interlude

Lucian Hollow speaks with his counterpart in the Underground.
"We have him Lucian. Call off your dogs and we'll make the payment discussed."

"Very well. I'll need 24 hours to contact, secure protocals."
Lucian had no intention of calling off his hunters. But now he knew who had betrayed him, double crossed him. And why. And when his dogs finished, and he was confident they would; He now knew what they'd be doing next.

"As you know Lucian, there's an Alliance Element on board. Their best agent. Perhaps another contract for your dogs to intercept?"

"Of course."
This was just getting too easy, thought Lucian.

ACT TWO
-------------

Travis, Slade, Sylandra, and Silvia made their way on board. Rose checked the crate for shipping, tipped the deckhands to make sure it would be accessable to the Hunters.

Drinks were poured in the grand ballroom. No sign of Seliator or his entrourage, though rumor mills were already running. "the rich corporate bigwig was sick and taking one last tour of the verse."

Pumping the crew for information seemed to confirm Seliator's location, the VIP quarters of course.

======================================================

It is now a day later.

Silvia and Newton have met on a neutral location. The offer to let them have Seliator for a short time is made once again, then he'll be released to them.

A comm with Lucian Hollow negates that. "He needs to be killed quickly. They have probably already started to extract information. Newton is stalling. And the Alliance wants him dead too, so expect someone else to be making a move."

When Seliator had been snatched from under them had been the first hint that perhaps this job had more layers than Lucian had first let on, but to then find himself smuggling weapons aboard a a luxury liner filled with who knows what else... Travis sighed, half listening to the conversation in the background. It was all too exposed and he wasn't one to often engage in negotiations. Then there were the whispers of war.

"They're stalling for time, he obviously hasn't cracked yet, or maybe it's something else...." he said calmly. "...and if the Alliance know he's here then we've little enough time ourselves."

According to the deck plan, the VIP room lived up to its name and was easy enough to find. Hitting them there was going to be difficult, especially with the purplebellies hot on their heels.

"If only we could draw them out." TK pondered aloud.

Sylandra shifted in the easy chair that she had commandeered. Dressed in casual jeans and white blouse, she tended to be mostly unnoticeable. She preferred the clandestine approach and although she could be the looker if she needed, fancy dress usually got in her way.

Like that other time I had to subdue gunsters while at that high grade hotel. Bother, was that a trip. Slipping out the door in a full length gown and using the belt to disarm that first thug. But it all ended in catastrophe. Bad times. Bad times, all around.

Her eyes slid from one suspicious suit to the nest; checking for the slightest hint of a bulge that would indicate someone carrying. As Travis murmured, she turned to look his way.

"I'm at a loss. Any ideas?"

Silvia just shrugged as she sank down into a chair and looked over the rest of the group, This has been taxing my brain a lot lately and I'm coming up with squat. I'm not used to working with others like this. She sips a bit of juice out of a glass and leans back to think, Newton's already hard at work trying to get the intel that he wants, which means we don't know what Seliator has already told him.

They had gathered their own intelligence.

. emergency action plans, which showed how the VIPs went to close by evacuation points, which were close to the entrances to the VIP areas.
. a few bribes resulted in the number in Netwon's group. Six, though they suspected a couple more staying out of contact. Newton, two more men, three women. They posted as medical and staff of a supposedly rich and sick man: Seliator. The medical staff on the ship made no visits to the VIP area.
. Rose made contact. There were Alliance people on board that were likely to be planning to capture Seliator away.

At least all they had to do was kill him.

Travis TK Kamino seemed to have made some progress. He had made contact with one of the 'medical' personnel that tended to the needs of the sick VIP, a.k.a. Senator Seliator.

===

While Travis was away, and avoiding the others to keep from breaking cover; Rose Renwick contacted Slade, Silvia and Sylandra over a VidComm. "Lucian Hollow is sending in a squad, supply docking ship, they'll be coming in wet."

Which meant all hell would be breaking loose if the Hunters didn't act fast, or first.
Or at all.

"You're to provide direction and assistance." Rose did not sound pleased. Innocent folk would be in the way. This operation was beyond assassignation now. It was war. Some would call it terrorism after, if it went wet. If it went... what a success could be called... well?

"I'll be signing off after this comm." Then I'll be at the pick up dockbay.

Rose's eyes narrowed, even over the mediocre VicComm she looked unhappy about the situation. She looked away, then back to the comm to her fellow hunters. 'anything?' she seemed to be asking.

