Miles nodded and smiled again. "Right then, Soonest done, the sooner we can get you a new cargo." He looked around, saw the stairs and headed off, turning briefly back to the Captain. "Thanks again Captain. Good to see new blood after. Well, you know."

Regan paid the docking fee, checked that all the necessary jobs were underway, then headed off onto the station. He showed the Larsen ID to security, cleared through, and on a hunch he headed for the nearest bar. Sure enough....

He bought two beers, sat down in the booth and slid one of them over to Kidd, taking a slug from the other before speaking.

"Ok. First, you don't stow away on a ship and expect a warm welcome when you get caught. When you do get caught, you don't act cocky. And you will never, ever get the trust of a crew by trying to get one of them fired and take their place. Out there in the black, only thing keeping you alive is the people around you. Piss them off, you might as well put your gun in your mouth.... That said, you got guts. And you don't know when you're beat. I like those qualities. You still want a job, you got it, Copilot. Give it a couple of runs and see how you work out..."
I came into this 'verse kicking and screaming, covered in someone else's blood. I'm quite prepared to go out exactly the same way.....

Kidd took a swig of the drink as he tipped his head. "You got a deal Captain." I knew he couldn't resist my abilities, he thought proudly. "So where are we heading?"

Monte watched as the last of the shipment was trudged out the cargo hatch, and then secured the cargo bay. He wrapped up the left over cargo straps and tucked them away in their lockers before looking over the floor for any loose items. Satisfied that all was well and good, he clambered back up the stairs and then turned down the corridor to engineering.

Think I'll double check that starboard valve that was acting up during landing. Might be a minor leak in the hydraulics as well.

He walked into the port control room and crossed over to starboard, pulling on working gloves as he went. Taking a spanner in hand, he crawled out into the starboard thruster access tunnel to inspect the questionable condenser fitting.

Blaine got back and overheard Regan talking to the authorities about overseeing the exchange. Blaine knew he had to do something, and well, whilst it hadn't been that long a journey, he needed to stretch his legs, especially off the ship.

Blaine walked over to where he was needed, and stood there. Blaine was an imposing man, and wouldn't take crap from anyone. Whilst his physical being was intimidating enough, he made sure he was able to back up his overall presence. Blaine stood there, his arms folded, watching.

Blaine looked away slightly, and saw Regan talking to the Kidd, hopefully he was gonna make the Kidd pay for his passage. It's the least the Kidd could do after stowing away.

Regan grinned.

"Ain't got a Gorram clue! Gonna finish this beer, then head off to the Traders Guild and see what's on the boards." He Held up his hand. "I know, I could get all that of my hand-held, but I got a habit of looking people in the eye. I feel more comfortable that way... And one more thing. You still owe me for one trip. I won't see you with nothing in your pocket, so I'll take it piecemeal. You'll get 10% off the top for each run, not counting the one we just did. Next two, you get 5%, then we're square."

Kidd sipped his drink. "Sounds good Cap'n" he placed his drink down on the table and placed his arms behind his head, looking around the bar.

A short half hour later, and Monte had the pesky valve tightened back down. He crawled back out of the access shaft and wiped his brow on his sleeve. After checking readouts on the starboard console, and being satisfied that the simulation was within limits, he tossed the spanner into the toolbox nearby and picked up a rag to wipe his hands on.

Monte returned to his cabin and took a brief shower to get the stink off. Changing into more suitable clothes, he adjusted his belt, aware that there were no weapons hanging on it, and stepped out of his cube.

Walking back to the passenger lock, he glanced around the common area that seemed both quiet and empty. Uncertain as to where everyone else had gone, he set off on his own journey.

Exiting the ship's airlock, Monte turned toward the station' checkpoint and smiled as he approached. A few general queries about his position on ship and his proposed destination, and he was pass the guards there and deep into the main concourse of the station.

Let's see what this bucket has to offer. Maybe a stop at the local refixer's gallery.

The Baroness had had a reputation. Quite a lawless one really. But the presence of the Alliance ‘peacekeepers’ had impacted on it quite badly. More than one store front was shuttered down with Closing Down or Sale signs plastered over windows.

On the main concourse though was what Monte had been looking for. Here were the smaller stores that dealt with the realities of shipping in the black. There were none of the big dealerships here, although a few neon signs in Chinese or English proclaimed that the shops acted as registered agents. One of the signs looked like it might even be in..French? Probably the Dassaut-Loire agent. Some of the stores were far more specialised, ranging from lubricant suppliers to those dealing with the latest in electronics.

The dealership agents were all the same though; they only supplied parts for their own. And the Traveller was no longer in production. Even when it was, it wasn’t top of the line. Oh the Blue Sun agent knew of a part that would fit. So did most of the others. But at a ‘mere’ two and a half thousand, not including fitting. with a ten to twenty percent margin above that from some of the other stores?. Well. it proved that finding a replacement Navcomp wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Right at the end was a rough service lift – the sign over it stated simply ‘Reconditioned Parts’.

-------------------------------------------------------------

As Regan entered the concourse he was instantly assailed by the noise of a fight. In one corner he recognised the Postmaster, Miles, the same one who had to still authorise all the payments, laying about him with a pipe of some sort. Two women and a man, all in what seemed to be Postoffice working coveralls, were going at him with knives, boots and fists. “Sod you!” one of the women screamed. “You don’t tell me what to do you fed licker.” She got a boot into the back of his knee and Miles pitched forward. Most of the other onlookers were pointedly ignoring the fracas and were making their way either off the concourse or into the various shops and cafes.

