A Hard Reyne; A new captain with a new crew

The fall of the goliath Zuggarat did little to change the lives of those imprisoned by quarantine in orbit around Verbena. Shock, anguish, depression, and apathy among the many emotions felt yet quickly brushed aside when the quarantine lifted and life moved on. As it always does life must move on. A rushing torrent of water that throws you over a waterfall or a quiet brook that lazily drifts by soothing and soft.

In orbit of Londinium
Two months after the fall

The Grey Reyne sat docked perfectly with a large commercial skyplex where she had just completed her maiden voyage with her new captain. Her mysterious passengers gone without so much as a thanks for the ride. She sat there waiting. Waiting for the next job to come along and sweep her back into the Black where she belongs, flying free. Her crew though small was determined and the opportunities here on, or directly above, a core world were next to limitless. This is the beginning of a new journey for a new captain and his crew.

Eli was bent over the controls at the bridge, assuring port control that the ship wouldn't be sitting in orbit for too much longer, and then locked in their location and let the ship hover as it will. It'd been a busy morning, an even busier last couple of months, considering the rumours that he'd heard about space travel. Didn't you just float along? Clearly not. It was all conflict this, stowaway that. Speaking of which.

He clocked off, heading out of the bridge, across the small shuttle bay, and down the narrow staircase that led to the bulk of the ship. Their visitor was next on the agenda, the man he'd confined to one of the spare storage room until he had somewhere better to put him. The man had skill, Elijah had been able to admit that - he was on board for almost a week before we realised, taking food as he pleased. It made the Captain look a fool, though Carrie had assure him that no one else had been any the wiser. Their guests, short lived as they'd been, hadn't been too impressed.

"Carrie?!" He called blindly, assuming she'd be in the mess or the engine room. If not, he'd have been surprised.

The Captain made his way up into the living areas, headed for the makeshift prison cell, and removed his gun belt as he walked. Diverting to the kitchen, the Captain placed his belt, and weapon, down on the bench and eyed the pot of coffee that sat across the room. Still hot, he assumed, but alas their wasn't time.

"Carrie, damnit!" The dynamics of the crew had changed a lot in the past two months - it hadn't taken long for the fresh blood Captain to come out of his shell and the crew had fallen together more like a family in no time.

Monte was in the kitchen, fixing up a fresh brew of hot, black java when he heard Eli approach. He sat the pot down and leaned back against the counter. When Eli entered, he nodded but shrugged when the captain asked about Carrie. "Haven't seen her recently. Might be sleeping..."

As Eli turned and left, Monte poured himself a cup and stepped to the doorway, looking back toward the "prison cell."

He was only wearing a knife in his boot, and for some reason, didn't feel that there was a requirement to be packing any more. Sure, the stowaway was an uncertainty, but to go around the ship loaded for bear might draw more distrust on his own behalf. The rest of the crew didn't really know him all that well, either.

A good thing that he and Africa had hit it off so well. Her helping him out of that death chamber, and then their shopping trip together. Both getting hired on to the Rayne; his hopes were improving. There were still things on his mind, but at least he was starting to feel at home. He took a sip and grimaced. Now that's HOT!!
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now

"Carrie, damnit!"
Carrie just so happened to be heading for the kitchen when she heard Eli shouting for her. Her hair was still a little damp, but the shower had been in order after doing some tinkering in her room most of the previous night. "Ya know they have this system in most ships now, called a Comm? Saves the trouble of yellin and losin your voice."

Her voice preceded her appearance in the hall and as she came around the corner, she got a notion that he wanted to deal with the stowaway. Boy that was a load of fun tryin to convince him none of us knew he was here. Hands in her hair, she was attempting a loose braid. The kind that she knew full well would let the shorter bangs end up falling free of said braid and into her face and annoy her all day, but she was doing it anyway.

Within two feet of Eli, the scent of coffee reached her. Her captain wasn't the only one up and about. "But if you insist on yellin, I think you might have a 'captive' audience waiting." A quick tilt of her head was given towards the door holding their stowaway, whom she'd kept at least fed and watered despite Eli's fury. And then there was the appearance of the beginnings of her smile, though she checked it some.

