Captain Eli, Carrie , and Monte have completed their first delivery and with their first real payday as a crew there is a sense of accomplishment with how clean they pulled the job off. Having just been in a massive brawl involving six thugs Africa, the newcomer, and Kenji have saved the Companion Daiyu. A single shot rang out on the farthest edge of the encampment. There was a cry and a response shot that sounded like the Sheriff's Peacemaker. A blast of a shotgun rippled across the open field, shredding sagebrush not far from Africa's position. There must be something out there; a medium distance away, but something that Monte must have been focussing on. Apparently, his dodge to bring out the thugs; a subterfuge that he now took a chance to break in order to send shredders from his shotgun in order to mark the target. Africa sized up the open ground between her and the marked position. A growl could just barely be heard, and then a soft, hoarse whisper that called out to the unconscious men at her feet. "Jab it, Guz! Why ain't 'cha firin' at them lawmen? Get a push on! " A good 200 meters. And open the whole way. |

Africa tossed a couple of the weapons away into some bushes, took a rifle and after examining the mechanisms fired off a few shots over the heads, far over the heads of the her camp. what to do? "Monte?" she called out quietly back to where she thought he might be. These gun fighting tactical situation were completely alien to her. Up close where she could see an opponent... an enemey; she could intuitively see by each twitch, motion, breath what they would do; how they would do it. But here in the scrub of open country? Africa pulled a jacket from one of the unconscious men, then thought to make a quick check of both pockets for any identification, documents or other items. She took no money of course. Then she put on the jacket and the man's hat, pulled it down over her eyes leaving her hair open in the back. Hopefully her crew would know her, and then with reckless abandon she jumped from cover and ran toward the location, or what she perceived to be, the location of the rest of those that had come to kill her. The rifle safety was off, her finger near the trigger. She had never done something like this; yet if felt right. But still, it seemed foolish. |

Three long strides brought Africa along the uncertain ground; darkness all around except for the brief flashes of gunfire from the deeper darkness ahead of her, and the returning fire from the camp site. She felt her foot hit something loose, a rock or thick branch, and she caught herself before it threw her off balance. She slid slightly to the right and continued. Then, from the deeper darkness ahead of her, suddenly there was a large bulk smashing into her, knocking the wind out of her and instinctively, she rolled to her good side, tucked into a shoulder roll as she hit the dirt. Allowing her momentum to throw her further out of danger, she came back up onto knee and foot, the heavy rifle coming around to point toward the blockage. The shape of a man, perhaps six foot and 250-280 lbs... had come out of the target brush, apparently heading toward the two she had left. He grunted in response to her interruption of his mission, and turned toward her. A glint of light illuminated the heavy pistol hanging loose in his hand as he started to raise it. |

This was what she was going to do right? what she had planned? just a little adjustment of the rifle, flick that safety switch, no - wait, it was already off. Then shoot him. It wasn't one of theirs. 'theirs' that made it alright then. Killing them that's to kill you, that's what they'd say in town. they'd be heroes. But she knew she wouldn't pull the trigger. She quickly flipped the rifle perpendicular and tossed it at the man, just far enough to hinder his raising his pistol. She stepped defiantly forward. And used the voice. - - - - the voice, learned long ago, . early in training, and later too... .... "power and a lower octave, projection and purpose to your words. Let your Chi project with the sincerity of the command. And be sincere. Be true. Your Chi will carry like a hammer, your words will ring true. But only if they are!" - - - - Africa knocked the hat off her head, revealing who she was. And in the voice... what she was: "Enough killing. More blood brings no one here anything they value." Africa was close enough, if the gun moved in violence she could strike it, maybe, with a reaction of her foot. He was big, though not slow, and she had put her energy in the words. In the voice.

