Darkness abides where rocks smash into one another. In reality, the distance between these rollicking juggernauts is immense and the likely hood of collision is merely infrequent. Distance makes objects harder to see over these vast distances, and yet, there is always that slim, coincidental chance that one's eyes and tracking device happens to be aimed in just the right direction at just the right time to catch that curious glint off the barest of reflective surfaces at just the right time to spot it even from such major distances.

Such was the case for Jim-Bob Gellispee, one rather unbeknown asteroid miner, who one day made the discovery of his life, much to his chagrin. Too bad for him, as this event will be that which drives him to destitution and despair as his life crumbles around him.

For our heroes, it could prove to be the opportunity of a lifetime.

It has been two months since their last paying job and the enthusiasm over being well paid and enjoying the life style that that has brought them is wearing off as the number of digits in their respective bank accounts descends into oblivion. No word has come down from their Patron, and the tension is beginning to tell in their interactions with one another.
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now

We have GOT to get off this rock!

Alex grumbled as he stormed into the hotel room, slamming the door behind him.

No word from Cai and not a single wave about jobs.

He tossed his PDA onto the bed before flopping onto it himself, sighing in frustration.

At least back on the core worlds I could more easily reach contacts. Credits are running out and we need work.

As his PDA hits the bed, it chattered an alert. Checking for a new message, Alex is relieved to find a post from Cai.

An interesting note has come across my desk. Perhaps you have heard of various illicit activities done by one particular individual known to be a notorious ne'er do well. Well, there has been recent rumors that perhaps his lost ship or base have been located. This is, naturally, of extreme discretion. I have made arrangements for your team on a local transport, the Jenny Lynn, berthed at the local port. Locate Sebastian Cavanaugh, the owner. He will have details of job, price negotiable.

Cai sat at his desk, the paperwork spread out in front of him. He studied the list of personnel that might be required for this new job. There was one missing; someone with the necessary skills... I have a pilot, demo, and antiquities guy.

He thumbed open his Cortex tablet and ran a search. There! I thought I had a contact on her. He touched the link to her Wave address and sent out a notice:

Ms. Blaylock, I have a job for you. Contact Sebastian Cavanaugh onboard the Jenny Lynn. He should be standing by at the Boothbay Port. Meet rest of team there. I'll have further details waiting on your arrival.

He then Waved Sebastian to set up the introductions.

The ping of a message coming in to her 'public' Cortex inbox caused a twitch of the corner of Jolene's mouth. Her eyes didn't pull away from her personal handheld to glance at the larger terminal she was standing in front of. No one bothered her, her completely black clothing and her make up trending towards thst same dark shade giving most reason to judge and avod her. It worked in her favor, leaving her free to monopolize the larger terminal. Finally, she had the location ping blocked and she connected her small unit to the larger one and downloaded messages while erasing her tracks as she made them.

Once she had what she needed, she ran one more 'cleaning' program and disconnected. Picking up her bags, she pulled the hood of her dark jacket up and headed for someplace out of the way. Pulling up her messages, she saw the job offer, read over it and only nodded to herself. Time for a change of appearance and then contact and a ride.

Alex's mind snapped out of his sour thoughts when he heard the distinct sound of an incoming wave. He sat up to read the message and allowed himself to smile, if only a little. He sent word back that they'd be there and waggled his PDA in his hand while addressing his cohorts.

Looks like we're finally going to get off this rock and on a job at that. I'm headed to the port in ten minutes. if you're coming, be ready to go by then.

He wasted no time gathering up his belongings in preparation to leave.

Xavier hefted up his pack and grinned a bit at Alex, Lead the way boss. The large man was ready and willing to go. He looked over at Erideth, You comin' too lil' lady? He made a quick note to check the contents of his bags and to take a quick inventory of his arsenal before they left.

Erideth was sitting back on any piece of furniture she was able to claim for herself, legs kicked up and cleaning one of her guns in her lap. At the question, she sighed and nodded, putting together her gun again while she said to Alex,

I don't know why you trust that guy...or maybe, we shouldn't trust the guys who work for 'im. We got screwed last job y' know. We came up with three chests, they only rescued one...and claimed the rescue as their own.

On another note, you still never checked whatever I shoved into my pockets.

She got up, gun back together and put into her holster. Picking up her jacket, she pulled it on with a simple flourish around herself before following along.

Sebastian sat at the bridge console onboard the Jenny Lynn when the Wave came through. He read through the message from Cai, outlining the personnel being presented and the information that they needed to secure the prize. He shook his head and whistled out loud.

A distinctive harsh voice filtered in from the Ops room behind him. "Problems, boss?" Corky poked his head in through the hatchway to inquire what his Captain had found out.

