The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft. In orbit of Londinium Two months after the fall The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew. |

Eli only spent a short few moments searching over the document that Africa had handed him, nodding at a few of the less expected details - all in all, though, the man and his offer seemed on the level. For a job that basically stumbled upon them, it wasn't a bad gig. Finally he gave a small smile of thanks and handed the document back to her. "Thanks. Looks good to me. We best get ourselves in cargo transporting shape, eh?" He started out of bridge, assuming at least Monte would follow, and his thoughts moved down to the stowaway they had yet to properly deal with. The Captain had a rough idea of how he wanted this to go down, but only time would tell. "I'm to finish up my chat with Mr Lupin. Africa, ready the ship for our cargo delivery? Ping me when we get hailed. And if port control calls in again..." He shot a mischievous, very much out of character grin over his shoulder, "... let them know we're about to make way." The Captain then gave a nod to Monte and headed for the stairs. Ducking down into the living area, Eli gave a quick glance down towards the engine room, almost certain that's where his First Mate was nested by now. "Carrie? Quick chat in my quarters in ten." He didn't wait for a response - wherever she was, she should have heard. Right... our new friend. The Captain moved down the hall and to where Lupin had been accommodated, hand hovering over a button on the wall for the sliding door to open. Edited by PMD14, May 21 2013, 10:00 AM.

Monte nodded and followed Eli as he headed back down to the stow's stateroom. "When the shipment gets here, I'll be on guard with the loading. If you need me to stand guard while you finish up with this guy?" |

Eli nodded in agreement to Monte. "Sounds good. I think I'll be alright with this one. If I need a thing, ya'll will hear it." He gave a grin and then hit the button, entering the guest room, letting the door close behind him. The room was mostly bare, recently evacuated by the passengers they'd been transporting, but it was much more comely than the storage room Lupin had been confined to so far. "My apologies, Mr Lupin. Business called." The Captain stepped into the room, doing what he could to return to his morning inspired grumpiness, and eyed the 'passenger' carefully. "Where were we?" |

Lupin kept quiet when the crew member asked what else he was good at. He figured it was probably not best yet to go bragging about what he can do or to go into depth. After having been escorted to his new accommodations he looked around and said to himself, "Well you could have ended up in an alliance jail." He dropped his bag into the corner, he went this long without its contents what's another few minutes before unpacking. He stood there and took it in and for the 100th time wondered how his con on the baroness went wrong, everything was set. He had the money in his hand but then it went down in flames. C'est la vie. Before too long though, the captain showed back up and asked where they left off from their earlier. Lupin replied, "You were asking about the hows and whys on me getting aboard. And then I was offering to help with your ship’s security. Cause you’d be surprised what some folks can manage with a connection to a ship's nav" |

While the Reyne wasn't at full burn, much less a slow idle, the hum of the machinery was enough. Just enough to soothe the edge of the frustration in Carrie. Then came the call on the comm. She had ten minutes before she was needed up in Eli's quarters. Likely info on the job offer. Her eyes closed as she stretched her neck, a couple of pops relieving a tiny bit of the tension. Stop worrying about mistakes you might make, Carrie. You make the best calls you can with the information you've got. Mistakes will happen, that's just life. It's how you deal with those mistakes that matters. You might not think you're up to this, but I'd say that new captain of yours sees what Judd and I always saw. You'll do fine. Gordon's words echoed in Carrie's head. They'd talked not long after she'd talked to Eli about why he'd picked her for first mate. As Eli leaned on her, she'd reached out and leaned a little on an old friend. She'd leaned a little on Eli too, but there was something about the weight she could see on the mans mind that kept her from leaning too heavily. Her eyes opened. A deep breath and a quick exhale and she decided that, rather than wait, she would head on up. Turning, she exited the engine room and started to make her way upwards. |

