A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

"Hrmph." That was the responsible Harmon gave as he stood idle, watching on as Monte started his way into the bridge. The Captain glanced around, taking in every detail of the walls and the hall and the roof as the twin lights on his helmet illuminated every spec of dust. Africa moved by him, taking the rear duty, and he eyed the slow burning door with a sinking feeling. He'd be going in first, regardless of what happened when the hatch finally broke free. Only seemed fair.

"Jesus... sure could use a smoke." He didn't really mean to say the it, the words just slipping out in a far out of place moment of awkwardness. He stared wide eye for a moment at Africa, then turned away, watching Monte work, as if he'd meant it as a joke. Breaking the ice. Or something like that.

The toy made a squeak but little else. As the door freed itself from it's lock it slid open. The bridge was empty. A lone body sat at a console slumped over having apparently taken his own life. The .32 pistol still clutched in a death grip. There was no sign of the rest of the crew.

Monte stepped aside to let the Captain enter first. With only one body in evidence, it didn't seem to be an issue. He snapped the torch back into its cradle and picked up the long pry bar again.

"Whatever he was running from, it didn't get him."

He looked back over his shoulder at the hallway they had just come through.

"Should we check the engineering?"

Elijah entered slowly, hands freely before him as if to counter some impending attack, the spotlights from his helmet sending beams into the dark bridge. Through the windscreen glass Eli could see the Reyne hovering beside them, a comforting hulk in the large expanse of nothing.

He took a few steps forward, feeling the presence of Monte as he followed, and surveyed the damage. It was clear this man was long dead, victim to his own weapon. Elijah stepped even closed, once suited hand reaching up to slightly examine the corpse.
Monte

"Whatever he was running from, it didn't get him."
Eli looked up at him, avoiding his lights flashing the man in the face directly.

"Didn't it?" The Captain let out a long sigh, brushing off the shiver that ran up his spine, and turned away from the body. There were no other clues here as to what happened, not power to search through the ships logs. It was as if the crew had just banished, foul ghosts wandering the halls driving this one man insane. Elijah just shook his head.

"Engineering sounds good. Best find out if this girl broke down or was put down." He already knew the answer - it wasn't every day a ship lost its power and a lone survivor barricading himself long enough to eat his gun.

Africa crept back a little, tried to listen through the headset for sound of life from the ship. Not just human life, ship's function life.

A couple steps back, she squatted and took the toy, gave it a look and dropped it into the netted storage bag on the side of her vac suit.

"God rest all their souls, God forgive them that did this, and bless those that suffered this."

Horror. Violence. She wanted out of the Vacc Suit, to smell its true essensce. Let it pour into her pores, let the experience be complete, not just some casual observations. Then a slight sickness in her throat at the thought of wanting to feel the scent of that experience. Chamberlain felt the divisions in her psyche: to seek and learn and feel; and to find the calm, fall into the peace. Look away.

Peoples lives had ended in a very bad way. Their ghosts would be hurting, salvation hopefully was there's. If not... how horrible. This ship was no longer a place for the living.

"I think we should go back to our ship."

The Captain looked up at her words and stayed silent for a few moments. He'd never been a holy man, never understood those who were, but his beef wasn't with God or the Gods or whatever it might be that was above. It always perplexed him, though, when folk turned to an almighty being in these situations - to Eli, it was these situations that assured him there wasn't some kind of divine being ready to intervene when the going got tough.

"Maybe head back to the shuttle. We'll follow soon enough." His words were soft, empathetic, and he looked to Monte for agreement - the Captain definitely wanted to investigate the boats engines, but he wasn't about to wander off alone. Since they'd only traveled down a main hall, escorting Africa back to the shuttle first wouldn't take them too long. The clock was ticking, though, and the less time they spent on board the derelict, the better.

"Carrie, any sign of engineering from where you're sitting? We want to figure out why she's dead."

Monte nodded inside his helmet. "I've got your back, Cap'n. We can escort Africa back and then see what the engineering has to show. Don't expect much more detail, though."

He tugged the strap tighter to keep the plasma torch from swinging loose. His thoughts about gods and territories outside normal ken, was limited to what he had learned from studies and discovery. Sure, there were those who worshiped things unseen, but Monte hadn't seen anything that couldn't be explained by physics or mental derangement.

"I don't require an escort Captain. I suggest we all return. Until then, I would prefer to remain with you." There was no indigination in Africa clarifying the misunderstanding that she alone wanted to flee.

It was for all of them she felt dread. Danger. It was not intuition. It was the dead ship falling to its destruction. Perhaps there was still a chance for a survivor. The Captain was right. They should look.

"I'll check the rooms as we go." she offered. At least she could offer a blessing to more of the dead. Which seemed likely given the size of the ship. 'living please' she prayed.

and there was a sense then, ... yes... perhaps there was.... an intuition...

The Captain eyed Chamberlain carefully before nodding, walking back through the doorway from the bridge and out into the shadowy hall. The presence of the Reyne floating nearby was then gone from his vision and another shiver assaulted his spine. Eli shook it off, though, and started wandering slowly down the hall looking for a sign of where engineering might be until Carrie responded.

The continued scans, each one taking a closer and closer look, combined with the mention of someone found dead at the controls put Carrie more and more on edge. The scans concerned her more than a life long past saving, though she offered up a silent prayer to the passed soul. She was just about to switch the scans over to the engines when the list of different ship pieces assembled itself in her brain.

