Pembrook shook his head at the offered cigarette. "Thanks but no. Quit a few back. As for the badlands it's mostly scrub brush and ruins on the border of the old city" Listening to Eli and Carrie he realized how awkward he felt."Look I know I'm asking a lot. You have to think it over. If you'd like you can find me at the jail when you've decided." He shifted weight from one side to the other. He hated asking for help but then he was being invited in just as quickly. "Well your right what the hell." He warmed up a bit being invited in. "I could go for some coffee." Once up in the galley he greeted the crew. "Morning everyone." Edited by biffcalhoon, Oct 22 2013, 10:24 AM.

Africa smiled to show an approval. No, an admiration. "And yet, with this instinct and that scar from following it; you again followed it." She looked to the companion. "The verse is not all cruel, not even most of it I think. And when we answer, we answer to more than a harsh mistress, but the planets and the moons. More so we have ourselves to answer to, our friends..." she moved ever so closer to Monte, it looked like she might say, 'and lovers' but instead, "And I believe a higher power that lives in all of us. And all the verse." The the Sheriff, Captain and First Mate arrived. The sheriff spoke, "Morning everyone." Africa rose easy and without apparent deference, except for the slight bow to the authorities. Authorities meaning not just the Sheriff, but the Captain and XO as well. It was important for visitors to be treated properly, guests. And those in position to be needing to speak to them should be waited on. It was old training, back in the day of the nunnery, some bit of deference to elder in the villages of the Wings of God. "Welcome Sheriff." Mostly though she wanted to be of some service to the ship. She gathered coffee, bowls of food and plates and made sure all was in reach for those of import. Then her subtle secret agenda revealed failed. Monte was up and nowhere to be sitting and snuggling. She looked at him, steadfast and protective; studying, thinking, yet smiling in a certain way Africa wanted to ask him about. slight edit to match up with monte Edited by Tojoyama, Oct 23 2013, 08:09 AM.

Monte watched the various conversations going on in the Galley while he positioned himself at the doorway. It felt like everyone was getting along, and he relaxed slightly. Eli entered and passed Monte on his way into the galley.
Monte jumped as the sheriff entered behind him and stepped past. He turned to put the sheriff directly in front and to be able to keep an eye on the new man. Africa seemed to take up the Greeter mode and he smiled gently at her ease with strangers. |

Kenji reflected upon the shepherd's words, All he could manage was a slight nod. Her view was very foreign to him, but he accepted the words with an open mind. He reached for his mug and opened his mouth to answer, but before the words could escape his lips he heard a voice echo through the galley. The mercenary turned his head to the unfamiliar voice. Though the uniform was oddly familiar. The design was that of a small town sheriff. He nodded to the man and raised his cup of joe. "I hope I didn't raise too much hell last night officer. He stated apologetically a sheepish grin on his face, before turning his gaze to Carrie and the Captain. The man's thoughts turned towards their exchange in the corridor near the Cargo bay. The smile faded as he grew quiet His attention turned towards the coffee cup. His mind was not on the mission nor was it on the slip of paper squirreled away in his breast pocket. First and foremost he needed off the planet. Then everything else would fall into place. One way or another. |

Lupin had already finished his meal and was taking his plate and flatware to the sink. He was already pouring himself some extra coffee when the local sheriff walked in. This was a definite mood killer for him and a suprise that he wasn't expecting. Especially ironic considering the way he was pulling the captain's leg about it earlier. He meekly smiled at the lawman and holding up the coffee pitcher asked, "Morning, would you care for a cup?" Honestly this was doing a number on Lupin's nerves, but he kept his composure and played it cool. Thankfully he was such a good liar, for lack of a better term, that it just came natural. He had to just keep reminding himself that he wasn't on the core and that ment he was just a nobody. |

Africa cleared a couple of empty plates, filled a cup of coffee and started a fresh pot. She wanted to go slip in behind Monte, pull his shoulders back a little, relax them, pull his back up a little more, plexus in, hips slightly out, relaxed yet coiled. At all times, the body in ready. Her hands would make subtle slight corrections to put it in peace with itself and the verse around it. Chamberlain looked back into the sink, added a little soap to the hot water. She wanted to put her hands on his body, that's what she wanted. Her attention then finally cleared. The Sheriff, the Captain and the First Mate: there was a serious matter here. Something to consider, to discuss. Had they infringed on some powerful enemy with arrest of the would be rapists. She had heard of such protections some people had; not just in a small unknown town - it could happen in the major city in the core. But this was something else. She looked to Monte to see if he knew. He didn't he was focused on the mote in the crew; the Sheriff. Yet slightly distracted somehow. by her? 'By me!' Yes by God, she wanted to put her hands on him again.