"Turns out you might be right." Eli let the words flow in a lazy sigh as he leaned against the wall beside the closed door, focussing on the conversation at hand. His wanted to be everywhere at once - on the job offer, with Carrie, with the crew, back at home. One thing at a time, he promised himself. "You got the upper hand on us all and no doubt you can forgive me this once for not being impressed." He raised an eyebrow at that, trying his best not to sound too forgiving. It was more or less evident in his words that the man had already made up his mind on the whole matter. "Ship board security is a big issue, clearly, and with such a small permanent crew, it's mighty easy to climb aboard unnoticed. Not to mention the whole nav issue." He brought it up like he knew what Arsene had been talking about. "As far as you go, and your story. Seems to me, man like you might not find himself too at home on a fancy rock like Londinum, suits and uniforms and cameras everywhere." He cleared his throat, pausing for a moment, and caught Lupins eye contact before he went on. "We lot are headed for Athens. Wouldn't see too much harm for an extra set of hands to hang around - clearly two months didn't do us no harm." As long as those hands keep away from the weapons locker, he decided not to add. "What're your own plans? If I was to send you off board now, marching on down to the capital, where would you head?" |

Africa again found her self on bridge duty. She didn't mind. Carrie could really handle the engineering work. Most of what Carrie had asked Africa to do had been to train her, experience, giving her more and more busy work to mostly keep the ship pristine and give her more insight into the ship. Africa much appreciated it and made her thanks known enough not to be over much. On the bridge she learned too. She sat the diagnostics and comms at low levels, then stood calmly in the center of the bridge. Chamberlain emptied and left her thoughts in her subconscious; she let the boat come to life around her. Be alive. That was the way wasn't it, of those in the black... ... don't think on it, accept it... .... the ship; the black; the lives within; the infinite beyond; He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternity's sun rise. * comm traffic brought her back to the bridge, 'why that? what did that mean?' embrace joy? but not be bound... ,,, ,,, ... ,,, ![]() * courtesy William Blake |

Lupin listed tot he captains words closely, as he went on mentioning the whole sneaking aboard thing Lupin felt the need to quickly interject, "I never claimed it was anything special." As he continued about the ship's destination being Ariel Lupin's hopes rose since that was a great place to work. But then sure enough his hopes were nearly dashed as the captain mentioned the idea of dropping him off in the core. And the question on what he would do was surely a direct insult, one he wanted to reply cynically his first thing being to walk to the nearest police station and turning himself in. "I wouldn't know what to do in such a busy place," he paused a moment as he gathered himself, "Honestly I would get off that rock quick as I can. The place just feels so fake and I'd be anywhere but there." |

Africa had been thinking, or not thinking; as was the way. Of life, the black. The oft told sense of one's boat being crew. It was a common theme. That the black was alive with it's own infinite power, that which holds all things; and 'the boat' Loved these boats were, and loved by them to hear spacer folk tell it. And somewhere deep inside was that longing for letting it engulf her. To become and experience all things; to join the verse in all it's endless dark. But one cannot tie themselves to such notions, do not become bound to this joy that is at hand. But to love it, to kiss it; to be connected to it? To all of it. Without the bindings. And what were her bindings? Her training, her history, her life? How then to kiss joy in flight? Eternity's sunrise. What a blessed existence. |

