A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

The Bradford

A handsome young man walked up to Daiyu as she watched the last of the meteors fade from the sky. "My name is Clarence. May I join you?" He was five foot nothing with sandy colored hair cut neatly short. His dress was that of a rural farmer though it was much nicer then any she had seen since coming to this town. "If I am not being too bold I would like to..." He stumbled on the right words. ".... That is um I would enlist...." his face flushed "... The shooting stars shown dim next to your beauty and ..... if you've time may I have the ....honor of you company?" The last word came out breathlessly as if he had just surfaced from underwater and he gasped.

The Grey Reyne

The crew was to meet the buyer at the schoolhouse. Living at the school the point of contact was one Matron Gnost who would complete the transaction.

(OOC: It's indeed night time. :) )

Daiyu's brow quirked in mild interest as she slowly sipped upon her glass of tea. The display outside really was quite something. The companion was certain that she would never tire of the beautiful display that the sky offered in these small towns. One could always see far more in a rural town than they could int he city; it was humbling, really.

Her admiration for the night sky, and subsequently her peace, was suddenly interrupted by the man that had approached her. As a stranger in strange land, Daiyu felt that she had no choice in the matter. As much as she would have liked to shoo the man away, she simply smiled and gestured for the man to take a seat at the table.

"Charming." She replied with a soft voice, giggling a bit as the man managed to fumble with his words as if he were a school-boy with a crush. "But...Guild Laws being as they are...There is a client registry." Daiyu did her best to let the gentleman down nicely, her smile never faltering. "It would be improper of me to offer my business to someone not in the registry."

In truth, she had gone outside the registry before. Usually when she could tell that someone had wealth enough to afford her services. On this planet, she just couldn't tell. Clarence wore the dress of a rural farmer, but he wasn't dirty and his clothing was a might bit fancier than anything she had seen so far. But, that did little to speak of his wealth. It wasn't hard to be the richest man in a town of destitute's, as it were.

"What do you do for a living, Clarence?"

Lupin’s attention turned to Carrie and like the captain he was taken a little off-guard to see her all glammed up, “You look stunning.”, he chimed in after the captain and smiled sincerely for a brief moment before giving Eli his due attention.

Taking in a long breath he thought over what Eli said. “Yeah I did.” He nodded a little bit as he reassured himself in his decision, “I would like to stay aboard and to have a chance to get to know everyone better.” he wore a warm grin as he was satisfied with his decision and with the way things has turned out so far. The cool air from the opening doors was a welcomed adjustment from the stale air he was familiar with from the big city and the closed quarters in space. He smiled as he looked forward to the change of scenery.

Africa tried to dress plainly, but ended up putting on some very cheap jewelry and actually using some make up. She was feeling a bit on the brazen side, for her anyway, after her notorious first cigarette.

Seeing new sights, especially in places she'd never dreamed of visiting just a few years ago was exciting enough. And now she'd be walking elbow to elbow with her very own crew. She felt a bond already, the moments on the salvage.

everying was being exagerated, she knew that. The experience rushing through her with too much passion. Yet she welcomed them, this was what had been missing in the years and years of martial training.

Real Life.

Chamberlain approached the Captain, the First Mate and the Stowaway as the latter made a bold comment to the XO. 'wow' she thought. Both that the engineer second in command was pretty stunning and that Mr. Lupin would just blurt it out like that.

Of course, that's what real people do isn't it? Africa smiled. Yes they did.

"Excuse me Captain, since you had nothing for me; I'd like to take leave until morning. Oh six hundred O.K.?"

"Good. Good." Eli patted Lupin on the shoulder with a sincere smile. The pair had only come to know one another as much as a Captain and a previous stowaway could have in the weeks they shared on board, but Arsene seemed to be the genuine kind he could use on board. Likewise, there was no doubt his skills would go to waste.

"Well, straight off the bat then, I've got something for you to keep busy with. I'll take Monte and Carrie to deliver the goods. Not sure how long we'll be on planet, but in any case I might not have time to go scoping around town. Feel like taking a walk?" He turned to see Africa approaching and gave her a nod before finishing with Lupin.

"See if there's any work to be done. Keep an ear out for any word on our contact. Just... get a good feel of things, yeah?" It was the military side of the Captain kicking in a little - reconnaissance taking to the top of his list - but it couldn't hurt to get an idea of where they were and what kind of folk they were dealing with.

"Excuse me Captain, since you had nothing for me; I'd like to take leave until morning. Oh six hundred O.K.?"
Eli turned to greet her after a final, short nod to Lupin, and started walking across the bay to inspect the goods they had stowed away, beckoning for Chamberlain to follow.

"Sounds ok to me, Africa. Arsene is actually off into town if you needed the company, though I can surely understand if you need a break from the Reyne and co. for a while. I myself will likely be headed back here straight after we get paid. We won't be leaving without you, you can count on it." He gave a smile of sincere thanks - it was almost the closing of a chapter, the end of the crew's first real journey together, and he was genuinely pleased with the way things had gone. It was an odd bunch, a truly ragtag group of 'colleagues' that the Reyne had drawn together, but Eli couldn't picture it any other way.

