The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft. In orbit of Londinium Two months after the fall The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew. |

Monte turned to Eli after doing a quick scan of the various open containers. "Do we happen to have a chem scanner? It might just be me, but I worry that those who have a problem with Campbell's business might have stashed something in one or more of these open crates to disrupt our trip at some point along the way. With having one ship blow up almost from under me, I do have some reservations to unsealed containers." |

Chamberlain observed. Passive but fully aware. Her calm stance might suggest she was gazing off into the distance as if on some pleasure stim drops. "If Mr. Campbell is in trouble in paying his debts why would they want him to fail?" The answer was obvious of course. "Someone else. But who?" 'why is this paranoia so typical, so common?' Africa began to look to through the goods, helping to sort and put them away properly as she did so. "I'm sorry you're late Jarvis. This is an important shipment for some people on hard times. I do hope that it's all in order and we have no trouble." |

Eli gave a smile, nothing but polite, to Southby before turning his back slightly to consult with the others present. He listened to what Monte had to say, glad that someone else wasn't taking everything at face value, but didn't making any decisions just yet. Africa spoke up and the Captain eyed her for a moment, next glancing to Carrie and finally to the crates, another reassuring smile to Southby and his customs associate. Finally, in a hushed voice to Monte: "I think we'd have something of the sort. Soon as they're off I want the crates fully unloaded. Don't seem to suspicious to me, but the bureaucrat seems on edge. Then again, could be just having a bad day." He glanced back to Monte then, nodding his head towards the huge doors that led to the Black beyond. "If the goods are dangerous." Then he looked to Africa, reaching inside his jacket. "Might be something worth looking into. S'far as we know it's all on the level, but if there's a motive then I wouldn't blame someone. This shipment goes south, seems like Campbell has a lot to lose." He then turned away, raising an eyebrow to Carrie and Africa, and strode back across the bay to Southby, producing a handheld PDA from his pocket. "I'll forward the payment costs that I've strummed up straight to your employer then? Travel, expenses, fuel and security all factored in. I kept it all modest." He started tapping at the screen to provide Southby with a view of the figures that they'd come up with. It was pretty standard - enough to get the job done and keep the crew of four happy. The crew of five. He shook the thought from his mind for now. "Anything else, or should we be on our way? No doubt you've got other places to be as well as Mr Customs here." He gave a grin and a subtle roll of his eyes. |

Jervis perked up. " Great great I will just seal these up and be on my way then." He flew to work closing the five crates and taking his metal seal rings tucked them into the ring holes in the lid and main body of the crates. One after another the five remaining crates were sealed and the ragged customs agent became visibly calmer. " Now gentlemen I'm going home." He then turned on his heel and walked off. As soon as the last crate was sealed Southby's men began to load then up onto the ship per the crew's instructions. "Well Captain Harmon it was a pleasure doing business with you. Well it is just a pleasure doing business." Southby cracked a slight smile but he had a sad look that said this good turn might be to late. |

Making herself as useful as possible in the busy work, once completed, Chamberlain stepped out of the way, ready to close up the ship. The Captain seemed to want to know more, but her limited abilities to research the Cortex had reached its zenith. Instead, her only way to learn more would be to watch and interact with those involved. These men seemed to be what they were, dock workers looking to finish one job and get to another; consciencous. "Thank you." she would bow politely, but not with deference, to their departing guests. |

Eli had stood for a few moments with his arms crossed by the stairs, watching the crates be sealed up, and knowing too well that the lids would be ripped back off in the next hour. He didn't want to be a suspicious man, but their new employer was already having unseasonable problems. It never hurt to be cautious. Once the crates were done he approach Southby, accepting the thanks and the goodbye and sending his own regards. "We'll be in touch once we're en route, and again when the job's complete. Your employer can rest easy for this trip of the voyage." He gave an honest smile and shook Southby's hand before he and the customs officer made their departure. The Captain watched them leave, then slowly turned back to where his crew stood. Carrie had a forlorn look in her eyes as he spoke. Noted, he thought. "Right. First thing's first." He moved to the small intercom by the stairs and pushed a button that would broadcast up to where the bunks were. "Mr Lupin, to the cargo bay, please." He raised an eyebrow back to the crew with a small shrug. "This Arsene fellow... he and I have had words. He'll be with us during the trip, leaving at Athens unless it seems beneficial that he stays on board. For now..." He paused a moment, a small nod to Carrie, before continuing, "... I trust him, and I think his deceit was no more than desperation. That being said, everyone's to keep a sharp eye until we hit Ariel." He started for the stairs, gesturing for Carrie to follow. "Well played for all of you. Monte, you want to take care of these crates. Crack them, check them all over twice, and if we're all good we can stow them away. Mr Lupin should be able to give you a hand." Not a bad way to start earning your keep. He then gave a wink to Africa and started up the stairs to set their coordinates at the bridge. Southby took the captains hand and gave a firm shake. Then with the knowledge that he had just made some money today he walked off looking for the first corridor the customs officer Jervis didn't go down so that he and his men could go down the other one. Alone at last and with work to be done the crew set to it. |