![]() The man's face was dimly lit by gun flashes in the background. His eyes seemed to reflect those glints as he smiled, an almost evil grin. He let the pistol roll around his trigger finger, the barrel dropping toward the ground. It hung there, loose in his hand, dangling harmless from his one finger. "Why, babe, I don't mean no harm to such a lovely little thing such as yourself. " He glanced back over his shoulder, toward the campsite. "Now, you wouldn't be associated with those lawmen types back there, would you?" |

Africa tried to show she was relaxed as possible, not a threat; but given that a relaxed position is exactly the continuous ready state she had learned long ago, it looked a little like nervous shrug. The gun dangling still looked dangerous in his hand, he was quite capable in making it deadly and firing with a slight movement of his wrist. A circular movement she understood well, the foundation of much of her 'slow hand' martial training. "We're all part of the same boat crew, except for the Sherrif, he's the only lawman." She looked around his shoulder, 'where's Monte?'. Africa's feet moved a little as she did so, an attempt at a slight stealthy move to get her just a little close. Just close enough that any movement of that gun and hand making a concerted effort to go from dangerous to deadly could be countered. The movement required envisioned in her mind, his stance, body position, his own shifting weight and center of gravity all registered in the quiet center of her dormant reaction. Other possibilities flowed quietly through her while she smiled calmly, she truly wanted no violence; but the kinetic deadlyness of her reaction to the man's next move was prepared. A sweep of the foot, her own circular motion would strike his wrist with the edge of her left foot. A perfect motion hitting a paralizing and painful nerve, a unperfect motion or if the man was faster than his pusle rate and tone suggested at least a hit and knocking away of the weapon. In either case she would then step in without mercy strike his throat in a cobra strike with her right knuckles. "Two men shooting at us," she motioned with her head as her weight balanced, the motion suggesting she was not. "are unconsious. I hope that my ... associates won't have to hurt the rest. We just want to help stop all the harm coming to the town." ![]() |

![]() The man smiled. "Sod busters and range owners. Land is free and needs t' be open. My... associates... and I; we believe in freedom. And if we need to tussle a few heads to make our points, well, that's our freedom to do so. " He thumbed back toward the campsite. "Sheriff and his sort just wants t' hunt us down and toss us in the hoosegow. Ain't none o' your business, now, is it?" Another volley of shots rung out and a cry of pain from the distance. The sherif calls out, "Hands up and come out! " |

((OOC: jeez I'm sorry I missed this... late. late late)) "You're right, freedom is important." Africa knew there were too many sides to this, this man seemed sincere. He wasn't just a bandit, he was fighting for something. "But if you and the town don't work it out over a cold beer calm and peacefull like, then there's just going to be blood until there isn't anything for anyone. This isn't the first time folks have butted heads over fences and open range. No one ever came out better fighting about it." She was more than a little amused at the tone of her voice, a gentle rim country pitch to it. Not a false voice at all; true words only were spoken. The calm in her voice was settling. "It that's something you'd be willing to try, I'll go and speak to my Captain and the Sheriff, tell them you'll agree to sit down and talk it out." She stepped forward to the hardened man, put her open hand against his face. "It's harder to step back and find a way to live. A long life for you and your loved ones though, way better than never losing some pride." If he didn't prevent her, Africa moved off and called out, "Sheriff, Monte, Captain... we're done here. Let's move back to town." It wasn't for her to say, wasn't what a boat crew should be doing; taking sides. If her crew didn't agree, then... it'd be early time to part ways. |

![]() As she touched his face, he smiled, but there was something not quite right in the twinkle of his eyes, barely showing the reflection of the camp fire some distance away. As she started to turn away and call out to the Sheriff, he holstered his gun, touched the edge of his brow and stepped backward into the darkness. Aftica startled, and stepped toward where he had stood, but there was no further sign of him. Moments later, the Sheriff and Monte arrived. The Sheriff commented, "My deputies are gathering up the others. Seems they don't care to pursue gettin' all shot up when the ambush went sideways. Thanks, for helpin' out. " Monte and Africa return to the Reyne, but find it deserted. |