"A sorry bunch of schemers if ever I did see one." The voice was of a young woman whom no one had even heard enter, silky and soothing and casual and even a little sexy. If the group were to turn, they'd have seen a young woman - perhaps a girl, for all they knew - standing only a few feet away. She was short, petite, long brown hair (up in a formal do, at the moment) and sparkling green eyes, like emeralds. Pale complexion and a killer smile on her face, no one who didn't already know the young fugitive would have sensed just how out of place she was wearing such a... revealing... scarlet red dress.

"Please. It's a pleasure. Stephanie Hendrix." Stephanie held a gloved hand out to whomever was closest - Silvia - and nodded politely in greeting. "A good friend of mine, a mutual acquaintance, told me that there was some business to attend to here tonight. No doubt you're the right folk to speak with about it, yes?" She moved in beside the group ordering a martini from the bar, her dress swaying to and fro as she moved - such elegance formerly unknown to Athena. Such a foreign feeling, being in a place of such class, such reputation. Being dressed like... well...

Please, Gods, kill me now.

Her smile betrayed nothing.

Sylandra looked directly at the new person, avoiding eye contact with Silvia. She sipped the gin and tonic casually while paying close attention to the other's attitude and stance.

"What do you have to show association with this Mutual Acquaintance? Anything?"

Silvia narrowed her eyes at the new comer to the group and shook her hand, Well Stephanie, which mutual Acquaintance would this be? The doctor crooked her mouth into a coy grin as she took in the younger woman studying her features and examining her for flaws, signs of weapons, anything that might seem out of the ordinary for a passenger on such an exotic trip.

Steph had the usual armaments - a handgun to her thigh, a blade to her hip - though she'd gone about all the usual precautions to avoid having either detected. Besides, she wasn't here to use them. Not yet, anyway. The young lady simply fluttered her eyes, nodding in formal greeting to each of the group.

"Why, I believe that'd be Mr Hollows. A good friend, he is. Said there were some folk on board looking for... well, you know." The young woman slid across to a bar stool, order up some sparkling martini for herself, giving Silvia a constant smile that said 'just try me'. Once the drink had arrived, some cleavage had been flashed at the bar man, and the group were alone again, Stephanie's demeanor dropped to something a little more sinister.

"I'm here to get paid. Do we have a plan yet?"

Meanwhile, up in the forward cargo bay. The supply ship had brought plenty of creme'de'bollonese and prime rib; among other things this group of passengers seemed to be going through with great relish.

Then the teamsters that had brought the goods unloaded a few other crates, they'd be staying over a few hours while the mechs looked over their Fenz Capacitor and Recipricating Lines. Didn't want the ship to explode when it undocked from the liner.

Once alone, out came the weapons and body armor. Half a dozen looked over the floor plan of the ship; those guarding Senator Seliator and of course Seliator himself. "extraction point here." and the VIP air lock was tapped.

They were dressed in black. Had no identification. Wet operations with the certainty that any and all of their actions would be disavowed and denied by their government and corporate employers.

They want Seliator's information.

"Let's go get it."

Sylandra got a creepy feeling running up the back of her neck. She elevated herself from the lounge chair and nodded at her companions, especially Slade, dressed all in police type gear.

"Time we get our gear out of storage. Things are about to start popping and soon."

[- where is our cargo stored? -]

The doctor just smirked at Stephanie as she looked over at her comrades, Whatever we do, we better do it quickly if there's a wet team coming in. Silvia leaned in close to Stephanie and whispered for the other woman to hear, I'll give you half my share if Newton dies too. The doctor knew a good killer when she saw one and then as she straightened up and took a sip of her juice she just smirked and nodded before speaking in a normal tone, Think about it, it's a personal matter. If the doctor couldn't kill Newton herself, why not enlist some help.

A final transmission came in from Rose Renwick, "Company has boarded. Private contractors coming for the live cargo." That should tell them Alliance, they'd want Seliator alive.

"Getting signal jamming. Could be more operatives, unknown source. I'll be at VIP air lock, send low wave squelch on pre-set channel when you want me to dock it up." there was a rumble over the open channel.

"Getting crowded out here."

"Out."

Sylandra stepped close to Silvia. "Get ready t' make your move on the Senator. And Newton too, if that's your wish. I'm doin' a distraction, followed by guardin' best I can those comin' up here. There's stairs and elevators. I'll do my best, with luck slow them down a bit. Do what you need t' do. "

[- I'm assuming here that we are on the third deck lounge area, where the VIP is on the 4th (topmost) and the invaders are coming in from the lowest level/cargo deck -]

Syl slid her hand into her bag and fingered the small cylinder there, hooking her finger into the wire loop. She made her way to the Grand Staircase and stood between the lift tubes at the back of it. She watched the lifts arriving and departing, and occasionally glanced down the Welcome Stair. When one of the elevators opened and was empty, she stepped halfway in and blocked the doors from closing. She punched the button for the floor below, and dropped the smoke grenade into the elevator, stepped out and let the door slide shut.

