The arrival was rocky at best, though the brief turbulance was in the back of everyone's minds. On board the Glory everyone had their demons to deal with - memories long buried coming to light, old faces coming back as new ones, and burning spires of anxiety on the horizon.

It had been a good plan, given the circumstances. If it was anyone in the 'Verse who needed a hard earned rest, it was those on board this ship. It was Gulliver who'd made the suggestion of Greenleaf, a place she'd mentioned a few times during her time on board. It was a place she called home, a safe haven that would welcome the crew with open arms, and a tiny speck on the radar to anyone who might mean them harm.

That home was Cachetteen, the hidden village of the Brown Hill People.

And that morning, as the Glory broke through the atmosphere of Greenleaf to reveal the rolling forests and mountains and valleys below them, Cachetteen was burning.

Requiem for a Hawke
"Aww fuck."

Hawke was slammed back to reality. His eyes, of all things on the cave floor."

"Really? My last stogie. God I'm getting sick of this..." He growled, bending down to scoop up the stick. It was out cold, and he sighed, stuffing it into a pocket in his coat. As he did, he wiped his hand on the outside of the leather browncoat, still keeping the shield in the way. As he did, he clicked his comms on through the jacket... Whether by accident or not.

"Look... Haytham, was it? I dunno what kinda fun and games you like to play, torching villages and holding girls at gunpoint in dark caves..." Hawke squished his eyes, rubbing them with two fingers in exasperation.

"Kinda makes me sick, but then, whaddu I know? I'd say yer lucky I don't have reinforcements - if they were stupid enough to come here I'd shoot them jus' as soon as I'll shoot you..." Hawke straightened himself out, his words echoing in the caves and through his comms, his shield lowered slightly. His eyes locked on the woman in the man's arms, and they twitched to the right. Whether Haytham had any idea what was about to happen was beyond him. Whether Glory and co heard any of this at all was another thing entirely.

"But yer not lucky, not lucky at all - becuz' I just got real sick of your shit." His eyes flicked again, from the young woman to the right, then back to Haytham.

There was a flurry. Sweat drops didn't even have a chance to leave his face as Hawke moved - cold sweat and shaking hands or not, he knew what would be done - his will would be done.

There was a crack, that echoed so loud it was as if a firecracker went off at arm's length; the flash that filled the cave so bright that it burnt even Hawke's dark-filled eyes. His cannon was drawn and fired, the barrel so close to clipping the holster the bullet that charged from the barrel took a tiny piece of the leather with it.

His target?

Haytham's gun. Two birds with one stone - the gun, and Haytham's face when the gun collides with it.

If he hit.

It was good to see that Sonya took her explanation well. At least enough that she decided to let her be.

"Nice shooting."

Abe smiled at the compliment.

"I have a gift," she simply stated

"Until Mike gets here, Abe and I will cover our six. We have company."

Abe looked up and saw the other ship coming in. Yep... Company had arrived and she had the feeling that they weren't friendly. The fact that they left and are now back meant something. She didn't know what, but it certainly was important.

"It's a trap.?"

"You think?" Abe muttered under her breath as she began to reload her weapons. All her boys had to be at the ready. She knew that the gun at her ankle, Tiny Tim, and the one in her shoulder holster, Sam, had not yet been fired. She also knew that Lester was still in her case. Lester was a long range sniper gun and wasn't the kind you needed to be out if you wanted to move with any kind of quickness.

Then she saw Sonya step closer to Ian.

"love you. Always did. Still do."

Then she handed Ian the assault rifle and ammo before running to what Abe assumed were the caves Ian spoke of.

"Girlfriend?" Abe questioned once they were alone. She felt a pang of something odd inside her. Almost immediately she knew it was jealousy.

Jealousy? What was with that? She didn't have the right to be jealous. Hell, she didn't want to be jealous. She didn't want to feel anything at all towards the man - towards any man.

She had to cut that type of thinking off right away, so she decided to survey the scene, looking for a place where they could set up shop. Somewhere high. Somewhere they could watch each other's backs and take out as many unfriendlies as possible. She slung her pack over her shoulder and winced visibly, but it surprised her that she could do it at all, let alone be walking and talking. "Gorramit Captain, that Stem Dose is tres shiny!"

