Africa moved first, slow to the horses. It had been a long time she had been around one. She stroked a nose, ran her hands over neck and sides. One felt more at ease with her, and she with it. Calm and without hesitation she put a foot in a stirrup and mounted up. With barely a movement of the reins the horse turned and moved away from the others. Then the lightest of taps and the horse moved to a slow trot and circled out and back to the others. "We like each other. What's her name?"

Monte had dressed in heavy jeans, a dark shirt and a lined coat over his dual shoulder rig. Both of his auto loaders were packed and ready. Spare clips tucked into his belt pouches. A spare canteen as well as a personal med kit hung on his other hip and a heavy shotgun was sheathed on his back, ready for action. He approached the horses just as Africa claimed hers, and watched for a moment before climbing his, easy and comfortable in the saddle. He looked around at the rest of the team, waiting on Eli to join. |

For her part, Carrie was already on high alert. They were still in town and she was trying to key herself down, but the idea of playing the law was yet another first for her. And then there was the vibe she was picking up from Eli, and had been since the morning 'confrontation' on the ship, about one of the new faces. It had her on a slight edge, which wouldn't be good for riding, or so she'd once been told. And, if she was completely honest with herself, she was scared to death of riding a horse. There wasn't a ship in the verse that scared her, save for maybe a reaver ship, and she was comfortable in just about any setting. But sitting on the back of a living animal and using it to get somewhere just made her nervous. Just don't fall off... The mantra had been repeating in her head all the way to the sheriff's office and had doubled in frequency upon seeing the horses. It was Africa who quelled it all. The young woman had simply just climbed up and seemed completely fine and at home on the creature. Carrie had to admit, the horse looked beautiful in motion, a sentiment she usually reserved for a turning engine. While she hadn't exactly been frowning the whole way, a more full smile grew as the tension and nerves about riding faded. "Born natural, you are, Ricca. As if I wasn't gonna look bad enough tryin' to ride as is it." The jest drew out the lopsided grin. Whether she looked bad riding or not, Carrie wasn't going to back down now. If Africa had managed it, she could too.

"Try that one." said Africa point to one of the blacks. "Gelding will bow down to your will." Africa smiled. Her way was soft and easy. The black horse looked the most subservient to her, how it had looked away; seemed shy. But with someone to tell it what to do, "Be boss." Africa shook her hair. "We had horses when I grew up, even though we didn't have saddles. Just be the boss, be firm with him." Africa's horse seemed unsettled, the horse wanted to get going. To some it might look like it wanted to buck: Africa stroked her neck. "easy baby girl." Africa made a stern playful face. "Be firm, but be fair." And then smiled at Carrie and nodded. 'just do it' she wanted to say. "Show no fear like you always do, they're herd animals; they'll follow a strong lead." which was contrary to how she had been dealing with her horse. But that was an explanation for another time. Chamberlain felt instantly connected with the horse's Chi. It wanted to run, be free; let go. And was willing to do that with her. It would be fun. Despite her frivolous frolickingy Africa was ever her martial self. The smells, the sights, the wind across her face. Monte was nearby, the crew was going to do something good; though they would have to do something bad to make that something good happen. Still, she was in the moment; delight on her face. Excitement shared with the horse, one just a little more tempored than the other. |

The walk was quiet for Kenji. Engrossed in his thoughts he kept silent as the others went on about things. To him it was another mission, another job. He cast a sidelong glance at Eli and felt a twinge of deja-vu. Has this all happened before? Somehow this felt eerily similar, a migraine crept up as he focused his eyes on the road. He flinched slightly at the sharp pain radiating through his skull. "I hope this isn't a precursor to what may transpire." He muttered darkly to himself, bringing a hand to massage his temple. The group arrived at the jail with the sun slowly headed towards the horizon. The smell of manure filled the air as they headed towards the stable. Before them was Sheriff Pembrook readying the equines for a ride out to camp. Quick count was 5 horses, and beside them an atv with a caged hook-up. "Someone's hitching a ride." he noted silently as Africa, Monte, and Carrie moved towards the steeds. That just left one horse for either the captain or himself. He smiled graciously at Eli and gestured towards the final ride. "I'll ride cage if need be, get situated somehow" He said to the lawman attending the vehicle. "I'd rather not cause any waves, and it'd give me better vantage at any rate." |

The Bounty Hunters "The horses name is Terry" The sheriff told Africa. Then Pembrook seemed embarrassed when Minato mentioned riding with the cage. "My friend that cart is about to be loaded up and headed out the opposite direction to Rockwell to make room for the baddies we'll be catching." It was about this time that Clarence rode up to the jail on his purebred Arabian stallion. He dismounted and spoke to the sheriff quickly and quietly before leaving without his horse. "Well that settles that. Clarence wanted to contribute to the posse but isn't much for fighting. So he brought me an extra horse." The sheriff disappeared shortly to help Brantly load up his charges and make sure that the cage was secured tight and double locked. Starting up the atv Brantly drove off slowly out of town. With that everyone mounted up and rode out of town. They rode about an hour and a half out of town before making camp next to a large rock to block the wind. The sheriff started a fire and sat back against the rock dosing. Those Left Behind Lupin and Daiyu had taken her belongings back to the Grey Reyne and returned to find out what celebration the old man at the hotel had talked about. The sky was darkening and they saw Eli and the crew a distance out of town already. Walking down to the lights that were shining brightly just past the shanty tents they saw a few stages had been erected. Vendors had set up stalls around the perimeter of the celebration. Banners were hung about saying Reaptide. It was a harvest celebration and it seamed everyone in town was there. Rich, poor, young, and old were just beginning the festivities. They were about to have quite the shindig. One of the two of the stages had bands tuning up instruments the other remained empty. |