Elijah listened quietly to what the man before him had to say, glancing around the room as he did. His eyes finally rested on the bag Lupin had dropped to the side. Someone's not settling in. The Captain liked that. He didn't much appreciate people making presumptions, so the new potential crew member had ticked one box. The second was ticked when he admitted that Londinum wasn't an ideal location for a man of his talents. Is he truthful because he doesn't have a choice or are we getting somewhere here? The Captain let silence hang in the air for a long minute or two before he spoke again. Everything was mulled over by then and, despite needed a good chat with a certain someone, he felt his gut was good enough to follow on this one. "Right. Mr Lupin. Let me formally welcome you aboard the Grey Reyne." He took a step forward, holding out a genuine hand towards Arsene, and tried for some kind of empathetic smile. It was evident that being happy wasn't his forte, but the effort showed. "I'm Captain Elijah Harmon and you're welcome aboard our boat until we hit Ariel. After that, 'ssuming you haven't done any harm, we can see about the future." He emphasised the word Captain there. The offer was straight forward, perhaps a little out of logic, but the Captain had weighed the odds. Second pair of hands would be great, and truth be told, how much harm could he do? First sign of trouble and he's gone. "Now, if you'll excuse me, there's some business to be done. I'd 'ppreciate, for now, if you stayed put in here. Kitchen's down the way if you need, but don't go wandering too far until we're on the move. I'll let the others know what's what." |

Africa's musing were interrupted by a ping the equivalent of a knock on the proverbial door. Outside the ship were six men and twenty crates. Fifteen of which were sealed by customs. A stern looking man hovered over the five unsealed crates with a work pad in hand and seals in his pocket. The five workers gave him looks that said this man had been on their last nerve for quite some time now. One of the men, the one who was at the intercom, spoke softly. "Grey Reyne this is Southby with the delivery from mister Campbell." |

With a blink Africa Chamberlain returned to the material verse, a pleasant smile on her face and a calm freshness washing over her. "This is Miss Chamberlain." Africa commed in her most disarming voice, natural and sincere. "The Captain will receive you in a moment." She announced over the speaker, "Delivery of goods at cargo deck." where else? she laughed, then set the door locks to open in a minute to give her time to get there in case the rest of the crew was busy. With a delighted hurry in her step she jogged to the door, prepared to open and create the deliverymen. |

Monte heard the announcement and entered his cabin, pulling open the small case at the foot of his bunk. Out of this he pulled his shotgun, and selected a handful of shells, mostly birdshot but a few special non-lethal taser rounds. He slid the shoulder strap onto his back and loaded the two chambers with alternating rounds as he walked back out to the cargo hatchway. Determined this time that nothing would get on the ship that wasn't authorized, he slung the custom gun into its rig and smiled.

Eli was making his way towards the stairs that led up to his cabin when the announcement sounded across the ship. The Captain stopped, hands on the side railings that led up, and shook his head. Few minutes ago we were unemployed, now I can't get a moment's peace. He let out a long sigh, taking the stairs two at a time, and broke the distance from the stairwell to his cabin in half a dozen paces. Carrie was already waiting there. "So... wanted to have a bit of a chat on this whole 'stowaway' business. Turns out the real business is at hand. Mind coming down to welcome our new cargo?" |

"Lead on," Carrie gestured back towards the way Eli had come. She'd come out of her short, dark musings in regards to the ships security. Of course, she'd vowed she wasn't going to let it happen again, though she hadn't quite worked out how. Following Eli, she kept up, but didn't move ahead of him. "Job seemed legit enough?" She was a little out of the loop on the job, having been busied with settling the new face aboard. Obviously, Eli had to think so or he wouldn't have taken it. Or would he? Doesn't seem the type to take something sketchy on the face. |

The customs agent gave Africa a passing glance as he paced angrily beside the open containers. He kept mumbling about having to work on his day off when these boxes could have been sealed an days ago when he had sealed the rest of them. Campbell's foreman Southby rolled his eyes at the mans actions. He had had his fill of the man by now and would be glad to have the cargo loaded and the vile man away. Southby stepped up to the ship and held his hand out. " Southby. It's a pleasure. The tetchy one is our customs man. Please feel free to check everything out." The five opened containers were sorted by cargo the first one was full of paper, pencils, crayons, tablets fully loaded with textbooks and the like. The next box had bags and backpacks the right size for young and older children. The next was filled with condensed protein bars. The one after that carried some canned goods and seeds, and the last was filled with medical supplies. All the crates had the legitimate papers with an Alliance customs stamp of approval. |