She slammed a clip into Dude and sheathed him. Realizing no one had answered her question before, she decided to ask again. This time she better damn well get an answer, especially since she only had an hour before she was gonna crash hard and probably die if they weren't secure in their positions.

"So you never said," she reminded him as she checked Wyatt and made sure he was loaded as well. "What in the Hell is happening here? Why are you here?"

Mike sighed and gritted teeth. His diffusion of responsibility had failed and the decision had fallen to the ranking authority om ship. As it should be. Much to his dismay.

Becker went for the call that he wanted to make. The one that didn't leace Trina with Cole. "With us. The ship'll be safe in lockdown, but..." He tried to word it tactfully, his eyes flashing a glance at Cole. "Safety in numbers right?" His view now rested on Cole. "We'll work out your role on the way." That was a delaying of decision of whether he trusted Cole with a gun.

"Let's go." He jerked his head for them to move toward the shuttle, and Mike knew he wouldn't resist an embrace with Trina as she passed him and kiss to her temple before she was released.

Static and feedback surged across the coms channel. "Sorry everyone that last earthquake collapsed a stairwell on top of me. I'm fine and topside. Good coverage coms was down but I'm up again. We have company heading from the direction we just came from. The ship that attacked Glory is in that grove." Biff stared down the barrel of his most trusted rifle and longest companion. "I'm going to need updated as to any orders bossman. I was out of the loop for a minute."

___________________

Cole was surprised by his own reflexes as the ship lurched up and his surprise made it impossible to catch Trina. After she righted herself he shrugged at her question of if he was okay. He almost spoke when Becker's voiced his orders. "I'm a little out of sorts still but she says you helped me and I really have no evidence yet to the contrary. Least I can do is return the favor until I figure out what is happening to me. Lead the way."

"love you. Always did. Still do."

Ian accepted her rifle, with some trepidation ... until he reembered what she had steapped on before he stepped out of a perfectly good ship some ten to fifteen feet above the ground. He smiled his cooked smile.

"I know."

He looked at Abe.

"Girlfriend?"

"Sorta. She's Ian's mother. I told ya about her and my son. Yes?"

He saw a look cross her face put passed it off due to other matters.

Jealousy? What was with that? She didn't have the right to be jealous. Hell, she didn't want to be jealous. She didn't want to feel anything at all towards the man - towards any man.

"Gorramit Captain, that Stem Dose is tres shiny!"

"You'll be for an hour, at most, then wish I had never given it too you."

He still smiled that crooked smile of his as he spoke.

"So you never said, ... What in the Hell is happening here? Why are you here?"

Before he could answer, he heard Biff on the Comm.

"Sorry everyone that last earthquake collapsed a stairwell on top of me. I'm fine and topside. Good coverage coms was down but I'm up again. We have company heading from the direction we just came from. The ship that attacked Glory is in that grove. ... I'm going to need updated as to any orders bossman. I was out of the loop for a minute."

"Biff, locate and support Sonya. She's moving toward the caves, after Hawke."

Again, he was about to reply when he heard Tobias.

"Look... Haytham, was it? I dunno what kinda fun and games you like to play, torching villages and holding girls at gunpoint in dark caves ... Kinda makes me sick, but then, whaddu I know? I'd say yer lucky I don't have reinforcements - if they were stupid enough to come here I'd shoot them jus' as soon as I'll shoot you ... But yer not lucky, not lucky at all - becyz I just got real sick of your shit."

'BLAM'

Into the comm he stated, matter-of-factly

"Toby, you better still be alive so I can kick yer Pi-Gu ..."

He looked to Abe.

"Real quick. Trouble with Nieska. Was to do a meet and greet, but Sonya's village, where Ian Jr. stays, was burnin. We diverted, came here, an you fell back into my life. ... Now, we are in the midsts of a trap."

Somehow, his smile never dimmed.

Sonya stopped and waited next to a small cliff that led higher, and also provide the roof for the caves. There was a cleverly hidden entrance there. All stone nearby so never a track or footprint to be left. A tree grew up along the rocky surface, but just behind was actually a passage.

One just stepped around the huge trunk, ducked under a blanket that blocked the faint light at night and there was the common tunnel down to the caves.

