The arrival was rocky at best, though the brief turbulance was in the back of everyone's minds. On board the Glory everyone had their demons to deal with - memories long buried coming to light, old faces coming back as new ones, and burning spires of anxiety on the horizon. It had been a good plan, given the circumstances. If it was anyone in the 'Verse who needed a hard earned rest, it was those on board this ship. It was Gulliver who'd made the suggestion of Greenleaf, a place she'd mentioned a few times during her time on board. It was a place she called home, a safe haven that would welcome the crew with open arms, and a tiny speck on the radar to anyone who might mean them harm. That home was Cachetteen, the hidden village of the Brown Hill People. And that morning, as the Glory broke through the atmosphere of Greenleaf to reveal the rolling forests and mountains and valleys below them, Cachetteen was burning.

Karyn maneuvered the shuttle past the nose of the grounded Glory and then rolled into a 180 to begin a strafing run against the remaining troops working on breaching the cargo door. Flying a difficult zig zag to keep opposing fire from being anywhere near accurate, she closed and ran criss cross tracks of dirt bitting rounds along the road where the troops had tried to seek cover. |

Against his best wishes there was something that instilled him with trust about Cole. Something that made him look back over his shoulder less. Made him keep most of his worry on the enemy. He was at the front of the shuttle, taking in the eyeful that Karyn was dealing with. "We put down anything shooting at ours," Mike instructed. With Blaze's guns, Karyn could surely put a dent in the competition. Becker was one step behind though, which he realised as caught sight of those trying to breach Glory. She was locked up but not locked down with the command program Dugan had created. A few taps into his PDA fixed that, and Glory wouldn't be inpenetrable, but she wouldn't be easy. "Do what we can, but crews our focus. We can't 'em in hot water for too long." The threat to crew was what had them in the shuttle, but Becker still saw an issue. He thought aloud. "In fact if these keep at it, you'll be best dropping us off and returning. Maybe take any wounded with Trina. Let's watch the space." |

Biff swallowed hard and met her gaze. He didn't fancy himself much of a teacher but he would adapt. "First we'll make our way using the cover and concealment we have at hand. The first two will be the easiest then they spread out more. Once you reach the target try to grab their mouth grabbing tight thrust the knife in at an upward angle from the base of the skull." He demonstrated a quick thrust in the air with his knife. "If done correctly we might be able to take four, two each, if we're lucky. Then it's all hell. Close work like this takes a toll on the soul so think about Ian's safety and you'll find your resolve. We can do this." He bounced a bit in his crouched position to make sure his knees were limber and wouldn't crack during his path to his target. "Lets go." He dropped down behind some barrels and crates and silently moved towards his first target slowly, silently. In his peripheral he kept an eye on her progress. She looked amazingly agile and deadly beautiful as if she had been meant to be a creature of the shadows. This gave him hope that they would be able to pull this off. He focused his attention as he approched his first taget intinct took over and the war machine he was and always will be turned on. _______________________________________________________________________ Cole sat in the shuttle watching the scene unfold. Men cut through and through with bullets. A smile began on his face and when he felt it he willed it to disappear. He felt the gun in his hand and put it into the jumpsuits front pocket carefully. Not clear on who the enemy was made things mush in his head but these people seemed to care about him and he would back them up. It was the best he could do right now given whatever he had just been through. |

Karyn flew Blaze once more past the scattered troops near the Glory before turning south and buzzing off, banking hard port and swinging to the east, bearing onto the previous LZ. "Ok. Once pass over the village, coming from their backsides. We'll strafe any heavy vehicles and scatter the individual troops. We can zig zag back and forth to keep both forces off balance. Give Ian and the others a chance." Just like old times, she thought to herself. Fighting those poor rebels trying to overthrow the government in their misbegotten war. What a waste that was. The nose of the shuttle came up and pointed at the tail fins on the larger transport, targeting the rear thrusters. She toggled the red pip on her yoke and hot lead spewed out, stitching burning crosses against the big craft's engine nacelles. Smoke had just started to boil out when she flipped the smaller craft onto its back and drove it hard into a flip and reversed direction back toward the village. As the Blaze came back over the tree lines approaching the burned out town, she spotted two quad-cycles. Again, the shuttles guns stuttered and two tracks of dirt spit up in lines reaching out to surround the small vehicles, turning them into hash. The armored troops on the ground were scattered as well, seeking shelter where they could find it. A feral grin replaced the stoic face on Karyn's continence as the blood lust took her over. |

