<<From 'Into the Vanguard'>>

After the initial explosions, the ship went silent. The smell of smoke was issuing from a deck below and the hull had definitely been breached. the crew, assembled in the Mess, were mostly in good condition. The Captain was downed, at least for now, and Natasha the first mate was by his side, checking over his condition. She was forced to take control.

"Someone get to the cockpit! I don't like being blind." She said someone, but the words were directed straight to Sylandra. Until their pilot had surgery, she was the most qualified to get them moving. Godwin had gotten them this far, after all.

"We're going to have to land if the hulls been breached... somewhere safe... and someone tell me what's been breached!" Another loud explosion echoed through the ship as the huge vessel shook from side to side - they were definitely being fired upon.

"To your stations!"

Thick smoke curled through the mess, What a mess!! as Sylandra scrambled to her feet, rushing toward the emergency locker located in the corner. She pulled the small handle open and started handing out the emergency air masks, putting the first one on herself. Glancing around at the new crew members, she tossed the next couple over to Natasha for her and Eduardo. As Nat started issuing orders, Syl nodded and made a dash to the bridge.

Sliding into the pilot's seat, Syl ran a fast diagnostic to see where the damage was and where they could cordon off the bulkheads to prevent loosing all air. Hitting the intercom, she made the announcement, "Hang on, people, we're goin' back into atmo. I've isolated livin' quarters from cargo 'til we get back on dirt. "

The city they had just broken away from was not far below, but untamed wilderness stretched out from the metropolis in all directions. It wouldn't be too hard to find somewhere secluded to set the ship down.

According to the screens in front of Syl it seemed an unregistered vessel was firing upon them, hanging in orbit. How they hadn't picked it up on their long range scans was beyond her. The breach was contained for now, that's what mattered.

Jonathan wasn't properly attuned to taking orders on The Vanguard, nor did he actually know what constituted his station. His instinct never took a day off though, and he knew he wanted to access the situation and combat it and simply and effectively as possible. After pulling himself up off the floor he made for the bridge, figuring it for the centre of all information at this time.

Placing himself out of the way at the back of the bridge, he caught the highlights. Hull damage became apparent, but more his forte were the enemies with Vanguard in their sights. He stepped forward and spoke to those present, though his speech hit Syl more than anyone else, she seemed to be the girl in charge.

"Can we return fire?" He asked in a loud but calm voice, his polished accent immediately noticeable. "Launch an escape pod at them?" That came as more of a suggestion if it was a possibility at all. "Open the airlocks and throw rocks?" His tone conveyed the height of last resorts, but also the need to take the pressure of their backs. Didn't matter where they landed if heavy firepower was on their tail.

Normally, Jen would have headed straight for the smoke. She'd have gone looking for the source of it and, had it been fire, she'd have done everything she could to put it out. Today, it was different. She'd just watched the boss drop to the floor and there was no way in hell she was going anywhere til she saw him to medical.

"Tash," The move to the other woman's side and the boss' side had happened before Jen had even contemplated it. "Can we move him?"

The question was straight forward, deadly serious and made clear she wasn't going anywhere unless she felt there was no need for her to help her captain. Once that was done, she'd see to other critical matters. Syl had the eyes in the sky for now. Once they landed, Jenna could slip into the security role she was more accustomed to.

Sylandra tapped a track onto the high altitude bandit and rolled the ship over onto its back, nose dipping hard toward the deck. Good thing we got grav compensators. She pushed the yoke hard down and kicked the thrusters up another notch.

Syl glanced back over her shoulder at the suggestion. "Sure, toss on a space suit and step outside. Oh, you might take a 'chute with you." The grin she presented countered the seriousness in her voice.

A shudder ran through the core of the stricken ship as it tore back through atmo seeking cover in the cloud cover. Syl's eyes went back to the windscreen, looking for a potential landing spot that also gave good cover. Just because he's up there, don't mean he's gonna stay high. If he comes down after us, we'd best be hard to locate.

Sylandra tried to look in sixteen directions at once, the planet below spinning directly ahead of them while streaks of rocket fire from behind followed them down. Another explosion rattled the Vanguard and she glanced sideways at Jonathan.

"Take the comm/electronics console. Set up procedure twenty-one bravo six. Ah... four units. When I say, execute. That might keep them off our butts for a while."

The ground was gaining, and maybe a bit too fast. Sweat ran down the back of her neck and started to stain her collar. Her underarms didn't feel that dry, either.

As the altimeter reached less than five hundred, she pulled high G and brought the nose of the ship up, at the same moment, calling to Jonathan, "NOW!!"