Eli stood cold and quiet in the hallway, narrow eyes staring at her with teeth grinding ever so slightly. Nice shower, hmmm? He had no beef with Carrie, nor anyone else on board - hell, not even their little stowaway - but the last few days had done the man's head in and everything was pissing him off at this point. Without much of a response, the Captain dug out a key on a chain from his pocket and threw it down the hall to her.

"Get his things. All of them. Then meet me in there." He turned then, reaching out to unlock the door of the storage room that had been used as their prison cell for the last month and a half.

The room was dimly lit, a mattress tucked against the back wall and a small table and chair where the man had been given his meals. Elijah didn't mind that - if it turned out this guy was as much trouble as the Captain assumed, a reward would more than pay for the food he consumed while on board as their captive.

"You enjoy your breakfast?" The question was loaded, semi-sarcastic, as Eli took a few steps into the room and closed the door behind him. The bowl they'd delivered earlier that morning, containing little more than gruel, was sitting idle on the small table.

Lupin was sitting on the bed in his cell with little to do but reflect. It was both stupid and risky trying to hitch a free ride like he did but it was still better than the alternative. Well at least he lucked out to run into a captain who had the decency to not only throw him out the airlock but to also bothered to feed him. Then speak of the devil the door opened with one of his jailers.

Lupin smiled at the man’s sarcasm and replied in a fairly cheerful mood, "It was good thank you, just like sister use to make." Normally he'd get up to greet someone out of respect but resisted doing so to avoid startling the man. He took a moment to gather himself and looked the captain in the eye. "Look I know you all probably have plans or a lecture or something. But before you do, I never really got the chance to apologize or explain myself." He looked at the captain and not seeing any signs of disagreement he continued.

"First, thank you, for being so nice. I ran into folks that would have knocked all my teeth out if they were in your situation. And that makes you all good in my book. In fact I wanted to repay you for the hassle and I have a proposal for you too." Taking the advantage Lupin continued with his little spiel while trying to be as sincere to be, which for a man of his profession it really wasn’t the norm. "So here's what I'm thinkin. I answer any questions you have and fallow your orders. Or I'll pay you for all your hassles and stay on board a bit until we get out towards the border. How does that strike you?"

Eli shifted his weight from one foot to another, watching the man carefully, yet remaining silent as he spoke. The thing was, this is what the Captain had hoped for. He had no lecture, no plan, no idea what to do in the first instance with someone who had crawled aboard his ship, uninvited. And this wasn't the first instance - it'd been two months since they'd took to the Black. So he listened, hoping the pair would find a suiting outcome.

"I bet you got plenty to say." He thought for a moment, leaning against the wall by the door, awaiting Carrie's arrival. When she didn't appear in the next few moments, he stared Lupin in the eye, teeth grinding, and nodded.

"Alright. Speak yer piece."

During the entire speil, Eli's teeth ground together almost silently as he thought over the moment he first got wind of someone uninvited on board. He'd found the mans gear before the man himself, a bag stuffed with cash and ident cards and gadgets. From all that, he assumed what kind of person he was dealing with, but finding the revolver had locked those assumptions in place.

The man had finished speaking and the words echoed through Elijah's mind - this wasn't really how he'd expected this to go down, but it was one of the million possible paths he'd theorised about. Follow my orders, he pondered. Seems too easy.

"Forget the 'orders' and the 'payment'... you know, for my 'hassles'... forget all that for now." He took a step forward, not threateningly, but to ensure the man knew that he was to listen up, and to listen good. The soldier was kicking in again, and the Captain's eyes widened a little. It was true, Eli and his own had treated the man well enough - there'd been no violence, a bed to sleep in, warm meals and the occasional shower (under supervision, of course). It was more than a stowaway could have hoped for.

"Tell me, what made you do it? Climbing aboard a busy vessel like ours, uninvited and with little place to hide. What was the rush?"

