The arrival was rocky at best, though the brief turbulance was in the back of everyone's minds. On board the Glory everyone had their demons to deal with - memories long buried coming to light, old faces coming back as new ones, and burning spires of anxiety on the horizon. It had been a good plan, given the circumstances. If it was anyone in the 'Verse who needed a hard earned rest, it was those on board this ship. It was Gulliver who'd made the suggestion of Greenleaf, a place she'd mentioned a few times during her time on board. It was a place she called home, a safe haven that would welcome the crew with open arms, and a tiny speck on the radar to anyone who might mean them harm. That home was Cachetteen, the hidden village of the Brown Hill People. And that morning, as the Glory broke through the atmosphere of Greenleaf to reveal the rolling forests and mountains and valleys below them, Cachetteen was burning.

Queen of the Lost Chapters
|
The ride had been anything but easy and more than once, Trina had been jostled enough to irritate the pain in her shoulder. She had just opened her eyes to check on everyone when Mike struck the side of the shuttle. It startled her, having never really seen him angry before. She felt herself start to shrink away from the emotions and then he turned to check on she and Cole. She was obviously a little shaken from the ride, her medical bag clutched in her hands, but she put on a brave, thin smile. "I'm fine." It wasn't fully true, but she had every intention of pushing through her pain. There were others outside that likely were in worse shape than she was. They were her priority. |

Becker nodded, a great deal relieved and somewhat surprised that everyone was currently fine. He wiped a hand his mouth then grabbed his rifle. "Okay. I'd say we're still in the middle of these wood, I gotta figure that we got incoming." "I'm gonna find cover at the edge of this hole and keep watch." Eyes looked toward Cole. "Help on that'll go along way." A glance back to Karyn, a tap of his ear to accompany. "I'll be on comms, let me know if Ian's coming our way or if we're moving." Finally his view fell on Trina. "You just stay alive for me. I'll try not to leave any work for you." On taking of a deep breath Mike stepped of the shuttle and began a jog toward the caves edge. He eyed up any cover and hoped he was ready for 'them', before 'they' were ready for him. |

Sonya hesitated before following her village friends. There was a prisoner. Normally torture and threats, even those deserving as this one did would turn her away. Dark as that which hurts you, makes you that dark. She did not care. Tobias was insane. Biff was mad as hell. Unless the man was stupid, he'd realize this quickly. Eyes of the angry mother moved between Biff and Tobias, impatience, 'get on with it' they seemed to say.

Requiem for a Hawke
|
"Don't matter none." Growled Hawke to Biff. "Not your concern - never was, was it?..." He chided, staring down at one of the guards. As he strode forward, he laid the boot into the other guard's guts - not too hard, but enough to surge him from his knees to land face flat on the floor. His gun creaked as he crushed its grip, knuckles the barest white under his leather glove. "Yer concern's the mewlin' half-pint now. Take the child an' leave. This ain't no place fer his eyes no more." He growled again, never taking his eyes off the two men. "Skippy, take some guns an' stick with 'em. It's gone to hell out there. Get back to yer ship and get the hell off this rock." "If y'leave now - these rats won't follow." Crouching in front of one of the begging men, the one he hadn't laid into, Hawke shook his head slowly, no expression on his face, but a blinding rage sitting behind his eyes. "After all, they came for me, didn't they?" Reaching out, Hawke placed his pistol's still-hot barrel against the man's knee, and cocked the hammer. He waited. "I don't like it when people who've got a bone ta pick with me don't come see me direct... Makes me feel real unappreciated-like. Makes me feel like they're worth yer time more'n me... So what's the real skinny, eh?" Hawke turned an ear mockingly to the guard, pretending to focus on listening. |

Karyn snorted at Mike as he left the shuttle. Gorram that! I'm not getting caught buckled up in a tin can while the rest get to go hunting. She snatched her assault rifle from the rack where she had stashed it, as well as the ammo bag nearby. She threw the strap over her shoulder and unsnapped the pistol at her hip. She went back to the shuttle's hatch and eyed the lone man beside her as she tucked into a kneeling position with her rifle at the opening. With her free hand, she tapped the earbud. "Glory Actual. Blaze is down near the caves. All secure, but we're expecting company. What's your sit rep? Do we have the package yet?" |

