Regan visibly relaxed as he watched Layla manoevre the Rose like a shuttlecraft. Slowly the ship came alongside and into the docking bay, and he breathed a sigh of relief as he felt the docking clamps lock into place.

"Nice job. Now, lets find Griggs's contact and get paid...."

As the main lock doors opened into the station, there, waiting for them, was a tall Alliance Naval Leftenant. Looking like the prototypical recruiting poster from the war, a series of worry lines and darkened skin made him look like the veteran he obviously was - judging by the medal tabs he was toting anyway.

Behind was a full squad of Alliance security troops, all of them armed, and all of them pointing guns straight into the Rosin!

The Leftenant stepped forward. "Paper's please, Captain. After that little episode, we're carrying out a mandatory security and technical sweep. Please ensure that your engineer," he looked at a clipboard "M. Furlong, is present." He waved the squad through and then held his hand out. "Identcards please."

Regan carefully handed over his ident, keeping his other hand well away from his holster. He looked over his shoulder at the crew assembling behind him, no sign of Monte, he must still have been working on the navcomp. He looked back at the Lieutenant.

"Furlong's working on the problem, I'll have to call him up, ok?" The officer nodded, and Regan pressed the button on the airlock comm panel.

"Monte? Need you at the lock, urgent!"

He let go of the button, and concentrated on trying not to look angry and nervous all at once...

Monte had the navcomp opened and the main circuits pulled as soon as they had lock down. Now he was running a diagnostics probe along the PC board, looking for breaks or anything else that might indicate a problem.

The intercom squawked, "Monte? Need you at the lock, urgent!" and he jumped. Not far, just enough to sting his britches. What is gorram hell now?

He laid the motherboard gently back into the open cavity and stood up. Turning on his heal, he hurried back through the galley, down the stairs and out to the main lock. There, beyond the cluster of other crew, stood Regan and some high fa-looting Alliance dude.

"Yessir, captain. What's up?"

"Yessir, captain. What's up?"
Regan nodded to the Alliance officer.

"This nice feller'd like to know how come we can't hit a docking clamp under full guidance. Have to say, I'm kinda curious as well.... Any progress on finding out what's wrong?"

He was doing his best to sound casual, trying to reinforce the fact that it was an accident rather than an 'incident'....

Monte looked at the official, sizing him up. "You any good at comp systems? Something is tying up the new nav. Looks like it's a new system that was hobbled into the old one. The two aren't behaving and that caused it to fail to recognize the Alliance lock on. I can track down the problem, but it's going to take more time and more equipment."

He turned to Regan. "Might be faster to have this gentleman see it for himself so he understands what caused the problem."

But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me

As soon as they’d docked, Layla had dived under the console with Monte, tracking down the source of the problem. A ship that wasn’t working right was like an animal in pain. When Regan had called Monte to the airlock, she stayed in the bridge. No need to crowd out whoever it was at the hatch, especially if they had itchy trigger fingers. Besides, it gave her some space on the bridge to do her victory dance. It was a tradition, carried over from when she was tiny – a little celebration of every successful journey. As she whirled past the console she spotted Regan’s half-empty mug. Well, no point in letting it go to waste. She grabbed the mug and squatted back down in front of the open console again before anyone could catch her dancing.

Blaine heard Layla talking over the comm link. Seemed they were ready to land. Blaine started to suit up, putting on his kevlar body armor, he padded out the pockets with his guns. Knife in his right boot, Skye by his left arm pit, Buffy by his left pocket, Dana by his right hip. Sword on his back, and he would fill his hands with appropriate weaponage when it was time to leave the ship. It was all about routine for him, it was what made him a good solider in the war. Blaine had to channel out the thoughts of Regan, and just concentrate on the job at hand, afterall, he needed the paycheck to get off this ship. In the Baroness as well, he may have been able to find another job to move onto.

Blaine walked out to the cargo hold, that when he saw someone. Someone he didnt know. Someone who wasnt part of 'the crew'. Blaine's hand went instantly to his gun, pulled it out, and pointed it at 'the Kidd'

Kidd slowly sat up, coming to his senses when he heard the sound of a sidearm being unholstered and pointed at him. He looked at the hulk of a man in front of him and put his arms staight up in the air, performing the universal gesture for surrender.