With the lift now presenting a smoke screen below, she leaned over and called down "FIRE!" to the crowd below. Crouching down, she reached into the bag, sheltering her actions in its deep folds while she screwed the silencer onto the short barrel of her PLR-16. She settled into a shooters stance to watch for anyone coming up the Stairway gun still tucked away but ready.

[- for reference, she is at the green spot on deck 3 between the Welcome Stair and the Grand Stair -]

Stephanie grinned, sipping at her drink, as she watched Sylandra activate the plan. Smoke, people started screaming, and a perfect vantage point for whoever might be coming up those stairs. Seemed like a solid approach, if only for a while. It'd buy some time, that's for sure.

"And then we went." He said quietly, winking at Silvia before rising from her seat, scouting out the quickest way to get upstairs. Their target was up there somewhere, unknowingly waiting for there little ragtag team, and Athena was counting on it being her who got their first.

"Shall we?"

Silvia giggled and smiled at Stephanie, We shall. she pulled out a few scalpels out of her medical bag and skipped towards the stairs in a merry fashion. Either the doctor's lost her mind here or she's enjoying the thought of what's going to happen when her crew gets upstairs. Looking out of the stair well the doctor could see the silhouette of one of the guards through the smoke and flicked a blade at his neck before she slipped into the hallway and watching for further guards to come her way.

DECK 2 and 3:
The smoke was causing quite a panic. The few guards or ship's crew seemed to be heading in all directions.

DECK 3:

At the bottom of the welcoming stairs a sudden flurry black dress soldiers, ship's security, and soldiers in brown camoflage (Supposedly Lucian's wet squad). The men in black had the advantage. Three of them turned to hurry up the stairs, they had light armor for speed and small sub-machine guns. Below the black squad fired off a deadly spray of lead and flames.

A pressing of people started out of the Dining Salon and Casino (Deck 3, rooms 14 and 17). Soon they would swarm the staircases. The elevators had stopped at whatever deck they were on and a light indicated they should not be used in case of fire.

ENTIRE SHIP:
There was a slight shudder, as though an explosion of some magnitude had just gone off.

DECK 4: Silvia and Stephanie made it to one of the hallways leading aft to the VIP section. A group of 8 or 9 were at the far end. Led by Newton, he made eye contact with Silvia and shouted in Chinese, "Move". and the group scurried back to the VIP quarters. For just a second it looked like T.K. Kamino might have been in the back of the group.

A smoke grenade came tossed from their retreat. Then another. And another. The patter of feet then. From the second hall leading aft were more footsteps.

ENTIRE SHIP:
"Attention. This ship is now in control of the Pirate Fleet of Tobias Hawke. All valuables will be collected. Open your cabin doors and stand away from them. Resistance will be met with deadly force."
Another voice then, that well heard voice of the Captain... maybe: "Ignore that threat. Get to lifepods and shuttles. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!"

Gunshots, explosions, screams could be heard from speakers throughout the the ship. Not real ones, the hunters recognized the scheme:

Panic!

Sylandra winced at the confusion below, realizing that it wasn't QUITE all her fault. The arrival of the men in black body armor just confirmed her fears. She pulled her gun from the bag, and took a semi-prone stance at the corner of stairs and the little half wall balcony. She let loose a long burst at the three men running up the stairs, cutting them down at the ankles and legs. As they lost their footing, they would fall into the hail of 5.56mm full metal jackets.

As the screams from the gallery and lounge indicated crowds approaching, she slid back and raised her weapon to send a short spray into the ceiling, announcing danger around the stairs leading down. "HEAD FOR THE AUDITORIUM! WE"VE BEEN BOARDED! SAFER THERE THAN DOWN STAIRS!"

Then she pulled a second clip from the bag and switched the partially empty mag from her gun to the fresh one.

Stephanie was surprised at how fast the proverbial shit had hit the fan - it was like the good old days when folk didn't care and just wanted a modest spray this way and that. Regretting that she didn't have a heavier weapon on hand, the young girl flicked off her heels and took stride at Silvia's flank, bare feet silent against the flooring. Her first priority was to get a new weapon, the compact handgun now firmly in her grasp only a temporary arrangement.

Spotting Newton at the end of the corridor, Steph squeezed off a few rounds at the group before taking cover. Instead of receiving return fire, though, a long field of smoke presented itself - they'd chosen flight. She grinned at that - there was nothing she loved more than the hunt. Nodding to Silvia, knife now in her off hand, Athena darted off into the smoke, hoping to catch up to their prey. Noting Mr Kamino's position at the back of the group that she was headed for, Stephanie just smiled to herself.

Right where he's meant to be.
