A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

Eli listened to the words of his crew members, weighed each of them carefully, but he knew a decision had already been made. He rose from the seat, having locked the Reyne into a solitary position near the wreckage, and turned to face Carrie.

"I understand, really. I'd rather have you here, though, ready at a moment's notice." He gestured out the window to the wreckage that was now very, very close to their position. "Ship holed up like that... I'm no expert, but I don't imagine getting the engine going would help none. Even if we did, with that many hull breaches I doubt she'd ever make atmo without frying them inside." He gave a short smile to Carrie and tapped her on the shoulder as he made for the shuttle bay.

"Africa and Monte with me. We'll aim for a half hour turn around, suiting up and re-docking with the Reyne included." It was true what he'd said, or at least he assumed it to be. There was almost no hope for anyone still on board, nor was the vessel in any shape to be firing up and hitting the firey atmosphere of the nearby planet. The best they could do was get anyone still on board to safety and clear out anything of great value. That thought gave him an odd feeling as he began to suit up - were they scavengers, now? The next half hour would tell.

As Africa suited up, "It's a rescue operation though first right Captain?"

She understood the prospect of salvage but she'd be undone if rescue didn't take priority. After finishing donning her own suit Africa gave Monte and the Captain's suit a quick check per SOP. Then a pressure check of her own.

"Ready." She said, her voice hinting at the excitement of the operation.

Monte took a moment to browse through the gear stashed in the shuttle and found a portable plasma torch, pry bar and electrical engineer's tool box. He smiled at Africa as she entered and settled, and then Eli as their captain took the pilot's seat. "All set, here, boss."

Carrie returned Eli's smile and felt the smile grow larger at his willingness and confidence in leaving the Reyne under her control. She nodded a half nod and looked back to the controls. As satisfying as it was to have the captain's confidence, it was still a very, very strange feeling to be sitting out on a venture like this one. Now alone on the flight deck, Carrie ventured a glance over her shoulder and out the door.

Looking back to the floating wreckage, she sighed softly. For some reason, she felt a bit uneasy and she keyed up the comm. "Take it easy over there. Doubt I could pull off anything fancy in the way of a rescue, so here's hopin' it ain't needed. Still, keep the comm open. This boat'll be bout as quiet as the other is with no one here."

Eli gave a solemn nod and before he knew it the three of them were suited up and rearing to go. Locking Carrie into the bridge, at least temporarily, the small shuttle bay hissed shut and decompression began as Eli led the way up into the short range shuttle that they had barely touched since leaving the Baroness so many months before. He keyed the console screen on his forearm, opening up the suits comm system permanently.

"Roger that Carrie." Then to his companions who were wandering up into the shuttle behind him, "You two good to go?" The small shuttle boasted a single compartment with enough room for half a dozen people to sit quite comfortably. It was cold and sterile, though, and the seating was mostly made up of two cushioned benches that ran along the outer wall. Two seats stood at the front where the glass shield showed the hissing decompression of the shuttle bay outside.

The Captain keyed in the ignition sequence for the little shuttle and prepared to take off, turning from his seat at the controls to double check Monte and Africa were both good to roll out. With a thumbs up and a nod of his own, the shuttle door sealed firmly shut, Eli started to Maurene the small shuttle upwards as the ceiling doors opened. Beyond was the nothingness of the Black and only for a moment did his heart skip a beat.

"Reyne actual, we've cleared the doors and are headed for the wreckage. See if you can't bring up some schematics or the like - something you can send across that might help us find a place to dock."

"Yes." she replied. "Good to go." A bit more serious fell in to her. This could be a very unpleasant adventure. People were likely dead.

Africa strapped in one of the bench seats and went through her tools, a little sorting. A couple all purpose spanners, utility knife, the welding kit, some acidic goo 'just in case', and a good old fashioned crow bar. A few other items, including a rudimentary first aid kit.

As the Captain spoke, Africa looked out the front screen.

The Hulk loomed larger as the shuttle moved closer. The model was hard to place between the damage and what looked like pieces parts from various other ships. A transport hull here, a Firefly there, scavenged parts to make one ugly whole. Debris peppered the shuttle as it clung to the inertia of the dead ship.

Carrie's scan showed that the hulks bay had blown open and the "safest" place to infiltrate was a hole directly to the left on the actual bay. Once in the hole the next corridors door could be pried and once shut again the corridor would become air tight and act as an airlock to what little of the ship that still had air.

Monte pulled down his helmet and gave it a quarter twist, hearing the locks snap secure. A quick check of the pressure gage in the left lower corner of his suit, just inside the faceplate on his headpiece and he could see the suit was sealed and good to go. He patted the top of his helmet, activating the twin headlights and turned toward the shuttle's airlock.

With the shoulder strap of the plasma torch over his left shoulder, the pry bar in his left hand and the tool kit secured to his right thigh, he passed through the airlock and stepped out into space. Kicking off the edge of the shuttle's side, he drifted the short distance to the other ship, landing with his feet forward a few meters from the hole.

The hairs on the back of his neck tickled. There was something oddly wrong about this ship. Something....

Africa followed Monty across the vacuum of space and stopped on the other side of the hole.
She waited for the Captain's approach assuming he would take the lead. Chamberlain checked radioactive readings.to be sure they would not be walking in on anything deadly.

After a quick check of her equipment to be sure everything was still secure she gave a thumbs up.

Eli had taken a long, deep breath as he brought the shuttle into the shadow of the hulking, dead ship. Spinning her around so that the main airlock would line up with the hole that had been torn in the ship's hull, the Captain clicked the vessel into auto with jittery hands and set her to stay hovering just over the entry wound. He then unclipped from the pilot's seat, helmet now firmly locked in place, and watched as the back of the shuttle opened up to reveal the nothingness beyond.

