"Gungrrrrhhhhh! Cole gritted his teeth tightly as Trina's hands went inside his wound.
Trina

I know it hurts, Cole. Just hang on. Hang on a little longer for me.
Cole heard her words but couldn't respond to her to sooth her stress. Fog was rolling in from the corners of his vision. He was fading and for the first time since this ordeal started he felt the gravity of the situation. Oh Gods I don't want to die. I want to fly Glory and get to know my friends. This is unfair. I have to hold on.

Cole you will hold on. I will help you and I will teach you.

This whole day can go right to hell. Anders thought as he watched everyone else spring into action, a crew working together for one of their own and here he was the outsider, and now with that slap he wasn't just outside he might as well be outside in the snow...in shorts...and flip flops...at night.
Quote:

"You still recall what you picked up at the clinic? If so, get me vitals on him,"

Anders did as Trina asked without hesitation, he wanted to prove he could be useful, and that he wasn't whatever they seemed to think of him. He finished scrubbing his hands clean and slipped on a pair of gloves checking Tristan's pulse, temperature, breathing rate, and even checking his eye dilation after searching for a light for a second. It wasn't a particularly complex process and it was something he'd done multiple times, here much like when he was piloting it was obvious he wasn't a professional but he was competent because of his own fear of inexperience he was extra careful especially when it came to medical procedures .

"You want me to take a look at that wound on Khei?" Anders called over his shoulder as he worked, using the name everyone else had for the girl, though he felt a mite awkward about it, "I can at least try and clean it up and give her some meds till you look at it?"

Ian smiled his crooked smile and nodded. He wiped his hands on a cloth and moved to Khei

"Good job out there. First rule with me. Stay alive."

He paused and laid his hand on her shoulder.

"You done good."

He dropped his hand and looked at Mike.

"We'll probly be boarded once we dock. Have all the supplies ready and I'll generate a manifest. I dont what to give them cause to question more then the obvious."

He turned to walk away.

"Stay sharp people, we're not out of this yet. Tobias was not on the Horizon, so he either ducked and ran or was forced to leave. He is still our primary mission."

He looked at each of them

"I'll be on the Bridge with Dom"

Enroute he knew he still needed to ask Trina the question.

Mike nodded to Ian, then a few instances later was hit by a countering thought, "Wait, Ian." He stepped toward the door after the captain, then second guessed himself again. He stopped and looked back, his eyes laying on Anders as the man offered aid to Khei. He held a stare for a few seconds before conceding his thought process and continuing after Dugan.

He caught up with the captain, took a deep breath, then insisted on moving further down the hallway to find some privacy. He walked on to somewhere he felt was out of earshot from others, then turned back to Dugan. Mike looked at the wall as he tried to think how he should breech the subject that had been eating away at him since he regained conciousness.

"I can't shake the feeling that I was in charge in ship for less than five minutes and I allowed us to be boarded, taken advantage of, let the ship get picked, I put you at risk, put everyone I risk, hell I put those at risk at risk." Becker's speech had rushed towards the finish, unloading a lot of what he felt responsible for. Mike looked to the ground then managed to put his eyes on Ian finally. "I don't think I'm the kind of guy to be XO. I don't even know how I managed to pull Chief of Security." There was a mocking tone for his job title. "I..."

Becker's eyes leaned toward the bridge. "You should probably put Dom in charge, he seems more cut out for it."

Khei visibly stiffened at the question even if it hadn't been directed at her. Before waiting for Trina to answer, she spoke up.

I'd rather wait if it's all the same.

Lacking more refined social skills, anyone could tell that, though polite, her voice held contempt for the new crew member.

Ian's gesture and praise made her stance soften a bit as she nodded and returned his smile in like.

Thanks Boss. Glad to be of service.

Ian and Mike stood near the first door to the Bridge, by the passage that held the doors to the Pilot's and XO's cabins.

He listened to Mike and waited for him to finish.

From Mike

Becker's eyes leaned toward the bridge. "You should probably put Dom in charge, he seems more cut out for it."

Ian followed his gaze and then back to him.