The stranger moved quick, she noticed the touch of his brow; a very civil gesture that impressed her. Then he moved, quickly around a tree and was gone in the bush and the dark. Less impressed with that; but the man's manner. He seemed honorable.... an honorable man doing things that perhaps he didn't want to resort to. Such men and women seemed to fill the empty black. She thought on this, the codes of honor that she had seen; even from a man that had been part of an ambush on local legal authorities. So many stories behind everything. 'judge not less ye be judged'. Monte and the Sheriff found her, she told them all she could, in detail; right down to her impressions of the stranger. It was clear, at least to Monte, that this sort of vigilantism was not to her liking. That there were suspicians as to who was right, if anyone was.... that it was beyond making judgements. Something outsiders shouldn't be interferring with, at least until they had an understanding much better than they had before they started on this 'hunt'. "there's a billion storis out here isn't there..." she said as she took his hand on the way back to the ship. "... can't hear them all, but I hope I learn something from the ones I do." He hand gripped a little tighter than it had before, she pulled a little closer. Her mind went clear as what she had experienced was left to the subconscious; her thoughts were left to the walk and the closeness of this man she had come to trust. Come to ... she smiled as she comteplated that for a moment. ==== At the ship Africa made checks to esure it was black ready. It was. She showered and changed into comfortable cloths. ![]() Then she waited at the ramp. Where was the Captain? "Any sign?" |

Monte had checked the engines to ensure they were untampered. That's when he spotted the flag on the main console repeater. He grimaced and shook his head. Turning on his foot, he bundled up his tools and tossed them into his duffle before heading back out toward the cargo ramp. Seeing Africa there, he smiled and again shook his head. "She's landlocked. Don't know what the situation is, but it looks like our time here is at an end. I'm packing out and looking for a new venue." He dropped his tool duffle at the top of the ramp and waved back toward the stairwell leading bak to their cabins. "Care to join me in gathering our personal items?" |

Africa found Monte checking the engines, not for function but for sabotage. She had already felt the finality of it. The flow of her life no longer meandered through Grey Reyne; instead it rushed somewhere outside the ship, over a horizon where she could not see. While Monte did a bit more looking about she gathered a few things and packed light, the bulk of her other things she put in a trunk and left outside the ship for storage, maybe to send for later. While she packed her things she found herself gathering his things as well, A small case and backpack for them; everything sorted just so. They could take speed with the backpack, the nice to haves in the cases. Finally she gathered her own tools and met him at the top of the ramp. "Care to join me in gathering our personal items?" She leaned in close to him and bumped him with her shoulder, pointed at the backpacks and cases over to the side. Outside the docks were getting busy. "any particular direction you have in mind?" Nothing had been said about them being together. It had somewhere, somehow become understood. She liked that, this lack of need to put things into words that could never be perfectly expressed. They were more than pals, not yet lovers. But they were in no hurry, not for anything. And yet they walked away looking forward to everything. |

Lupin strolled back to the ship. He had a failure of a day, the woman from last night never showed up in front of her hotel as planned, which left him spending the day across the street reading the same news over and over while going through a pot of coffee and a pack of cigarettes. Having wasted the day waiting only a short intermission to walk around in search for the her. And while couldn't be faulted it certainly did sting. Now he approached the ship with tail between legs and it began to appear that his day was about to get worse. There was no one inside when he arrived and when he looked for others there were signs that others had left and the ship was landlocked by the authorities. Not being one to confront the law himself he figured this was going to be the end of his unpaid voyage aboard the Reyne. Not being one to burn any bridged he left a note to the captain explaining what happened, how to get in touch and how next time he sees him he'll be buying the first round. With just his bug out bag of supplies and clothes that he came in with he walked down the ramp and into the port in hopes of finding passage to a more suitable environment and possibly even finding a crew to join. He smirked with confidence as figured how he can pad his resume by hacking into the ship registry logs kept by the alliance. He was now excited about his next job be it legal work or just another con. |

