The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft. In orbit of Londinium Two months after the fall The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew. |

With a cold mug of brew in one hand and an old, dog eared book under his arm, Eli watched on from above with interest as the pair below started throwing things around. Since they'd checked over the crates and got them properly stowed, the ship had become all warm and fuzzy and the Captain had relaxed a little. S'long as nothing breaks and there were no hiccups, it was nothing but a quiet trip ahead of them. It was his third month of people a Captain, of frequenting a ship and all, and he had already learned that quiet was the way he liked it. He'd been watching over Africa for a while, more than intrigued by her as a character. The small crew he had on the Reyne had seemingly come together at random - fate, someone had called it over the last few months. He wasn't a big subscriber to faith or fate or spirituality, but the collection of souls on his boat more or less kept him wondering. Africa, specifically, was proving to be a great counterweight to his own demeanour. So far the Captain had mostly managed to save face, though it was hard for folk not to get to know you on a small boat such as theirs. His darker moments were kept for solitude, though, and walking the halls to bump into Chamberlains glowing face was something he was still getting used to. How's one person so damn content all the time? She and Carrie were looking more alike by the day - similar faces, different paths. "Don't you go breaking anything down there." The warning was barely loaded - what could they possibly break in an almost empty bay, anyway? He dogged a smile and turned, heading off for the kitchen. The crew mostly took morning meals together, though informally, and dinner was an agreed upon tradition each 'night'. Anything in between, though, was every man (and woman) for themselves. Something sweet, he thought in advance, a mild grumble echoing through his stomach. |

Lupin did his share of work looking over the crates for any sign of tampering. Far as he could tell everything seemed legit, but then again he only forged ids and the occasional document. He moved towards one of the walls to leave some space out of courtesy as he mostly out of habit put a cigarette between his lips and lit up taking a long drag. As he inhaled the smoke and its relaxing elements he felt calm and relaxed. No more running, a reasonable man in charge and oddly best of all no big secrets or aliases for once in his adult life. He looked around the ship and watched the others playing dodgeball and thought to himselfbthat things couldnt get much better. His moment of serenity was crudely interruted when the sight of a red blur went zooming past. With cigarette clentched beteen his teeth Lupin grinned and picked up the ball that was now rolling past him "I'm gonna get ya for that," he jokingly called out as he threw the red menice back towards where it came going for the knees to give the recepiant a fair chance to catch it. There was little in the way of mechanical work to keep Carrie busy on the Reyne. Both a blessing and a curse for her, but she did find that it left her time to get to know the others on crew as well as pick up a little more about actually piloting the ship. Not that she didn't go to checking things now and again, just out of habit more than need. She'd been doing a little work on cleaning some of her tools, having neglected a few of them and found herself wearing more than a little grease. So, a shower had been in order. Now, she was leaving the kitchen, having found a little something to snack on and heading off to find the rest of the crew. For once, she'd opted for the cleaner pair of jeans and tank top and pulled her hair back into a loose braid. About halfway between the kitchen and the cargo, she spotted Eli and smiled. "I'd ask if it's all quiet down there, but I can hear 'em from the kitchen." |

Eli smiled, no missing a beat, and shook his head as he made for the kitchen doorway. "Yeah. Big, happy family down there. Big, happy, loud family." He'd stopped, turned back to face Carrie, and so leaned up against the doorframe. The mug of cold dregs in his hand flopped limp by his side. "How's every little thing?" He'd learned quickly enough that freshly damp hair meant a certain someone had been getting dirty in the engine room. It was a good thing, he figured - 'least we know folk are doing there job. "She behaving herself?" He tapped one hand gently against the bulkhead as it was more a pet than a vehicle. |

Carrie couldn't help but turn and face Eli, leaning against the wall of the corridor. She spotted the usual mug in his hands and chuckled at that and the comment about the big family. It wasn't hard to see the idea of the crew being a family, and it was honestly nice to hear Eli use the term. His questions drew a grin and faint shaking of her head. He was learning her habits, learning to read her. It was quicker than others. But when she compared it to how quickly they had 'meshed', it really didn't seem odd. "Actually, I wasn't tinkering or checking up on things. I'd left my tools without cleaning them for a day or two. Got a little dirty cleaning them up." |

"Well, that's a relief, I guess." Of course his First Mate would always come to Eli if there was a problem, though he had a difficult time pushing away doubts that something might go wrong. It was still early days for him as far as space life went, his third month in the Black clicking over as they spoke. He expected more chaos, more drama, more life support failures. Maybe it was just those things folk spoke of so much back on Verbena 'cause the normal days on board a boat were boring. He wasn't complaining, though. An easy trip was just up Elijah's alley. "Seems we're all set on course. Shouldn't be too much longer 'fore we hit the destination. Smooth sailin', it would seem." He gave a nod at that, idly staring down at the near empty mug in his hand. Then, "Was thinkin' maybe you'd want to take the wheel, so to speak, on our way down. Break atmo and all. Think you might be interested?" She was still learning, that was sure, but Carrie hadn't come t him as a clean slate - working on ships before had ensured some basic knowledge, and now with his tutoring at the helm she was definitely getting the hang of it. It kept his nerves eased, too, knowing that there was someone else fully capable of taking to the controls if needed. "What d'you say?" |