As the four drone/decoys spewed out of their cluster rack under the port wing, each running a complicated zig zag in opposing directions, she rolled the Vanguard sideways and reversed half the thrusters, committing a "Crazy Ivan" almost at ground level.

Now to find a hidey-hole for safe keeping.

Jonathan calmly approached the console as instructed and took the few seconds he had to familiarise himself with the system. The odd shake from the ship would cause him to grip the nearest protrusion and lean until the gravity shifted back to normal. 21B6, and he set it to four, it was a fairly simple command.

At the loud and aggressive instruction that followed, Jonathan raised an eyebrow but sent the command as needed. He then watched to screens before him to see the results. Holding on for dear life wasn't too bad of an idea either.

Jenna

"Tash," The move to the other woman's side and the boss' side had happened before Jen had even contemplated it. "Can we move him?"
"We better try. I think it's just a hit to the head..." Her words sounded less confident than she had meant them to as Natasha nodded to Jenna and tucked both her arms under Eduardo's. Between the two of them, she was assuming they'd make it to the sick bay. On that thought, though, the ship started to whine and shudder uncontrollably around them, and the spin almost brought the rest of the crew still in the Mess Hall to the ground like their Captain.

Holding on for dear life, Jon and Sylandra were both able to keep their bearings as the Vanguard spun around wildly. As she did so, drastically gaining distance on the small ship tailing them, the pirate vessel just barely broke the atmosphere that they'd just departed. The ship fell into a voluntary spin for a few resolutions, though the makeshift pilot sorted her out soon enough.

With the decoys launched and a confused, distant ship sitting on their radar, the next step was to find somewhere they could land safely.

When the ship took a big hit, Meeka took one too. As she got her bearings and started to get herself off the floor, a massive throbbing sensation started in her head. "Ta ma duh!", she muttered to herself, "Not again!"

Her eyes scanned the Mess Hall, checking to see how the explosions and the like had affected the others. Eduardo was down, and the blonde and Jenna were by his side, trying to move him somewhere, probably to get him patched up. Looked like they were having a bit of trouble moving him as if the ship was caught in a rough storm. Meeka made her way over towards the two and asked, "You girls need a hand moving him? Looks a little difficult moving him in these conditions." She moved closer to the captain and started to reach out towards his stomach, but looked for a confirmation from the two before proceeding.
What I did not know has cost you dear, for there is no cure for death..

Harry let his weight shift with the ship, it kept him standing in the constantly moving corridors, unfortunately it also threw him face first into a nearby bulkhead. He pulled back and spat at it before pushing himself off it and meandering into the Mess Hall. It only took him a second to take in the scene. His posture suddenly shifted, from one of almost careless malice to that of a seasoned spacer.

He'd spotted Eduardo first, down and out for all his sins. Natasha was beside him, fussing away, not that he cared, the Captain was in good hands. Harry quickly killed the grin on his face before anyone had a moment to notice, and reached out to one side, thumbing the comms unit by the doorframe. "Mallow to bridge. How're the skies looking?"

Before anyone had a chance to respond his thumb was off the comm unit and he was moving across the room toward the Captain and those surrounding him, one hand resting calmly on the grip of his holstered sidearm. He looked down at the man, a mixture of concern and bemusement in his eyes. "Is he dead?" he finally asked.

Jonathan eyed the panels, more concerned with their adversaries than the piloting which he left in the capable hands of Sylandra. The pursuers seemed to fall out of favour after the decoys were deployed, it was just what they had hoped for. "That has deterred them," he confirmed, "we should find our landing now."

Wishing to keep the pilots focus on their escape, Jonathan took responsibility. "I'll take it." He investigated comms for a moment, trying to understand it's variation so he could operate it, then responded.

"We have cleared the skies momentarily. We are now looking to take shelter out of sight."

He closed comms, content with his statement. Once they were landed they could begin repairs, take stock of crew, and Jonathan would probably receive orders on where he should be.

"Fine flying," he shared with Sylandra. "I imagine that maneuver made the difference."

Sylandra searched the near horizon for cliffs or caves, while zig zagging the Vanguard through a series of evasive movements. There! She slipped to port and brought the nose around a 15 degree turn toward the darker shadow against the rock wall some quarter mile away. Pumping up the magnification on the vis-scope, she could just make out the break in the landscape, showing a fissure large enough to duck the Vanguard into.

A shrill whistle pierces her lips as she estimates the angle of attack to the hole. "Grab onto somethin' and give the others a heads up as well. This gonna be tight!"

