Anders Horvath had found work aboard a small scavenger ship known as the 'Siren's Call'. It was steady work. They would mostly scrap from abandoned ships and junk yards and sell it for a profit. The trick was to avoid any Alliance entanglements, for if caught it could mean the loss of the ship and jail time. If an Alliance inspection ever did occur, they would be legally registered as a transport vessel and have a forged passenger manifest history to prove it. After a few months on the ship due to his ability as a 'Jack of All Trades", he was promoted to First Mate. Captain Darius Silver had rid himself of his last first mate due to his constant drunkenness and inability to follow orders. Captain Silver was a fair man, strict, but fair. He treated his crew well. 2 Square meals a day and a bunk. What else could you ask for? Horvath was sleeping in his bunk when a male's voice's chimed in on the com against the wall in his room. "You better get to the Bridge. Captain needed you 5 minutes ago." |

From general hand, to corsair, to full-fledged pirate, all the way down to a glorified junker, Ah such is this beautiful life. All things considered Anders was considering his semi-retirement a rousing success, he was comfortable on the Siren's Call and even more comfortable now that he was first mate, didn't hurt that Captain Silver was a good guy and that the work was steady. Now this whole wake up calls by random crew members while a man was trying to get his well earned beauty rest that wasn't so comfortable. "Oh sure wake up from a dead sleep, teleportation through space and time required," Anders grumbled as he swung his feet over the edge of the bunk, "Like I'm some sort of authority figure or something." He chuckled at his own joke as he wiggled his toes one hand digging under the bunk for his boots. Some hopping and cussing later he was at the com, "Be right there, well not right there but around," he paused thinking of how nice a cup of coffee would be, Eh no caffeine for the wicked, "Be there in a flash." He let go of the com button and ducked out of his room, moving at the odd loping gate of a seasoned shipdweller in a hurry, heading directly for the bridge, Captain says quick I suppose I shouldn't indulge, though he did shoot the galley a hungry glance on the way. Anders swung onto the bridge, realizing a bit late that he still looked like a man fresh from a bunk, disheveled, hair sticking up, shirt untucked, and suspenders down, Damn I'm the dashing authority figure ain't I? he made an attempt at straightening himself out, "You rang Cap'n?" Captain Silver stood on the bridge, looking out of the helm window into the black. Captain Silver was in his late fifties with a weathered look of experience about him. Don't let his age fool you though, as he can still brawl with the best of them. Anders didn't know much about the Captain as he was a fairly private person, all business. He turned and faced Anders. "Anders. We have a proximity alert indicating that there is a ship up ahead. Scans indicate that their engines are offline and they haven't responded to our hails. We could use a whole ship to salvage and really get us out of the red. It's been slim pickings lately. Take 4 of the crew with you and see if there is any presence on board. If not, we will pick it clean. We will be docking with it soon." The Siren's call wasn't much to look at. It was salvaged from a junk yard, repaired with scrap and some stolen engine parts and with some good old fashioned know how, it was up and running. The job of the engineer was pretty strenuous because of how the ship was constantly breaking down. Mr. Mack took his job serious. He has a cot in the engine room and literally lives down there. Mr. Mack rarely eats with the crew, grabbing leftovers and eating by himself near the humming of the engine. Mr. Mack is known to have a temper, especially when others interfere with his work. With no weapons and little armor, it had to rely on maneuvering and speed to get out of tight situations. At the helm was a pilot named Lars Skarsgard. Most of the crew call him 'Lemon' for his fondness of lemon juice in every meal. He is a respected pilot and knows how to steer the ship well. The ship itself had approximately 10 Crew and that was at capacity. The Sirens Call slowed it's thrusters as it approached a medium sized transport vessel. A transport ship of that size typically carries anywhere from 10 to 20 passengers. |