Monte was distracted by Eli's call down to them, and so missed the ball coming at him. It bounced off his left knee, causing him to stumbled sideways, and the ball retreated back over toward Africa. He caught himself by barrel rolling onto his left side and back onto his knees. Glancing back over at Lupin, he smiled a devilish grin. "You think you have me? Ha! Try again." |

Africa remembered dodge ball from when she was little, mostly getting hit in the face by Johann and being so embarrassed she turned bright red. Fortunately everyone thought that was... because she'd been hit in the face with a ball. She'd had such a crush... and he'd hit her in the face. Her browed arched and she scooped up the ball, bounced it once and took a step toward Monte, aimed and then lightly turned and fired off a much too high but very hard throw at Lupin. She meant it for his ankles, hard to catch; but it was very much too high. |

Carrie had been far from a bad mood, but the mere suggestion that she get to break atmo put a glowing grin on her face that made the usual lopsided smile pale in comparison. She was more than interested, that would be painfully obvious. It also brought on a quiet undertone of nerves that, for the moment, were overshadowed. "Interested?" Even as the word came out, the grin morphed into a nervous look. The only hint giving away that she was forcing the more serious expression were the faint crinkles at the corners of her mouth and eyes and the twinkle in her eyes. "I suppose I could give it an honest go. Go on and fill that empty mug... I see you watching it like it's supposed to get filled magically." Usually me doin the magic, but hey, part of the job, right? Pushing away from the wall, she looked through the corridor in the direction of the cockpit. The grin resurfaced. "Still think you might wanna be up there, ya know... just in case." With an intentional calm and collected manner, Carrie started off. Inside, she was feeling as if she'd just unraveled a major mechanical roadblock with a new engine. Maybe it wasn't, but the same feeling of satisfaction was setting in. Now... I just have to actually do this... With a silent shake of her head, Carrie couldn't help but chuckle at herself. |

Eli gave a mock hurt face at the coffee accusations and then rolled his eyes, glad to hear that she was up to the job. "Oh, don't worry, I'll be up there with you." They couldn't be far from their destination now - an easy trip - and now was as good a time as any to step up his in-house training. It was good, having such an array of skills on board. The small team had a lot of space to grow, all leaning on one another, like brothers in arms. He suddenly felt like a Lieutenant again. He nodded without a word, suppressing thoughts of the old days, the war, and turned to head into the kitchen. Deserted, with the clang of full grown adults running around down stairs echoing through the halls, the Captain took a few moments to steady himself. Propped against the benchtop, his mug clattering to one side, Eli exhaled slowly. His brow was damp and only a few moments after having a laugh with Carrie his head was spinning. Steadying himself, Eli grabbed a mug of water and took a seat at the dining table. The kitchen was spotless, well kept and looked after. The entire ship was. Still sparkling new, more or less, without being sterile. It was a pleasant space. Yet Elijah's mind wouldn't let him relax. Three months had gone by and still the ghosts lingered. He sat there for a long while, hands against the glass topped table, lost deep in his memories. |

Dodge ball had been simple joyous fun. Laughing and playing. Making up rules and breaking them faster than you could catch, slap or kick the red rubber ball. Africa too care to put the ball away, secured by a cargo net yet in plain sight. A pleasant memory, a reminder to play again. Play. After cleaning up she took to a long quiet meditation up in the highest reaches of the catwalk. Connection and piping made the ship sound alive. She wanted to follow the joy of the play with the joy of the calm; and with it, the secret language of Grey Reyne. |

With a little more then an hour left before they hit atmo on Athens the proximity alarm sounded. Another ship drifting along under minimal power came into view. Gapping holes pocked the hull and all engines were off. Left to it's own device the ship will vaporize over Athens skies becoming some superstitious farmers omen to harvest. |

Africa slowly opened her eyes, not instantly aware of the meaning of the alarm. She focused on where she was: Grey Reyne, the black, coming to Athens, the meaning of that particular alarm; and then where she had been: the calm, the floating nether black between all things, the thin silver life line holding to the material world while her soul was held in the arms of the Son of God. Filled with energy and peace and joy she quickly moved to the bridge to discovery the nature of the emergency. After seeing just what it was, she would volunteer. Certified in Vacc Suit, (for welding jobs), and being not required to actually keep the ship going. She had helped Carrie ensure the ship's suits were ready and well serviced, saying at one point, "preparation is the mother of survival." with just a little bit of the playful silly proverbist. For now then, her first contribution, "What can I do to help?" |

