The EVA Suit was surprisingly warm, it was well insulated. Oxygen levels were reading normal. The wind picked up as snow and ice whipped through the area. Visibility was low, but he could somewhat make out a small structure about 2 miles away. The snow was about 2 feet deep and rising. Seems a blizzard was approaching.

Monte took a bead on the structure before it disappeared into the fog of snow, checking the compass in his suit's HUD. He grunted and started the long trek toward what he hoped was his best chance at survival. He slogged one step at a time, pushing hard against the wind and the deep snow.

After what seemed like hours, Monte made it to a small log cabin that had smoke pouring out of the chimney. The wind was picking up and he felt heavy resistance from it with every step he took.

Monte struggled those last few steps as he finally reached the shelter of the overhang of the cabin's porch. He brought up one armored glove and pounded one, twice on the door frame. The force reverberated through his suit so even to him it sounded booming.

Monte thought he heard the faint sound of a shotgun being pumped. The door opened and Monte had a double barrel shotgun in his face. Suddenly Monte felt light headed, whether from the lack of oxygen in his suit or fatigue. Monte's body couldn't take it anymore as he fell face first to the ground with a thud. Sleep never felt so good.

Monte woke up. Could have been hours, days.. Who knew. He was dressed in his old clothes and laying in a warm bed underneath a heavy blanket. The door to the old fashioned room was open and the aroma of chicken noodle soup was in the air. On a nearby chair was the EVA Suit with Monte's personal effects.

Monte swung his feet over onto the floor before the wave of vertigo swept over him and he just managed to catch himself with one arm before collapsing again. He laid his head down onto his knees and awaited the passing discomfort. After a few minutes, he managed to stand and walk slowly to the doorway.

"Hallo? Anyone out there? Smells good, I must say." As he pushed himself past the threshold, he thought to himself, Sorry mess you got yourself into. Well, not quite by yourself, you realize. Had help there somewhere.

An older man with gray hair and glasses was stirring the soup over a cast iron stove while his loyal dog, who seemingly enough was just as aged as he was laid at his side. The old man nodded without looking at him. "Grab a seat. Soup will be done soon." He gestured to a small circular wooden table with two seats facing each other. The house was a small, two bedroom cabin. kitchen, bathroom. Very basic. It was very simply decorated, but most noticeable was a picture frame hanging over the table. It was of the old man, albeit much younger with a woman and a boy standing near each other on a mountain overlooking a vast view while smiling.

He started to pour the soup into bowls as the steam slowly rose from it and placed a spoon in each. The old man grabbed the bread from the oven and placed it on the center of the table. He then took the bowls of soup and placed one near Monte and one near himself before taking a seat.

"Let us pray." The old man bowed his head, disregarding if Monte did the same.

"Lord. We thank you for this food. We pray that it gives us the strength to get through the day. We are thankful for the blessings to our body. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen."

The old man ate a spoonful of soup, savoring it while looking over at Monte. He placed the spoon back down. "So stranger. Tell me your story. We don't get many newcomers to St. Albans. Especially out in the mountains."

Monte walked carefully over to the table and sank into the other chair. The little bit of strength that he had mustered in order to get out of bed had finally run out, and he could feel the pain of an empty stomach beginning to ache. He gathered a piece of bread and the bowl close in and took a bite before looking up at the old man.

"Name's Monte. I was a drive monkey on a ship and got shanghaied. Some quack doctor thought I had volunteered to be infected. Ended up " he stared up at the ceiling "in orbit but the ship was set to self-destruct. I managed to eject on a lifeboat and crashed a couple miles from here. Barely managed to make it to your door."

A feeble smile broke through Monte's dark visage, and he delved back into the warm soup, working through the grumblings of his abdomen.

The two chattered for hours. Mostly small talk about past experiences, nothing too heavy. It was a relaxed light hearted chat. The smell of rich tobacco filled the area as the old man puffed on his pipe and even offered Monte a cigar. The old man, or Elad as he was named got up and headed to bed for the night. Night came fairly quickly on St. Albans as Monte found himself back in bed as well. He felt full from the meal and the most relaxed he has felt in a long time.

Monte drifted off to sleep very comfortably.

Suddenly Monte woke up to a yell and what sounded like vomitting. There was a loud thud and then a crash coming from Elad's room.

Monte stirred himself out of a deep slumber as echoes rattled around in his dreams. As his eyes open, he heard a crash from the other room. Scrambling out of bed, he made his way to the old man's room to investigate, hesitant at what he might find there.

The old man laid on the floor while violently shaking. He began to gurgle liquid in his throat, gasping for air. Monte saw that his intestines were spilling out of his mouth. He looked ar you for help, almost telling you with his eyes to put him out of his misery.

Monte stopped in his tracks at the sight of the old man. Then he fell down on his knees before him, tears coming to his eyes. "I'm sorry, man. They did this to me, I'm a pariah. A carrier of some Alliance demon weapon. I can only relieve you of this pain."

He reached down and took the man's neck in both of his hands, compressing his larynx around the remainder of the intestines coming up from inside, choking the man even further, until the eyes rolled up and the man's feeble attempts to fight him off ceased.

He took a few minutes to compose himself before he could pick up the body and place it back on the bed, and wrap the bedding over it, covering it up. Then he stood and walked out of the room, pulling the door closed behind him.

"Too bad no one is around to do the same for me."

Bright lights began to shine through the windows, causing you to feel pain in your head as you were blinded. The ground also began to tremble as the cabin started to collapse all around you.

Monte made a mad dash toward the front door, ignoring the freezing cold outside. He burst through the door and collapsed past the building's porch.

A hole in the ground swallowed him up. He felt his flesh being ripped apart, piece by piece. A bright red light kept flashing as he was being shredded into pieces.

The red light wouldn't stop flashing.
