<<From 'A Pretty Penny'>>

The ground had shook for longer than any of them liked to think about, a huge chunk of the dense jungle literally going up in flames before them. The adventurers, blown off their feet, were able to recover just in time to see the next chain of explosions ripping through the ship before them. Erideth and Alex could only watch on as their comrades were no doubt devoured by the flames that tore through the huge wreckage.

"Gone... just... like that." Alex remained silent, standing a little way back from where Erideth was, the enormous blaze before them sending eerie shadows splintering off into the wilderness around them. And then something moved.

"I don't..." There were no words, so Erideth remained silent. From the flames, Alex strewn across his shoulders, came the hulking figure of Xavier. His head, now totally bald, was blackened in patches where the hair had been singed off. Around his body, small pockets of fire with still simmering on his clothing. But he was alive, and he was moving. And he had Alex.

"Just stand there, alright? Don't come help or... nothin'!" Xavier surged forward, dropping Alex down as softly as possible, and then started to work on the small flames licking up his side. The others ran forward to greet them, helping the mountain of a man and checking to see if Alex was ok.

A brief discussion followed in the shadows of the great roaring fire - there was no way the artifacts they had come for could have survived the explosion. Hell, event he thugs might have gone down in the chaos.

"And hey, 'least we got a ride home." Erideth nodded off to the side, the glint of not-so-burning metal shining through the trees off to their right. The small vessel was small, unguarded, and already powered up. Even with just the four of them, getting her up and out of there wasn't going to be an issue.

Only ten minutes or so had gone by and the small party was aboard. Xavier and Erideth managed to clear their way through the ship, ensuring there was no hidden surprises, and then the group was on the fly. Getting back to Ganders Ridge would be a piece of cake.

What their dealer, Cai, would have to say, that was another story.

"One hurdle at a time." Alex whispered as they took to the sky.

After placing down Alex in the small ship the large man glanced around, grabbing a rag to wipe his head clean. He looked at the other two people with him, So ladies, can either of you fly this crate? He then looked down at Alex, If you're a doc, then you might want to check on Alex, he took a pretty bad hit back there.

He slumped down in a corner, grumbling a bit and checking what's left of his gear, then that detonator clock that he disabled back on the ship, checking it over for clues as to where it might have come from or any minor details that could show who set them up.

As the small ship elevated over the wreckage, giving a fine few of the collapsed wreckage and burning jungle below, Alex Guirnan offered Xavier an unimpressed grunt from the front of the ship, her hands wrapped skillfully around the flight controls. The ship then jumped forward suddenly as she accelerated toward civilisation. The sudden movement knocked Alex back into consciousness the first sensation was the smell of burning and smoke which clung to everything nearby.

Down on the ground, on the opposite side of the valley, four unseen troopers made their way through the dense jungle and away from the expanding fires. The man leading up the rear turned around to catch sight of the vessel as it soared away. "Hey Sarge, ain't that your ride?" he asked with a grin. "Stow it." came the response, and the men continued on in silence.

The flight back to Whittier only took a few hours. The ship was fast, and light. The adventurers searched every nook and cranny of the ship, but found nothing of any use. There was something to be said for military style efficiency, certainly got things done. They lay down in a dis-used quarry a short distance from the town, the engines dropping to a low whine before falling silent.

Alex tossed Xavier the keys and flashed him a grin. "What now?" she asked.

Erideth hated that she didn't get to grab anything in the ship...ANYTHING at all. Even one crate would have been good. As Guirnan got into the pilot's seat and took off, Erideth swayed slightly and gave the woman a glare.

She let the woman fly to own, and growled a little at the landing as well before she said to Xavier...to whom the keys were thrown, Give me the gorram keys. I'm not lettin' her fly this thing again...and I can fly circles around the piss poor job she did.

She then looked at the unconscious Alex, ...And I ain't leavin' until I get some good money either.

The large man looked at the two women near the pilots seat and when Erideth glares at him he does what any sensible man would do, give the woman what she wants, in this case, the keys.

Regarding Erideth's comments he just shrugged, I ain't the one to be askin' about money. Gotta ask my friend here...

Erideth took the keys and slid them into her pocket before she turned to look through the ship again. This time she wanted a good idea on it's size, and capabilities. She looked for available cargo space, as well as anything that looked like it was in disrepair. Never want your ship to fall out from under you when you're out there somewhere.

The large man took a good look at his friend Alex and then noticed that the field medic seems to have passed out, Thinkin' you can get us to a doc, there Erideth? Ours seems to have gone into shock.

