A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

(OOC: Sorry for the delay, had to work another couple long shifts this week)

The sudden voice from behind drew a startled shriek out of Carrie. In the same instant, she was turning and reaching for... anything she could put her hands on... to defend herself from the nightmare in her head. Recognition of the face hit her as she was lifting out of the pilots seat and she dropped back down. Then came the relief and with it a very long, very shaken string of swearing.

"Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh ur-tze, go tsao de, Gao yang jong duh goo yang!!!" Carrie rubbed her face with her hands, the visions of Reavers closing in on her fading and being replaced by a completely unknowing and accidentally guilty Arsene. "Lao TYEN yeh.... Don't sneak up on a girl like that, Arsene..."

Inhaling deeply through her nose, she blew the breath out through her lips and put her hands back on the controls and eyes on the scans as something shot away from the derelict ship. Her brow furrowed and she saved the information for Eli's return. Aww go se... Carrie's face went red as she cleared her throat.

"Sorry bout the outburst, Cap... folks. Arsene kinda snuck up on me over here. Bout got himself decked." She glanced over her shoulder and gave the man an apologetic smile and shrugged. "Also, Eli... had an object break away from the ship and fall towards the planet. Wasn't on the scans earlier." Muting the connection on her end she nodded towards the ship as it started to break apart.

"Ever seen anything like that before?"

"Wilco, Carrie. I'll take a look when we're in." The engines of the small shuttle gunned ahead and before they knew it the docking procedures were concluded and Elijah unclasped his helmet with a sigh of relief. The much warmer, welcoming air of the shuttle bay touched his skin and the man smiled. Giving a nod to Africa and a soft pat on the back to Monte as he went by, Eli marched from the shuttle and straight for the bridge, helmet under one arm and space suit still fully on.

Walking in through the now decompressed bridge door the Captain gave a reassuring smile to Arsene and Carrie, as if nothing out of the ordinary had just occurred, and by the time he was leaning over the monitors before the pilots seat he had a simmering stick of white paper protruding from his mouth. Eyes scanning the monitors, Elijah just watched the data for a few moments before speaking, shifting the cigarette from one corner of his mouth to the other.

"Hmph. She might be just buckling, getting to close to the hot place." Then again... the thought of them missing something, specifically someone, on board that wreckage wasn't one he really planned to dwell on. The short ordeal had been tense enough. He stood up straight then, placing the helmet on the co-pilots seat, and took a short drag as he turned around. Africa had just entered and he stared at the woman for a few moments. Those eyes.

"You look like you could use one." He offered the crumpled pack of cigarettes to her before turning his attention to Carrie and Arsene. The Captain leaned up against the back of the co-pilots chair, everything churning over in his mind as he took a few seconds to relax.

"Right, then. Best track that thing down, either way. Whether she's important or not, probably worth noting where it hits. If it hits." His eyes moved to Lupin. "So, we miss anything?"

Africa double checked seals as they re-entered Reyne, part of her status, as she understood it; her job and junior mech. She only then undid the her own helmut and sat it aside. The quiet of the black, the empty of the ship.

It struck a somber mood for her. Reflective, she looked at the others for a clue. How did they, how would they react and deal with this? They were moved by the experience as she had been. Would they brush it off with false indifference?

Monte twisted his helmet off and stood for a moment, a deep sigh escaping his chest as he relaxed from their venture into the derelict. He glanced sideways at Africa and realized she was feeling it more than he.

"You felt it to? That inescapable dread? Yeah. I've been there before. Wasn't the best of times then, and I was not sure of the hopelessness this time. Torn between wanting to find out for sure, and fear of what we might have found. "

He tucked his helmet under one arm and stepped to the locker to un-suit.

"Best we find out what's next."
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me

Africa found a crumpled pack of cigarettes in her hand. The easy nicotine fix. That wonder of drugs. She fumbled one out of the pack and stuck the slightly bent cig in her mouth. The small welding torch had a lighter.

She lit up the cigarette and took a medium sized breath.

The nicotine spread through her system,, her brain, the chemicals making their thousands of little connections. She savored the moment, the new experience.

"interesting.."
There was something about more than the chemicals.. It was this common experience..