Africa wasn't sure where the Captain wanted her to go, or to do. But then, he was like that. Seemed like he figured she'd know what to do, where do go. Which she didn't. Not that she hesitated to make a choice. Her instinct told her that Captain wanted private conference with Carrie. They had bonded fast to be the heart, soul and mind of the ship. After moving toward Monte and the crates; she took up the inventory. "Is this usual, to hand check all goods? I thought a seal meant that someone else took responsibility for the contents?" The answer was known, but she was as interested in just how much fear there was in moving contraband or suspician by all in what they were moving. The Captain wanted to know what was on his ship. |

Lupin sat in his new quarters and tapped away at his tablet's screen to get a feel for the system. He even managed to make a small list of things to do later on when given the opportunity. It wasn't long before the piercing sound of the PA carrying the captain's voice called for him to make his way to the cargo bay and with a quick stretch he got up from his seat, donned a grey vest and left the room at a brisk pace to where he was ordered. Navigating his way through the cargo bay entrance he looked around the room noting a few faces he didn't know the names of. He continued to walk on in and politely asked, "You called for me?" He took a moment to get a better look around since the only real time he spent in the room was while in hiding. |

"The Captain wants us to examine the crates." Africa didn't say for what. She wasn't entirely sure anyway. Monte seemed to be aware, looking for contraband was her best guess. Though what they would do if they found illicit or mislabeled goods she didn't know. Clearly the Captain wanted to know what was on his ship. Then it seemed to make a bit more sense. The ship had been 'rented' out, the captain a crew member. Now it was truly his. He needed to have her, control of her, knowledge of her. His. But not ownership, that was not how spacers felt about their ships. The Captain wanted to protect her. The Ship. And her crew of course. They're part of the ship. We're part of the ship. Not the other way around. Africa smiled at her thoughts, which matched her friendly demeanor to the former stow-away. Hand extended, "Africa Chamberlain. Deck hand and mechanic's assistant."

Monte had spent the first few minutes after the crates had been shackled down in the cargo bay, checking the seams of the five suspect containers. He pulled a chemical scanner out of one locker located near the cargo entrance leading back into the belly of the ship. Seeing the new arrival walk over to the crates and Africa greet him, Monte smiled and nodded at the five crates stacked more or less by themselves. "Hey. Monte, my name. Security and Cargo Master. These five containers were left unsecured for a time at the shippers. Could be they were tampered with; contraband added or even explosives planted in them to make our day a little less shiny. I'm going to scan for possible residue. I think the Captain might have wanted you to see if you detect any physical discrepancies. Yes? " |

Carrie fell in behind Eli, following him up to the bridge. She wasn't sure about throwing Arsene in so quickly, but then she'd also argued that they could use his skills. It still sort of burned her that he'd been able to sneak on board, and she wasn't at all sure about a glimpse of what was inside one of the crates. On that note, she was glad Eli was giving them the freedom to check them over again now that the crates were on board. "Any thoughts on our 'employer'?" she asked as they neared the bridge. Despite the fact that she was speaking, the words of Gordon Young still echoed in her head. You'll do fine. It was enough to draw a secretly proud, and yet strangely shy smile to her lips, but only just barely. Her hands ended up shoved into her pockets. With the last of the walk to the bridge, her body began to relax. |