Her hands froze and a sharp intake of breath was all she could muster for several long seconds. Screaming would be a bad idea, but the assemblage of the ship floating in front of her was too much to ignore. "Captain, I'm thinking it might be best to head on back. Put down or broke down, this ain't one we wanna answer."

Carrie did her very best to keep her voice steady and calm, but there was no mistaking the urgency. "Would be best if your exit was quick and quiet." Only once she'd spoken did she focus the scans a little closer on the engines. Silently, she hoped she was wrong, but her gut was chilled so deeply cold. And her gut rarely led her wrong. First time for everything. Here's hoping this is the first...

The ship shuttered violently as the planet loomed ever closer.

"Gorram it." Eli grabbed the wall with one hand as the ship groaned around them. There was still a solid gap between them and the atmosphere of the planet, but the effects were already trying to show. Given the fact that it wasn't entirely a safe environment when they boarded, the torn apart vessel wasn't about to start getting safer. The Captain listened the Carrie's transmission, looking around them as she voiced her concerns, and swore under his breath. He stared intently from Chamberlain to Monte, then back, and took a long pause. Finally...

"Alright. Alright. Abandon ship. Let's get back to the Reyne... we've seen enough." Reluctantly Elijah ushered for his crew members to move ahead, taking the rear, as the trio started off down the hall back the way they had come.

Monte relaxed his stance and rolled with the vibration of the ship starting to hit atmo.

"Ok, I'll get a line back to the Reyne."

He lead down the corridor and headed toward the hole that they had come in through.

Africa check the last crew dorm. It was well shut up. "just one more."

They can't leave, "there were more people on board. They have to be somewhere."

She moved her hand to brush some hair behind her ear, but of course the vacc helmut was there. Instead she touched the external comm. "Hello, is anyone in there?"

If there wasn't, well then. Yes. They must go back. They had little time left.
She ordered her fear away, followed her intuition.
Calmed preparation washed over her. A simple prayer, "... please..."

The Captain halted and even with the obscurity of the space suit, it was clear his stance was that of impatience. As Africa hit the internal comms button he checked over one shoulder again and swept the hallway behind them with his flashlights. Then, looking back to the task at hand, Eli exchanged a quick look with Monte and then nodded for their shuttle docked just outside the halls end.

"Come." He clasped a hand down on the should of Chamberlains suit, beckoning her to move along. The entire adventure was starting to eat at his nerves now.

Monte climbed out of the hole and stood outside, magnetic boots holding him firm to the ship's side while he scanned the mismatched structure of seemingly unassociated ship parts. It was a pilot's nightmare of complexity; odd angles instead of smooth lines. There was always something beautiful and utilitarian about most ship designs.

This was anything but.

Almost as if ships had crashed and melted into one another.

That chill ran down his spine again. Memories of St. Alban creeped back into mind. Scenes of crazed men with disfigured faces, pieces of metal jagged and torn into their skin. The screams of the innocent.

He shook off the memory and turned to look up into the shuttle's airlock, bending at the legs and in one motion, releasing the mags and leaping up...

"Come."
The Captain beckoned.

The room was empty. Empty of people. Empty of survivors.

Africa moved gracefully away and joined the others.

"Where did they go?" Did they leave by shuttle? Why was one left on the bridge? And in such a state that he took his own life. Africa stroked the tiny stuffed dog, she gave it a squeeze; the vacuum of space had torn the built in squeaker in a little silent explosion in side the tiny toy; even if there had been air to make it squeak, it would be forever silent now.

Africa followed Monte away from the ship that dropped quietly to it's death. Silent too, for now. But it would fall to a firery soundful display very likely to boom across the planet below.

Just a little stuffed dog, now without its voice, to carry the connections of the lives and souls of the ship forever forward. Forever silent. not forgotten since none even now remembered.

and so it goes.

The short exodus occurred as quickly as their arrival had, Elijah taking the leap of faith from the wreckage to their shuttle last. Monte had already landed his boots at the other end, the shuttle doors open, and helped Africa and then Eli into the small vehicle. The return journey was just a blur.

"Recon party coming home, Carrie. Get her read to move." He'd had enough of the situation as a whole, the uncertainty and the grim findings. While the beckoning endlessness of space was always bound to throw surprises at those who traveled across it, stumbling upon bodies and chaos on his maiden voyage wasn't what the Captain had signed up for. She shivered a little as his gloved hands landed on the controls. Looking back for some kind of confirmation that the shuttle doors were now closed, he started their approach back to the Reyne, curving in and out of the rubble that surrounded them.

The entire trip his eyes ignored the looming planet and what it meant for the hopefully soulless ship they were departing.

Lupin had been acquainting himself with the ship by wondering its empty corridors and passages as he tried to keep himself occupied and out of the way as the others worked. It was one of those habits he had to familiarize himself of his surroundings incase needing to bail out of bad jam. However, his lack of time shipside wasn’t doing him any favors for him. There were a couple of times where he ran into minor orientation issues as the artificial gravity played havoc on his balance. It wasn’t much of a problem but a damned nuisance none the less; one which he hoped would go away as he got settled in. After having regained his composure he found himself near the bridge and decided to check in. Oblivious to the situation off ship he walked into the bridge rather quietly and overheard the comm as the captain announced his return. Feeling concerned and frankly rather useless at the moment he spoke up and asked, “Everything OK?”

All they could do was watch as the ship shook itself apart and began to burn up. Large chunks of the patchwork vessel were breaking off. It would be a spectacular show for the people below. A large cylindrical object not on the scans before shot downward into atmo first silently then screaming through the air.

Coopersville would be on the night side of Athens at roughly ten o'clock pm destination time.