Monte grunted in his sleep as the alarms broke into his fitful dreams. Someone had attached probes to his brain and jolts of electricity coursed through his subconscious. A mad-man face floated into his vision and he screamed silently in protest. The long needle approached his left eye slowly... With a thud, he rolled out of his bunk, landing on the hard deck just as he awoke. What the gorram Hell!! But after squinting and rubbing at his ears, he could still hear the proximity alerts going off. He sat up and shook his head to clear it from the foggy tendrils of sleep. He managed to get organized enough to pull trousers on and yank the suspenders over his bare shoulders before slapping the lock pad on his cabin door, and stepping through the opening portal. A quick dash up the stairs and through the shuttle bay brought him up behind the others gathered at the bridge. Africa was already offering her help, and Monte felt a twitch in the pit of his stomach. "Likewise. Security ready to explore." |

Elijah had been nestled on his bunk, door closed and serenity all around him, taking in the faded words of an old paperback when the alarms sounded. Since they'd departure, undertaken the job at hand, this was the first sign of anything out of the ordinary. It'd been one hell of a quiet journey and as he rose to his feet, pulling on his jacket, the Captain gave a soft smile at the sound of the alarms. The anticipation for what was happening - given they were at least a full hour off from the planet - gave him an ounce of excitement, something he'd never admit. Mostly, though, he felt it was good practice for the crew. Floating in the Black, seeing the worlds, it'd all be romanticised by even his own self. Of course travel such as theirs had its moments, but it was the unknown that the Reyne's crew needed practice with. Or maybe it was just the Captain who needed the practice - he was quick to forget that most of the crew had been flying a lot longer than he had. Shuffling from his cabin to the cockpit Eli clicked off the proximity alarm and settling into the pilot's chair. By the time he was seated the Captain had a good idea of what was happening, and all without checking the sensors before him. The hulking mass of abandoned ship was there, right before them, floating aimlessly through the nothingness that surrounded them all. The soft footfalls behind him signalled the arrival of his crew, one by one. Turning to face those who had assembled, Eli didn't say anything but gave a raise of his eyebrows and gestured out towards the floating hulk. A quick check of his readings showed that it wasn't powerless, but definitely not moving under its own devices. A trajectory to chaos, he thought, doing the quick calculation to prove just where the poor ship was headed. They didn't have long before it disappeared into flame. He keyed the console. "Unidentified vessel, this is the transport ship Grey Reyne. Do you read?" He let go of the button then gave a shrug to the others. "She's not entirely dead, but she's not moving either." |

"Hmph. No surprises there." The Captain spoke to himself mostly, one hand hovering over the sensors before him while he stared absentmindedly out into the nothingness that stretched between his seat and the floating remnants of the foreign ship. He gave a long sigh. "No doubt folk abandoned ship before things got too tight. By the looks of things..." He looked up from the hole ridden ship to his crew, who had assembled out of curiosity if nothing else, "... I'd doubt there's any corner of that boat that's still pressurised." He gave a nod to Africa, then stared back out the window for a few moments longer. The choices were many, despite what some might have thought of the situation, and he was weighing each one carefully. They were only a short limp home, to their destination and hopefully a pay cheque. Yet his interest was piqued. "Africa, Monte - suit up. We'll take the shuttle, see if we can't dock and get on board. Chances might be almost nothin', but there could be someone hidden away on that wreck who can't safely get to the comms to hail us." He gave another nod to the two crew members before turning to Carrie. "Reyne's all yours until we get back." |

Africa found she might be talking herself out of going, or rather suggesting to the Captain an alternative, "Captain, if the engines are out; Carrie would be the one to get them reset." Africa knew she did not have the expertise to make haste in the engine room of a ship heading into atmo without engines up and running. But then she couldn't fly either. She headed to the vacc suit lockers and the shuttle; if nothing else she would help them make ready. |

Monte nodded in agreement to Eli's request and turned on his heels and exited the bridge. He thumped the bulkhead side as he realized that he wouldn't have time to gather any of his gear before boarding the shuttle. The vacc suit lockers were in the bay next to the shuttle, just behind the bridge. He dressed rapidly, tucking the helmet under his left arm and boarded the smaller vessel. He took a moment to run through the typical pre-use checkout of his suit before settling into one of the seats. His skill in vacc suits wasn't that impressive, but at least he had used one time and again. He knew the basics and how not to get "holed" while maneuvering around a ship in one. |

Carrie wanted to complain, but Africa had beat her to the only reason Carrie could think for her to go. Eli trusted her to stay and man the controls of Reyne, which was huge in her book. Yet at the same time, she wanted to go and get her hands dirty too. It was what she did. What she was used to. Spose it's time to get used to the change a little more. Pressing her lips together, she looked over her shoulder as the rest began to head out. "You need help with engines, Africa, I might could walk you through it. If the hull ain't holdin pressure though, might not be worth tryin to fix, but we could scavenge some parts at the very least." The last was meant more for Eli's ears and response. It never hurt to have extra parts. Everyone on board knew, or had the vaguest of ideas, that the Black could be unforgiving. Carrie knew first hand the value of having extra parts around. Even if they weren't the exact part for this particular ship, they could probably be used as a makeshift until the right part could be found. |