The Village "Fall Back!! They're flanking us. Move back to the buildings to your right." Abe saw that too. This was SO not good. They needed to get out of this situation before both of them were sporting holes in their bodies. And that would be in addition to the ones she already had. Plus there was the fact that the time she had left before she crashed was getting closer. If they didn't get out of this mess before then, she was a goner. After all, she didn't expect Ian to haul her sorry butt around after. He had a son to find. Son v. Old girlfriend (at least of some sort) equals son as victor. That's the way it should be. She knew that Ian most likely had a comm. She wished she knew what was going on. How were his people? Did they find the boy yet? She hoped to God that nothing happened to the kid. Ian would be devastated. "We'll lose them in the rubble and move toward the caves." She nodded as she followed him along, covering them as best she could. It was then that Wyatt stopped shooting. He was out of lead. After all, she was pretty well ammo'd up, but she didn't exactly expect to end up in a war. She slung him across her back and pulled out Dude and her next trusty weapon, Sam. With one in each hand, she went back to taking out anyone she deemed necessary. "Wyatt's out of ammo!" she yelled at him. "I got stuff for Dude and Sam, but it ain't gonna last forever!" She hated the way the blood and guts she was laying in for cover earlier stuck to her clothing and therefore to her skin. It was about enough to make her want to retch. "When that Stem Shot wears out, can you give me another one?" she asked, trying to put a plan together just in case. "Or am I a dead duck at that point if we haven't gotten the Hell out of here?" |

As Ian was about to answer Abe he heard heard Tobias in his ear. He was not sure what was going on, but it sounded positive. He was about to ask him when Karyn's voice came directly over the comm channel
"Understood Blaze. We are in transit and we have a lot of company. ..." They had made it to the first of the rubble by this time and Ian's favorite Black Duster had it's tails in tatters from the bullet holes that missed him but not his coat. "... Stand By for Sit Rep. Toby, what is the situation? Do we have Ian?" While he waite for Tobias to answer he finally looked at Abe. "I have one more Stem Dose with me. It would keep you on yer feet fer thirty more minutes but put you out for the better part of the day." He fired his pistols as they continued to move. |

Karyn acknowledged Ian's response and turned to look over at Cole and Trina before tapping the earbud again. "Mike, Ian's on the way with troops in pursuit. I'm moving Blaze to act as support. Take the cave entrance and we'll be ready for them." She made her way back to the bridge and fired up the engines again. Letting the shuttle hover slightly off the ground, she slid it forward and turned the nose toward the village, and then reversed the thrusters, backing the small craft back toward the cave wall. With the shuttle nestled up against the cliff like a fox backed up against its lair, and its heavy guns pointing in the general direction of incoming hostiles, Karyn settled in to act as gunner. |

Sonya ignored Tobias's orders, much as she did most anyone that wasn't called Captain or First Mate. Young Ian was wrapped tight around her mostly on her right hip, her arm holding him tight against her. She did not leave, did not run. At least not yet. An answer first she moved a couple feet to get a good look at the prisoner's face, then turned to cock an ear to the caverns. Sounds of her people moving, anything else? Squinting hard she looked into the dark far corners, maybe a ship. Options. |

"Wait! What?" The sound of Blaze's engine kicking into gear was more than enough to perplex Mike. He misinterpreted her action as a rush back into the dangers that had grounded them. All Becker could do was turn and watch the shuttle that carried his company. A wide eyed expression looked on, waiting for a reveal of Karyn's intentions. His brow furrowed as Blaze hovered to it's position and held it, and a few moments later his expression relaxed. Everything came together in his mind. "Oh, well... That works." Mike turned back and cast an eye down the sights of his rifle. If he could scout out any incoming, they'd have the advantage. Muttering under his breath, "Come on Ian, let's wrap this one up and get lost in the black." |

The Village As they moved, searching for cover, Abe noticed that Ian was temporarily distracted by something on his comm. Not the kind of distracted where he opened himself up to further chances of getting holes plugged into himself, but enough that she could tell something was up. "Understood Blaze. We are in transit and we have a lot of company. ..." "... Stand By for Sit Rep. Toby, what is the situation? Do we have Ian?" "Please tell me that that was some backup? Things ain't looking good here." Then he answered her question about the additional Stem Dose. "I have one more Stem Dose with me. It would keep you on yer feet fer thirty more minutes but put you out for the better part of the day." "Anything that keeps me on the side of the walkin' and talkin' is OK with me." She fired some more well placed bullets, taking out a couple of the aggressors. "How far are these caves you mentioned?" she asked. "As I said afore, things don't look good for us here." |

Cole took to the woods and began to build an improvised blind high enough to hide a prone person with good sectors of fire. He built three quickly at different retreating courses back into the woods from their hide out in the treeline. "Where did I learn how to do this." He whispered to himself forgetting that the others could hear him. If too much trouble came their way they had a little cover and concealment to fall back too. He then took up his own position and listened to the others talk. __________________________________________________________________________ Biff gave a grunt as his only response to Tobias. The guard Tobias wasn't talking to Biff snatched up and drug off to the shadows of the cave away from Sonya and little Ian. Throwing him down to the ground he took his knife and cut a small gash into the mans left arm. "Now I don't want a lot of yelling in front of the kid so I'll make this easy. That first cut is my opening offer. The next will end you. Tell me what you know about your employer and give me a reason you all thought that killing these people was a good idea." Biff's lips touched the mans ear as he whispered his terms. This kind of job was the most intimate. Emotions ran hot when enemy meets enemy. "Start talking." |