The brusque, short manner following the key toss was enough to tell Carrie that morning coffee had not yet been had. Her smile stayed in place, as was usual for her, as he headed into the 'cell'. Once Eli was out of sight, she shook her head and used the keys to unlock the small storage in the hall in which the bag she needed to bring was in. Grabbing it, she relocked the storage and bee lined for the kitchen.

The key went into a pocket, the bag onto the table and she forward to the coffee pot. "Thanks for makin the coffee, Monte. Doesn't sound like he's had his." She meant the captain of course, and her thanks was sincere. It was only as she poured the coffee that she realized she hadn't tied off the braid. There was nothing for it now. "Here's hoping he don't pour this on anyone..."

Smiling, she was off again, scooping up the bag and exiting the kitchen. Letting the bag slide to the crook of her elbow, she switched the coffee to the same side as the bag and then opened the door. Before the door was fully open, the smile melted away, her poker face dropping into place.

As the door closed behind her, she took the cup back with her free arm. Then, stepping forward, she held the cup out to Eli who appeared to be looming over their 'guest'. Mentally, Carrie had a couple of ideas when he could have slipped on board, but she wasn't about to offer any of them up as excuses. She wanted to hear why this man had hidden away on the Reyne, of all ships.

Africa climbed out some small chamber in the ship where she had been cleaning filters and keeping moving parts well lubed and frictionless.

She followed along behind the others in her boyish machinist pants and jacket; the broadrimmed tech glasses on her face. A streak of lube along her cheek. Chamberlain liked the Captain's style. Yelling and talking like they were on some ship in some earth that was ocean.

A smile for Monte. Africa had shared her story short and simple with the others for what it was worth. She felt like Monte though was sort of special in one of those ways that can't be stated. It felt good be around these people.

Carrie seemed very willing to teach her all Africa could take about engineering and mechanics. And Africa could take in a lot. The math and science was without any background; but she could mimic, learn and understand the maintenance and repair.

Otherwise Africa worked, stayed in motion except for sleep and mediation. She worked her martial forms from Tai Chi to Yogo to Jeet Kune Do.

Africa stood behind the others, having approached quietly until she smiled at Monte. Then she made just enough shuffle to make sure they knew she was near. No one like sneaky people popping up.

The door slid open a few seconds before Eli finish speaking his piece and he turned to see Carrie entering - as requested, a bag in one hand, and not as requested, a steaming mug in the other. He frowned at her, the man still unacquainted with the way his First Mate could read him, and accepted the mug without a word, but a look that said all he needed to.

As their 'prisoner' began to speak, Eli took a sip of his coffee and the look on his face showed approval. He then extended a hand towards Carrie, gesturing for the bag she had brought in.

Lupin sighed from not wanting to explain himself and the contents of his luggage. He sighed as he began to contribute his half of the informal interrogation. "Honestly," he managed to say while slightly coking on his words "I was running for my life or at the very least my well-being." He spoke at a slower pace carefully choosing each word as if it may be his last. He looked at the bag the woman brought in, "I assume you rummaged through my belongings." His eyes then moved to study the woman’s face before looking the captain in the eyes once more. He knew that with even so much as a cursory glance at his belongings it was going to be a sign he wasn’t legit with half the claims he could make.

So like the nuns kept saying to him in the orpahnage, 'And the truth will set you free.' He knew that there was no lying his way out of this one. "Go ahead and ask whatsoever else you like. I’m sure you got plenty of questions." He inhaled deeply as he leaned back against the wall.

Elijah took another long sip of the coffee in his hand before responding, his eyes moving from their captive to his First Mate, and then back again. He let out a sigh, shuffling his feet a little, before opening his mouth. again.

"For your life? Not being a little melodramatic, are we? Who or what's it that you're running from, Mr...?" The realisation of not knowing the new man's name had only just dawned on the Captain, two months in.

