Monte cursed softly as the ticker dropped another digit. He hurried back over to the surviving scientist, and knelt, lifting the man's head and trying to clear his throat.

"Is there a way to shut down the self destruct? Is there an override? "

The mans guts came out of his mouth into Montes hands as he started to seize.

Frustrated, Monte laid the man's head back on the floor. Shaking, he stood and looked at the console in consideration. Self destruct. Counter is on the console, but the device could be anywhere. Engineering, here on the bridge, somewhere mid-ship. He let out a sigh and then approached the console.

"Okay, let's try this first." He studied the controls, looking for any command override or to determine the location of circuitry for the self-destruct.

Monte was able to access the back up system on one of the consoles. A layout of the ship appeared before him with a symbol of a phoenix in the corner. The engine room and a small hallway adjacent to it that appeared to house escape pods caught his eye.

Monte took a moment to run through the data logs looking for information on the drug testing that had been done, and printing that out to the output device next to the pilot's seat. He ripped that last sheet off in time as the timer started pinging. Turning swiftly on his heal, he headed for the engineering and the escape pod closest.

Monte found his way to engineering down a hatch in the hallway he just came from. Once he reached the bottom, he realized how eerie it was that the engine was silent. To the right was the main engine room and to the left were a series of lockers and escape pods.

Monte tears open the locker doors, looking for anything that could be useful before opening the hatch to the first 'pod.

One of the lockers contained a EVA Suit, Another contained all of Monte's belongings. The rest were empty with an exception of a set of overalls and a broom.

The door to the small circular pod slid open. It contained a small window and control panel. The monitor to the control panel read that it was offline.

Monte threw his belongings into the 'pod and hurriedly donned the EVA Suit Just a precaution to being out in the Black. He left the helmet and gloves off for the moment, to give him better visual and fine digital control. He placed the helmet and gloves next to the seat inside the pod.

He checked the door panel to see if there was an "Activate" control before climbing on board and checking the console for activation controls and possible distress beacon.

The words System Lock flashed on the screen. There appeared to be a terminal beneath the monitor that he could pull open to reveal the wiring and circuits of the pod.

Monte glanced back at the hatch ensuring that it was secure before pulling out the terminal. He started running the leads from the main panel back to the docking clamps looking for a way to break the connection and free the pod from the main ship's system circuits. There should be an override to the lockdown.

Monte saw a small unlabeled yellow lever and a small unlabeled red lever that were hidden underneath the wires.

Crap Monte thought. And me without a coin to flip. Ah, well. Out of the fire... He takes the yellow level and flips it over.

As the yellow lever was pulled, fuel began to spill out of the pod nto space as a red light flashed on the console.

Monte frantically shoved the yellow lever back. He wiped his forehead and sighed. Then he pulled the red lever.

The fuel stopped pumping out, the monitor indicated that you had a 1/2 tank of fuel left. Once you pulled the red lever, you felt the escape pod buckle and spun wildly out of control away from the ship. A voice began to speak over the intercom, and also appeared on the monitor. "Warning. Emergency over-ride activated. Pod initation and blast cycle not completed. Unable to stabilize."

As Monte flew away from the ship, he saw a symbol of a Phoenix on the side of the ships hull. Suddenly the ship imploded as there was a bright flash. Then came a fireball of power that raced towards Monte. Pieces of debris and a ring of flames exploded in his direction causing the Pod to tremble and rock from the power. A jolt caused Monte to hit his head on the roof of the pod, causing extreme pain and then darkness. He was out cold.

Monte slowly came back to reality as he looked around his surroundings. His head was throbbing and he saw himself spinning through space. The only things around were distant stars. The console began to flash with the words 'Warning: Oxygen levels at 10%'

Monte shook his head to try to clear the loud ringing. He pinched his nostrils close and blew to equalize pressure in his ears. As the warning light caught his eye, he grunted and settled into the pilot's seat. Gazing over the controls, he looked for stabilization controls.

The pods controls were damaged during the emergency over-ride from the ship. Monte drifted Aimlessly for hours, watching as the Oxygen levels slowly ticked down. The pod began to get hot and the air was heavy. It was hard to breathe. Monte felt light headed and passed out. Several hours later he awoke from the Pod rumbling. He was entering the Atmo of a bright white colored planet. The exterior of the Pod was engulfed in a red fireball as it slammed into the snow below. The pod rested in a 10 foot crater of ice and snow as smoke slowly rose to the sky from the entry.

Monte sat up, head pounding from being buffeted about during re-entry. Is it re-entry if I haven't been here before? Matter of fact, where might 'Here' be? He crawled over the console, looking for any tell-tales. Unfortunately, the power was gone, and the console dead. He sighed and climbed up to the exit hatch. Realizing his misfortune, he cursed and dropped back down. He patted down his suit, looking it over. Good thing these suits are durable. He picked up the helmet, wedged into one corner of the pod. Sliding it on, he twisted it securely tight and began to reascend to the hatch.

He struggled with the manual latch, finally getting it to pop open followed by a gust of wind driven snow blowing through the opening. Pulling himself up, swinging his leg over the threshold, Monte managed to get out of the hatch and dropped to the frozen ground below. He stood for a moment, feeling the wind tug against his suit while he checked the internal readouts for oxy level and ambient temperature. About six hours of air; temp is cold... but not sub zero. I'll need to find shelter, food, water...

He stood and looked around him.