"No, Corky. Nothing that concerns us. We'll have a number of passengers arriving soon. Might as well do preflight checks on the engines. I suspect we'll be taking off as soon as everyone is onboard." He stood and made his way down the stairwell to the forward cargo/passenger bay and unlatched the hatch. Swinging it open, he stepped out and took his place to await the arriving team.

Not long afterward, Ms Blaylock arrived, followed shortly by the three other passengers. Sebastian nodded as he verified their IDs and waved them onboard.

"There are three passenger cabins on this deck. My mechanic and I are bunked up on the crew deck. Go ahead and get yourselves settled in and come up to join us. I have the particulars that I will share with you then."

Three cabins... four people and I'm the odd one out it would appear.

Hazel eyes studied each person, captain, mechanic and the other three with whom she'd be traveling. Several slow blinks, perusing their faces, builds and clothing. A faint twitch at the corner of her mouth gave indication to some private amusement, though not at their expense. She simply looked overdressed. Her dark hair was pulled back half way, neatly but not severely; subtle, neutral toned make up; business casual dress, freshly pressed.

After no one seemed to be forthcoming in regards to the rooming arrangements, she inhaled through her nose. "Well, three rooms means two of us will be sharing. I don't mind sharing, but I'm afraid I won't be up for co-ed." Leaving it at that, she began to gather up her things, having set them down when she'd arrived first.

The towering man looked over at Alex and Erideth mentioning to them, We've bunked together before... he motioned to Alex, I dunna care either way though. He gathered his things and looked at the cabins, It's also a matter of trust too, I reckon. He looks at which cabin seems to have the most room, because he's going to need it either way.

Erideth looked towards her two compatriots and frowned, looking towards the new woman afterwards and shook her head. She smirked a little before she said,

Since you two are used to sharin', you two get t' share. I'll take the last one.

She was always happy having her own space, that she can keep free of people she didn't exactly trust yet.

Aye. We've shared much less... comfortable accommodations before. The women should have their own bunks for this trip.

He smiled politely to all the new faces with a nod and an offered hand to any who'd accept the gesture.

I imagine we'll be needing to know what to call each other. Name's Alex.

Jo felt a tad satisfied with how things fell into place. It wasn't beyond her comprehension that none of the three would trust her right off, and she had immediately eliminated the co-ed bunking option. A quiet room, without anyone asking what it was she was 'constantly doing' on her hand held was exactly what she'd seen coming.

Two of the three seemed far more interested in claiming a room than actually meeting anyone. Odd one out indeed... The third at least introduced himself. Not that long social chats were her thing, but if they were going to be working together, Alex was right: they ought to at least introduce themselves.

"Jolene." She took and shook Alex's hand, having to look upwards as usual. She wasn't much taller than the other woman really. Maybe an inch or two, but not more than that.

Beyond giving her name, Jo always felt awkward. "And seeing as my choices for a room are down to one..." There wasn't as much annoyance in her voice as any other passenger might have expressed, particularly having been the first to board. Rather, it was a statement, benign in tone and expression both as her attention and hand moved away from Alex.

The gruff man looked down at the new woman and nodded, Xavier. he bluntly stated, not always one for small talk. He grabbed his bag and Alex's and packed them into their shared cabin, ducking himself into the room.

Erideth was usually wary about giving out her own name, but still gave out her own in return.

Erideth, or just Eri. It's easier. trying not to give any more information than that.

The thrusters cough and then rumble into life as the ship started to shake itself awake. Moments later and the comm came on. Standby for lift. We'll be in the Black in a short while and then heading to Greenleaf. For those interested in watching the last of Whittier, there are viewing ports in the common area as well as drinks.

The small freighter moved slow at first and then with a great leap, headed up into the higher atmosphere. Minutes tick by as dark, stormy clouds slide by until they achieve upper altitude and then into the darkness of lower orbit.

The view wasn't what interested Erideth about the words that came over the comm; if you'd seen as many lifts as she had, one more wasn't going to be that spectacular. With her introductions aside, and a quick toss of her bags into the room that she was claiming, she went to go get herself a couple of drinks.

Jolene nodded to those still standing and opted to find the room left to her. Nothing fancy, but she'd been in far worse. Stowing her gear, pausing only to check the security locks on her hand held, she meandered out of the room and made her way to the common area. Perusing the drink options, she kept away from anything of the alcoholic nature, selecting instead to stick with water. Tea would have been her preference, but that seemed like it might be asking a little too much right away.

Idly, she moved to one of the windows and watched the stars. None of them twinkled as they were want to do when one looked up at them planetside. It was a simple phenomenon to understand, but it was still intriguing to see the difference.

With the pleasantries all seen to, and Xavier having taken Alex's pack for him, he made his way to the common area as well.

He didn't bother with anything to drink as he found himself a seat and waited, completely disinterested in the view the ports had to offer. His job took him into the black often enough that such things had become mundane.

The job, however, DID interest him. The job always did.
