It has been two long months since events on board the IAV Ziggurat. Now it's just called The Fall. Having survived the chaos of Verbena and making it off world alive, Ian Dugan and Tobias Hawke find themselves staring up at the night sky of the planet Ghost, a nearby gas giant, the aptly named Zeus, sat lazily on the horizon. Things had gotten rather messy in the Kalidasa sector of late, and the small planet was now being used to dispose of the various remains. The air stank of death, a scent the pair were all too familiar with now. It shouldn't be long now...

Roughly 300 miles above, the Glory slowly dipped into the planets orbit and began their descent. Captain Becker stood on the bridge, trying to catch a glimpse through the think clouds below. Having spent weeks trying to locate Ian, break the blockade somehow and rescue them, but with no luck. Just as he was about to give up, a coded Cortex message bounced to the ship, with only a set of co-ordinates. He hoped it wasn't a trap, Niska just rubbing it in, but something felt right this time, like maybe this could be for real....

Sonya watched on the comm screen, muted from the bridge end.
It was another body brought back to life, devistating injuries repaired;
testimonials of those present clearly just a breath away from swearing to the impossibility of it.

She'd heard of Cole over the last two months. Really know one knew him, but one thing they did know.

He was dead.

This was Cole.

Not dead.

Sonya rose as if in a trance, like a zombie now called to the ju-ju of the moment.
"I'm going aft." She said to Karyn, and she made her exit straight along the lower deck to the med bay not far away.

....

Gulliver entered, walked to her brother ghost; she looked at Trina a moment. She laid a hand on Cole's forearm. "When it happened to me... " It was what... traumatic... yes to say the least; but then there were god knows how many people rutting with her mind. "... there were a lot of psycho... hallucinations."

She hoped Trina understood. They'd been through this, Sonya's experiences: Dead, resurrected, mind-rutted, tricked, fooled, twisted. Why were they being shown this? What was this happening to Glory?

'think' what was the authentic real first memory....
none.

there wasn't one. There still wasn't, the memory of events just prior, leading up to the death. Gone, gone, gone.

"He won't remember."

Gulliver looked at Trina, surely she realized that telling Cole the context .... Sonya smiled. She was glad she wasn't the doc.

Requiem for a Hawke
"He oughta be fine, if that thing was workin' right. Might wanna get somethin' ready to even him out - y'tend to wake with a bit of a fright outta those things."

A somewhat familiar, gravelly voice came from the Medbay's doorway, though its owner stood just out of sight.

"That ain't what I'd be worried about though." The doorway darkened, almost as if it were giving way to the man's presence. Hawke stood there, briefly, amber eyes locked to the body with a grimace.

With perhaps more caution in his step than was expected, the tower moved into the medbay and up to the crate, bending his way around those present, and keeping his distance from the curly blond one. Leaning on one foot slightly, the massive man gazed over the bare body of the crew's 'fallen' comrade.

"I'd be worried about what he stole from ol' Adelei." With his only hand, Hawke slipped free of his browncoat's added pocket, and traced a line in the air along the vertical surgical scar on the frozen man's chest. He eyed the figure in its entirety, the look on his face suggesting little more than curiosity.

Adelei.

"If it's what I think it is..." Hawke cleared his throat, turning back to Ian specifically, staring down at the man as he reached up to tap over his own heart with two fingers, twice.

"Then Mr Sourpuss Skyplex will be out to revoke his new lease on life quicksmart."

Adelei... Adelei Niska. Adelei Adelei Adelei.... First name basis... Why?...

Turning slowly, Hawke gazed sidelong down at the curly blond they called Sonya, from across the crate. The shadow cast by his dusty old wide-brimmed hat masked his grimace somewhat, but perhaps not enough as he eyeballed the girl.

Why would it please me so much for you to know I'm alive, Adelei?

"Sorry about before, in the galley, with all that..." He sighed, looking her straight in the eyes. Who the hell was this and what had he done with the notorious Hawke? What had he seen in her eyes just now, what had he understood from her state, her words, to make this reaction? Looking up, Hawke unfocused on the distance outside the medbay door.

... Because I know one of the little things in this 'Verse terrifies you, Adelei.

"If yer dead-set on keepin' him breathin' under Adelei's boot..." He turned on the balls of his feet, and moved to the door. The great beast of a man still spoke directly to Sonya - not Ian, oddly. "When y'need somethin' - anythin', jus' whistle."

Me.

"I'll come runnin'."

He paused at the entrance to the bay, hand back in his pocket, shoulders hunched.

... But why?

"Sorry 'bout yer friend."

.... Which one? Hawke sighed again, rubbing his eyes.