Carrie noted the look in Eli's face at the coffee and inwardly, she smiled. Handing over the bag, her eyes went to their stowaway about the same time the man's eyes looked towards her. For a split second, she worried that the man was about to say something that would indicate she'd known he was there. Mercifully, she was spared that.

Instead, he opened the floor up to questions, any question they, Eli wanted to ask. There were a couple questions she had, like why he'd picked the Reyne of all the ships docked at the Baroness and when exactly he'd managed to slip on board. Eli had the lead though, and if she had to wager, he'd be asking something similar to what she wanted to know.

Monte had moved up behind Carrie and felt Africa behind him. He kept quiet and watched as Eli interrogated the stowaway. He took a step back and stage whispered to Arfrica,

"Curious that both of the last two ships I've been on have had this problem of the stray gaining access and actually get half way through the journey before being found out. We need to be more conscious of guarding our hatches from now on. The next one might not be so agreeable as to allow himself to be contained in a storage room."

Still awaiting a response from his captive, the Captain was interrupted as a loud whirring ping echoed around the ship - an incoming transmission. There was a pause, Eli swore under his breathe slightly, and then he turned to Africa. One hand was held up in front of Lupin now, as if to say 'please, sir, one moment'.

"Gorram port control, I told 'em a million times we shouldn't be sitting here for long." The anger in his tone was genuine, though Elijah wasn't honestly convinced that it was port control pinging them this time. "You two get up there, get them on the horn, and see what the fuss is." His words were to Monte and Africa and he didn't wait for a response, turning back to the captive.

"As you were saying..."

Africa looked to Monte, this wasn't the usual area that she had been given purvue over. Nor Monte for that matter.

Yet when the Captain speaks, the crew does as they are told. She understood that, so while the situation wasn't typical in their short time together, she replied, "Yes sir." and headed for the bridge. She wanted to tell him that to her it seemed that the man was being truthful. There were no tell-tale indicators of lying. Yet that would undermine the Captain's position, that he needed to be told that.

---
When on the bridge Africa sat, looked over the instruments, then answered the comm.
"Grey Reyne here."

Monte followed Africa up to the bridge, almost trotting to hurry. Figures it would be almost as far to the bridge as any other location in this ship. Back to the stairwell, up to the upper deck, through the shuttle bay and finally arriving at the control center of the Reyne.

As they arrived, he slid into the co-pilot seat and waited for the response.

Lupin sat quietly as he waited for the captain to finish doing his skippering, "My name is Lupin, Arsene Lupin." He combed his fingers through his hair as he continued, "I had to get off the station and away from an appalling man named Cady. You see, he was under the impression I was in ownership of some money that belonged to him and his reputation has it where I very likely would be in the infirmary, and that's if he got his money back." He looked the captain dead in the eye and finished, "And in my line of work when someone says for their life we tend to mean it."

Elijah took an unnecessarily noisy, and long, swig from his mug while he listened to the tale unfold before him. He wasn't a seasoned spacer, for sure, but the Captain knew what kind of man he was dealing with. He assumed, anyway. When the short explanation was finished, Eli sent raised eyebrows towards Carrie before turning back to Mr Lupin.

"It's an interesting tale, no one can argue, Mr Lupin." He nodded, letting the mug sit down quietly on the table as he unzipped the bag Carrie had handed him. It was the weapon that had concerned the Captain at first, when the stowaway had been initially found scurrying around down below. The rest of his 'belongings' were of concern, of course, but it was the unchecked weapon that infuriated Elijah.

He sat the bag on the table, producing the revolver, and very slowly went about ensuring it was empty and set to a setting that suited their current situation - surrounded by a deadly vacuum. He then removed an spare bullets from the bag, placing it all on the table, and stared down at contents of the bag. Cash, thieving tools, likely forged ident cards, a revolver. He felt as if some spy thriller had thrown itself aboard the Reyne and he'd caught the lovable scoundrel.

"But you chose my ship, of all on offer. Why was that?" He followed the question by throwing the bag towards the man where he sat - contents and all, save for the revolver - and took a few more steps forward, now standing over Arsene.