Monte shrugged as he headed into the service lift and glanced over the list of levels. There wasn't much in choices; the lower level indicated Electronics and Avionics. Fair enough, he thought to himself. He tapped the screen and the doors sliced shut with hardly a whisper of hydraulics. The lift shuddered for a moment and then dropped.

The entrance was unremarkable. The man behind the counter even more so. Racks of PC boards and spare parts littered the walls on both sides. Monte took his time browsing through the stock parts, looking for those parts he figured would be required to rebuild the NavComp board. There were also fully configured boards racked in one of the shelving units. Although they seemed in good condition, he wasn't sure how they might workout in the Rosin.

The lights in the store went out suddenly as Monte was whacked in the head from behind. He slowly fell to the ground with a thud, blacking out.

Blaine watched as Monte stepped off the ship, he probably hadn't seen him, but Blaine didn't care, he was staying in the shadows, not really wanting to associate with the rest of the crew, most of them seemed good enough, they just werent his kind of people. Monte seemed to be leaving the ship, for what end he didnt know, probably to look for a spare part or something or other.

Blaine hadn't been given any 'orders' by 'the Captain' so he had no plans to do anything, he just hoped that they would be moving on soon. the job seemed to have gone without a hitch. More jobs equaled more money and more money meant that he could eventually buy his own ship.

"Blaine!" <hacking cough> "Blaine!" the rasping sound was the Captains, coming over the emergency frequency, echoing throughout the ship.

"Find Monte! The junkshop.. <another racking cough> ...chance" A clatter of noise and a sucking noise, one Blaine recognised quite clearly as that of a blade being withdawn from Flesh. The Captains voice again. Exhausted. "Find him!"

Blaine heard 'The Captain' over the comm link, it seemed that Regan was in trouble, Blaine could hear flesh being broken in the background, but Regan had told him to find Monte, seemed Regan could handle whatever was happening to him. Blaine shook his head, half at the situation he found himself in, and the other half at just having to babysit someone else.

Blaine walked to his room, and picked up a few essentials, knuckle duster, sword, and retractable baton. There wasn't any guns allowed in the station, but they hadn't said anything about combat weapons. If they did say something, Blaine could just 'play dumb'.

Blaine walked out of the ship, not seeing anyone as he walked the halls, he pressed a button on his way out, closing the cargo doors, essentially locking the ship down. He then made his way to the junkshop. It seemed that 'The Captain' thought the greasemonkey would be there.

For some reason the rest of the station was 'quiet' - the security staff were almost all gone. A shore patrol literally pushed him aside as they pounded off towards the central shaft of the station.

And the poor folk on this level had hurridly started calling it a day as security shutters started rolling down over windows and doors. In fact the Junkshop soon became rather conspicuous by the way its door was still unshuttered and the windows lit.

And yet the place seemed eerily empty - too empty perhaps. Most of the goods here were boxed and neatly labelled but there was no back room - only a lift.

It was a cliche, but the station was quiet, too quiet. A space station should have hussle and bussle, but this one didn't. It was almost deserted, Blaine thought that there would at least been workers milling about moving boxes and crates and the like. But once again, there was no one, not a soul. Blaine looked around, getting the lay of the land, trying to find exits in case something happened, but apart from a couple of boxes which he could use for cover, there was nothing, nothing apart from a lift.

As he started to walk, shutter went down, it seemed like the place was going into lockdown, and for what? Blaine had no idea, and he didnt like what was going on. Blaine walked slowly towards the lift, making sure that he kept his eyes peeled, that almost sixth sense that he had developed from his combat days was itching, yet keeping him from knowing what was behind him.

Blaine walked to the lift, and pressed the button. Blaine would have felt better if he had some sort of gun on him. Maybe with no one around, it would be prudent to go back and get at least a couple of his guns, the smaller ones, the one which could be easily concealed.

Blaine proceeded down the lift and made his way into the now empty junk shop. There appeared to have been a tussle as pieces of merchandise were strewn about the floor. On the ground Blaine saw Monte's Ident Card laying there. Blaine saw that there were security cameras all over the store and behind the register was a back room. It was strange that the merchant wasn't even here, leaving his shop unsecured like this.

Kidd came from behind Blaine and looked around. "What's going on, where is the Cap'n?"

Blaine had an unnerving feeling in the lift, it was too quiet, and the lift was quite small, if something was to happen, he didn't have many places as a way out. When he finally got to the stop, he found himself in a junk shop.

Blaine surveyed the area, there were a couple of escape points, as he slowly walked into the room, he save an ident card on the floor. Kneeling down on one knee, hand on his asp, he picked up the ident card, it was Montes. Blaine looked around, to see if he could notice anything, the place was empty, easily could have been cleaned up and then people left, except for the merchandise.

Blaine stood up slowly, he had a feeling someone was behind him. He turned, hand on asp ready to make a move, but then saw it was The Kidd

Blaine shrugged his shoulders at the question, then showed the guy the ident card on the floor.

Suspicious he stated, the Kidd could take it as Blaine talking about the Kidd, or the ident on the floor.

"Looks like there was a struggle." Kidd gestured at the merchandise scattered about. "Either that or this merchant is messy. Whats the plan?" Kidd looked up to Blaine for a decision.

The Kidd spoke, and he spoke the truth. Blaine walked up to the merchandise, it was the only things that he and, apparently, the Kidd, who was now with him, had to go on.

Clues he said simply

Blaine walked over to the merchandise and started to root around, taking a look at the surrounding areas, his training would hopefully pay off and he would see a clue of some sort.