Tobias had a flash of images that suddenly ripped through his mind. He saw a ship going down in flames and shadow of a man killing anything in his path aboard a ship. An escape pod being jettisoned. The words "Siren's Call" on the hull of a ship burned in his mind. He felt severe pain that made him collapse to one knee as the images abruptly stopped.

Ian moved to hid friend.

"Tobias."

He kept his from hiting his head on the deck. He knew that Tobias didn't like being touched and expect a punch for his trouble, but Ian was ready. His friend was in trouble. That was all that mattered.

Sonya tried to brace up, if he was going to start in again. But he was looking at her all funny. not the ha-ha funny, or the 'thinking of you naked' funny; but the crazy way one not-right person looked at another maybe...

He gave an apology, which was unexpected. Sonya cocked her head a little. It was like he was looking in a mirror, trying to see himself in her eyes. Then he seemed to blink somewhere else and his attention and the hypnotic gaze broke away.

Gulliver took a half step forward from the mesmerizing affect, bumped gently into the device, not enough to do anything. Then stepped back. She was going to say 'ok.' or 'no worries'; but her mouth just sort of hung open.

'wah the ruh'

"Heh." Gulliver finally spoke, looked around; a questioning look to see if anyone knew why he was speaking to her. She figured something clever or something ... all she could come up with was .... flirty...
She lifted a hip and went with a sultry reply,
"yeah, I know how to do that." whistle she meant. Everyone would get that right? you know, 'put your lips together and...'

Then gigantus-mysteriorus was headed out, and then he had his insane cyborg moment and went with a jerk to one knee.

Ian was there. Captain motherly, which was a rare sight even to her. Like he approached their son, but still on his guard. Always, except when he was with their son.
'mhmm.' she'd never really seen that clearly before.

Requiem for a Hawke
Images flooded his mind all in an instant, mere seconds passing before the onslaught was over.

Fire in the black. Burning. Screaming. Begging for mercy. No quarter given. Lightning. Metal shearing. Jets burning. Fire. Siren's Call.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The blond's flirty comment was drowned out by a piercing scream, an inhuman voice at a stomach churning pitch shattering every piece of glass and mylar around Hawke. No one seemed to react, but Hawke's eyes bulged, his pupils almost vanishing. Every piece of metal in his body seared in white hot pain, as if electrified to melting point all at once. The windows of the med bay, every beaker and syringe that had detonated under the piercing howl suddenly retracted perfectly, a complete reversal as a drop of blood snaked its way out of his nose...

He blinked. The world had shifted. Sweat dripped from his forehead, plinking on the metal grating of the floor bare inches from his face. Hawke seemed to be suspended upside down by a force other than himself.

The windows, the beakers, the syringes, all unmoved. Everyone present, still milling about the crate with the frozen carrier, as if they hadn't just heard that godforsaken, haunting wail, as if everything hadn't just shattered around them.

Because it didn't. Sh*t.

Sweat dripped again as his sensations came back to him. He had been out all of a second. Hands gripped him somewhat roughshod by the shoulders, barely supporting his weight. Crosseye had come to the rescue. Balling his only hand into a fist, Hawke slammed it into the metal floor, taking the brunt of his own weight again.

"Crosseye." He nodded curtly, speaking with an unexpectedly grateful tone, then hocking loudly and clearing his throat. If it was anyone else, any of the others present, Hawke would have pushed that fist into their face. Ian had earned that reaction enough in the past few months to be given the benefit of the doubt - and in a very strange way, small thanks. Pushing hard with his legs, trying to contain the quivering weakness in them, he rose again, reaching out to swipe Ian's hands from his form.

"I'm 'right, I'm 'right, jus' gettin' my spacelegs again is all - keep yer hands on the crewsicle there, ladies." Hawke grunted with a small smile down at Ian, but as he fully straightened out, adjusting his hat with his free hand, his voice dropped low.

"Crosseye... Ever heard o' the Siren's Call?..."

Biff was floored with the body in the box. Since he had come on board he heard the tragic tale of Cole Jagger. Whatever happened to Cole is what tainted this crew and hung in the atmo almost tangible sadness. Madness!

Biff felt the apology from Hawke terse but sincere. He stayed silent not having known Cole at all.

Tobias' seemed to seize and comes up asking about a Siren's Call. Things were going to get disjointed here really quick. While listening to the men talk Biff turned to Trina. "Trina, if we get Cole to the gurney can we strap him down? If he's well enough to even wake up he shouldn't do it in that crate." A thought came to Biff suddenly. "Someone should tell Khei. She took Cole's 'death' harder then most."

Trina didn't understand what Sonya had said about Cole not remembering, at least not until another voice joined the conversation. Her gaze shifted from Sonya, to Cole... and then to Tobias. Pieces were floating, falling... no, crashing into place. All three had died. And all three were alive and breathing. All three connected to the Ziggurat. What in the name of all things holy were they doing on that ship? And how does Niska figure into this?