"If you had been on the Horizon instead a me, the situation would have played out just the same."

He looked back and forth between the Bridge and Mike.

"Truth is, at this moment, I dont want no one else in charge a Glory than you or me. Trina is a fine Doc, but I dont know her well enough to know if she can be a Captain. Same with Khei. Dom and I have too much history for me to trust that much yet, and do you really want me to put Anders there?..."

He paused a moment to let that sink in a bit.

"So, until someone else comes along that I can not only trust with my life, but my ship, I'm afraid you'll have ta do, dung ma?"

Michael wasn't convinced. In hindsight there were many a precautions he should have taken. If only he'd checked that med-bag as they welcomed the pirates on board. But as Dugan continued, Becker conceded to his point of view. He also realised that he had misjudged the relationship between Dugan and Doyle, having assumed there would be more trust afoot if the captain was able to hire the man who gave him the scar. Past that there really wasn't anyone else for the job. No Lear West when you needed one.

"I follow, just..." what more could be said, Becker just needed to step up, but it was all easier said than done. "Don't go running off the ship again anytime soon." Glory was at it's best with Dugan at the helm, of that Mike was sure.

The conversation seemed to fizzle out but Becker did have one more pressing issue."About Anders. I've known you to have some hap hazard hiring methods, our pilot case in point, but this one seems to take the cake."

"We sure about this?"

Ian studied his XO's face before answering

"You remember Jamie Cobb? She used ta run with us a few years back. Anyway, she told me a story about how her brother got hired by a group who fly in a 'ought-three' Firefly named Serenity. Seems Jayne was hired in much the same way as I hired Anders. They haven't had any trouble with Jamie's brother. At the time it seemed the logical thing to do. It worked well with Boosch as well."

He paused

"I do wonder where the Pyschotic Nymphomaniaic went to after leavin with Wolf on the Mei-Li."

"Khei, is the bullet still in or did it go clean through?" The question was fired off without Trina even looking up from Cole. It looked as if some of the stitches she'd put in after Cole had fallen off of the table had pulled and she swore softly and then pressed her lips together. Glancing to Cole's face, she spotted the tell tale signs of someone fading.

"Cole! Look at me! I need you to focus and try to stay awake!" Having given him adrenaline already, she couldn't give him a stim. It would be too much for his ravaged body to handle now. Her eyes moved to Anders and then to the other new face in the room. "Is he stable?"

A breath of laughter escaped Michael. Whatever the situation, the phrase 'psychotic nymphomaniac' couldn't help but elicit a humorous image. Becker shook his head in a final response before looking to his captain.

"So we give him chance." The thought occurred that as a former criminal himself, he should be the one who ushered acceptance of second chances. He nodded in acceptance of the situation, confident that Anders loyalties lay with them for the time-being. Mike would keep a close eye for the moment that ceased to be.

"I'll run a quick round up on what we've lost. Engine room looked full, I'm guessing your shutdown thing covered most of the important stuff." He blew out air having brought his mind back to what he considered failings. His index and thumb pressed tighly onto the bridge of his nose. "Just need to get Cole some good care, then we can catch our breath." He began a walk away but the was one more piece he had to speak.

"Dugan," he began, turning back. "I am sorry. It shouldn't gone down like this." Becker felt he would have to share his apologies with most on board, but for now he had a small amount of work to keep him busy.

After a rushed run through of the supplies in the cargo bay, Becker would be back in medical to check on those he was concerned about.

"Cole! Cole! Dinner's ready and it's time for you to come home." Esther Jagger's voice jolted Cole into consciousness. Trina was frantically trying to save him. He would do what she said and try to remain awake. This is so hard Trina. I'll try to hold on for you.

As Andrew checked Tristan's vitals, he found the unknown Captain of the Horizon to be stable, but unconscious. Whatever the hell had knocked him out and certainly done the job. He also spotted a small wound low down on the mans chest, likely sustained by small arms fire. From what he could tell, the wound had already been seen to and temporarily patched up, but only be someone with the most basic of medical training.