Monte stood at the entrance to the cargo bay, watching carefully while the customs man strode around grumbling. He had had his share of cargo mishaps, loading and unloading as well as disgruntled agents inspecting every nook and cranny of every box and pallet. This one seemed particularly unimpressive. Monte took a moment to walk down to the open crates and glance inside, judging the depth of each and considering the outside dimensions. Any chance there might be a hidden floor in any of these? Why wouldn't they be sealed initially? he picked out a sample of each of the backpacks and canned goods, checking them for any possible contraband before tossing them back in. Once he felt at ease, he resumed his location at the hatch. |

"Seemed so, yeah." Eli took the stairs two at a time, Carrie in tow, and nodded as she piped up from behind. "Doesn't mean it's on the level, but I think it'll serve." He hit the bottom of the stairwell and made his way across the catwalk, eyeing the goods and strange faces down below. He stopped for a few moments before descending, then, turning to his First Mate. "We'll need to chat on it a bit later, but for now I think getting this cargo stowed and making way is as good a plan as any. Busy day ahead, it'd seem, given cargo and new souls aboard." He gave a reassuring smile and then began down the cargo hold. For some reason, the long gone soldier creeping up into his mind, the first thing Eli thought about when he met eyes with the two strangers on board his ship was that he was unarmed. His piece was still in the kitchen. Surely that's not necessary? It's just a cargo shipment. Despite that, the Captain's concerns were mostly vanquished when he saw Monte inspecting the goods - more specifically, the gear he was packing. Hitting the cargo bay floor Elijah gave a friendly wave and closed the gap between himself the the Southby man, nodding his approval to Monte who had just finished up checking the crates. The Captain took the man's hand and shook it well. "Captain Harmon. Glad to be making some business today. You're Campbell's man?" He took a step back once the man released him and stood watching Monte finish up. From where he stood, Eli could grab a glimpse here and there of what kind of goods they were carrying, and had no doubt a second check over would be of use once they were underway. Just in case. "Any other details we need to get sorted before we get going? Nothing overly special about these crates, I imagine?" |

Lupin stood there in the middle of his new quarters, nothing too shabby. Infact it was the kind of place he would typically hole up in. "Any place you can hang your hat I suppose..." He opened his bag and put away a few of his things mostly a few changes worth of clothes and some of tools which he could find a place for. The rest he left alone and with that little chore done he pulled out his computer tablet, it wasn't anything too special but it got the job done specially with some of the software he had installed. With the push of a button he turned on the device and began poking around the ship's system to get an idea of just what he would be working with. |

"Southby sir. Jason Southby and yes I'm the foreman for Mr. Campbell's distribution warehouse. Business has not been booming." The man shook his head from side to side. Obvious worry lines formed on his forehead. "It's been tough since that man got himself in trouble. I don't like to speak ill of my employer but with so many people under his care depending on this job he should've been more careful." Southby gave a slight tired laugh. "The only thing special about these crates is the amount of undue stress they've caused our little customs friend here. The rest were sealed the other day but Mr. Campbell knew that anyone he hasn't worked with before would want to see the goods prior to loading up." Southby hooked his thumb back towards the agitated man pacing still. "Jervis here just wants to get them sealed so he can go home. It's-" "It's MY day off and I've been roused for this nonsense because I'm the one who inspected the other crates. They all have to have my specific ident stamp. I don't see the point of keeping any of them open once they've been inspected by me!" As quickly as he chimed in the man went back to his pacing and mumbling. Southby continued, "Jervis doesn't get the nuances of business as you can see. As for any other details I would just caution you from the major city ruins of Athens. Salvage is great there if you can get the gorram government to approve a license but even then the poachers are savagely blood thirsty." Southby clapped his hands together and looked at his men then back to Elijah. "Should we get this all loaded up and how would you liked paid?" " Yes, yes can I seal these up now?" The customs agent pulled his seals from his pocket and stood there in anticipation. |