Pembrook looked at the man and shrugged. "No you all did this town a service. I've already made an ill conceived attempt at humor to say that I was sorry they weren't shuffled off their mortal coil." Looking at Lupin when he offered coffee he accepted graciously. Then he spent the next fifteen minutes laying it all out there. He told them about the normally quiet town being overwhelmed in the last few months by random raider attacked. Bad men so bold that they even spend some of their down time in town for their recreation. With the six they had in custody there was at least twenty more out there. He had good intel that they were all spread thin out on various scouting camps looking for scrappers from the city ruins. He told them how he just needed their help to roung up one or two of the of the scouting parties and he could handle the rest with his deputies. "Now I'm not looking to kill them but no one will mourn if any do pass on to the next world. After we subdue any party we can find I'll place trackers to them so Brantly my deputy can find them while we move on to the next. It's all about personel and with the crew you all caught last night locked up I need some extra hands to help reign in the rest. I can't pay as much as you might imagine a job like this may normally payout. I'm a local sheriff only. Not much in Alliance assistance. I'll understand if you can't help I just had to present my case." With that he stood up and put his empty cup down. "If you can spare a few people I 'll be at the jail. We'll ride out whenever you're ready." He made ready to leave them to figure out his towns fate. |

This was serious. Hunting men. Her eyes took in her crew.... that felt good. 'her crew'. Things were going well, and now. It was hunting people. Somehow though, a moment of ... levity ... while they considered this violent task. "We'd get to ride horses?" she said with the deadpan delivery she'd observed of these hardened souls. Her eyes were serious though. This was interesting, this yin and yang element. This making light of violence. She had seen it. And now, out of character from the woman she was ten years ago. Africa took part in it. But she had another reason, to pull them in... She smiled a little, now that she had their attention. "A good cause I think. Helping your people. Without killing of course." Africa focused on the Sheriff then, "So these men would be tried? There would be a jury of their peers. What will be done with them, and who will decide?" It was a challenge too. Africa kept the floor, she knew how to give a sermon, or something sermon-like. Many had taken to hard times, stealing; thieving. "That's a lot of people outside of town trying to live off this small community? It is a harsh hard verse indeed. How then I wonder did they come to this? And what can be done with them once they are captured? If your people cannot house those already imprisoned without undue burden?" She had deliberately painted herself into a corner, for which she did not have an out. There was no such out. It is what it is. It is what she came to see. To learn. To participate in. And she knew she'd help if the crew decided. Or if the Captain decided. But not without everyone at least taking on the same thoughts that would plague her conscious. It was the way of the verse. Lesson learned - even as she spoke and foresaw the outcome. There would be death. Deliberate death. Why didn't it make her sad? Why did she not dread this path? Africa looked to Monte. Could he explain? yes. Satisfactorily? no, probably not. Still, her mood turned inward as her awareness increased. Who was she becoming? ![]() |

Monte watched for Eli's reaction, and saw Africa's mixed expression of apparent concern and interest in the chase. He winked at her as he stepped over to one side, giving him a better coverage of the sheriff and others. "If we go, I'm in. But it's up to my Captain to decide our involvement." Many times in the past, Monte had gone to the aid of strangers, sometimes not as successful as he would hope. But common villains; well, if they were the type to assault a woman, then they were no better than the vermin in the back alley. Certainly only slightly better than the savages out on the rim that parents told their children about. Those evil dredges of society that he had had to deal with once before. Monte's eye closed in memory and a shiver took him. He leaned back for a moment until he had caught himself. Then he opened his eyes to stare at the lawman. "If this is the sort of thing these villains do for fun, then I'd hate to think what they might do if they were serious. " |

Pembrook took in Africa's questions and thought a moment. "I've already waved the Alliance for assistance when I filled my cells last night. They won't come soon enough but they'll come eventually. I'd like to save Bao, the man with the scar, for them. Get him off my rock. For the rest they will have a trial and find their justice. I just have to transport them a few hundred kilometers to Rockwell to the east. Larger town equals larger jail. I can send Dropsy my other deputy to do that if I had someone to watch my little Bao in a box I have down at the station."The sheriff nodded at this. "They use this town hard but the Companion riled them up into a frenzy. It's more drunken beatings and vandalism normally. I'm just glad you're okay young lady." He gave a heartfelt look to Daiyu as if to say how sorry he was this happened on his watch. |