"Right away cap'n, I'll have a boarding crew waiting at the docking bay in two shakes." Anders said throwing the captain a small salute before turning to the com, "Attention deck crew, I need four volunteers in suits, ready for salvage work, and at the docking bay ASAP." he paused, thinking for a second, "those who volunteer get a day to sleep in, and I'll buy you a round when we get home." Anders left the deck with a short wave and headed towards the docking bay at the same casual jog that he used to get to the bridge his boots druming out a steady rhythm against the metal floors, his voice began to rise in an old sailors song, a ritual he always started when beginning work, " Now we are ready to head for the Horn, Way, ay, roll an' go!" He was still singing as he reached the docking bay, first of course no surprise there, he shrugged continuing the song as he went through the procedures of putting on his atmo-suit, he momentary stopped as the creeping sense of danger flashed in his mind and the urge to go gather his gun, but he wrote it off as paranoia. Aint a pirate no more old man, no need for the cutlass on a junk run. He continued the process of donning the suit, and the resumed song." Take yer hands from yer pockets and don't suck yer thumbs, to be rollickin' Randy Dandy-Oh." To the casual observer the suit seemed to appear on him as if by magic, an entire life time of experience in this sort of thing lent a level of proficiency, didn't hurt that his suit was fairly well on its way to having being customized, he didn't own it of course but he'd claimed it as his months ago even before he was first mate and began altering it to his own preferences. As he finished he was again assailed by the drive to take up arms, a soldiers habit but it bothered him none the less, instead his voice rose off key and a bit to flat to be truly good drawing the finish to his song, " We're outward bound for Vallipo Bay,get crackin', m' lads, 'tis a hell o' a way!" |

Four members of the crew, Jenkins, Brown, Chen-Tsu and Donovan began suiting up in their EVA. They were good folk. Reliable men, knowing how to get the job done. Suddenly, Lemon's voice came over the docking bay com. "Anders. I am picking up a secondary ship on radar. It is near our target. Stand by for further information." Through the airlock hatch window, Anders could see two ships in the distance. One was floating slowly and in control, while the other was spinning lifelessly which indicated no power. Upon closer inspection, the ship that was spinning and intended for scrapping had the words 'Horizon' imprinted upon the side of the hull. Lemon attempted to hail Glory. "Unidentified Vessel, this is the Siren's Call. Do you require assistance?" Edited by loneviking, Jan 31 2013, 12:28 PM.

Anders greeted each of the crew as they came in, a nod, maybe a good morning depended on who it was and how quick they got there, last one in got some good natured chiding, "You move any slower this bay is gonna be damn cold by the time you get that EVA on."
Anders head snapped around to the window like he'd been struck, Well hello bad feeling I was thinking you were just bad memories tugging at my back, his eyes locked on the other ship. "I got.." he didnt' finish the thought, bad luck to say that ever, you know better, "twenty credits on this being a two'fer, boys what do you think?" His brain was screaming at him, GUN GUN GUN, GO BACK TO YOUR DAMNED ROOM YOU DUMB RUTTING FOOL AND GET YOU GORRAM GUN!! Anders ignored his own thoughts instead he just went to the supply rack and grabbed up one of the big pry bars, it wasn't a gun but it was something it quieted his thoughts a bit, "Knowing our luck it'll be a day of forcing doors and haling lines." Siren's call drifted closer to Glory and the Horizon. The 4 members of the crew were fully suited up as they awaited further instructions from Anders. Lemon chimed in on the com. "Stand by for boarding.." Captain Silver's voice then came over the com. "Anders. We are going to board with a vessel that has a medical situation. Jenkins and Brown are going to enter the ship and provide medical assistance with the advanced med pack. Once we dock and seal with the airlock you are to disengage in a seperate shuttle with Chen-Tsu and Donovan and connect to the Horizon. You are to take the ship by all means necessary. Everyone is to be armed for their entries. Take a torch with you to get through the airlock door in case it does not open." Captain Silver really sounded like he needed this ship, as if his life depended on it. <<Continue in 'One Step Behind'>> |