(((Africa, Kenji, Monte, Carrie, and the Sheriff right?))) Africa talked in quiet whispers to Terry, the horse. About other horses she had known as a little girl. Her soothing voice then for Monte. She reached across the short distance to hold his hand for a minute. Her gaze up to the sky; her ears perked for the quiet steps of the horse, the creak of the saddles, the occasional sounds from the dry plains; smells of dust and dry scents of some distant flower letting little odors tells the pollinating flyers to come to it; the motion of the horse in sync with her own rolling and floating along on the back of the horse; and her mouth, the remembered tastes of Monte's lips on hers the night before. At the big rock she helped to settle the horses, remembered to put them off to the side, where they'd get the scent of anything coming up wind, but not of them. Then she walked down wind, where any hunters, wolves or human would approach. The night spoke nothing but an empty feeling in her gut. It was coming. Hard dark danger. Pain for someone. Death. They rode for death, brought it for others, or others had it for them. Something of that should not be certain, she had no gift for prescience. Yet there it was. Africa returned to the camp to find Monte. She wanted to be up close to him. Snuggled in for a sleep in the open. If death could come, she wished she didn't have so many ... vows? They seemed purposeless out here in the 'real' worlds. Africa looked at Monte's face. She should have made love to him. The night before. When she had the chance. Chamberlain tilted her head. It was quiet. As the black. She turned to pull tight against Monte, ... she felt as warm as the suns.

Kenji said nothing on the trip to camp. His mind was constantly running the numbers. His eyes scanned the horizon watching for any hostile parties. Just a few rabbits among the brush. He watched as the stable faded from view and they began to ride. An easy uneventful ride, one that left the freelancer anxious. It seemed so quiet, so foreign. He'd tracked many-a-men, most jobs on a small ball of dirt much like this one, but it always left him feeling out of place. His musings faded as the Sheriff brought them to the camp. He slipped off the steed and moved to help the lawman set up camp. "How many men are we up against here?" He asked Pembrook, as they set the flame. With the work settled and the horses tied to a log they began to rest and wait for showtime. |

Pembrook looked up from under his hat at the mercenary. "The weakest link from your tussle in the alley gave up that the larger group was scattered in groups of five scouting for trading caravans. Hoping like hell that we can wittle them down to something more manageable." Out in the distance binaculars watched the party make camp. A flash of fire to light a cigarette at the wrong time caught the musing Africas attention. There was someone out in the darkness. OOC: So sorry about my absence. Real life is kicking my a$$. I promise to return tomorrow and post a longer hopefully better post. Sorry in particular to Lupin. |

Africa moved up close to Monte, her lips brushed his ear. "Don't move just yet Bao Bai..." She lingered, who knew she could tease, well; now she did. "There's someone smoking a cigarette out to the southwest about fifty meters. She leisurely got up, trying to be a clever and relaxed; which meant she just tried to act as she always did. First a check on the fire then she moved to the Captain. "Good night sir. I'll get up and make coffee and breakfast." Then in an overly motherly fashion she pulled at his sleeping bag to get him tucked in. "We have a visitor, southwest fifty meters." Then she walked back across the camp, took the roll of toilet paper off the stick stuck in the ground and headed out to the west with obvious intent. |

Monte felt Africa's soft breath against his ear and his heart skipped until the importance of her message filtered through to his brain. His hand drifted toward the automatic tucked under his bedroll as she stood and wandered off to the Captain. He watched her movements and was surprised when she made it apparent she was heading out into the brush for "Lady Business." Then her plan became clear. He rolled onto his side and casually glanced outward, watching her disappear into the brush. There was little he could do without giving away their plan, but he'd be ready for what was coming next. |

Africa moved liked she was going to tend business; but as soon as she felt she was in the darkness she darted a few steps toward where she had seen the glow of a cigarette in the darkness. She moved closer. The scent of the cigarette she could smell, but no longer see the glow of the burning tip. As she tried to circle behind she realized she was not exactly sure where she was positioned now. Scooting about in the bush was not something she had done a lot. Escpecially playing the hunting panther part. She was not even sure what she would do if she got close enough. Hopefully she had probably foolishly thought she might drive the person toward Monte. After a small circling of where she thought the spy on their camp might be she found no one. Finally, there seemed to be nothing left to do. Just call out, let Monte and the Captain know she hadn't found anything. "Hello? Is someone there?" And where she was. ![]() {{ OOC: how about those active drop in a post.... Kenji sat watching the fire. It all felt familiar. The evening air against his face, the scent of the slowly charring wood, the night sky above him. He cast a glance around the camp watching for movement. "Groups of Five eh?, for all we know they're planning to surround us." The mercenary nodded to himself. "But in any rate I can't promise there won't be killin', Especially if they're every bit as dangerous as you say they are" The freelancer got to his feet and dusted himself off. "I hope they won't keep me waiting." He joked to himself. |