"Right. Monte?" He started across the Monte, beckoning to both he and Carrie, offering the drivers position up to whoever was keen. The mule was loaded up with the goods and they had their rendezvous. Now to see how interesting this little rock can be.

"What do you do for a living, Clarence?"
Clarence thought for a moment before making his answer. " Work for my father overseeing his many farms. My father, Clarence Edwards Sr. is the largest land owner in this area." Red was creeping into his cheeks. He tried to hide his discomfort of discussing his wealth. " He has four distinct commercial farms and I am helping broker a smaller farm to add to our holdings. While he built it up I have taken on much of the reigns of the family business."

With a nod, Monte swung into the driver's seat and gunned the mule into drive, pulling it out of the cargo pod and rolling out onto terra firma. Collecting those who were going along, he realized that everyone had somewhere to go.

"Best we make sure the boat is all locked up, boss. Doesn't look like anyone is staying behind to mind shop. You got directions to where we need to go?"
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me

Just prior to the skies lighting up with shooting stars a man, Kenji Akechi, walks into the Rooster Saloon taking in the environment getting the feel of the place before sitting down at the bar. A haze of smoke floated stagnant in the air despite all the open windows and the lack of a door. Farmhands and shadier folk packed the saloon. Men played cards and games of chance spouting curses and laughing boisterously in their drunken haze.

The meteor shower didn't faze the patrons of the saloon as it had the patrons of the hotel and those who did notice just drank with even more vigor. Kanji was here for a reason. He had a man to find and this town was the final destination on that journey.

"Hey there! Are you goin' to order or are you goin' sit there wastin' space on my stool!? The bartender stood six foot even with black hair and a face that must never have held a smile. His eyes seemed dead from many years of prolonged drug use yet he exuded an strength that said 'you had better not mess with me'.

"Righto. Anyone who needs a lift into town, now's the chance." Eli sat up beside Monte, double checking everything was where it was meant to be, specifically the piece at his hip, and gave a nod.

"Oh, we'll be locking her up real tight." He gave a wayward glance towards Lupin, jokingly. "Arsenes a fine man, don't get me wrong, but we got lucky. No more surprise visitors, thank you." The Captain then fell silent as the crew buckled up and head off into the night, aimed for town. His mind was on the job now, the idea that he had pulled together a crew and was about to get them all paid. It made him feel good, in a queasy sort of way. Provided things went smooth, of course.

Heh.. Kenji watched as the debris fell through the atmosphere. Most of it vaporizing before falling to the planet. Just another day... The man said wistfully to the imposing bartender. The stench of stale alcohol exuded from him like a rank perfume. Fitting though as this was the outer rim. He reached into his pocket and fingered his chit. "Oolong and a bourban..." He muttered as he placed the smooth fob on the counter.

His eyes flicked from the window to the other patrons. Noting each one in the room. This place is a cesspool, a shadowy hive of information. He thought rather amused at the fact that his journey had brought him this far out. "I'm also looking for a vessel, It should be arriving shortly if it hasn't already. The Grey Reyne... do you know anything about it? He questioned turning to face the barkeeper. His verdant gaze studying the man's face for any hint of deception.

"I'll be paying for anything you can give me." He offered sliding the fob closer to his interviewee. As his dialogue went on with the bartender he kept his ears open to the boisterous talk coming from the others.

Africa took a seat, eager to see the town. These places had a dark side, one she wanted to get a glimpse of. She sat silently during the ride in prayer, asking to see that which had been hidden from her. OR that she had been hidden from. To see the full way one needed to see all things.

The privacy of her upbringing, the nuns, the sanctuaries of the grandmaster of the martial arts she had studied.

Now she must see more, with her own eyes.

There was excitement. And fear.

She wished she'd brought that last cigarette from that crumpled pack.

Arsene was eager to get moving into town and wondering what kind of folk live out here in the sticks. Thoughts of dueling banjos playing crossed his mind but he shrugged off the obviously inappropriate stereotype as he hopped onto the mule. After hearing the remarks pointed towards him he joked back, ”Don’t worry, I’ll point out all the good hiding spots when we get back.” He sat as he watched the scenery roll by deliberating what he should do. Getting a drink would be a good start, and then maybe see about playing a hand of cards. And if there was time maybe trying to get a couple of drinks for free while he was at it.

The bartender winced at the newcomer. "You ain't talkin' about the schoolhouse shipment? Don't know the name of the ship but that's the only ship been inbound since the pretty bird got dropped off." The big man never cracked a smile and stated in the most serious of tones, "You better not mean that shipment harm. That's for the children." He slapped a large hand down on the payment turned to make Kenji's drink order and roughly dropped the drink in front of him. "As for when the ship arrives it should be here anytime."