Makes me feel like they're worth yer time more'n me... So what's the real skinny, eh?" asked Tobias Hawke. "diddn'.. didn't know for sure you'd be here..... er, sir. Just meant to draw Glory, we figured she was still flyin' so the woman." He looked to Sonya. "They want more tests. Her... n' the boy. Got some kind of natural genetic purity or something. buh buh buh,, there's a bounty on you too. Bosses figure Dugan, spotted on Verbena, survived to Glory." ....... Biff "Now I don't want a lot of yelling in front of the kid so I'll make this easy. "Start talking." "Military I think. Blue Sun is pushed aside. Some other groups too. Phoenix maybe. Independent Undeground. I don't know who's actually getting the goods. The boy. The woman. They just want Hawke dead, too difficult to contain. Worried he'll..... remember things." ...... Sonya tried to move from one interrogation to the other, but she' couldn't quite hear the details. just the one important part. Her and Tobias. And her baby. They wanted Ian too. Gulliver picked up a comm that had belonged to one of the prisoners and moved away. Becker, Trina and Cole moved closer the main edges of the caves. They could see Blaze hovering in what looked to be a futile stand against more approaching ships. Sonya moved closer to the edges of the huge opening of the caves. She looked to have a bundle hugged close to her body. They were some distance away, but there was a path leading up to her. ================================== ================== ================================== The battles that raged slowed. The attacking forces began to pull back. They began to realign on the caves. Some soldiers pressed and pushed slow and easy to contain Ian and Abe at the upper cave entrances. Below and around at the main entrances for the ships BlaZe waited as enemies closed in. Abe and Ian reached the upper entrances. BlaZe was against the main ship entrance. Then a lone figure stepped forward near BlaZe. Little Ian was bundled up snug in a blanket. Sonya spoke into the comm. "We'll come. But let the others go." .... After sealing up the smaller passages near the village entrances, Abe and Ian arrived at the local of Biff and Tobias. On BlaZe the situation looked dire. There were other ships moving in. It looked like a whole rutting wing of military firepower. Little Ian came racing from a corner. "Daddy!" One of the prisoners spoke, with a smile. "She took my bag of plastiq." ![]() edit to get Cole, Trina and Becker in position.

Once they had made the trees Ian turned back to Abe. "Caves are right up there." He poined with his chin and shot another soldier that was approching them. The man pitched back with a geyser of blood spraying from his neck. It was a through and through, side to side. The man would bleed out in less than thirty seconds. They made the cave and Ian first saw the Blaze, then saw the lights of approching ships. He looked at all of those that had come with him and knew that Death would wait no more Daddy Ian turned and saw his son. He smiled and picked him up, Ghost and Ryder having been placed at his hips. He kissed his son and looked for Sonya. He saw her above his position with a bundled wrapped figured at her hip. He looked at his son again. "She took my bag of plastiq." His eyes widened. "No." he whispered in dispair |

Karyn punched at the alarms that cried out for attention as the long range scans filled with hostile blips. More Trouble! She noticed a knot of soldiers moving behind two figures as they broke cover and ran for the cave entrance a short distance away. She toggled the guns, sending twin streaks of tracers into the black uniforms, sending several tumbling backwards and others diving off to each side, seeking cover from the Blaze's heavy guns. She peddled the Blaze's altitude jets, swinging her nose right and left a degree, ripping the jungle into shreds. Over the comm she announced the obvious. "We're going from hot to boiling, folks. If you want an exit, I'd suggest you board this boat now. I'm not sticking around to be another missile magnet. Get here NOW!!" She glanced back over her shoulder to see Trina at the hatch, nodding and standing by to assist. |

Cave entrance, by BlaZe The sight of those oncoming ships made Mike's whole body feel heavy. His very natural being was telling him to drop to the floor and give it up. Then his captain came in to view. "IAN!" He found the strength to keep his gun up. "Get your pi gu over here!" Mike looked at company, and took in a few unfamiliars. It wasn't easy separating friend from foe. "Cover them!" He barked at Cole. "The... good ones." He tried to clarify, knowing Cole was out of the loop. "The..." He conceded with a sigh. "Just light up the sky a bit." Hopefully intimidation would be enough to give them breathing room. |