Sonya practiced the manuever just as Biff showed her, hand over mouth as the knife closed in; cut hard deep fast. Twice more, put it in her muscle memory. She nodded as he quietly, silently directed how she should approach. She nodded and moved off. A last second check to make sure nothing on her made any sound. Then she looked in at Ian. Then looked away, into the darkest part of the cave. Sonya Gulliver took a breath of the darkness and moved in controlled grace behind the first guard. In her mind she saw exactly how she would grip the man from behind, cut, and drag the body in the shadow. Then she let the dark move her. To quietly kill. |

Abe understood when Ian told her to do. She wasn't happy about letting him go after the 6 guys coming closer to them by the second, but she understood. She was an excellent shot and she probably had a better chance to get the job done. As soon as the quad bikes passed, Abe rolled over onto her stomach, propped Wyatt up and sent of a controlled burst of bullets, taking out the folks that inhabited them. Hopefully the bikes wouldn't be damaged by the fact that they were moving and no was driving anymore. She heard Ian's auto-fire ring out and took a look back. He seemed to be doing alright enough. It was a success for all intents and purposes, as long as the six were taken care of. She started to roll to face the direction Ian was facing when she heard a ship above her. She was about to swear, but recognized it as the Blaze. Backup? Then things went all to Hell when the Blaze opened fired on the bikes as they were slowing down, basically obliterating what would have been their Trojan horse. "Wo bu xiangxin wo de yanjing!" she swore as she turned to Ian. "What the Hell?" So much for that idea... And she laid in a pile of dead, bloody corpses for nothing. The only thing that was left was to focus back on Ian and his task, ready to cut down anyone who he hadn't already obliterated. Glossary Wo bu xiangxin wo de yanjing = I don't believe my eyes! Requiem for a Hawke
|
The battle wasn't over yet. With a heavy sigh, Hawke drew his hand-cannon again, flicking it open with a snap. In a fluid, over-practiced motion, the gun was tossed aloft as it broke open, and a single empty shell ejected. With a lightning flurry, he snatched the shell from the air, catching the gun by the barrel, chamber facing up. It wasn't the most fancy of tricks, but it got the job done with one arm. He spent a few seconds rotating the gun between his hand and his mouth as he dug out another bullet, and reloaded his weapon. The satisfying 'snap' of the revolver closing was little solace in the cold, damp cave. "Get up." He growled, wiggling the business end of his gun at the floor near the girl. "I ain't got time fer games. Yer free to go - exit's that way." He nodded backward toward the natural light, taking another quick puff of his cigar. "Still a bit o' cold work to be done in here, y'don't wanna be around for it." He started forward, not toward the sobbing girl, but toward the older man he'd taken down. As he approached, he placed the bulk of his massive riot shield onto the figure's chest, and knelt a knee with some weight into the old merc's throat. Hawke waited for him to stop moving. Whether he was dead or not, only Hawke knew. "Like I said, I ain't got time fer games. You wanna play mind-bendy crazy-memory pattycake with me, you do it outside, in the daylight, after this is over, with a gun to my head." He growled back over his shoulder as he dealt with the old mercenary. "I ain't havin' another mistake like what's in my medbay right now." |