Sonya stood near it after her short sprint, she took out her pistol and held it in her left hand. Her right checked for the torch at her belt, clips for the gun, the flashbang and frag grenade. She waited. 'where the rut was Biff?'

Looking back she saw him, waited to make eye contact and then waved for him to follow. But then there was the sound of a gun. Then she stepped into the small tunnel and headed for the caves proper.

Mike was annoyed at how sincere Cole appeared. It left him doubting his doubts, and reminded him that all he was really running on bad feeling. A bad feeling and a dead man walking, was he really the only one that minded. Narrowed eyes focused on Cole briefly before he nodded. Their 'come to Jesus' meeting was soon to follow, but looking after the crew was Mike's first port of call. After the embrace with Trina, he led on to the shuttle.

A stop had been made so Becker could retrieve his rifle. He felt a ranged battle could aid them. His normal sidearms had stayed at his side for quite some time. Soon they were all approaching the shuttle, Karyn ushering their departure.

Before he entered the shuttle, Cole was stopped by Becker, then presented with the handle of one of his trusty irons. It was a leap, but Mike was somewhat convinced that for the meantime he had an ally. "You do what you can. Covering fire if that's it. Main aim is to keep ours safe." And with trust bestowed, Becker moved onboard.

"We're set K."

Karyn had settled into the shuttle's pilot seat and ran her preflight checks by the time Mike, Trina and Cole had arrived. She waved them to the passenger seats with Mike taking the co-pilot seat.

She throttled up and punched the disconnect button (the big red one) and the shuttle shook once as internal locks released and the landing skids tractored the small craft out of the nestled alcove in the side of Glory. As soon as the craft was free of Glory, Karyn lifted and turned the nose toward the village. Her plan was to fly overhead to get a bearing on the away team and spot any incoming pursuit.

"Mike, we know that the others were in the village, and the invaders landed back at our original LZ. I don't think we need to go to close to the enemy, since they already took potshots at us. Just thinking we fly a quick oversight to get a fix on situation and then react as necessary."
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me

Glory

As the group prepped for flight the ominous hum on an engine sounded from outside, dulled by the thick plating of the ships hull, but nevertheless identifiable as the growl of an engine. Some kind of land vehicle, a mule or the like, slowly circling the ship. Someone wanted to get inside.

The Village

Breaking off through the trees, Sonya and Biff were soon gone, leaving a barely patched up Abe and a more than confused Dugan left to cover their retreat. The town was a scarred field of debris, burning buildings and bodies, so cover was a plenty. Unfortunately, so were the directions of attack.

As Ian and Abe braced themselves for what was to come, the ominous buzzing of something mechanical slowly started to fade in, getting louder and louder. Before they knew it the hunters breached the treeline from where Ian and his crew had arrived only minutes before - two small quad bike, each armoured quite heavily on the sides and front, each with a pair of fatigue clad, assault-rifle bearing men on top. Immediately, gunfire started as the bikes roared into the village, looking to flank anyone who was left there. At first glance, it didn't seem that these scouts had noted Ian or Abe. Yet.

The Caves

The sound of Tobias Hawke's gun was usually pretty deafening, all things considered. Inside the close confines of the cave, the discharge sounded like hell breaking loose, the echo like a shockwave that followed the caves path.

Haytham, as he'd identified himself, was thrown backwards - his gun hand, and handgun for that matter, exploding into a mush of blood and metal. The bullet missed his head, though, skimming his cheek as a loud "Fuuuuuuaaghhhh!" escaped the mans lips. He spun, almost three hundred and sixty degrees, hitting the hard cave floor behind where the young girl was standing.

The girl herself had immediately dropped to a crouch, hands around her body. Once the echoing blast was gone, the only sound was her sobbing and the moans of pain coming from the merc.

Outside the caves, not far off the back entrance, Sonya heard the shot.

Requiem for a Hawke
Hawke sighed, lowering the still-smouldering barrel of the gun, the blast echoing in the dark.

He holstered the hand cannon - the barrel catching on the end of the chipped holster, an instance that surprised the man greatly. He stared down at his own hand, and found it shaking, just a fraction of a twitch visible in the dark.