On the bridge of the Glory another sensor contact registered in the distance. A large, unidentified vessel, in and around the co-ordinates which had been provided. A quick sensor sweep later relieved any fears that Dom had. Sure enough, the pulse beacon read as an official Alliance support vessel. Moments later dozens of smaller readings appeared, dancing around it in a complex pattern, smaller defense ships no doubt. Glancing to a screen at one side, he took in the ships speed, distance to the vessel, figured for docking procedures and did the math. Dom turned around in his seat, looking to Ian and Mike who stood just down the hall from him. Raising his voice, he yelled down "ETA in 30 Ian, looks like they're ready for us too.". Turning back, he returned to his duty, mind racing with thoughts and questions as to the state of affairs in the medbay below.

Cole felt a warm hand on his back and turned suddenly to see who it was. The warm face of Esther Jagger smiled down at him. "Aren't you hungry Cole?" she asked. He was, his stomach flipped with the thought of food, but something deep inside told him not to go. He shook his head at her. "Oh, well you ceraintly look hungry." she replied quietly, turning her head back toward some point in the blurry distance before looking back to him. "Are you sure? Your father's just arrived back from his latest run, mentioned something about flying lessons?" she then added, trailing off toward the end intentionally. His heart began to race, was father finally going to teach him? He couldn't miss this opportunity.

Meanwhile, in reality, Cole twisted on the medbay table, letting out soft groans of pain and whispered words of confusion. His head turned from side to side, his face flashing from smile to grimace within seconds. Looking to the medbay's vital readouts, Trina spotted his heart rate slowly starting to climb, though why exactly she had no idea.

"Cole, son lets go. I have a surprise to show you after dinner."

Cole turned towards the voice of his father. His limbs were getting cold but it was a sunny day. He didn't really understand what was going on. It was hard to think. Wasn't I on the Glory? Why is my head so foggy.

Suddenly Cole was flying Glory. It was the most fun he ever had in his life. She handled like a dream and while he was at the controls they became one. Things would never get any better then this.

OH! Gods I'm dying!

It all came rushing back to Cole like the warm blood seeping from his stomach. This can't end this way. I'm not

"ready...."

Cole drifted into the house with his family. His last breath spent.

Ian shouted back to Dom.

"ETA in Thirty, Roger that. I'll inform Trina."

He turned and left the Bridge to the Med Bay.He walked in and heard Cole's gasp.

"Trina..."

He let it end as he saw her state and what she was doing to help. All he could think of was a Stay Dose. One of two left on the ship. It would keep a person from biological death for at most one hour, depending on the severity, and Cole was bad.

He jumped around Khei, Anders, the man and Trina to get to the one draw he had last seen the Stay Dose. He opened the drawer and grabbed the package.

"Trina!"

When he knew she saw what he had, he tossed it to her.

"Eta in Thirty. That should hold him."

He hoped it would.

"This fella seems fine, well for being in a coma anyway." Anders called back as he was finishing up checking the apparently stable Tristan. Then he heard the tell-tale gasp from Cole, he turned intending to move and maybe attempt to help, and suddenly Ian had to Anders eyes just appeared in the Medbay, Gorram he's Johnny on the spot on this boat ain't he.

Part of Anders wanted to help, but the part of his brain that did things like think, knew this had just gone way way above his skill set and he'd just be in the way with Ian and Trina there. He didn't have any clue as to where to go in medbay so he just hung back by Tristan.

To the casual observed he probably seemed unconcerned, aloof, maybe even apathetic, he stood watching arms at his side propping up as he leaned against the Tristan's table. Those who actually knew him, which meant no one on this boat, would have recognized that he was actually in a ready position waiting for an order so he could spring into action when called upon.

No...

The heart rate, the gasp, the sheer amount of blood lost, his and hers alike, Trina knew in her heart it was a miracle that Cole had made it this long. That didn't mean she had to like what was happening.
ian dugan

"Trina..."
She didn't look up the first time Ian called her name. She was trying too hard to fight for Cole, to fight off the crushing weight that was descending on her heart. And too busy holding back tears as the sound of the clock from her clinic once again began to echo in her ears.
ian dugan

"Trina..."
This time, her eyes lifted. They were wells, hollow and beginning to show shadows underneath them. And the soul deep mourning poured from them. Even as the Stay Dose was tossed to her, she knew what it was. To her, it was the last ditch effort, but it would also mean stepping away from Cole's side. There was nothing more she could do for him now.