The Caves The girl jumped to her feet, sobbing uncontrollably, and started for the exit that Toby had directed her to. A flash of light across her face revealed nothing - a stranger, a face he'd never seen before. He'd been so sure... As Hawke gave his threats the dying man winced in pain from the shield, finally, wordlessly spitting a glob of blood up into his assailants face, a grim smile spreading across his face. "If we don't take you in, we'll take you dead, you piece of shit." As he spoke the men beyond the corner, just the two of them, were slowly moving in on the scene. Catching sight of Hawke and their downed comrade, a shout and volley of gunfire broke up the silence of the cave. Most of the bullets went astray, or landed themselves against the Hawke's shield. The shots were quick, panicked, pouring from the guards' submachine guns. Their next would be far more accurate. The gunfire started to draw attention from the main chamber, a few of the guards breaking from their positions and heading for the tunnel that branched out. Nobody noticed the two figures dropping down to the ground, silent blades taking out the first pair of targets unnoticed. The Sky Blaze did another run of the town, raining down chaos and giving the Captain and his old friend some kind of cover. Whether it'd be enough, though, was anyone's guess. The uncertainty of just how the situation was unfolding was soon answered with a screeching alarm - somewhere below, in the trees, some kind of launcher had locked onto the target. Missile inbound. The Village The recoil dug into Ian's shoulder, but his finger held the trigger down till the bitter end. The bikers he'd targeted were caught in the fray, thrown off in bloody heaps as the quad bike sped off and crashed into the remnants of the house. The second bike was blown to smithereens from high above, riders included, and the drone of engines in the small villages was gone, making way for the crunch of boots and the shout of men coming from the trees. The half dozen who'd broken cover a few moments before had now taken up firing positions on the edge of town, aware that their were still hostiles somewhere in there. Opening fire, the dirt around Ian ignited in a spray of gunfire, though none of the mercenary's managed to hit their mark. Another two broke from the trees as the gunfire started - a never ending marching line of death, it seemed. From where she was still huddled, it seemed none of them had noticed Abe. |

Ian moved to the left and to the right but always toward those coming out to hurt his family. He still fired burst's with the assult rifle. Once it ran out of ammo, he tossed it aside and pulled his pistols and moved faster. Still moving this way and that, he fired when he had a shot. The tails of his Duster tucked up more them once as a round passed him. He still moved and fired. When he ran out of ammo, he ducked behind a stump in the area and reloaded fresh clips and was on the move again. Death followed in his wake. She had a happy look on her face and a gleem in her eyes. Requiem for a Hawke
|
Death paused, ceasing to tread in Dugan's wake, a hitch in her step. She looked off to one side, as something pulled at her imageless form, a distant, concerned look in her eye. A momentary glance to Ian, and then she... Vanished. Greater forces moved as Hawke pulled the hammer back on his gun, and he felt cold arms come to rest around his shoulders. The familiar caress of an icy lover so long deprived of her favourite toy - some could only do so much to tide her over... Her intangible cheek against his, a lithe, pale hand slithering around his, gripping his hand-cannon tight. Hawke watched, colour draining from his cheeks, as the woman ran through the beams of light - a stranger to his eyes. He wiped the blood from his cheek, and gave the old merc's neck an extra 'whump' of his bodyweight for good measure - a gurgling crush followed. He wasn't waking up again. Bullets prattled off his shield, and his face scrunched up; not in pain or fear, but in irritation. "Siddown, y'insolent pups!" There was a new gravel in his voice - an old anger unbridled, and with it, someone... Something that might have best been left to the annals of infamy. That something had taken the helm. He raised his cannon and rested it neatly in a tiny groove on the right side of his shield. With an icy glare, he fired twice, straight for their scampering skulls. They were in disarray, and he was frozen to the bone - there was no chance. No quarter was given, he'd interrogate whoever was left alive if he so deemed to leave one kicking long enough to speak. Rising as one cohesive block, shield, gun and all, Hawke advanced. It wasn't the same Hawke who'd entered the cave, nor the Hawke who'd touched down planetside. It was the worst Hawke they could have hoped for. "I'll give ye worse things t'worry about than what she's offerin', y'vile hullrats!" He spat, voice echoing far back into the cave. "You'll wish she'd take yeh from my sight when yer strapped t'the hull of my ship and we break atmo across yer SUNDERED CORPSES!" It was Havoc. And his comms were still on. He began advancing, shield raised, trigger cocked, and with him, a wave of heat filled the cave, a gust of wind from outside... But to those inside, it would have felt like fire, fire carried by the Devil himself. Gods help them. Gods help them all. |