Being the only free hand, he stuffed it into his trench coat, and pulled from it the somewhat mangled cigar. Producing another match, he hastily lit the stogie - sped only by the quivering flame that exacerbated how badly his hand was shaking.

Taking a long draw, he flicked the match away, the fleeting light scattering off the walls until it vanished midway to the floor.

"Last two months have been mighty fine, y'know. Jus' me and the black... So why is it then, every time you show up..."

He spoke, finally, letting the smoke bleed out of his lips as he looked to the ceiling. Exhaling, pushing the last of the smoke from his mouth, Hawke finally gazed down at the sobbing young woman.

"Everything goes to shit, eh?" He mumbled, letting his hand fall to the grip of his hand cannon, resting it idly.

"Shouldn't y'be dead, at any rate? S'what I remember last, at least..."

Calm down, Hawke, caaaalm down. Everything's about to go to shit. You're gonna jump all over the shop again. Just don't shoot. Don't. Shoot.

Or you'll put another one of them in the grave. And then they'll kill you.

He rattled at the shoulders, with each exhale, shaking softy, with a fine, cold sweat coating what little of his visible skin there was.

Through the hasty departure, Trina had put on a brave face. Cole wouldn't have known that during the secondary tumbles caused by Glory's unstable flight to the ground, the impact of shoulder to wall had awakened a dull pain. The gunshot wound was fully healed, as much as it was going to, but it still caused some ache when bumped the wrong way. Crashing into a wall was definitely the wrong way to bump it.

She'd taken the time to gather her med kit, accepted the squeeze from Mike, though she'd nearly given away that it had hurt, and now was settling into a seat on the shuttle. There were painkillers she could take, but she chose not to. Painkillers could be dangerous, an easy excuse to feel better when her body needed to heal naturally and she needed to know what her limits were. Slowly, she breathed in and out of her nose, trying to level out the pain.

It was only when Mike handed Cole a gun, one of his own, that Trina realized she had not stopped to get her own gun. That small detail put her more ill at ease than the pain in her shoulder even though the latter was lessening.

Abe nodded when Ian answered her question about who Sonya was. He had told her about both her and Ian Jr.

"So that's Sonya..." she mused. For some reason, she expected something else although she wasn't quite sure what that something else was.

As for the Stem Dose, he clarified a little more.

"You'll be for an hour, at most, then wish I had never given it too you."

She scoffed.

"Doubt that. Being alive although feelin' like Hell is always more desirable than being dead an' sent to Hell."

Funny. Abe didn't even apologize for what she did and most of the time felt justified for every kill she perpetrated, however she always believed that the afterlife would be a less than pleasant experience.

Then Ian was about to answer her about why they were there, but kept getting interrupted. She smile softly at him as he handled things, doling out orders and such. He was ever the captain. One of the best ones she ever served under. Always there to direct his crew the best way he could.

There was a crew member that had a staircase fall on him. It was something that could have ended much worse. Ian sent him off to cover for Sonya. They went off to the caves to meet up with someone named Hawke.

"Toby, you better still be alive so I can kick yer Pi-Gu ..."

Was something bad happening? Worse than the folks who would be almost on top of their position shortly? Ian looked at her and rattled off the explanation finally.

"Real quick. Trouble with Nieska. Was to do a meet and greet, but Sonya's village, where Ian Jr. stays, was burnin. We diverted, came here, an you fell back into my life. ... Now, we are in the midsts of a trap."

Niska? They had trouble with Niska? What the Hell happened? Inviting trouble from that man was not something you wanted. Abe had heard the stories and was unwilling to discount them.

And Ian Jr lived here? Dear God... No wonder Sonya looked like Hell. She didn't know how Ian was still standing there smiling. Ian Jr. could very well be dead and the death of all these folks could have been orchestrated by Niska himself.

As for the statement that she had fallen back into his life, she didn't know what he meant by that. Was he happy to see her, even after what she did? She didn't dwell on that. She had no time to do so. Like he said, there was a trap in progress and they were the intended quarry. She had unwittingly stepped into a big pile of go se.

"Well, we'd better get set up 'fore the enemy is on us. We would want to still be walkin' and talkin' once you find your son," she said with a strength that seemed to be growing inside her. She pointed up onto a small ledge with some cover up ahead. It was big enough for two. "Shall we set up there? Thin 'em out as they come towards us?"