Catching the dose, she broke open the sterile packaging and administered the dose and then stood there looking down at Cole. She didn't dare look up just yet. The crushing weight on her heart began to eek out to the rest of her body.
ian dugan

"Eta in Thirty. That should hold him."
"I hope so..." Her voice came out far more shaky than she realized, not really hearing it herself. Even though she was still standing beside Cole, her hands were already peeling away the blood and gore covered gloves so they could be replaced. "I'll see to Khei. Anders, if you can, see the other man gets put on monitors for me."

Finally, her eyes closed and she stepped back from the bedside. Taking a deep breath, she looked down at herself and proceeded to shed the medical coat, leaving her in the still bloodied tank top and empty shoulder holster. Tossing aside the coat and throwing the gloves into a trash bin, she bent over and scooped up her medical bag. As soon as she stood up right, she realized she'd made a mistake.

The wave of heat she'd fought off earlier was stronger this time and with it came darkening vision. Panic flared briefly, but was quickly swept away by the numbing, comforting bliss of enveloping darkness she knew was a fainting spell. No... not now... Her knees gave way, her bag fell from unresponsive hands and her body started to crumple to the floor.

Becker had returned to med-bay, a PDA full of supply details in his jacket. He held himself in the doorway, and had to brace himself with both hands to the frame of each side as he watched Cole's condition. Hope was all he could offer as he kept out the way. What came was a confirmation that Cole would stay in a sustainable condition until they reached more substantial medical care. That was at least some kind of reassurance.

He looked up to see Trina and immediately caught wind of something being off. She had been shakey earlier and Michael knew what had weakened her. He pre-emptively readied his arms and took a few steps forward, in case she was taken by another spell.

As Trina was approaching Khei, they met in the middle and Mike was able to prevent her fall in the middle of the med bay. His arms slipped under her armpits and propped her up so that he whole body was supported on is, as if they were hugging though one party seemed less enthusiastic than the other.

He looked to Dugan past Trina's shoulder. "With Cole stable, I'll take her to her bunk. She needs rest." He then manoeuvred the doctor into a more suitable position for movement, which with little response from her meant he was cradling her in both arms. After all responses, if any, he continued to her quarters.

"Go." was all that Ian said.

"Mr Anders, help me get our new friend hooked up and then see what you can do for Khei. Khei, dear, please let the not so nasty man look after you. Your help may be needed."

He had smiled his crooked smile at her as he spoke.

With that Ian moved to help Anders lift and move Tristan so he could be hooked up to the monitors.

"You know how these things work?"

Khei had started to answer when Trina crumpled but was caught by Mike. She started to ask if she'd be alright but left well enough alone as everyone else seemed to have things under control.

Khei bristled, much like a cat about to be forced out into the rain. Her eyes darted between Ian and Anders and back again. A subtle mixture of confusion and irritation played across her features as the mental battle tipped one way or the other before she finally lowered her head, her sense of loyalty having won out.

A'right Boss. If you say so.

Cole's chest suddenly raised, back arched as he let out a scream of intense pain. His head twisted from side to side, eyes firmly shut. He was hanging on by a thread, but at what cost. He landed back on the medbay table with a thud, knocking over a nearby tray of medical instruments. Looking to the screen which monitored him, Cole's vitals were jumping all over the place erratically. Trina took a step toward her patient, only for him to turn his head toward her. Out of nowhere his eyes burst open. For a few moments he starred intensely at her, a quick flicker of emotion dancing through his eyes. His mouth slowly began to form a smile, blood now running from the corner of his mouth. Before he could finish, his eyes closed once more, head rolling to one side as his mouth fell open.

The vitals monitor once again began its high pitched alarm. No pulse, no brain activity, no nothing. Cole lay there motionless, his final drops of blood pooling on the table beside his head before dropping calmly to the floor below.