Monte slid the automatic out from under his bedroll and squatted first, tucking it into the back of his belt and then stood, fully exposing himself to the distant potential hazard. He raised his left hand to his brow, scanning the horizon. "What's a matter? Lost yourself again?" Although playing the part, he was also well aware that someone might take a shot at him, but also that those out there would be split between his attention and Africa's. With Kenji standing nearby, he responded without turning his head. "Maybe any minute now." |

Kenji's heart nearly leapt out of his chest as he thought about the brigands springing on the camp. Factions aside, whatever Eli thought of him, no matter the job or the price on Eli's head, it all faded away. The freelancer's hand toyed with the hammer of "Big Iron" as he envisioned the thought of the camp coming under fire from enemy forces. Kenji felt a hint of nostalgia, and with the tilt of his hat disguised as a straightening of the brim he moved to slip around the back side of the boulder to discern the situation from their other side. Africa one way, the freelancer decided the other was a more prudent discussion. That was if she was on alert and not on a nature call. He had now way of knowing what would go down, but he had a feeling they'd all find out soon enough. |

Africa sniffed, squatted and moved through some dense prickly shrubs. She found where the 'watcher' had been. Tucked behind bushes someone had not been able to resist a smoke. Scuffling marks suggested this person and moved away, but gone? She moved out of the nettles, they small irritant poison began to cause discomfort. "Over here." she said, someone was here but they've gone. Which wasn't for sure, they just were at this particular spot any more. Her bare arms beaded tiny bits of blood, she absent mindedly rubbed at them smearing a small amount of blood. Training and a body that controlled element and chemicals didn't seem to be helping the stinging of the tiny scratches. Deeper in the wood, a wolf caught the scent of blood. And people, too many people. But there was hunger. |

A shot rang out, and Monte spun around and dropped. Two men came up onto their knees, rifles out as Africa watched. The distance between her and those gun men was a scant hundred yards. Someone else, just to her right, coughed and sneezed. She had three men located, but which to go for? And where might the others be? The other members of the posse came alive and made way to their weapons and started to return fire against the two silhouetted men. |

Africa Chamberlain dropped to a low crouch. The two shooters were firing at camp, but there was someone closer. She turned her attention to sickly sounding source. Creeping slowly, crouched low she made a small circle to in that direction; she prepared her mind for harsh force. 'deadly force' she admitted to herself. Appropriate response as required, and then she cleared her mind for what was to come next. |

The two men dropped back down as bullets ripped through the air in their direction. From the direction of the sneezer, came a quiet reprimand that only Africa could hear. "Quiet ya sneaker. Ya get us spotted f' sure!" With the camp roused, and flashes from several guns marking their position, it wasn't hard to figure out who to shoot first. Another rifle rang out from a third quarter and one of the posse cried out in response, toppling over while clutching at his forehead. Another rifle barked in another direction and the Sheriff grabbed at his shoulder, dropping his Peacemaker and going for deeper cover. More shots rang out between the posse and the now three rifles firing from protected defilade. Africa closed range on the one nearest to her; one rifleman and one indisposed sneezer. |

From the direction of the sneezer, came a quiet reprimand that only Africa could hear. "Quiet ya sneaker........" For just an instant Africa froze.... she thought the male voice had spoken to her... "..... Ya get us spotted f' sure!" The voice, the sound; she was close enough to smell the gunpowder from several shots a little farther away. Why were these two staying in hiding while others shot and fired? She squatted low to the ground, considered that anyone trying to flank the others shooting at camp would come in direct fire of these two. A step, then another. She was close enough now, just two steps behind them; a small dug in position behind a small log. Cover of bushes just in front of them. Fine pollen from the disturbed flowering buds tickled her nose. The source of sneezy's sneeze perhaps. Africa made a small curve of her fingers on her right hand, for the man about to raise and shoot. A firmer fist for sneezy. She visioned her movement, the right handed strike to the nerves in the shooter's neck and a powerful backhanded blow to sneezy's temple. Chamberlain would strike hard, leaving nothing to chance. A leopard's class and a fist of thunder. She struck. They never turned or heard her. The strikes landed on neck and head. Both men slumped. Africa checked the pulse in their necks, took their weapons and moved slowly back. Like a rat she had snuck, like the viper she had struck; but killing weapons in her hand the reality struck her with a cold shiver. This was a gun fight. Others were shooting at her crew, should she use one of these weapons? The other attackers were close by and not aware of her presence. ---- permission to take out baddies per narrator MacTrom ) ----