Sonya Gulliver was well away, across from Blaze and the others. She'd dropped a bag and was definitatly holding ... a little body. A small arm dangled from the blanket. Her gun belt dropped to the cave floor. She stopped at the edge of the cliff, 200 meters below was the rocky bottom. Gulliver raised her free hand, shuffled to the edge of the cliff. She spoke but could not be heard. Of the few soldiers in the caves - they withdrew, a few kept shooting but were pulled back. Those that didn't get shot up. A fighter hovered in front of Gulliver, another moved to mirror Blaze's exit. Two others above in the valley locked in. At the back of the caves most of the surviving villagers had fled through tunnels to the village, or other tunnels which according to Sonya led away to the jungle in the west. A comm on one of the prisoner's clicked to an open channel. "Send Hawke with the Gulliver woman and we will withdraw." The prisoners looked eager for that deal. "If you don't, they'll light the place up. It was Capture if possible. Please!. We're military, not Blue Sun. We... they just want to find out... " with fear in his eyes he looked at Tobias Hawke. "I think they even want to .... hire you." |

Requiem for a Hawke
|
Hawke sighed as the woman didn't listen, albeit briefly. She finally fled the cave with something - he didn't rightly care what. Something else, however, caught his attention. "Hire me, ey?..." The stubbled jaw split into a toothy grin. The sickening sound of the hammer clicking on his gun rang out in the cave. "Well now..." He strode around the two men until he was behind them. He leaned down, and pressed his gun against one man's temple, on his far right. On his left, he smacked his riot shield's side into the other man's head, pushing their heads together. Before they connected, Hawke stuck his head in between theirs. "Don't worry boys... She's powerful enough to punch through light hull plating. Three skulls is piss easy for her." He grinned as he pressed the two men's temples against his with a gun barrel and a metal plate, all the while with a manic look in his eye. His ear pressed against one of the men's comm piece, and he spoke loudly, assuming the comm was constantly transmitting. "Next time, if you wanna hire me, call me maybe, you filthy hull rats. Don't burn out a gorramn innocent village to send me a smoke signal. Come pick up the bodies when you're done." A gunshot rang out from the caves, though it may have been hard to hear among the cacophony of ships and gunfire outside. Hawke came strolling out of the cave, alone. He held an assault rifle in one hand, two clips sticking out of one pocket, and his massive riot shield in the other. In the light, he saw Dugan. His comm had been fiddled with, and he had linked it to the very same open channel the two corpses back in the cave were on. "So." He said aloud, to those present at the mouth of the cave, but specifically into his comm. "Now see, crazy curls over there... She don't speak for my own self here." He said, taking a somewhat strange, overconfident swagger to his step. "You wanna hire me, that's the gist of what I got here. You put them pretty toys away before I force you t'use 'em - and I know damn well you don't wanna... And let's talk price. Now, gentleman..." He straightened up, staring up at the hovering ships with a small grin, hat pulled low. His arms raised wide and his grin split into a broad smile. "I'm listenin'." He smiled, broadly, as if he were in the spotlight of a grand play. He had truly lost it. |

Sonya looked over at Tobias. It was hard for her to tell if he was any crazier that she already thought he was. "You killed them?" After a look over her shoulder, saw the crew getting on Blaze; her people gone, she continued, "Good." Everyone looked to be trying to get on board. She glanced at the plastique explosives she'd left nearby and then let loose of the dead boy she'd pick up. Tossed him of the cliff, "twenty second to go she said," to Karyn was her intent. She knew Karyn had seen her drop the explosives. Then she bent her knees and took a long jump forward to dive off the cliff. ==== "Holy..." said an officer on the medium fighter when the body she presumed to be little Ian went over the cliff. "Fire!" she called out as Sonya dove. ==== From the fighter a white thin spray shot from it's non-lethal cannon. A second fired at Tobias. The gooey white substance hit them both center mass and spread across arms and legs. Tobias was captured in the substance, his strength useless. Sonya dangled from a long milky white thread as the medium fighter retreated back and up; both Gulliver and Hawke dangled below upside down, dangling until the two heaps of goo managed to collide and they stuck together - face to face. ==== "And that is how you do that." said the female officer on board the medium fighter. "Khain to Commander. We have them both." A voice issued orders, "All units pull back to vector niner." ==== A counter on a packet of explosives, left behind by Sonya ticked down, 14, 13.... |

Mike was more than surprised to find Tobias at the cave entrance from and center without a care for cover. His mouth held agape a little at the sight, and all he could do was continue to be a astonished by the words and actions of hawk. Becker was admittedly out of the loop on on certain happenings, but he still couldn't find much sense to what he witnessing. He slowly moved to activate the comm in his ear before speaking. "Want me to knock him out and drag him back to Glory?" Less a genuine request, more a commentary on what he was viewing. (OOC: and if that narration moved us along like I think it did...) As the rest of the crew closed in, Becker began pulling back. "Let's take it back Cole," he said, slipping into a comfortable exchange with the man as if he had never departed. Mike was intent on being the last in, making sure everyone was aboard before he pulled up his gun and slipped into BlaZe. The only man he could see hanging him up was Hawke. Mike would play that by ear and with captain's orders. "This is the part where we bolt, let's go." Edited by Becker, Nov 21 2013, 12:11 AM.