Kenji sat and watched the dialogue unfold before him weighing his options. On the one hand one easy bullet. Quick and clean, on the other hand he still knew nothing further about his job. For all he knew they wanted him alive. This was all quite the dilemma for him. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and theories, the mystery itself drove him mad. His facade was easygoing. A glint in his eye at the new job thrust upon them all. A grin passed through his lips. His hand slipping down to thumb Big Iron mindlessly, The old Earth-That-Was phrase"Two birds, one stone" came to mind. Even if he didn't move on the Captain, creds were creds. "I'm in regardless, I'm no part of this crew and if I can scrounge up enough money to pay for transport off this rock then I'm all for it." He moved to stand beside the sheriff. "Just let me know how far I need to go." He gave a curt nod to the lawman before turning his gaze to the captain. "That goes to say, if he has no problem working alongside me that is..." He let his thought trail off. He figured it was better to keep it simple. The lawman asked for the man's help, and Eli didn't look to be the type to turn down work. Especially with the crew backing the local. Edited by Ahroro_Deltori, Oct 27 2013, 03:52 PM.

The Captain had stood to one side of the room once the discussion begun, mulling over the details he'd already heard so as to confirm what his crew thought on the whole situation. It seemed a fair price to pay - after all, the folk they'd dealt with the night before, at least from his hazy memory, had been pure scum. What hurt could possibly come of riding out and giving the small town another helping hand? His eyes dropped to the weapon on the hip of the stranger standing in his galley - on his ship - and the man instantly realised he himself, straight out of bed, wasn't armed. "Sheriff, I think you might have yourself a deal made here. Me and mine..." He glanced at Kenji, indicating for certain that his words did not include the man, "... are probably the capable folk you could do with by your side." He turned to the stranger, meeting his eyes and then again glancing down at the large weapon by his side. "I got no problem, s'long as things get done right." He knew the crew understood what this meant, him taking on the job and all. The months on board surely would have proven what kind of a man he was, especially when it came to this kind of action. It was everyone for themselves - if they wanted in, then they would ride. If not, they'd babysit the boat. He wasn't about to send folk into a gunfight, especially this blind. His days of giving those kinds of commands were long gone. "So, those of us who are going to... when do we ride, Sheriff?" |

"I'd like to go Captain, though I've no experience with guns and bounties." He eyes implored a little, that she had other motives. To ensure justice? mercy? Monte? Africa Chamberlain looked at Monte then, there was a certainty in her eyes that he'd be going; still, she had an ingrained discipline to be where she was most needed. "But if I can better serve staying with the ship..." It did make more sense to her. Would she just be an extra thumb out in the bush? or the dust? Did they want her out there? Or back at the ship, out of the way so 'proper justice' could be dished out as she had imaginings of such things out away from Core Judiciary. And was that wrong? |

Monte watched as Kenji seemed to nervously flick the hammer on his heavy pistol and his reaction to the Sheriff's offer. Something seemed off. There was a joy, a hunger in the man's eyes that spoke ill of his intent. Monte shook the thought away, but it seemed to linger just off to left field. He touched the butt of his automatic, hanging in the shoulder holster under his right arm pit. The snap was loose but the gun stayed in its leather. Then Africa caught his eye. Her offer to go along, her lack of gun skills tottered against what he had seen her do in action. A smile broke through his quietness and he nodded to her. He wanted to go to her side, but something kept him close to the Captain. Something dark and dangerous. "I think you would do just fine along. " |

Pembrook's weight lifted the moment the mercenary offered help and completely was gone when Captain Eli also agreed to help. He didn't let his feelings show on the outside but he imagined some lines erased from his forehead. "I'll be making preparations for the horses and my deputies as they've not really been tested without my watchful eye. I would think that we could ride out around five this evening and camp out on the trail. If you prefer the day to rest and prepare we can leave around eight in the morning tomorrow. I don't want to leave much later then that. I don't know how long the group will stay spread out like they are now."
The sheriff looked around the room. "I'll be at the jail when you make a decision. All willing to help are welcome and this town will thank you for it." He tipped his hat. "Thank you all." With that he took his leave and made to prepare for the most action his little office would see for a very long time. |

