A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

Eli gave a mock salute to Africa as she hopped off. "Keep safe, don't cause too much trouble. Might see you a bit later on if you're lucky. Or unlucky." The Captain gave a cheeky grin before turning around as Carrie started whistling away. Far too giddy for my liking, he thought in jest, though the truth was that the feeling seemed to be contagious. It was a combination of a job well done - well, almost done - and solid ground beneath their feet that seemed to set the group free.

"Best not be too cheerful there... still on duty, after all." He shot her a smile that was difficult to take serious before turning to Lupin who was tucked away in the back. "Jumping off here, chap? Or?"

Lupin was already starting to get up and out of the vehicle. He was taking a moment to straighten his tie as he answered, “Yep, I figured I would keep an eye on her and see what kind of night life a one horse town like this has.” He smiled as he took a short and mostly unnecessary leap off the transport and smiled at the captain as he headed off towards the bar, “I’ll see you later.” He took a few steps before turning back around again, “Oh and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” he grinned as he strolled off to the door of the bar.

He stopped outside the bar and looked it over. It sounded like a bar and looked like one. But boy were there some changes that takes some getting used to from outside the cities. “Good bye city life; green acres we are there…” he said in melodic fashion just short of singing as he walked into the bar. It didn’t take long for smell of old alcohol, stale smoke and a few other unidentifiable scents to certify the rooster as a bar. “Well certainly smells like a bar.” He muttered to himself as he looked around and took in what little ambiance the place had to offer before making his way to the bar.

"Keep your eyes open, girl. Not someplace you want to get lost in. We'll be around and I'll drop back by after we're done with business." said Monte.

Africa nodded in the affirmative. People worried about her, she got that. But getting lost for a bit, that was the entire point.

"Catch up with you after the job's done. You got a way to get in touch if you need it?" Asked Carrie.

"No. I'll be fine." Really, she tried to convince with a confident smile.

"Keep safe, don't cause too much trouble. Might see you a bit later on if you're lucky. Or unlucky." said the Captain.

In the dark maybe they didn't see her turn bright red. She didn't realize maybe that's why they thought she wanted to be alone was for some sexual company. That was what he meant wasn't it? OR was that just a warning? Yes. it was. Why had her mind gone there. Sexual company. She smiled, this was really going to be an excellent adventure.

Then Lupin got joinned her, or at least decided to go in as well. "Mr. Lupin will be here." She waved enthusiastically, it was obvious that they had concerns for and about her. They were good people. They liked her.

It felt good.

Africa followed Lupin into the tavern. The man entered with good spirits Africa could admire; made a reference obscure to her; and finished with, “Well certainly smells like a bar.”

Africa's heightened senses made here wince a little. She had not been in a lot of bars, not on the rim or even the border. But "Smells like vomit." she said aloud. It wasn't one of the smells she'd associated to the tamer core world saloons near the docks she'd frequented.

There had already been some thought given to the mysterious Arsene Lupin. First of all he was a stow-a-way. An exciting and interesting thing to be. He'd talked his way out of being spaced (stories of which seemed to persist thought Africa had never heard of any actual incidents), and then out of arrest, and then was not part of their crew.

And he was very pretty. Pretty like a companion, like her husband.

Ex-Husband.

But he also seemed to have a slyness. The manner in which he had made himself one of them. She hadn't come to watch him. But the idea of this city wise slicker and the people of the tavern of the vomit stained floor.

God she felt wicked. Africa stepped forward with a hope of danger in the night, she brazenly took Lupin by the hand. She said it with a firmness that left only the slightest possibility that it was a request.

"Buy me a drink."

Eli just smirked at Arsene's remark and then settled back down into the passenger seat of the mule. Monte at the controls, Carrie over one shoulder, the cargo stored just behind her, Eli was ready to start taking the night seriously. He'd gotten the vibe, not only from her casual demeanor, that Carrie might have rather indulging in other plans for the evening. No rest for the wicked, he thought. For this first run, anyway, he wanted her on hand.