"Whoa there. I mean you no harm. Just needed a ride. I am unarmed." Kidd's voice was shaky as he stared down the barrel of the gun.

Regan watched as Monte and the Lt. headed off to view the source of the problem, and then smiled around at the rest of the Alliance grunts. He'd still not seen Blaine, and knew that, if the Officer stumbled across him and made a challenge, it was likely to turn unpleasant. He thought quickly, trying to come up with a diversion to get the rest of them off the ship as soon as possible....

Layla stayed staring into the guts of the console when she heard two sets of feet returning to the bridge "Monte, Grav control's behaving a bit oddly, and I think the overheating's coming from the secondary... she trailed off as she turned around. It seemed to have had the desired effect though, the Lieutenant standing there was taking in the array of spilt wires and equipment with a less sceptical air than he could have been using. "Ah, brilliant. You here to see what went wrong Lieutenant? I can talk you through what we've found so far." she did her best to sound like she could happily talk technical for the rest of the morning. Truth was she probably could.

Cargo Hold:

Blaine stared at the youngish man in front of him, noting the fact that the Cargo hold showed no other trace of him before this. And that no-one had seen anything through the journey from the gangway. But then the lad had probably squirreled himself away. He shoved the gun back into the holster and grabbed Kidd by the collar and threw one of the arms into a half nelson - painfully pushing it into Kidd's own back.

"Huen Dahn. Yi Dwei Da Buen Chuo Roh. Don't even think of an excuse!"
Blaine spat, spun Kidd around and pushed him ahead until they reached the stairs. As Kidd stumbled, Blaine hoisted him up the stairs to the main cabin. Where he was met with the sight of the Alliance goon squad.

At the sight of the heavily armed man shoving a 'hostage' in front of him, every man spun around and every weapon came straight up. Blaine shrugged, let Kidd go, and nodded at Regan as he stepped away, keeping his hands wide and up. "Found this below."

"Leftentant!" a corporal called through the bridge hatch.

On the Bridge

The leftenant actually managed to crack a more pleasant smile at the sight of Layla, hair mussed and with sleeves rolled up. Nevertheless, he had a job to do. "Leftenant Carstairs, Ms Heath?" he asked. As soon as she looked up properly, he was able to verify her retina's to the ident information he'd already got. A second later he got a confirmation on her identity. And the fact that not only was she as clean as the Captain but also another ex-alliance soldier. Not that normal out here.

He moved over to look into the tangle of wires. Quickly stripping off his tunic, he handed it to Layla as he reached into the depths of the NavComp system. "I'm the Dortmunder's Navigation Officer. Which is why I got pulled on shift when you declared an emergency. " He held out a hand and took a torch shining it inside the casing. "Hell! I haven't seen one of these for a donkey's age."

He pulled his head out of the NavComp's box. "Go Hwong Tong! It's Wong Dahn alright. I'd say that's the original comp underneath this covering." and he gave the box a slap. "They stopped making chips that size just before the Alliance. So someone's added a crude buffer on top of it. Not fit for the purpose although I suspect no testing would have proved it. Only way for her to work with this at all is if someone only used it for what?" he shrugged. "An hour? Two at the most. And then switch off until you reach your destination. I'm sorry but I'll have no choice but to issue a defect notice until you get a replacement." He reached for his jacket when a shout came through from the wardroom.

Monte escorted the Alliance officer onto the bridge, where Layla was deep inside the guts of the NavComp. He held his comments while the two of them discussed the issue at hand. As the officer determined the status of the dummied up electronics, Monte snorted in derision.

"Well, we just took possession at the last port. I think the Captain will be duly upset that this was just cobbled together. I'll fill him in."

Just then the call for the LT came through the hatchway, and Monte followed him back out to the main lock.

Stepping up to Regan, he shrugged. "The NavComp needs replacing. Seems it was a bargain and not duly tested. He says it wouldn't hold up for any serious use. "

Kidd felt pain as Blaine had his arm locked up. "Hey! Let go!" He quipped as he was then carried up the stairs. There was no point in resisting since Blaine was almost 3 times the size of him. He felt Blaine release him and realized why. The squad of Feds with their weapons pointed in there direction.

"This is all a misunderstanding" he said nervously rubbing the back of his head.