Noticing the panic he inadvertently prompted, Lupin held his hands up as if surrendering. He chuckled a little with a sense of unease after hearing the long string of profanities. “Sorry”, he chimed hopefully loud enough to be heard over the comm. With her invite he peered to watch the ship. The site of it made him anxious. “Can’t say I have.” He replied as he began to look away. “Sorry, I’ve never been much for space travel.”

He watched the captain as he walked in and smiled a bit when asked about the previous events, “No sir, you didn’t miss a thing except where I about got clobbered with whatever Carrie has over there.” He looked over the others as they came in. “You all look like you been through hell.”

The Bradford Hotel was busy for what normally passes as an off night. The guest of honor though that hadn't been her intention was drawing a crowd of people trying to not look like they were looking. Xiang Daiyu sat on a chair of the boardwalk style porch of the hotel that sat on the dusty main street that cut the small town in two. She had been stuck in the place after her last travel arraignment called to cancel abruptly. Work had brought her here and she was anxious to leave, or at least have a way to leave if she needed to.

The waiter came out of the front door with the drink she ordered and noted the crowd. She gave Daiyu a smile and said, "Forgive them. We don't get Registered Companions here....well ever. You're kind of a celebrity."

A smile quickly took her features as she had turned to face the waiter. Looky-loo's and distant admirers had become something she had grown used to. They existed no matter where she went, and it was all apart of the job, really. Sure, on some of the more civilized world's there were a great deal less of them; but there were also those that could not afford a companion, the one's who instead admired from the distance.

She couldn't even remember how she had wound up on Athens. It was about as far from the home and comfort that she knew as there could be. "It's quite alright...I'm used to it, honestly." She replied, giving a polite little bow of her head. "I apologize for causing such a scene." Best be polite, considering she didn't know just how long she would be stuck on this rock.

It was funny, really. You wouldn't figure someone would up and ditch a companion on some back-water moon in, but Daiyu hadn't exactly gotten on with the Captain to begin with. For all she knew they'd run afoul the local sheriff and were forced to flee. Whatever the reason, she was stranded and woefully short on prospective rides off this little world. There were few clients to be had here, and even fewer she was willing to do business with. Despite the hardships, Daiyu kept her pleasant facade up well enough. Smile still gracing her features as she turned to the side at the gathered onlookers, a single hand raising to give a polite little wave to them before it returned to her lap.

"May I have a glass of tea? I fear I'll be staying here for sometime." She admitted with a little sigh. For now she had enough money to afford her stay, but soon she would have to take a client. The Hotel Owner seemed a logical enough choice in that regard, what, with having such a fine establishment.

The Captain gave a nod to Lupin and then looked to Carrie for a few moments, deep in thought. He was still processing everything. Finally Eli started unzipping his suit.

"Right. Carrie, set us for landing. I'll go jump out of this and be back in time for the show." He hadn't forgotten - it was the First Mate's time to land the Reyne now and Eli didn't have a worry in the world. Carrie was more than capable and it seemed it wasn't just engines that spoke to her. Having a spare pair of capable, ship bearing hands on board was a big plus, too.

"We'll be hitting town within the hour. Once we make landfall, I'll meet anyone who wants to take a walk down in the cargo bay." He departed then before anything else could be said. Crossing the small shuttle bay quickly, Eli entered his quarters and closed the door behind, stripping from the space suit with a sigh of relief, and then grabbed a fresh shirt from his locker. Best to be looking shiny clean for our customers.

Refreshed, Elijah headed back to the bridge to oversee the landing, a heavy handgun now strapped casually to his thigh, and spoke quietly to himself. "Today's the day."

Africa observed how the Captain smoked, and then much before the cigarette was finished, she disposed of hers in a similar manner. After getting out of her own Vacc Suit he inspected all those worn, cleaned and serviced them before returning them to their lockers.

She kept the crumpled pack of cigarettes. After all there were two left. Who know when she might want another.

The Captain seemed excited, Africa went to change to planet-side clothing.

Monte grunted and made his way to the locker, stripping off the vacc suit and replacing the torch and prybar. The tool kit went last back into its shelf before he sauntered back to his cabin.