"Right. Shall we? Schoolhouse is just up and the to the left, I'm thinking." He'd had a quick look over the town schematics before breaking atmo - what little there was of the town to look at - and of all places, the school had seemed an obvious enough spot for the drop. The Captain gave Monte a pat on the shoulder and lit up once more as they slowly rolled ahead to the destination. Eli breathed deep then, leaning his head back to stare up at the night sky.

Kenji turned his head to look at the door to see a couple stroll into the bar. He caught a glimpse of the mule head off towards the schoolhouse. "Offworlders... So they must have arrived a short time ago.." He thought to myself. He thought about what the bartender had mentioned to him just moments before. ""You ain't talkin' about the schoolhouse shipment? Don't know the name of the ship but that's the only ship been inbound since the pretty bird got dropped off...something about the children...As for when the ship arrives it should be here anytime" Kenji took a breath and ran his fingers though his hair.

"Smells like vomit."
He heard Africa answer Lupin aloud. "That's the rim for you..." he answered regarding the pair fully. "Don't mind me though.." He said noting what they had on. He took note of the condition of their bodies. He masked it in a passing gaze as he turned to look out the window, the mule already out of sight. It was only a matter of time now. Until what Kenji didn't know, he just had a feeling. "Barkeep..." He said loud enough to get the man's attention. " How much longer on the Oolong and the Bourbon?"

Lupin laughed a little at Africa’s remark about the bar smelling like vomit. He was then distracted by a stranger at the bar who was listening in, Lupin had become immediately suspicious but did what he could to avoid letting it show and replied. “Yeah it certainly is.” He made sure to build up an air of confidence in his tone that was typically seen out of the well-to-do found in the central planets.

He grinned back at Africa and said, “Come along dear, let’s get you that drink.” He motioned to her with his eyes to signal to move further down the bar as he took a set. Comfortable that there were enough stools between them and the stranger he leaned in casually and in a hushed tone explained, “I don’t like the looks of that guy. I’ve scoped out enough people in my work to know what it looks like. And while I might not be from these parts but I know a local would never insult their neck of the woods so casually.” He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and offered her one by leaving it out on the bar top and in a cheerful tone added, “Let’s have a couple of drinks and enjoy ourselves.”

"Oolong?" she inquired of the stranger, then smiled as Lupin lightly pressed that they take seats a little further away. She appreciated his concerns, but it was these sort of interactions that she was interested in.

"Just one drink for now. It takes me awhile to process the alcohol without become impaired." She said it a little matter of factly, realized it. But she was still looking down the bar at the stranger. Africa turned back to Lupin.

"I don't like the numbing, the... " How did one put it? "It makes me slow witted and with heavy foot. And the loss of judgement and inhibitions."

Monte watched for a moment as the others departed, and then Eli slapped him on the back and directed him onward. He grinned and slid the throttle forward gradually as the mule growled low and moved back into the thoroughfare.

"Any thoughts on what's next for our intrepid crew? After we're paid and all. Shopping? Looking for more cargo? "

"Oolong?
"Just a preference. I find the tea brings out the natural flavors of the bourbon..." He said matter-of-factly. Kenji propped his elbows on the table and laced his fingers in front of his eyes grinning softly under the guise of a blissful thought. "So long as I've made an impression he thought to himself. If the barkeeper and the information on the scrap of paper were to be believed. Then there was no doubt that they were members of the Reyne's crew. His green eyes flashed from behind his knuckles to stare at the various bottles along the shelf. Which would mean that the mule would be on it's way to the schoolhouse. He reasoned, seeing that the goods were for the children.

The man brushed the side of his hair down to cover the corner of his eye. Through the strands he kept a careful eye on Africa and Lupin. His eyes focused on the wooden bar, the swirls and knots telling a story, but he wasn't interested in a potential history lesson or philosophy from a piece of bar furniture.

Once again he shifted his attention to the group by the door. "What could they be plotting?" He wondered as he waited for his drinks.

"Any thoughts on what's next for our intrepid crew? After we're paid and all. Shopping? Looking for more cargo? "
Eli took a deep breath of smoke, holding the toxins in his lungs for a long while before expelling a grey cloud out the side of the small mule. The wind in his hair, even at this slower pace, was far too relaxing for the situation. The Captain lolled his head to one side, looking over at Monte in a matter of fact way.