Biff's voice broke through the moment. Trina hadn't moved to help Tobias. He'd pushed her away the last time she'd tried, and Ian knew the man better. At first, she nodded to Biff's suggestion, but then he mentioned Khei. "Oh god...." She knew about the conversation Mike had shared with Khei and knew she wasn't going to take this well. "Mike... go find her. Please! Before she just walks in. It'll shock her too much..."

There was an urgency, bordering on panic in her voice as she started to move. She laid her hand held on the edge of the crate and set it to record the vitals that had been monitored by the crate. "Biff, help me lift him. You're right about him waking up in here. He'll be in enough shock waking up after this..."

Someone is playing God... on levels only theorized by the medical community. How? Why would they do this? What happens if they remember the trauma? Having seen the fall out of psychological trauma that came with severe and traumatic death, Trina was sorely afraid. She could feel the familiar and eerie chill of death, but there was no sound of the clock from her clinic. Time wasn't running out. Time was stopped.

And she was whispering unawares. "Do no harm... do no harm..."

Ian flinched from the sound of the impact of Tobias's fist into the deck. He had expected it to be his face. It had happened before. Ian knew, sooner or later that it would again.

Once Tobias stood and brushed Ian hands away, he stepped back letting the big man stand on his own

from Tobias

Crosseye... Ever heard o' the Siren's Call?..."

"Cant say that I have. Siren's Song, yes."

He looked over to the far corner of the room where a red headed woman that should not be there sat. She shouldn't be there because Ian knew she was dead. He had buired the body afterall.

"The Song belonged to the family of one of our crew before she died. Some ole Browncoats bought it a while back"

He was remembering a dream he had with Sareen. The woman who had died. The ghost of the woman nodded her recollection at Ian from her perch in the corner.

"But I cant say as I remember the Call at all. What do you know of it?"

Requiem for a Hawke
Hawke turned, watching the drama begin to unfold around the popsicle with a small nod. In some strange way, he was glad no one was wasting time on him when more pressing matters needed attending. It was an odd moment of realisation for Hawke, finding that he wasn't the 'pressing matter' for once in yonks.

People moved around like a group, a crew, a family, organising and planning and helping each other, and they seemed to break around him like waves over a rock... Or, perhaps, like current through coral? Was this what it felt like to be... Normal? Part of the crew?

No, see, that feeling's when they're all charred corpses around you and the ship's on fire and hull-breached. Right? You've been crew plenty o' times before, right? Right Havoc? A taunting voice chirped gleefully in his mind, a warped perception of his own self.

Gazing down, Hawke snapped to, listening to Ian as he spoke of another ship and another time.

"Memories. Reckon I burned it inside out, an' every soul aboard." Hawke muttered with a sickeningly candid tone back to the short captain. "Hope they had it comin'..." Was that a pang of regret? He caught Ian staring at something across the room, something far away from the chaos that had begun to unfold, and followed his line of sight.

Hawke blinked twice, and stared, cocking his head to one side ever so slightly.

"What's her name?" He nodded subtly.

Karyn saw on the console that they were approximately 4 hours out from Greenleaf. No contacts were observed on the radar. Khei had taken up the Co-Pilot seat and had been rather quiet, resting her arms and chin on the console and looking out the helm window into the vastness of space.

Med-bay

Mike wasn't much for processing everyone else's input. To be haunted by a ghost was one thing, but to be haunted by the flesh...

He barely processed Tobias's entrance as his mind raced, but the commotion that came from his collapse was somewhat of a stirring event. Becker's eyes widened and attempted to acknowledge the presence of others. He rose from the bed, and stepped back towards the star item of the med-bay.

"That can't be..." He didn't finish, not with Sonya claiming to be living proof of what Cole had just suffered. But Becker wasn't sure how much he truly believed. "We're saying they've come up with a cure for death?" He let that hang in the air. On what he had seen and even more one what Khei had seen, this was an impossibility and even the alternatives were far fetched.

Mike finally conceded a nod to to Trina and her request, sympathetically understanding her concern. "Run some scans on him, see how well he matches up with Cole. I-" He cut off his own speech, and looked to Biff, his favoured security presence in the room. "Don't be so trusting." With one last look over 'Cole', Mike exited the med-bay and put in a search for Khei.

Bridge

"Expected to find you at the engine," he spoke to Khei as he entered, surprised that he had not found her there first. He nodded to Karyn, before closing the door to the bridge. He didn't want Khei rushing off beyond his grasp.

Mike took steps toward the console, and stood beside Khei's chair, gazing out at the black with her. His mind still lay of the contents of med-bay.

The Stars like Dust.