Monte stopped at the station's storage center and registered two compartments. Given the lock sets, he stashed his and Africa's gear and secured them. Turning away, he smiled at her and tucked her under his arm. "Let's get a drink and discuss our future." As he turned, he spotted a familiar face in the approaching crowd. He hesitated a moment and then waved the man over. "Lupin! Come join us. We were just heading to a bar to wet that dust out of our throats." |

Lupin eyed the small sights to take in as he strolled though the crowd. Nothing useful to see really, if he tried he could try to make a small haul but only enough to pay for a couple of days in a hotel from the look of the locals. So with such slim pickings he figured today would be best spent figuring out what to do next. It was as he was deciding when he heard his name and a friendly face. Waiving back he replied, I'll be right there. He still had to navigate his way trough a small sea of people but after a couple of minutes he caught up. The prospect of a bar was appealing at the moment specially if it met picking the brains of others to find out what was happening or at least what their own plans were. |

The bar was dim and stuffy, typical for the traffic from the Starport. Rough edged spacers and rogues looking for a slice of profit; they gathered around in small knots at tables or along the S curved bar. Three 'tenders served drinks and one waitress worked her way through the throng to take orders or deliver sustenance to her patrons. The heaviness of the atmosphere only added to the darkness of the establishment. Some places just feel that way. Monte, Lupin and Africa found their way to the corner table, deep inside and away from the outer edge of the crowd. Only one man gave them a glance as they slithered their way past his table to the loneliness of the corner. Monte slid a small pamphlet out of his vest pocket and spread it out on the table in front of him. A wet spot caught his attention and he swiped his hand across it, smearing the moisture away. "Alright. I don't know what happened with the Captain and the rest of the crew, but it looks like we're on our own. I've a contact that I can reach who can give us a lift off planet, but it might be a few days wait. My thoughts are to head over to Motherload. There's a antiques dealer there that I've done business with before. Sometimes things come into the light that are worth pursuing, but you've got to be in the right place to pursue them." He smiled at Africa and then turned toward the other man. "What's your thoughts? Have any currently planned arrangements?" |

Monte helped sort things out, an attempt of location - much less pursuit of the Captain had been fruitless. So now they were in the tavern. One like all the others it seemed, how many millions of these saloons were there in the verse? A lot more, she liked them though. People apparently minding their own business but on the lookout for danger. And opportunites. Speaking of both, Lupin had rejoined them and Monte had presented a plan on the fly, one well thought out and appealing. These two men, well versed, she smiled at that double meaning, well versed. They were that though. They had no real direction other than the next gig, another job. No real destination in mind. Independent, brazenly so. And yet they too had a sad longing about them, waiting for that destination they had no hope of ever defining. There was a lost generation, no, generations. Out here in the black where even these saloons were a welcome familiarity of civilization. "What are your thoughts? Have any currently planned arrangements?" Monte asked after presenting his plan. "Yes." Africa replied, her eyes twinkled. She made a couple decisions, these would be her traveliing companions. "I'm going where you go." she added. "I do hope you'll come," she turned to Lupin, "maybe even tell us your real name?" She raised an eyebrow, then looked back at Monte. oh yes, Africa Chamberlain flushed, she had a definite planned arrangement for him.

"What's your thoughts? Have any currently planned arrangements?", Lupin thought over Monte's suggestion over a cigarette. He slowly took in the white smoke before releasing it gently upwards towards the ceiling. A couple of drags later he came to a conclusion that he didn't have anything to loose long as there were any signs of civilization and if he didn't have to go back to the skyplex where he was picked up. Sighing he answered after his brief assessment, "I don't have anything better. so I guess I'm on board." He leaned back into his seat and took another drag from his cigarette as he thought about just what he might have agreed to. Looking at the other two he smiled knowing that he was going to be in good company. Then answering Africa's question he tried to clear the air. "Well frankly I don't know my name, not my birth name that is. I never knew my parents so the orphanage named me Arsenč cause I was a boy and Lupin for some unknown reason. But I always guessed it was because of the flower garden they had." Smiling he started smoking again and fallowed, "And that's my big secret" |