In the few moments that Erideth spent looking over the ship, she found a lot of empty space. The ship was a converted skimmer, wouldn't break atom but could certainly get you where you were going. The thrusters and framework had been upgraded, enough so that the small ship would take a few punches. The former cargo bay had been stripped, instead each side was lined with 10 seats and dozens of oddly shaped compartments, now empty of their matching contents. Nothing seemed to be in any state of disrepair, nor was it going to be winning any ship of the year contests anytime soon. It was however the external review of the ship which finally won her approval, as she noted a small, intentional hidden turret concealed under the ships cockpit. What it fired though, she had no idea.

When she turned catch what Xavier had said, she was able to spot the slowly shrinking figure of Alex Guiran in the distance, bag over on shoulder, all full of swears and mutters of wasted time and opportunities.

Erideth nodded her head after the shrinking form of the other woman,

I take it you mean her. We're right close to town too, might be better off gettin' a doc here rather then takin' a spin out somewhere new. When we get a chance too, I wanna see what this here baby has to shoot.

Xavier nodded to the woman in the pilot seat, Hey, I'm just the muscle, Alex here's the brain, so I'm guessin' if you know where to go, that's where we should go. The large man checking on the passed out ringleader of the small band.

Erideth looked at the unconscious Alex and thought a little before crossing her arms and smirking,

Well muscle, you better start usin' it. I ain't gonna be able to carry him. We're parked just outta town too. We'll find a doc there.

Erideth led the big man first off the ship, locking up after them, then out of the quarry. She wasn't sure what she was going to do for money now, and quietly spent the walk to town thinking about that.

The trio made the short journey into town without much hassle, the path from the quarry was clear but unused, at least for now. The hustle and bustle of the nearing town soon became apparent, as the buzz of machinery, vehicles and other ships idling could be heard in the distance.

As they arrived in the small town itself, a mix match of oddly shaped and designed buildings, they made their way down a side alley and out onto the dusty main street. The sight of Erideth and Xavier carrying the unconscious Alex between them was enough to draw a wave of whispers and pointing from those nearby.

An elderly man wearing and old style bowling hat at an odd angle, and sporting an impressive moustache spotted them from across the street. Suddenly he broke into a run, headed toward them and waving an arm. At first he approached the half burnt, half cooked figure of Xavier. "My dear boy, come straight from hell or did you have time to stop for lunch!" he exclaimed, followed by a warm laugh.

His attention then shifted to the unconscious Alex. He reached out to check the mans pulse, pausing halfway as a grunt from Xavier made him think better. "Your friend here needs a doctor, and I, well….." he trailed off, looking down to his feet.
"Doctor is such a 'fancy' word."

Xavier smirked at the man and coughed slightly as the older man come over to check on him and his comrades. The large man laughed slightly, Yeah, I's born and raised in hell, it's how we brought my friend here back from the brink. He looked at Erideth with a shrug, Well, it's fancier word than any that would describe the two of us, I'm thinkin'. Lead the way ol' timer. He knew he looked like hell, but for him he didn't really care.

The old strange laughed merrily along with Xavier as he joined them in helping Alex across the half empty street. "One should never look down their nose too hard." He said happily, leading them into a particularly run down old hotel. There was no one on the desk, a fact the man took advantage of as he leaned across the desk and grabbed himself a set of keys.

A few minutes later they had Alex resting, not exactly comfortably, but at least the bed itself was flat and looked to have been cleaned sometime this month. "Out cold." the man had stated quietly after his quick check up. He turned around, rummaging around his pockets before pulling out a small, transparent, plastic bag filled with a grey dust.

"Oughta do the trick." he stated with a hopeful sigh, holding the bag under Alex's nose and letting the man inhale a small amount., before looking over to Xavier and Erideth. "Normally that works." he said, offering the two a shrug.

With a choking cough Alex woke up. The first attempts at moving were met with every bone and joint in his body, some of which he didn't even know he had, suddenly shocking him back to reality with a whole new wave of pain.

He groaned and blinked at the old man and what remained of the band of empty handed treasure hunters.

Errgghh.. What happened? Where are we?

Erideth looked down at Alex and pointed out,

You owe me money, and we managed to pick up a ship along the way. was the simple answer she gave, crossing her arms across her chest.

Xavier looked down at Alex with a coy grin, Glad ya survived it too there Alex. We got you to a doctor since our medic friend skipped out on us. The large man patted Erideth on the shoulder, Thanks by the way.

Alex frowned at Erideth, his foggy mind slowly clearing. He couldn't recall exactly what had happened but he did recall that they had been left empty handed.

As I recall our deal was a cut. A percentage. Right now I'd say our our take is zero so feel free to take your cut of zero and be on your way if that's what you want.

He winced in pain as he tried to move himself into a more comfortable position.

I've got enough to deal with now that I have to tell that old coot that the job is a washout.
