good pilot 'n' pretty good with weapons. I've trained in demolitions 's well as booby traps 'n' security systems. I've had more combat than is might seem for my age. I've my own demons, but I'm willin' to fight others' as well. "

She held out her hand to Ian in sign of trust and honor. Her facial expression was firm and a wetness showed in her eyes.

Reconsigning the voice, Mike tilted his head to the side to see Ian come into view and take a seat. "Yeah. She's got a thing for guns ain't she?" he commented with a smirk, finding the whole thing curious. It was an interesting quirk, especially for a girl, but maybe not that especially, he just found his thinking to be a little old fashioned sometimes. He knew better in his heart. "They all got names now and everything."

As Mike was speaking, Ian was tapping away at the consoles he was much more adept with. Then his techno-wizardry brought up an interface that fitted an early request. Becker's eyes widened as he finished his sentence and the console changed. "You're kidding me?" As Ian continued, Becker looked over the tweak, shaking his head as he went.

Mike leaned back and grinned. "Ahh. You know I tried that on my ship. Well... I wussed out. I mean it's a hell of a question. Plus you know, you really own that."

Hell they should make you Wizard of the 'Verse. Everyone would follow ya." Mike liked this. Up on the bridge, shootin' the wind. With good company it was hard to get bored off.

A little more serious. Becker cleared his throat and allowed a moments contemplation. "You know, I think I've learned to be ready to not be ready. 'Cause we'll get some curveballs. But after all, we are best on our feet."

After Mike and Ian had made a few exchanges, Sylandra made herself known. Seemed she'd had enough thinking and listening time. Mike jerked his head toward her, indicating it was Ian's thing. He was interested to see Ian's response. Mike remembered him having an aversion to fast answers, but Syl was making a good case. As she made her final statement, Mike glanced to Ian. She was good folk, and Mike had vouched for her based on experience. She had his approval.

As Sly finished making her case Ian had turned toward her and listened. When she finished and offered her hand he spoke first to Mike.

"Just so ya know, that's just a training program. The real one still doesn't have labels."

By this time he had stood and move in front of Syl, her hand still outstretched. He looked at it and up to her eyes and nodded once. He took her hand in his and not only shook it but pulled her into a quick but heart felt hug.

"Welcome to the family. Syl."

He backed away a step.

"You're home now and Glory will never turn her back to you or close her doors ... "

He looked past her to a person with red hair who had died so many years ago.

"Never."

The comm system lit up and he turned back to the main chair. He tapped in a code and read his message. He stood up and offered his seat to Syl.

"Pilot, make your course to Bellerophon. We have a building ta blow up. XO, gather the crew in the galley and I'll lay out what we'll be doing."

He stepped over to the ladder and climbed up.

"When everyone's ready give me a holler. I'll be in my cabin."

"We're what-ing what now?" The answer would come in due time, but Mike's curiosity was certainly peaked.

Mike looked over the panel. At least he knew how to do this one. He held down the shipwide comma button.

"Everyone to the galley. Crew meeting in five minutes."

Releasing the button, he looked over to Sylandra and smiled. "Glad you could stick with us." It was especially nice that someone he'd pulled into his crew was now a part of Glory. It showed it at least had some taste. "And maybe that demolitions training will come in handy." Becker pulled himself up and out of the chair, then headed off the bridge to find anyone who missed his message, or anyone ignoring it.