Sonya felt nothing as the warm blood ran down her arm after she'd cut the man's throat. It wasn't like Ziggurat, where she hesitated with each shot; thinking of the family each man or woman she might have killed wouldn't be seeing again. After laying the body down easy and quiet there were shots echoing through the chambers. The caves were large here, even the connections. Sound could be tricky. But the guards seemed to know where some shots were coming from. While they were looking, twinching their heads to be sure; Gulliver moved closer. There were two guards close to her, the second looking away and then back to his post. Both left his back to her and the first guard. The first guard was exposed. Once again she visioned her action, in a fraction she saw her steps, the motions, the kill. Like seeing the steps between hurdles or down a rocky hillside. Again she moved, quiet: Grasp, cut, kill, .... but she saw there would be no time for moving the body. She'd have to hurry to get the second guard. Then as she moved the mad voice of some blasted over her comm. What should have been unsettling just put her in the mood. Cool and efficient, quiet and bloody, fast and wet. The mood of death. |

"Go se!" It seemed like an apt response to the missile alert. Becker grimaced for an instance and try to force thoughts through his head at a pace that was beyond him. Things were spiralling fast; the ship abandoned and of interest to opposing parties, the ground crew cornered and in need of aid, and the shuttle holding important crew now in dire straits. "Haven't we dealt with this guy yet." Mike shared in frustration, then braced as Karyn would surely make for evasive manoeuvres. That left Becker to consider the next move. "We can't stay in the air. Do your thing then put us down." Mike then waited with trepidation to see how dealing with the missile went. All while trying to forumlate their next action. |

She was glad to see that Ian had been able to get rid of the six guys checking bodies without catching lead himself. She was relieved. Abe looked back and saw that one of the quad bikes had crashed into a house. Perhaps it was still functional? Based on what she saw from the shuttle that would be a boon for them in this situation, but she wasn't going to hold her breath. The one thing she liked was the silence of ground engines nearby. But then again, it was replaced by foot traffic and a hailstorm of lead headed their way. It centered on Ian though as it began to rain down way too close to his position than she liked. In his quest to get a good shot at the six, he had revealed himself and now a sitting duck for those returning fire. As she saw him move from his position he kept firing, but frowned when he ran out of ammo, but he was still armed and didn't weigh himself down with the empty weapon. He ran a ragged pattern, taking cover when he could. The one thing she did notice with complete clarity was the fact that no bullets were coming her way. They hadn't seen her yet. Well, well... she thought with a smile. As two more mercenaries broke the tree line, she subtly turned their way and fired a shot, nailing one straight in the forehead and turned to the other. He was searching her area for the origin of the bullet that took out his comrade, so she "played dead" for a moment, waiting for him to start looking elsewhere. She couldn't move or she could run the risk of being seen; she didn't want to reveal herself too soon. Who knows how many others might come out of the trees next. She looked over and saw that Ian was still faring well. That was good. God she wished she was up high. If she was, things would be much easier. Locate, point, shoot. Easy peasy. After a bit, she moved ever so slowly and took aim at the other guy, her finger on the trigger. If she got a good shot, she would take it. Once that guy was out of the way, she would look to get Ian and move to a safer, more secure area. Edited by abbey, Nov 3 2013, 07:50 PM.

Silently Biff rose up behind his prey and ended her in an instant. He barely noticed that she was female. The blood was on him. It was in his eyes flowing like dangerous rapids he eyed the next targets as the bulk of them seemed distracted by the chaos of gunfire. It was set on the hunt. The gunshots didn't concern him yet. He hated being underground. It brought something out of him. The war... On he crept instinctively knowing that his partner had done her part and was now with him at home here in hell..... ______________________________________________________________________________ Cole shook and steadied himself yet remained silent. The real test for both him and his new friends, captors?, would begin when they hit the ground running. He wanted to speak to them he had so many questions yet they were untested to him. He imagined that he was much the same to them. Crisis forges the strangest allies..... |

