A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

Monte left the side of the mule to follow slightly behind Elijah toward the door. As it opened, he kept one eye open for movement behind them. Once the woman had approached and introduced herself, he touched the brim of his hat and gave a slight nod.

When the garage opened, he focused into the darkness inside to try to pierce for any oddness. Satisfied, he relaxed a little.

"Glad to have been of service, Ma'am. Weren't no big trouble once we got underway."
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now

Carrie gave a smile, nod and a wave and then did a little bit of a double take at Eli's back. She turned to begin unloading the cargo while mouthing the phrase the captain had used to describe her. Dove faced.... dove faced? What in the gorram hell does THAT mean? There'd been many ways used to describe her, but this was a new one. And she had no idea how to take it.

Setting down the first crate, she looked back over to the two men. A smirk crossed her lips. They were a little preoccupied with the lady school teacher, who just talked on and on. She seemed nice enough though. Shaking her head as the 'boys' played nice, Carrie went on unloading, not having too much difficulty on her own.

"Minato Saionji, by the way. Freelancer and part-time salvager." said the nice man, well mannered, nice smile. Real.

Africa bowed ever so slightly as she was sitting at the bar. "I am Africa Chamberlain, Shepherd of the Wings of God and part-time welder and machinist mate." It was her practice to use her more formal title when not looking for work. Hiring Captain's didn't generally want to hear about taking on religious folk.

She paused long enough for Lupin to make his own introduction, or not; then she leaned toward Minato, and whispered, "What is it about those men that concerns you?" Africa did not look to them and spoke with her mouth half covered.

Then she sat up and sampled the bourbon and tea as precisely as Minato had done. The bourbon coursed quickly through her, but the mixing of the flavors, "oh my."

Lupin smoked his cigarette and listened to the man’s story as brief as it was. He was however impressed by Africa's more formal title. He then casually remarked, “Well it certainly sounds intriguing to be able to jump world to world fallowing the work. Sort of reminds me of one of those old novels by Steinbeck.” Lupin didn’t bother to introduce himself; he figured names only have a tendency to get in the way of a con in a small town like this. But he watched as Minato stared intently at a group of men playing cards.

Africa beat him to asking but he quickly fallowed up to avoid making the question sound so direct, "What she means is that you're awful preoccupied with those folks. Did you have a friend over there or are you perhaps a gambling man?" He smiled as finished up his question to try and keep things friendly.

Lupin took his glass of whiskey and finished its contents with a heavy burn. It wasn’t pleasant but he tried not to let it show and quickly took refuge in his tobacco once more to help ease the sting. He was trying to poke around to get a feel for the stranger to see if he was suspicious, strange or just a genuinely nice fella that was poorly out of place.

Africa continued to savor the taste of the bourbon and the oolong tea. The sensations of taste and smell, the gentle warming sensation that each caused; each of their own way. Yet they were intertwined and circled around each other. Her eyes loosened their focus and looked lazily to behind the bar, the movements of the saloon reflected in dozens of curved surfaces. A memory of a family on the move to better things, leaving an ancient Earth-that-was dustbowl for a land west, hope burned in their hearts. Determination.

And she listened to the voice of Arsene Lupin, like silk is stroked along her inner ear. This was a man to be listened to, perhaps not to be believed; she smiled as his lips reflected on a silvery bottle of gin.

Satiated with the slightest of senstations she took them in and moved to a quiet awareness of all things; and a gentle state of zen like grace. It was good to be alive, to feel and be aware. In all things there is the connections to all things, even to the void that isn't.

But she thought consciously of none of this. Africa slipped back a little on the bar stool so that Arsene and Minato could speak.

Kenji's eyes widened a bit at the newcomer as she introduced herself. The man was surprised to see a Shepherd in a dingy backwater bar. "This wouldn't be the place I'd expect to encounter a Shepherd." He said whimsically taking another sip from the bourbon on the counter, the cup of tea still in his hand. The blond noted that the man accompanying Africa neglected to introduce himself.