"Figured some time on the dirt would do us good... but yes, then it's back to work I imagine." He looked around them as the saloon disappeared behind them and the few small buildings of the town rolled by. "If there's a job worth doing here." He added it as an afterthought - how likely was it that they'd find worthy work here?

The mule rolled on ahead and Harmon's mind went from future work to the job at hand. The schoolhouse was coming up ahead on their left. Here we go, then. One hand absently tapped his thigh, as if the handgun strapped there could have disappeared somewhere along the way, and his eyes started scanning the area for any sign of their contact.

Africa's gaze returned to the gentleman down a few stools down. "I'll have what he's having." She told the bartender.

Her actions turned to his and she shifted with minimal motion to observe that which the stranger observed. 'He sees something there' but she didn't know what or why. Africa wanted to find out.

"Would you join us?" And then that friendly turn on the barstool to make that angle of the body offered a welcoming to the stool to her right, which would put her between crewmate and one who was now one step away from stranger.

The Rooster

The bartender slid the drinks their way. "Hrumph." Barely asked Lupin for his order and then grudgingly got that drink too. He then went back to cleaning the ever dirty bar always keeping the newcomers in sight.

The Schoolhouse

The schoolhouse look almost postcardesque in it's quaintness. It was a faded red building with two stories but it wasn't really bigger then a large house. A sign hung on the front door that read 'use side door'. There was a garage next to it with a light on, dangling in front of the door. A man door was on the side of the school with a small button next to it on the right.

Lupin took his cigarette and lit it with a cheap lighter he had for the longest time. Taking a nice long drag of its enticing vapor he answered Africa to help fill in the gaps, “You don’t want to be plastered. I’m normally the same way. Last time I got that smashed I ended up waking up in the drunk tank at the local police station.” He ordered his drink making sure to keep it simple to avoid having to explain any drinks or taking a chance on getting something he didn’t want. He sipped on the whiskey he had ordered and kept an eye on Africa and the stranger as she offered him a seat.

The whiskey he got was a genuine rotgut variety which had a burn more reminiscent of paint stripper then an oak aged beverage. Reluctantly he paid for the drinks and left a large tip despite the subpar quality of both drink and service. Fortunately his tobacco was of a finer quality which was salvaging his evening. With his taste for liquor spoiled and a severe lack of an exit strategy keeping him from scamming the locals Arsene figured he might as well see what the stranger was up to and encouraged him to join them, “Come on, pull up a seat and tell us about yourself. I’m sure that you have to have an interesting story or two of the goings-on here.”

THE ROOSTER SALOON

Africa looked back to Lupin, a little questioning on her face that only he could see. Surely he realized this stranger was not from here, yet he was 'turning it on'; his demeaner had changed ever so subtly. He'd been a little on an edge, but now he was 'on'.

Something about it seemed real and sincere, yet still she saw a mask. This was perplexing. She sat straight, her natural form of relaxed and ready. Africa turned and smiled, her's was sincere; she didn't have any practiced alternative.

Her drinks had been set in front of her. And now she waited to see how the well practiced stranger took to sipping this odd combination of tea and liquer.

"the world keeps moving on. Please, tell me something of yourself."

"There's not much to tell."
The Companion replied. It didn't seem as if she was overly opposed to the company, even if she hadn't given him a yes or a no in regards to whether it was fine for him to just chat with her.

"I grew up on Sihnon." She admitted as she took a sip from her glass of tea, "I do not remember much of my family, and I moved into the House when I was young, where I began my training." She added, taking another drink from her glass before looking at him.

"After I completed my training, I decided I wanted to see the 'Verse...I could go on, but I am sure it would bore you." The Woman giggled out, waving her hand lightly before she glanced around briefly before turning her attention back to Clarence with a smile. "I imagine that you have more interesting stories, growing up in a place like this, no?"

Monte pulled up and shut down the hover's turbos. As they whined down, he shifted in his seat, looking over the schoolhouse.

"Quaint in a old colored kind of way. I'll follow your lead; be ready for anything to go sideways."