Elijah led the way up, first to the middle deck landing where he nodded to Arsene as the man left his room, then took the next flight two at a time up to the bridge. Carrie was hot on his heels the whole time, though she remained silent until they hit the shuttle bay upstairs. There was obvious concern in her face when Eli glanced over his shoulder, though it seemed to be the 'ok, you know what you're doing' variety. Either way, it was good to know she was looking out for him. "Would've liked to meet the man in the flesh, as you can imagine." He shrugged, walking onto the bridge. "Still, seems as legitimate as any other offer we might have picked up 'round these parts. Hopefully it's on the level, but I ain't assuming a damn thing until we're underway." He leaned over the back of the pilot's seat, reaching around to hit a few buttons on the console. Their course would be relatively quick, direct, and the auto-pilot would take care of most of it. The Captain then keyed the intercom. "Aye, port control, this is Grey Reyne Actual. Departure in two minutes. Disengaging port lock now." He smiled, locking in the commands, and with one final check of the systems the Captain turned back to his First Mate, leaning against the chair's back. "And you? More importantly, any thoughts on our new crewmate?" |

Eli nodded as Carrie spoke, echoing his own concerns over the newcomer being on board and the somewhat vague job they'd managed to pickup. The Captain was glad the pair of them met eye to on it all - it's always good when the one watching your back knows exactly what you're all about. A final check of the instruments set the ship in motion - a minute or so later, the Reyne had cleared port control and was rocketing off into the Black. Ahead of them awaited their destination on Athens and hopefully an easy, smooth transaction upon their arrival. Carrie at his back, Elijah headed back out of the bridge and descended once more to the main deck. Down below his crew could be seen assembled, searching through the large crates that Southby had left them with. By the sounds of it, so far the search was going well. It would have been typical Harmon luck for the crates to be loaded with explosives or some such, but the lack of drama so far suggested the Captain might be in for a peaceful trip after all. He leaned against the rail, looking down at the small crew he had assembled, and gave a sharp whistle to get their attention. "Monte, what d'you hear?" |

Africa didn't see anything wrong with any of the cargo. There were supposed to be a thousand ways to hide illicit goods, yet as she helped the others, she realized she didn't know one. So she just took things open and looked around like she'd be doing an inventory; notching away what was there, how many, etc. She involuntarily watched the others. They seemed relaxed enough, more so now that they were on their way? Did that mean they were in less danger from their perspective? A lot can go wrong in the black... but not from the human perspective: fewer people, less chance of someone doing something to someone? "What does everyone do while travelling? I've some forms practice... or yoga? And some recordings if you like dancing?" Did that sound too flirtatious? What could they do to pass the time. But then the Captain was there. He was back from his little private consultation with the First Mate. |

One by one the crates were opened to reveal the mundane articles that were in the five example crates. The one thing different out of the normal cargo was a donations envelope containing five thousand alliance credits from one of the larger churches on Londinium. The Grey Rayne shot through the black and with the crates cargo verified the atmosphere on the ship lightened. |

( Sometime later I guess. ) Africa was good as her word. She exercised, practiced Tai Chi and Yogo forms, or if anyone asked, more rigorous pilates type exercises. She could pound the bejesus out of the heavy bag. Always in a good mood, always smiling unless a situation or harsh words meant a more appropriate response. She asked questions to people: where they were from and what it was like, what they are like, what do they love, what do they want in their life. Her inhibitions in sharing own history could be infectious. Anyone wanting to know her only needed to ask: the martial arts training (though little indication of just how advanced she is), her odd cult-like upbringing. In her life she wanted experiences, she needed to see the verse; understand more.... ENLIGHTENMENT. The be one with the path. To keep her current state of grace and let it engulf her. And yet... there was a hunger for a peek over the fence. "I'm not even sure what that means." which might be the only slightly untrue thing she'd say. She knew what that meant, she just wasn't sure she dared peek. The companion husband, the only love, and technically lover, of her life. This is the one area that seems to bring a tinge of regret and pain. Otherwise Africa Chamberlain is continuously friendly and uplifting. Then she found one of those old rubber blow up balls from school playgrounds for the last 600 years. She smiled as evil as she could, which wasn't very much. "Dodgeball." she said, and tossed it toward the closest person in the cargo deck, low and hard at their legs.

{a good time later, indeed} Since the search of the cargo crates had proven fruitless in trying to find any contraband or secreted explosive devices, Monte had relaxed his concern. He had been stretching out on the cargo floor when the large sphere came flying past, grazing off his forehead. He then recognized the cat call from Africa, supposedly announcing her plan of attack. He rolled over and bounced up onto his feet, snatching the ball as it rebounded off the nearby wall. Glancing around, he cast the ball at the next available target in a long hook shot. |