She again balances the twin thrusters, guaging their mutual energies to spin the ship just as it reaches optimum placement, swinging its tail around at the last moment and sliding backward into the cave. As the ship slips under cover, and the nose recedes back into the darkness, Syl kills the engines, hitting the Gears Down at the last moment.

The ship rocks back and settles with the last of its momentum onto its landing pods.

Moments pass as she watches out the front of the cockpit, the dust from their travels slowly fading away into the wind. She takes one more check on the passive scan to see if anything remains of their chaser.

"We're down and clear" she voices into the intercom.

Kara gently let go of the stanchion post she had been gripping through the wild flight. "So now what?" she enquired softly.

After a few more bumping maneuvers, the hulking ship finally touched ground once again, and a subconscious sigh of relief was shared throughout the ship. In the Mess, after stabilising herself against the bump of landing, Natasha once again hitched her arms under the large Captains', and turned to Meeka.

"You do what you can... he's not the lighters man in the 'Verse, but the three of us should manage." She disregarded the question from Harry, nodding it away with a simple "We gotta get him to the sickbay." The man was still breathing, but no signs of movement or coming to were present. It was entirely possible that he'd hit his head. Hard.

Sylandra, on the bridge, was able to vent some of the smoke and fumes from the lower deck out the main cargo bay doors, now that the ship had sturdy ground below her. Powering down, there were no signs that the rogue ship had managed to catch them in time, and only state of the art sensors would pick up their current location from orbit.

Sam, the ship's mechanic, had called for assistance from a few other crew members to help get the situation in the engine room under control. The corridors had fallen silent now as the engine powered down, and it was time for the crew to find their bearings.

Ship wide comms were activated and good advice was shared. "You are advised to take a grip of something." Deleon then dug his heels in ready for whatever Sylandra had planned. All he could do was tentatively watch her expertise which led him to holding onto hope as the ship rocked a back and fourth from it's precarious landing position. When the ship finally settled, Jonathan relaxed and stood up right again, straightening out his clothes. Syl could now take over the bridge.

Jonathan double checked the panels before him, but the threat had dispersed. "So we are." He turned to Sylandra. "But are we free, or have we simply bought time?"

Harry nodded silently as he listened to Natasha, pacing slowly around the downed Captain. He paused, tipping his head to one side and taking a moment to look at the man, in the background someone spoke over the commas, but he wasn't listening, his mind was elsewhere. He took a step toward the man, reached out and laid a hand on Natasha's shoulder. "We got him." he stated calmly, before being thrown backwards and off his feet by the landing.

Rising quickly to his feet with a childlike grin, Harry bent down and reclaimed his slightly scuffed hat. "As I was saying." he added, moving with the others to help carry Eduardo to the medical bay, and paying careful attention to any further announcements overhead. At least they were on the ground again. Something in his mind eyes jumped to to the small of his back, where he carried his only weapon, a small blade. A quick glance down at the man he was helping carry and he was back in the moment. "Best get someone to the cargo bay." he stated to anyone listening, less of a command, more of a suggestion.

Sylandra physically sagged into the chair, pushing a pesky stray wisp of hair off her brow and back over her left ear. Her forehead shown from the sweat beading up on it.

"Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose. My uncle used to say that all the time. Guess we're as free as we can be for now. Be thankful we're just holed up and not full 'a holes. I'm gonna go check with Tash and see what's next on our agenda. Proximity alarms are still set."

She smiled slyly as she got up, turning toward the back of the cockpit. She allowed Jonathan to precede her if he moved that way. Either way, she exited the cockpit and made her way back to the galley and to find out what had happened to Eduardo and Natasha.

Harry's comment reached through Kara's withdrawl and she pulled herself together. "OK." she whispered and turned away. Where had they been holed and was her new Captain the only casualty?

The main thing was to find the hole first. Then see about getting it fixed, assuming that Vanguard had the gear to do it. What was truly bothering her was their lack of pursuit. Somebody had fired at them but where were they now?

Jonathan's lips held tight but his eyebrows twitched as his eyes rolled towards her. A family anecdote was not what he had sought out with his inquiry, Deleon was far too invested in his own safety. However, eventually came the understanding that precautions were in place to detect enemies and that was a satisfying conclusion to the issue.

Jon let her lead off ahead of him as he reviewed some of the system readouts again. He held consideration on what duty concerned him now. They were away from adversity so security was just a precaution of waiting around. Hull repair was a mechanics job and beyond him, as was the patching up of those injured. Jonathan held himself on the bridge and got swept up in purpose he could adopt before resigning to the likelihood that he would have to take on menial work to keep busy.

A sigh came through a slight puff of air through his nostrils, before he turned to seek where his efforts would be needed.