Then there was the sound of ground vehicles arriving as bullets rained down in their area. Abe ducked down to avoid being seen. The guys were outfitted well. Armor on three sides and big ass guns on the top.

Armor... Abe smiled slightly. A challenge. Challenges were good. They made her more focused and right now, she needed focus. She only had an hour before the Stem Dose would fail.

"We need to get into position quickie fast," she said to Ian softly so not to alert the hunters to their presence. "Orders, Capt'n?"

One thing she noticed was that they had not seen the two of them yet. Something had to be done quick if they wanted to keep the element of surprise.

Abe suddenly wondered if there was a way to separate one of the vehicles from their current inhabitants. Those big guns... They looked fun to shoot.

Yeah... She knew she was a bit tweaked. But she was also good.

"Perhaps we need a Trojan horse? If only we could get control of one of those vehicles..." she mused out loud. "They'd never see us comin'."

She smiled at him with enthusiasm.

"We gotta thin them out first. Can't have them showering lead at us. Point the way."

Biff packed up and dropped his pack down to the first floor. He followed and slung his pack. Making fast work through the streets he reached the cave entrance and Sonya. They didn't speak just used hand signals they began to enter the caves. A thunderous shot though muffled with distance tensed every muscle Biff had and he pulled Suzanne into the ready position. Sonya knew the caves so Biff followed her lead. They were making fast progress and the hard work would soon be at hand.

Cole wrapped his hand around the butt of the weapon and it seemed to fit there. He thought it familiar but couldn't place where or how. Had he been a gunslinger before? He didn't think so but having the weapon seemed right. He followed Becker and Trina out of the medbay giving them both a nod.

"We need to get into position quickie fast. ... Orders, Capt'n?"

Ian thought quick as Abe spoke.

"Perhaps we need a Trojan horse? If only we could get control of one of those vehicles. ... They'd never see us comin'."

"True"

His mind raced as he put thngs together.

"We gotta thin them out first. Can't have them showering lead at us. Point the way."

He had looked where she had pointed and back at the two Cycles. It was no good. Too far away. He looked at the ground and his eyes lit up.

"Over there."

He pointed to a pile of the dead.

"Borrow in. When they pass, shoot them from behind. Move!"

He turned and dove into the nearest pile of the dead on his side of the main path. Sonya's Assult Rifle pointed in the direction of the on coming bikes.

Death herself sat next to the pile of dead that Abe would be in. Her lips parted in an expression of expactation.

Karyn winced as the others got settled in. "Looks like we got company."

She shifted sideways, glancing back at Mike in the other seat. Then shook her head.

She gunned the engines, the shuttle lifted off its cradle and slid across the top of the Glory, turning gradually to scout the area around the downed ship, until she spotted the vehicle ducking in and out of the shattered tree line surrounding the clearing. She tipped the nose of Blaze to point directly in front of the hover as it swung back out of cover. Her thumb stabbed the trigger, spewing depleted uranium rounds out at the enemy vehicle.

The Cave

The young girl stayed huddled on the ground, her face and torso lightly sprayed with blood from the near fatal shot Toby had just delivered. Still wavering, hands still clammy, the gunslinger was left in silence to hear the moans of pain coming from the downed mercenary.

Further down the tunnel, around the bend Toby had been approaching, two more men awaited him. They'd just rushed onto the scene having heard the gunshot, dressed in military fatigues and holding assault rifles. Neither had a shot of Hawke, but he knew they were there, catching a glimpse of some old wooden crates the two were hiding behind.

The back entrance, as was expected, had been bare. Sonya easily led the way, a narrow tube-like shaft heading down steeply towards one of the caves large caverns. Down below there was a glow of light and the echo of quiet voices. Sonya and Biff appeared from a small entrance, sitting upon a ledge that looked down on a large open cavern. There were armed guards here, old crates and even a dining table pushed to one side. This place had been lived in, either recently or in the past. Now, the main tunnel entrance was heavily guarded and a dozen or so civilians were huddled in the middle of the large chamber.

Amongst them was Ian. None had noticed the new arrivals as they were hidden slightly behind a small rock wall just heigh enough to crouch behind. The cavern was lit by battery fed torches and lanterns attached to the walls.