He slid out of the vehicle and waited for Eli and Carrie to exit.

Despite the fact that business was clearly at hand, Carrie kept whistling. Some of it was just to throw up an air of calmness when in reality, she wasn't all that sure about what she needed to be doing with this delivery. As the mule came to a halt and Monte jumped out, she took a long look over the schoolhouse and the surrounding. It seemed a little quiet, but then school probably wasn't a night time affair. Her own experience with official schooling was limited.

"If it's all the same to you, thinkin' I might stay with the cargo. No sense lettin' it get picked just before we deliver, hm?" She looked first to Monte then to Eli. The manner in which she was leaning back against the seat allowed the jacket over her frame to hang open just enough to reveal to the two men that she wasn't going to be sitting unarmed.

"Not too interesting, I can assure you... Kenji reassured the pair, bringing the glass of bourbon to his lip. They parted softly as he tilted the glass enough to let the amber liquid spill over his tongue. He brought the glass close to his chest as he regarded the pair carefully. "I tend to work odd jobs. I received a request about 2 weeks ago to work some salvage. I managed to find a vessel to bring me to this huangliang end of space, I've been here a week or so, looking to get back to civilization. He explained, leaving not a trace of deception.

He took another sip from the glass before resting it next to the tea. He reached for the tea and brought it in. The burn from the alcohol fading from his throat. He then sipped from the cup. The tea playing with the various flavors of the alcohol. Minato Saionji, by the way. Freelancer and part-time salvager. He smiled softly at Lupin and Africa. He turned around to look at the six men, sitting by the door, still wondering what they were plotting.

The Schoolhouse

At the sound of the mule pulling up a curtain moved on the second floor. A minute or two later and the side door popped open and out came an attractive woman in her mid thirties. " Oh you'll have to excuse my dress. I was ready for bed and I just threw this on. This sight for sore eyes must be my shipment of supplies!" She beamed with excitement at the cargo crates. Putting one hand back into the door she flicked a switch and the garage door began to open. "I have plenty of room. I've been waiting for this shipment for months. I'm so glad that Campbell was able to finally find someone to deliver it. Oh I'm sorry hear me rambling. My names Trudy." She made eye contact with Monte and Carrie nodding politely and to Eli she lingers clearly taken by him she extends her hand to him. "It's nice to meet you all."

The Bradford

Clarence hung on her every word now that he wasn't nerved about contracting her for her services he found that her very demeanor was calming him and he knew that he would remember this night for a long time.

"I imagine that you have more interesting stories, growing up in a place like this, no?"
He smiled at the thought that this well traveled and privileged woman would think that but she was so sincere that he really believed she thought that. "Well I find that hard to believe but this was a pretty fun place to grow up. It's not as much fun now being all about work but that's the yoke of responsibility for you. I guess the most interesting thing to ever happen to me was when I was fifteen and I went into the ruins that are several miles to the north on a dare. Long story short I almost got caught up and flayed by raiders but I was able to escape and I have never been back since." He smiled. It always amazed him how a bad memory can become a good one over time.

Elijah gave a nod to Monte as the pair dismounted and turned to Carrie. "Sure thing. Just keep your eyes open and we'll all be enjoying a cold one soon enough." He returned tot he task at hand, ruffling his jacket a little as to casually hide his piece from sight. No use walking into a potentially hostile situation with your entire hand showing - no, an ace up the sleeve was better than four on the table.

Monte by his side, Eli started down to the building itself, eyes darting this way and that, though, his pace slowed when they caught sight of movement on the next floor up. When the side door opened, Elijah halted where he was, still a solid few yards between the pair of them and the woman. She went on, it seemed, and the Captain gave Monte a sideways glance as he twice tried to respond, only to be drowned out about comments on her dress. He couldn't help but smile, silence falling momentarily as the garage door slid open.

"Name's Elijah, Trudy. This here is Monte, and the dove faced one up on the mule is Carrie. It's a pleasure to meet you." The Captain gave a small wave to Carrie to bring the goods down and approached Trudy, hand extended, to make their meeting official. So far, so good.