He let it go, a small grin appearing on his face as he heard her reference the men at the table. Lupin chimed in, expatiating the shepherd's question.

The freelancer couldn't help but chuckle at the question posed to him. "Neither, to be truthful..." His voice dropped low as he set the teacup on the bar, and leaned in. "Listen to everyone else, they're rip roaring, having a great time. These six... just a bad feeling" Kenji straightened, taking the glass of bourbon in hand.

"Besides, you never know what you could run into out here." The man finished the amber contents of the glass hurriedly before chasing it down with the rest of the tea, no longer savoring the flavor. "My question is what brings a shepherd and her acolyte this far out from civilization?" he queried green eyes falling to the pair, as he was examined their faces and body language.

He scrutinized Lupin in the guise of a questioning gaze, he knew that this wasn't the man he was looking for, but the fact that he remained relatively quiet about himself put the freelancer off.

why had she said that, a shepherd? she had no flock, no following, yet that was her purpose yes?

"I lost my flock, all of them. Scattered and gone, so I've been looking for the others..." Her eyes followed the bar in the bottles behind the bar, "the sheep and goat of all the colors. There is something else, I can't quite see it yet;" her head turned a little at an arc of color between an old rye and a flavored vodka. "So I've been looking away hoping that the sight of it will come to me."

Africa took another tiny sip of the bourbon, and then the tea she held in her hand; mimicing Kenji. She turned and smiled; her concern of the group of men diminished. Her senses were tuned in, the odd paradox of her thoughts and subconscious swirling around together. Her eyes just a little glassy, yet with the quiet twinkle of an aged sage.

Then with a playful sarcasm, "And just what do you lance for free Mister Saionji?"

"I'm glad to hear that. These supplies are a Godsend. I have to order bulk due to the lack of off world traffic. If you will unload everything into my garage I'll head upstairs and get your payment." Trudy turned and went upstairs. She returned a few minutes later with a small bag full of coins. She handed Eli the bag pleased to see her storage go from empty to full in a matter of moments. "Captain Eli I've sent confirmation of delivery to the supplier and this is my paltry attempt as a tip from the bottom of my heart." As she spoke Eli's cortex device buzzed with electronic payment received for the remainder of the payment promised. The first job complete.

The Rooster

The bigger of the quiet men had a scar down his cheek. As if confident of their purpose he stood up. All the men stood up with him and followed him out of the door.

The Bradford

The six men approached from behind and grabbed up Daiyu. Two of them beat Clarence and then choked him unconscious for his trouble in a brief attempt to defend the Companion. Three of the men drug Daiyu struggling violently into the alley between the Rooster and the Bradford. The large man with the scar loomed over Daiyu with intent burning in his eyes. "I'm going to give you an experience like none you've ever had with those pantywaist uppity ups! Then my boys 'ill get a taste too."

Kenji was about to reply off-handedly when he noticed movement flash out of the corner of his eye. He turned to his drinking partners and instead flashed a grin. "Stuff and things mostly..., The thrill of the hunt was already coursing through him. He shot up from the stool and cracked his neck.

He walked towards the entrance to the bar, a cool wind blowing from outside. He peeked outside looking both ways for any sign of the group. He was about to turn around and head back to the bar when he heard a commotion coming from the building next door. He slipped back inside just enough to remain hidden as the ruckus moved to the alleyway between the hotel and bar. "Though I could just as soon show you." He finished tilting his head towards the exit.

Without waiting for a reply Kenji exited the dingy establishment and rounded the corner to the alley. He took a deep breath as he surveyed the scene. 4 out of the six men were accounted for. Three of the men were wrestling with what seemed to be a woman of grace. The scarred man leaned over the companion, trying to intimidate her into submission.

The freelancer reached down and patted Big Iron and took the safety off before making a move.
He cleared leather and brought the barrel to bear right at the thugs ass. He inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly as his index finger pulled back on the hair trigger. The smell of powder filled the alleyway.