The Sky The inbound ordnance blazed lights and sounds from the console, forcing the small vessel out of the sky near the entrance to the caves. The missile veered off once the Blaze was low enough, hidden amongst the trees, but clearly the sky was no longer safe. The Glory crew had done what they could for Ian and his friend, now they were forced to ground. The Village More shots were exchanged, more lives and more blood on the hands of Ian and Abe as the cutthroats kept on coming. These shooters, whoever they were, weren't well trained. Instead, it seemed, their primary tactic was attrition. After a few minutes of back and forth, Ian and Abe were both being slowly pushed back, more and more boots entering the village every minute. The transport ship that landed on the outskirts must have been fully loaded - an entire platoon, one would have thought if it were still war days. Things were getting dire, though, and the hostiles were slowly making their way around the flanks. Sooner, rather than later, the Captain and Abe would have nowhere left to run. The Cave It was over quickly, the shouting and gunfire echoing through the entire cave system. From one side came Tobias, invoking the carnage of the Devil himself, and from the opposite came Biff and Sonya, silent and ominous as shadows. Blood sprayed the floor, villagers gasped in horror, and by the end the only sound was the two guards who had been by the caverns entrance, both on their knees before Tobias, Biff and Sonya behind them, begging for mercy. |

[- sorry, been out of touch for the most part, and trying to work up a strategy. Will be hard pressed to do much more the next few days. -] Karyn pushed back into her seat as she managed to duck the latest missile, going to ground and hugging into the edge of forest near the caves. The missile streaked by overhead and buried itself into the cliff wall. She nodded at Mike and shut down the Blaze's engines as they settled onto terra firma. "Ok, so what now? Do we have any sit rep from the rest of them?" |

Mike had held on for the ride and was now trying to catch up with the calm that had befallen the shuttle. With the pace his mind was keeping however, it was not easily done. Trying to control his breathing, he closed his eyes and took a step to lean toward the side of the shuttle. In a sudden burst, he flashed anger on his features and struck the wall with his fist. A second strike seemed set to follow, but he opened his hand before it connected with the steel again and opened his eyes as if waking up. With gritted teeth he shook his head and tired to regain his senses. A deep breath later, he addressed Karyn. "No. See if you can send him ours - Downed. Ship abandoned but lockdowned. And crew all here." This was not how he saw things going, and only now could he percieve faults in his decisions. "Okay." he turned to the rear of the ship, eyes on Trina and Cole. "How are we?" The ride would have been less than kind on the unprepared. |

Ian shouted to Abe. "Fall Back!! They're flanking us. Move back to the buildings to your right." THat was the direction the Blaze had dropped to the ground at. The only reason Ian knew they weren't dead was the chatter on the comm. It had all mixed together. All the death and carnage in Dolby 120.7 Surround Sound. "We'll lose them in the rubble and move toward the caves." He was down to his last four clips. Moving was now or never. |

Blood soaked the front of Biff's shirt as he automatically wiped his knife clean with every kill. At last it was over and the less then gentle giant Tobias Hawke was reunited with Sonya and himself. Biff gave a look at Tobias. "Do we know yet who these guys are working for?" His blade was still unshealthed and it sparkled in the dim cave lights. "If not I wouldn't be adverse to having a private chat with our friends here." He wouldn't mind having a chat with anyone who tortures civilians for sport. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Cole flinched slightly at Beckers show of frustration. Things were bad here for everyone. Then Becker asked about the crews well being. He didn't feel like he belonged but he nodded. "I'm good. Lets do this." |

Gulliver sheathed the knife, stripped off the covering jacket, wiped the blood away the best she could and ran to Ian. She scooped him up, spoke quickly to the others, "Back to the tunnels, take the west exit. Holding Ian she moved closer to Biff, Tobias and the prisoner. She held her son tight. "We'll be safe in the jungle, there are supplies there. We'll go deep, ... " She looked away, there was shame in running, but her son came first. Second.... and more. "i'll be back." Sonya said, though there was little in her voice that sounded convincing. |