The Sky

Blaze soared high and true, the ground rushing away from the remnants of the Glory crew before they turned back and headed down towards the jungle. Outside Glory was a vehicle - like a civilian troop transport - which still had a few armed men and woman crouched in the back. A pair had already disbanded, working away with some mechanical device on the Glory's main cargo door. When the shuttle took off the dozen or so brigands below were startled, rushing to disband.

Once the combat began, there was no mercy. The vehicle was shredded by the tracer rounds, toppled onto its side from the force of the bursts Karyn unloaded into it. Those not caught in the spray dived to one side, directing assault rifles and submachine gun fire up at the flying target - to no avail, though, their small arms fire merely denting the small shuttles hull.

The Village

The two quad bikes sped into the village square, seemingly unaware of the two crew members hiding there amongst the grisly sight. They flew by where Ian and Abe had found themselves camouflage, not stopping to acknowledge the ruse, and continued on through the village, slowing down a little as they ducked in and out between buildings. For now, the Captain and his old acquaintance were totally hidden, each with a clear view of their assailants.

Once the bikers were on their second lap around, several more armed goons broke free form the jungle, moving slowly and meticulously with their rifles held to their shoulders. Six in total came from the jungle, scanning the village ruins for their prey.

As the passage opened up Biff observed the scene. Silently he sling his rifle and took out his knife. He looked at Sonya and nodded hoping that she would be able to control her emotions long enough for the deed to be done. They would only have one shot at taking the guards out silently. If they could whittle the number down before all hell broke loose it would be safer for the hostages. With a barely audible whisper he said, "Are you up to taking the guards out quietly?" He hoped that she would answer positively but as long as he knew her she had, and rightly so, been a wildcard.

No. That wasn't her plan at all. She figured she break out in a run and biff could open fire when they noticed her. His plan made sense. There were so many, but killnh people up close, without warning. Cold. Hard. Black.

Far from anything she'd ever done before.

Gulliver watched Biff's face, blinked once before looking back at the killers and terrorists. She slid the combat knife out and strapped the .50 cal pistol down.

"Tell me how to do it."

Ian agreed to the Trojan Horse idea. Abe grinned in anticipation. A challenge is always a welcome thing. Yes... She was just odd that way, but the focus involved with a challenge was quite optimal.

However, they didn't have time to get high and at the moment, they were out in the open. That just wasn't a good idea. They had to get cover somewhere.

"Over there."

Abe watched his line of sight until it reached his intended goal. She wrinkled her nose in revulsion. Did he really mean that?

"Borrow in. When they pass, shoot them from behind. Move!"

Abe moved quick like anyway and burrowed in as he directed. It was nasty. She was fine with the making of the bleeding part of a gig, but laying in it? Not so much.

"You owe me a hot shower, a good cleaning for my boys and a new set of clothes," she growled at him.

Ian got himself entrenched into his spot with his gun fairly hidden and she did the same, making sure she was ready to shoot at incoming folks as well as any who came back around or went past them. It would be good to make it look like there were a multitude of snipers firing on them and not just the two of them.

She watched as the unfriendlies moved about, but became more interested in the ones that broke free from the rest, moving slowly and scanning the area like she would have done.

They were most likely looking for survivors. She signaled Ian with her hand and pointed towards their impending enemies. She then counted really quick and indicated that there were 6 in total in that group.

Then she waited for instructions.

Or for when they just got too close.

She looked at her watch. Why did the time seem to be slipping away?

Ian communicated with Abe uning hand signals as well. He told her that he got her message and looked at the six men checking the dead. They would be on them soon. He looked back at Abe and signaled that she should still take out the two slids before turing to help him with the six.

He grabbed a fifty round clip and thumbed the rifles selector switch to full auto and aimed in the general direction of the men. With full auto, actually aiming was a niceity that wasn't needed.

As soon as the slids passed, Ian pulled the trigger and sweep the gun as he rose to a kneeling position. He sweep five times sending fifty rounds toward the men. When the gun clacked on the empty chamber he ejected the spent clip and popped in the fresh one. He thumbed the selector back to thrid round bursts and choose the remainer of his targets.