Layla threw the officer's jacket back at him and waited until he'd left the bridge before leaning round the doorway. Yup, guns. lots of guns. She shrugged at Monte "Well, it looks like Blaine got a prisoner. He's always wanted one"

Ok, Regan's day was starting to get very unpleasant very fast, and in two very different ways. His military training kicked in, and he assessed which was the more urgent of the two problems and met it head on. A NavComp would mean a shopping trip, whereas the stowaway was right in front of him. Fine... First things first.

The lad looked frightened to death, though Regan wasn't sure if it was from the sight of the guns in front of him or the proximity of Blaine behind him. He seemed innocent enough, though, and Regan decided to take a chance. He shook his head...

"Smith, I've told you a dozen times to stay out of the Gorram cargo!" He turned to the Lieutenant. "We're carrying a consignment of fine wines from Athens, meeting a freighter here today for transfer. Seems our ship's cook has a bit of a thirst.... Last minute signing, I might look a bit more carefully next time...." Well, covering for the guy was one thing, nobody wants to see a feller handed over to the authorities after all, but Regan couldn't afford to be associated too closely with him in case he was wanted for something nasty! A last minute recruit with no chance to check his creds was feasible, if he was clean he'd be fine....

Kidd was surprised at Regan's reaction. He nodded and said with a bit of confidence.

"Yeah! Sorry about that Cap'n." He folded his arms across his chest. What did I get myself into..

Blaine saw the Alliance personnel in the main cabin. Blaine didn't flinch, it would arose suspicion, but his hand was ready in case anything happened. Since he had joined this ship, he had come into more Alliance people than he had in his years as a bounty hunter, maybe it was another reason why he should leave the ship. Especially one which seemed so unaware of its surroundings.

How did this 'Kidd' get onboard? How had no one found him. Blaine knew some of the blame should fall on him, but not all of it. Having a stowaway was a bad thing, who knew what this 'Kidd' knew, or what the frack he was doing here, but having the Alliance with them at the moment would more than likely save the Kidds bacon, but if he didn't have a proper IDent, it would more than likely be his undoing, as well as the ships own undoing.

That was the problem in working with a crew, so many people could let you down, and Blaine didnt like to be let down.

Regan came up with a decent enough excuse, it would work for the immediate future, as long as the Alliance didnt go poling around any deeper.

Monte watched as the mercenary entered with some wet behind the ears kid. He deferred to Regan's authority, and realized that their leader was doing his best to keep the situation from getting out of control, what with a squad of Alliance storm troopers standing armed in the main lock. Monte made sure his hands were exposed and easily seen, rather than take a chance of being mistaken as armed and dangerous.

Something wasn't right. Leftenant Carstair's was no fool and he'd been doing this sort of job ever since the end of the war. Cleaning up little hot-spots, eking out the precious manpower of the cruiser as they moved from one crisis to another. One of the guards flashed an ID processor onto the man's eye's. Not available to station security, the message wave hit the main computer bank on the cruiser before tagging back to the Leftenant's comm.

He looked at it, comparing the picture and information to who he had in front of him. "'Smith?' Honestly son, dead-heading as a cook? Surely you could have persuaded the Captain here to take you on as something even slightly better than that!" The contempt in the Leftenant's voice was clear to all there. "But dead-heading's or steerage is not strictly against the law. Not for a one shot deal, my lad. Any further trips and you'll have to sign on legally." He shrugged his shoulders and turned to Regan.

"You need a commercial co-pilot, then I'd take him on. Seems like you already know enough not to trust him totally, though." and he nodded at Blaine. "Which is my other point. No arms on the station! None! I don't care what you may have run across before but for now MY men are running station security. The old station chief was arrested five days ago and until the stations status is fully reviewed it will remain under Alliance Security. All other business is going on as normal - we're just providing security."

Carstair's reached out his hand to shake Regan's. "I am sorry about your NavComp, Captain. You've been handed a rum shake of the dice there. I will send a wave back to Athen's and your seller will get a fine. But you won't get any kind of recompense from that. In the meantime, there are several gentlemen waiting for us to finish so they can unload." He waved the rest of the goon squad out of the airlock door and turned after them. Of a sudden he turned with a genuine smile, and quickly bent to mutter in Layla's ear. "My dear Layla? Off the record and for a drink? I just might recommend you try some of the dealers - but knock them down!"