It was a very short distance across to the hole that had pierced through the hull of the large vessel, yet the chasm seemed a mile long from where he was standing. Monty led the way, though, and Africa was quick to follow. Eli swore under his breath, forgetting that the comms system was voice activated, and gave a nod to his two crew members before launching out himself. A moment later his hands clasped the worn hull breach of the large ship and he pulled himself inside, the lights on his helmet activating.

"Right." His words clicked in and out with a little bit of static, echoing around the helmets of his comrades and the silent bridge of the Reyne. "Nice and steady, let's set a good pace. Best try to get somewhere pressurised." He stopped to think for a moment, finding his feet inside the wreckage and taking in his surroundings. "Then probably hit the bridge, if nothing else grabs our attention. Remember the clock's ticking." He started forward, gesturing for Monty to lead the way, and then circled his vision around the inside of the vessel to see just what they had floated into.

"Reyne, report in. How's it look from your end?"

Monte managed to get the door open as what little air expelled out into space from the hallway. As the door shut behind them there wasn't any oxygen to replace what was lost but the hallway did pressurize and the next doors lock switched from red to green. Inside was a cafeteria that could have sat thirty personnel at a time. Abandoned now with meals still left uneaten. The emergency lights shone dimly everywhere. No one was to seen.

Having bypassed the cargo bay proper they were about one 100 meters from the bridge and one level below.

The scans gave Carrie pause and had her frowning. She looked on as the shuttle approached and when Eli's voice came across, she let out a short sigh through her nose. "No change. Bay is blown, but the corridors on the left side show intact."

She read over the scans again. There was an eerie feeling she just couldn't shake. "Looks like you might be able to get inside there and once the door is closed, it will stay airtight." She went quiet again. Only for a moment. "I don't like it. Something feels... off. I'll keep scanning."

Carrie keyed up the scan again, trying to refine the details of the results as much as she could. She also started a scan of the space around them. The eerie feeling finally had a name: eyes. It felt like they were being watched.

Monte shifted the long pry bar in his hand as they moved down the hallway. He scanned left and right as they moved along. "Good thing the artificial grav is still working. I'd hate to have to float through this hulk."

He pointed at the stairwell leading upward.

"Roger that." Eli nodded as he gave the confirmation, despite having no view of Carrie, nor the Reyne itself, anymore. They had ducked into a hall, clearing the area around them visibly and then, convinced that there was nothing hazardous in their way, the Captain sealed off the doorway behind them. They'd all had a good enough skim over the wreckage and the blueprints before boarding to have an idea of where they were headed.

"Bridge." Elijah's static riddled voice crackled into the ears of the others as Monte led the way - it was more of an agreement than a command, as they were already headed that way. For some reason the Captain just couldn't shake the feeling of dread he'd had during the little expedition, caution keep his voice almost a whisper and his words to a minimum. Sticking together was the best idea, even when they did have some clue as to what happened here. So far it all looked hostile to him - something, most likely external, had torn this boat apart and left the wreckage to burn.

During the war days he'd seen a lot of vessels go down, large and small, but he'd never been amongst the wreckage like this. The spotlights from his and the others' helmets shone slim beams down the hall and all around as they surveyed their surroundings. Cramped, dark, cold and deadly silent, the hall was far more funereal than the Captain wanted to admit to himself.

He kept moving, following the others, unable to shake the instinctual glance over his shoulder every few steps.

Africa reminded them, "Keep your suit seal, oxygen is low."

And she followed along. Monte's point about the grav, she followed. "Grav could go out or get .... hinkey. with all this debris;" she nodded a bit at Monte. That would be dangerous.

She followed in the rear. Captain's well experienced eyes front. Monte seemed one to react accordingly as to anything they found. Africa, she figured to ... just try and not let the entire scene overwhelm her. Chamberlain kept her breathing proper and focuses, let the scene unfold, observe and analyze.

Letting the emotional aspect of the suffering that had taken place here...
which led to the obvious question. Now they had been here, now they were...

"Where is the crew?"

"Where are the bodies..." Monte moved up the stairwell to the hatch at the top, and tested it before opening. "Good chance they are in the bridge area, if no where else. If this was an attack, they would have clustered together for security and safety against boarders."

Africa kept a full look back, one hand forward touching Monte's back to keep steady. She wished they could get out of the suits, so she could hear for real, smell for real. feel for real. The vacc suit didn't relay the exactness of what was out there.

Senses shut off, she relied on the data from the suit. I just meant no one there.
but someone had been, she'd be able to feel... something...

Of course not for long, the O2 wouldn't keep her alive even with her controlled breathing skills.

"Deliver them lord, let them be safe and well. Allow us to take them home to Gray Reyne."

Debris of a fast exodus littered the hallways and stairwells. Miscellaneous clothes and supplies scattered here and there in a hurried state of abandon. The door to the bridge was hard sealed with a stuffed dog silently standing watch.

Monte tapped the stuffed animal with the toe of one boot.

"Children were here. Guarding the last bastion. Maybe still alive, maybe afraid of what might be coming for them."

He brought the plasma torch into action and attacked the edge of the hatch.

Africa offered a warning, something she'd read about booby traps and tricks of pirates; more so Reavers, if you believed in that sort of thing.

"Wait" she said, but Monte had already toed the stuffed animal.

Then moved back to the rear, just to make sure they had no one behind them. Or now that the thought of Reavers was in her head, nothing behind them.

The fear fought for tearing her nerves, she took a settling breath, 'fear is the mind killer', and tucked panic away in a corner. Calm, prepared, observe.