Chamberlain watched the six men leave. Like buffalo, strong enough, but slow and with heavy feet. Alone they probably had little heart for trouble, in their small herd they could be dangerous.

Africa moved to the center of the Rooster Saloon as Kenji moved to the exit. She watched the Freelancer. He was looking for trouble, he'd find it. As he turned his head she got a better look at the scar the half covered with his hair.

The man with the false name moved well and at ease. There was training, not like hers though. Military. Though of course that was not unusual. But it was more, he was not a mere soldier; there was something coursing in his veins. Danger had started, the man sensed it and rushed to it. Not so much of bravery, but from Africa's perspective, for the thrill of it.

Africa heard took a left and exited the saloon directly into the alley instead of following Kenji. The men were there, assaulting a woman. They were spread out, making sure if the woman broke free, they could stop her. Like lumbering slugs, she thought as she stepped into the middle of them.

Even if Kenji did not help the men didn't pose a threat in her mind. Three of them made some sort of comment and moved toward her. In perfect triad form she'd put them down easy,

, . then the gun came out, "No!" she called out; and Kenji shot. Africa made an adjustment to her tactics. There would be knives and probably more guns. She would have to put them down hard now.

The Captain stood silent as Trudy disappeared upstairs to retrieve the payment. Odd, he thought, I would have thought an electronic transfer was in order. He gave Monte a shrug and assisted Carrie in offloading some of the containers. Slowly the garage was filling up. When the woman returned, Eli understood after all - he didn't even need her to explain.

"Please." Eli gave the woman a polite smile and held out his hand to the small bag of money - no doubt a savings 'account' this lady had been saving up for some time, likely since the last delivery. He and his had been paid well already, the electronic funds cleared and in his account. Now wasn't the time to be pinching penny's from the locals, not on a world like Athens.

"It's appreciated, but I can assure you our payment is solid. I'm sure the coin will go to a better place here." He gave a small nod and started back to the mule, waving to Monte and Carrie to signal a job well done. "It's been a pleasure. Until next time, Trudy." The Captain called out, mounting up onto the mule. After they loaded up and the engine was running, the Captain grinned to the others.

"Celebration?"

Lupin, mostly out of his own curiosity, listened as Africa responded to the freelancer’s questions on her flock. It was sad in a poetic way that had left an air of tranquility as she finished sipping her bourbon. Then came the 64 dollar question, just what did the stranger call work. But that was a bust as the man copped out and didn’t even have the decency to lie. As the commotion next door drew the stranger outside Lupin watched as Africa quickly fallowed and with a smirk said to noone, "Well this should be interesting..." He got up and grabbed his cigarettes from the counter as fallowed while keeping a ways back.

Lupin might have a code of honor but he isn’t an idiot either. Truth was his gun was on the ship and there wasn’t a chance in hell he could take on any of the 6 men. Then a feeling of unease hit him as he heard the gun go off. "Great now he's done it" he mumbled to himself being more familiar with the ramifications of being in the core against being out in the sticks.

Elijah nodded, giving Monte a pat on the shoulder, and turned on his side to look back at Carrie as the mule started moving underneath them. He gave her a wide grin, from a Captain to his First Mate, and left it at that. What was there to say? The still-green Captain felt a high that moment, as the vehicle started to pick up speed and the night air flew across his face. For the first time since Verbena he felt joy inside. Accomplishment. Something that had been missing for far too long.

"Sounds like a plan." The comment was delayed - he didn't care. "First rounds on this old Captain, eh?" He leaned back in the chair then, eyes closed, letting the night world close in around him as the trio head off down the main street. Time to start anew, he thought. Finally. The thought warmed him, despite the coolness of the air, and for a moment the man was at peace. It was temporary, of course, only a facade of what was beneath.

That hole that could never be filled, the darkness that had been forced upon him those months ago. It was a strange feeling that crept back into his mind, a chilling euphoric trance that all but took over, lined with this feeling of dread and contempt. Was this truly the start of something new, or was it just the beginning of the end?

The old man had no idea that the ghosts of his past were far from gone - just around the corner, in fact.