As Kenji listened to the crowd most of it was drunken nothingness. Six stone faced men at a table near the door talked soberly and too quietly to be heard. This made them stick out against the throng of rowdy revelers. Something just set alarms off.

"You better not mean that shipment harm. That's for the children. As for when the ship arrives it should be here anytime."

Kenji couldn't help but chuckle at the insinuation that he was after the shipment. The sound floated throatily from his parted lips. "I've no interest in a shipment of crayons and glue-sticks old man." He admitted his tone a little condescending. "I'm after something that makes a man." the off-worlder thought to himself, not paying any mind to the bartender who turned to make his drinks. His thoughts were elsewhere, on the inky black, vague scenes and names that he couldn't place. He salivated at the thought of knowing what it all meant.

Subconsciously Kenji slipped his hand into his pocket, deftly pulling out a worn piece of paper. Coordinates were scrawled hastily at the top, then at the bottom were two names. Written in flawless penmanship, The one he was focused on finding was the Grey Reyne, find that and he is led to the other on the list. His head throbbed as he focused on the name, memories of a time long ago, Sounded a song of familiarity in his head, fighting viciously with oblivion. Either way he would find out.

Carefully folding up the paper he stuck it in his breast pocket. His eyes once again scanning the wreckage falling from the heavens. Wondrous hues of color fell as the metals ignited in the atmosphere, like a meteor storm of fireworks all the way to the horizon.

Kenji's attention then turned to a quiet table of men nearby. The noise of the saloon by far drowned out the noise of that lone table. The spoke in hushed voices like conspirators in a den of lions. The freelancer couldn't ignore the sinking feeling he had in his chest. "Big Iron" hung heavily at his side, beneath the coat he wore. "looks like I may have some fun before the night is through..." The man mused with a grin, turning back to the bartender.

"That is rather impressive."

Daiyu feigned impressed. She had heard dozens of similar stories throughout her career, and she had learned to appear as interested as if it were the first time she'd ever heard such a fascinating tale.

"So why have you not joined the registry if you wish to employ the services of a companion?" It was a simple enough question; truth of it was that most folks didn't join because they didn't have enough capital to do such. It made sure that whoever the Companions booked with were worth their time. There were, after-all, brothels for the rest.

"If you are registered, or would like to register, I would see no problem." She added, taking a sip from her tea.

The group ran by the outskirts of town quite quickly, the pleasant night air taking Eli away from the mule, and his thoughts, for a few moments. It had been a long time since they'd been planetside, an even longer time since he'd enjoyed himself because of it. The fresh air, that musky smell of dirt and an incoming shower, the way the dark horizons loomed all around them. It was surprisingly calming, and as the group start to slow down a little the Captain lit up another stick of chemicals and cancer, letting it the sensation flow through his body.

For a very, very short time, he was at peace.

The group had arrived, turning onto what was a main street of sorts, and the small vehicle started coming down to a slow hobble as they took in the sights.

"Righto. First stop. Who's jumping off?" Eli turned around, looking over the crew with a giddy look in his eyes - being here, down on the planet, feel so carefree, it made him look like a kid arriving at the carnival. The Captain nodded across to the Saloon and gave Monte a slight nudge in the ribs. The school wasn't far off the main street - maybe on their return trip there'd be time for a cheeky drink or tow.

Clarence blushed again looking like he wanted to sink into the wooden deck floor. "As well off as I am I cannot afford the registry fee. I mean I could but I am saving everything I make to leave and buy land elsewhere." His face fell and a darkness embraced the next words he spoke. "Away from my father and his crimes." The end of his statement was taken away on the wind and he brightened up at it's passing. "Look I am just having a good time enjoying a nice evening with you. The meteors made me bold but I would just like to talk to you if that's alright. See,"He pointed to the street as a mule drove up the road and stopped momentarily. "the world keeps moving on. Please, tell me something of yourself."

"I think I'll wander about a bit." Said Africa. She leapt off the shuttle with a dancer's grace, checked the street and started walking toward the Rooster Saloon. She look around with the country girl in the big city smile on her face.

She stopped outside the tavern and turned back to look at the mule, to see if anyone had followed. Africa waved like she was off to a quiet evening at some core shopping mall.

Carrie sat back, relaxed, letting the wind caress over her as the mule moved into town. As it slowed, she opened her eyes slowly and watched Africa hop off. If she didn't feel duty bound to go with Eli, she'd have hopped off with the girl. Instead, she gave the younger woman a bright smile and a wave. "Catch up with you after the job's done. You got a way to get in touch if you need it?"

Out of the corner of her eye, she noted Eli and his look towards the local watering hole. She hoped that wasn't going to mean a repeat of her first meeting with the captain, but for now, she decided to hope for the best. One or two drinks wouldn't hurt him. Well, unless he was tryin' ol' Cookie's shine... A secretive, lopsided grin grew on her face as she ran a hand through her hair. Absently, she started whistling an old drinking song the old barkeep had been fond of singing both loudly and out of tune.