Planetfall. That's a good sign. Better to land than crash, I always say.

He took a long stretch, getting the kinks out of his limbs from being bundled up in that stinky pressure suit. Then he bent over the small sink and splashed water on his face, feeling the refreshing sting. After drying off, he glanced around the cabin, analyzing the various items that he might want to carry on this excursion.

Finally settling on his brace of shoulder holsters, a leather vest over them and a pork-pie hat adorning his head. He popped his suspenders and smiled at his reflection in the mirror.

"Sharp as ever and ready for Glory."

He exited the room and made his way back up to the bridge.

The Bradford Hotel

The crowd suddenly grew silent as a meteor shower flashed brilliantly in the sky. People murmured and some prayed. Many went home to be with their families. The waitress backed into the hotel and emerged with a hastily prepared tea wordlessly dropping it in front of Daiyu. She stared into the sky as the lights began to stop streaking past.

There was still a little bit of a chill that Carrie couldn't shake. Even with the thrill and pride of piloting the Reyne kicking back in as Eli gave her the go ahead to take them planetside. While the others were all off changing, she sent down word to the docks to get landing clearance. Once they were on the ground, she figured she might have time to make a quick change of clothes.

As they broke atmo, she gave the falling ship one last glance as it broke apart and began to streak across the skies. "Probably puttin on quite a show..." Then she turned her slightly nervous focus to the entry and landing. Despite feeling as if it was far more shaky than any she'd ever personally experienced, they were touched down before she knew it. Breathing a silent sigh of relief, she loosened her grip on the controls and sat back.

"Now, get this girl shut down and coolin for a break and get a cleaner, nicer set of digs on..." One hand ran through her hair and she was glad she'd taken the time to shower earlier. It would save her a little time changing as she wasn't looking at cleaning off engine grease. For a second, she felt a little weird knowing she wasn't going to have to do that. And then came a shy, proud smile that inched its way towards a lopsided grin.

Elijah entered the bridge moments after the ship shook ever so quietly - landfall - and gave Carrie a smile and a casual pat on the shoulder as she rose from her seat.

"All good?" he didn't need an answer; the goofy grin on her face, one that he'd learned over their previous few months, was all the answer he needed. The Captain smiled back, turning to the side to let her pass.

"Best make it quick - the changin', that is. Want you and Monte with me when we make for town." At that, Eli readjusted the weapon by his side, brushed down his crisp new shirt, and did a finally once-over of the controls to make sure everything was fine and dandy. It'd been a long run since they'd been planetside. Hopefully, he thought, a smooth deal will give us a bit of downtime here. He wasn't counting on it just yet, though.

"Now, time for some public relations." Eli smiled to himself with those words and then set off through the ship to find Monte.

As Eli stepped out of the bridge, Monte came out of the stairwell, adjusting his vest as it got caught on one of his automatic's trigger guard.

"Ready when you are, boss. Best be sure we lock up good when we leave. Leave no opportunity for more rowdies getting on board. "

He smiled at his attempt to take on a rougher attitude than his normal easy going appearance.

Eli gave a grin as he looked up from his sidearm, shaking his head at Monte as the pair met up and started on their way down. Carrie would meet them in the cargo bay once she was set to go - the Captain couldn't go rushing her after such a neat landing - so the men had a few minutes to lay out the plan and double check their bases were covered.

"Don't worry... 'nough stowaways to last me a while anyway. Don't let you-know-who hear ya." He gave an unprofessional grin, leading the way back down stairs towards the cargo bay. The Captain had figured, with the three of them busy on business, their newest arrival and Africa would have some time to get to know each other planetside. Truth was that there wasn't likely much to occupy oneself with in the tiny town they'd touched down in. That was probably the point of picking such a location. That being said, a quiet drink amongst strangers and a stretch of ones legs was always a good change after a long trip.

"And we're all good for this little exchange, then? Did we have a rendezvous location? Figured meeting up with our business associate would be preferable before we start unloading anything... y'know, get a good lay of the land." He swung around the corner at the bottom of the stairs, heading for the controls by the large cargo bay door and punching a few buttons to open it.