Karyn ran that old quote through her mind as she and Khei sat at the bridge console. This was the Quiet Time; still hours before her skills would be needed, yet the anxiousness of arrival biting at the back of her mind. Talk was unnecessary, and everyone else seemed to be occupied by activity in the med bay. When Khei had wandered up, Karyn stiffened for a brief moment until she realized who it was. The caution that she felt in having that other hulking monster on board... it left a bile taste in her mouth and butterflies in her abdomen.

When Mike arrived, she smiled and turned in her chair to face him and Khei. "We're still four hours out. Making good time, and no interference. What's been happening back there?" She tilted her head back toward the bridge hatchway, indicating other parts of the ship.

Bridge

Khei looked back at Mike and smiled briefly before returning her gaze to the helm window. "Sometimes.. I feel like just staring out there.. You know? It helps to lose yourself for a spell."

Med Bay

Remy was among those gathered around the crate. He saw Trina and Biff attempting to lift Cole when he immediately stepped in. "Trina. Let me help.." Remy grabbed Cole's legs as Biff reached under Cole's arms and grasped his shoulders. Cole was then lifted with ease to a nearby medical table. "Should we get him a blanket or something?" Even all that Cole had been through, he still looked peaceful.

Remy had then looked in the crate and saw a small black device with an antenna that Cole was laying on. A red blinking light kept flashing on it.

"Ian..?" Remy signaled him with a look of concern on his face. "What is this??"

Tobias caught another glimpse of Cole only to experience another intense flash of images in his mind. Tobias saw himself shooting Cole aboard the Horizon. He then saw Cole confronting him in a corridor that was dimly lit with flickering lights. Cole's eyes pierced Tobias's soul as he raised his gun and fired. Tobias was frozen with fear. FLASH. The muzzle fire lit up the area as the bullet exploded out of Tobias's head causing him to fall to the floor lifeless. PAIN! Then nothing. Why was I so afraid. What is happening to me...? An unknown voice of a man whispered in Tobias's mind.. "You must kill him.. Finish what you started."

Michael conceded a small chuckle. He had a fondness for stargazing from the bridge with little to no thoughts running through his head. "Yeah." A soft smile held on his lips.

Turning his head, Becker caught up with Karyn's question. "It's er... interesting back there." Mike didn't want to go into details. Not in front of Khei. "Hey, keep a good eye on the scanner. I think we wanna try and make it to Greenleaf without contact." A subject changer, and an important note none the less. Becker moved around to behind Karyn's seat as he spoke, taking the opportunity any readings that were showing.

Sonya stepped back as Ian and Tobias had their moment. She knew better than to be near two deadly killers when one of them was a lunatic.

BRIDGE:
She followed Becker to the bridge. Before she could matter of factly blurt it all out, she realized Mike was taking a more diplomatic approach. with Khei.

'right'

Gulliver moved next to Karyn. "You want to take a break until we vector in for our approach?" she expected a negative, pilots liked the quiet time on the bridge. But then Karyn had been 'just' a pilot for a long time. And the bridge was getting crowded, not really the best time to be drifting along in the Black alone with just your thoughts and the verse laid out in front of you.

Biff was glad that Cole was out of the crate and marveled at how inhuman a man can look stuffed in a box. Turning to answer Remy, he saw where Remy was looking and followed his gaze. "Yeah I'll grab him....one....." Seeing the small device with the flashing light Biff pushed his friend out of the way closed the crate back up. "Everyone MAKE A HOLE!! He began dragging the sled back out of the medical bay away from the bulk of Glory's crew. It could be the trigger for the message from Niska but it had the smell of a trap and it was better safe then sorry.

Karyn smiled up at Sonya as the other stepped over behind her, offering a relief. "Thanks. I could use a stretch. We're still on auto and a few hours out. Nothing on the screens, either."

She stood and traded places with her "twin" before moving toward the hatchway. Mike and Khei looked like they needed a little time to themselves as well. A sudden pang touched Karyn's chest. It had been a long time since she was looked at like that.

She stepped through the doorway and took a few steps back through the passageway leading to the open area of the cargo loading area. Just then, Biff backed out of med bay pulling a crate on a grav sled. He looked ashen and frantic.

Trina kept an eye on Cole's vitals, despite the thoughts spinning in her head. Biff suddenly seemed a little panicked as he started to push the crate back out. "Remy... lay him here..." She started to point towards the bed on which Cole had died and then changed her mind, pointing to the other.

He won't remember... that's what Sonya said... but how? Did they do to him what they did to her? To Tobias? The symptoms, or side effects, began to compile and align in her head. Taking a deep breath, she pushed everything to the back of her mind. They had no idea whether Cole was even going to survive the re-awakening process.

"The re-awakening process is going to be enough of a shock. I don't think having an audience, familiar or not, is going to help." Trina spoke clearly, raising her voice though her tone stayed calm, even if the calm in it was exceptionally forced.