Lupin sipped on his coffee for the sheriff’s spiel, he wasn’t really listening to a word the man said and the whole time was thinking to himself about several things. Among those things was the ethical nature of hunting for those who shared similar unethical backgrounds, then there was the irony of working for the police, and of course how badly he wanted a cig to calm his nerves. Thankfully the sheriff didn’t take long after the captain gave the law man his assurance that they’d be providing help. As soon as he was sure that Pembrook was gone he finally spoke his peace, "I’m not going." He blurted out as he pulled out a much needed cigarette before elaborating, "it’s just too weird working for the law and I don’t even know the first thing about horses." He lit his tobacco and savored the taste and the endorphins that calmed his nerves. |

Monte invited her, encouraged her. And wasn't this trip about, 'experiences'. "OK, yes, I'll go." she said simple, looking at Monte then turned to the Captain. "With Captain's permission." but she smiled like a long lost daughter that could not be refused. And then, "I think tonight would be best. You can learn a lot out away from the buildings and electronics at night." Africa had not meant to sound so mysterious; but her upbringing was simple. People at night made sounds that travelled far, any light was easy to see. Even scent and senses were higher; mankind had flew through the stars; not many of them could reach back to those primitive skills that their ancesters had 5,000 years ago. Her training tapped into that. Living in tents, primitive log homes. Some people even took vehicles and called it... "Camping." She smiled. It would be fun. Except for the violence she sensed, no. There was a dark excitement about that too. ![]() |

Kenji nodded at the captain's words and turned his attention back to the lawman. He saw the officers face smooth slightly as the stress ebbed away. He continued to go on about two plans of action. Head out in the evening or wait until dawn. Either way it would still be a full day before the action starts. He let out a soft sigh and looked around the galley. He watched the Reyne's crew as they tried to figure out their next move. "The Shepherd and the muscle are on board with the Captain." He thought to himself. His face still showing a slight anticipation for the job. He'd hope that they'd agree on slipping out that evening, but those thoughts had no tell in his eyes. His silent hope was to get to know his "Comrades-at-Arms". Crossing his arms, before leaning against the threshold Kenji nodded. Pembrook left with a nod and the mercenary's attention turned towards the captain. "It'd be easier to set up tonight then head in at dawn. Like the sheriff said, there is no idea how long that group will stay spread out."[b/] He flipped a palm upwards as he continued. "We can either pick them off one by one or... we'd have a platoon of undesirables bear right down on us. Your boat, your crew, your call." |

Elijah gave Carrie a long look as everyone else weighed in on the situation, only turning away when Arsene voiced his disinterest in the setup. That made sense, not just for a man like Lupin, but in general. Eli himself had reservations, but his responsibilities to his crew and his word to the Sheriff had to come first. After listening to everyone else sign off, the Captain barely acknowledged the comments on tactics from the strangers, wondering just how the situation would unfold with him along. "Well I guess it's settled. We'll head out when folk are ready... those who have reservations, they can babysit the Reyne." He moved across the room, to the kitchen section, and poured a cold glass of water. The coffee had done its trick, though his throat and lips were left dry from the morning's drama. It was time to get his head in the game, to focus on the new job at hand, and to put unrested matters aside. "Let's pack it up, then. Those to leave, meet down in the bay in twenty. Those to stay... don't get bored." He smiled, winked at Lupin, and turned to head upstairs to where his handgun waited. "We won't be long." (OOC: Timejump? Timejump.) |

The Jail Around five thirty Pembrook had five horses saddled up and ready to go. Three were brown with white spots and two were black with a brown tint in their coats. A man was going to and fro preparing a large atv with a steel caged trailer. He waved at the group as they approached and realized he might not have enough horses for everyone after all. Beyond the jail the farmhands began to repopulate the shantytown as work was complete. A faint fiddle could be heard tuning up for the beginning of a revelry most of the crew would be missing out on. The Hotel Both Lupin and Daiyu had decided against going out into the badlands. Eli had offered her passage off world once their job was done. She still had a room at the hotel and she had asked Lupin to go with her to collect her things still being shook up from the previous nights attack. The hotel seemed large for such a small town and it was empty except for an old man behind the counter. He looked up at the two as they entered eyes widening at Daiyu. "Miss we here are so sorry to hear 'bout what happened to you here. I trust that you ain't been hurt." His toothless mouth made it hard enough to understand him on top of whatever accent he sported. |