Lupin spent the time breaking atmo inside of his bunk. He figured the best thing he can do was to try and ignore it by keeping himself busy. In this case it was by finding a casual suit of his and a simple tie that matched. It was a simple grey affair one that he personally had a fondness for and was versatile in being relaxed enough for daily wear and stylish enough to look the part for a few short cons if needed.

It was a bit challenging to shave with the ship shaking about but he had dealt with worse both on a rickety bus and on a boat once. Getting away without a nick and with his duds selected all he had to do was fix his hair which he did by simply combing his hair back with a bit of pomade. So now clean shaven he looked and felt like a new man and smiled at his reflection as he thought about the possible reactions he’d get from the others.

Lupin exited out his room and finished up his outfit by placing a deck of cards into his breast pocket and putting on a tie using a 4 in hand knot for that everyman look. He didn’t know what if anything the captain had in mind or even if his welcome was already cut short. So it was going to be best to check in before going planet side. He was in luck as he saw the captain opening the door as he stepped foot into the cargo bay. Hey captain, do you want me to do anything? He asked sincerely as he knew he had something of a debt to pay even after offering to pay his passage after the fact.

Carrie had made the quick trip to her bunk, her mind going over what she ought to wear. Her usual, at which she cast a downward glance, probably wasn't really up to snuff. There was, however, one outfit she wore rarely that might do if they were meeting clients. She wasn't sure about it really, but it was probably the few "nice" bits of clothing she owned. Not that most would call it dressy, like some of those Core World clothes.

Dragging the clothes out from one of her lesser used drawers, she changed quick and then paused long enough to run a brush through her hair. A quick peek in the mirror left her feeling nervous about her choice and she decided to slip on her father's old beat up leather jacket. The faded, worn brown leather seemed to offset the deep blue tank and black jeans. The only thing missing now was her gun. She grabbed it and headed out of the room.

As she headed down to catch up with Eli, she strapped on the gun. For all her nerves, about flying and what she was wearing, Carrie realized she was settling into the role she'd been given better than she'd expected. The crew was blending, which made it easier. Africa had picked up a lot of what Carrie had showed her which left Carrie feeling more and more comfortable leaving the care of the ships engines to the young woman.

Entering the cargo bay, Carrie caught sight of Arsene and couldn't help but let loose a little bit of a low whistle. "Lookin sharp..." She grinned a little, forgetting her own somewhat drastic change of attire and the nerves associated with it.

(OOC: Picture included for reference. Normally, Carrie wears clothing like Ali Larter in Resident Evil, as shown in her bio)

Eli turned from the opening door as the Athens evening met them. It was warm, as had been expected, and the small town in the distance was nothing but a few lights bobbing here and there. Also as had been expected. The Captain took a deep breath of the warm, fresh air and caught sight of Carrie arriving in the bay. They were just about all assembled now and Elijah headed over to meet his First Mate. It wasn't so common that he'd seen her looking quite so... comfortable. Where was all the grease and the engine splutter?

"Carrie... you look nice." A stupid thing to say, clearly, and the look on his face showed it. Idiot. Eli didn't wait for a response then, avoiding any awkward eye contact and quickly walking by, heading over to where Arsene was standing, and gave the newest member of the crew a light clap on the shoulder. It'd been a short trip, at least in traditional terms, but Eli felt he'd gotten to know Mr Lupin well enough. The circumstances of their meeting might have been less than ideal, but a genuine relationship was formed. Or forming. Either way, he had no allusions as to the future, but courtesy was always on hand.

"You thought it all over, I imagine? The Reyne's doors are open to you now, you know it." A friendly smile. Then, "Though, on the odd chance this isn't the home for you, still got me one little favour to ask before anything is done or said." The Captain lowered his voice a little, turning his back to the rest of the crew as they assembled around the cargo door.

(OOC: Sorry if I'm wrong, but I just recall a comment about it being a night time arrival)

Monte stepped out of the Reyne into the cool night air. He looked up and watched the sky. The breeze blew the forelock of hair on his head back and forth across his forehead. He felt a single sting of water hit his cheek and turned back to the others.

"Feels like it might rain soon. We should get moving."

He thumbed toward the back cargo hatch while walking up to the captain and first mate.

"Do we want to take the mule to town?"
