"Excellent timing, Captain. I'm Ms Grigg's. So good for you to be available so promptly. Delays can cost money and I don't like losing money." She gestured to the other chair. "But courtesy is good business, Captain." She did as she said and waved the waiter over with a menu. "My treat, Captain."

Regan looked over the menu, and manfully fought down the urge to grin like an idiot... The food was superb.

"I'll have the Maryland Crab Cakes. And a Chardonnay?"

He looked to Ms Griggs for approval, and she nodded. The waiter retreived the menu and melted into the background. Regan smiled, took a deep breath and started his pitch.

"Well, while we wait for the food, perhaps we can talk a little business? I've read over the job spec, I've got a solid, reliable ship, new engines, good crew. The terms are satisfactory, so is the pay. If you're happy, we can deal...."

Ms Grigg's laughed out loud merrily. "Oh, Captain! Ever so quick to get to the point." The waiter brought two glasses over and placed them down, followed by the cooler. He disappeared but, as Regan was about to open his mouth again, he reappeared with the wine. Ms Grigg's waved Regan's comments off as she smiled graciously up at the waiter. He opened the cork and, slightly unsure, offered it to Ms Grigg's, who shook her head so he just poured the wine, placed the bottle in the cooler and then moved away.

Ms Grigg's removed a device from her handbag, activated it and placed it openly on the table. "When you order a Chardonnay here, Captain...Regan, it is not a common variety. Yes, I know something of who you really are, just as I know you have a very good reason to hoof it off planet. What I want Captain, is your promise to avoid any unnecessary entanglements. AT the moment, this is a single, one-off transaction."

She paused to sip at the wine, gave an approving nod and resumed. "There are no out-bound vessels due between Athens and the Baroness for another eight days. I need that cargo to meet its next trans-shipment vessel in ten days. I'm paying you something up-front as both a premium and, if you conduct your business well, as a promise to do what I can for you in the future."

"You can talk freely, Captain - that device will prevent nearly all monitoring devices recording anything and will warn me of any devices that can bypass it."

The waiter started to bring up the meal.

As the waiter withdrew, Regan took a bite of his meal, and chewed absentmindedly. He scratched his whiskers, deep in thought, and then responded.

"Ten days? Well, let's say nine to be sure we make the connection.... Of course, the Rose could do it in six and a half at full burn, but we'd dry the fuel tanks in four... At full economy cruise we'd have half our fuel reserve left when we hit the station, but it'd take us twelve days." He grinned at her. "Looks like I'm gonna find out just how good my new pilot is.... Ms Griggs, you have my assurance that I will do everything in my power to deliver your cargo as discreetly as possible. Of course..." He smiled innocently. "Having your cargo on board, you will have a vested interest in ensuring that Captain Larsen has an uneventful voyage, won't you?"

Blaine had finished with his guns, but it seemed like the ship was going through its final prep before take off, there was refueling and the like going on. Blaine walked around in his Kevlar body suit, Skye under his left armpit, Buffy in the waistband of the suit of his back, Dana on his right hip, and Abigail by his left knee. Blaine was tooled up like they were already on a mission, he also had his trusty knife strapped to his right boot. Always be prepared he had been taught. Blaine was walking outside the ship, making sure that everything going on was legit, he watched as the grease monkeys pumped in the petrol, and the tanks were filled with water. Blaine didn't bark out any orders, he just hoped that his presence would instill some kind of fear into the workers, and make them do a good job.

Blaine noticed that the pilot was talking to a stranger by the cargo door, Blaine looked over to Monte and then back to the workers, Blaine then started slowly walking over to the cargo doors to see what was going on.

Monte: What can I do you for, stranger?"
Rosin Dubh

Dorin looked at Monte and made a fast decision. "You can refuse but there is a small fee if you do." The man rubbed his fingers together and then turned a grim face to Monte instead. "Or carry it for normal charges - one and a half tons of mail equals 1000 credits. Now hurry up and tell me which it is to be."
Monte relaxed on seeing the official badge and hearing the postmaster's request.

He smiled as he swung the hatch further open. "Sure, we'll take the shipment. Anything to assist the process of getting the mail to those who are lookin' so anxiously for words from their loves. "
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now

The Post Master nodded. "Thank you. That's such a refreshing attitude there. If you knew what I have to go to get the mail out in time." He sighed as he tapped away with his PDA. "What with the recent disruption, ships to the Baroness are half what they used to be. I'll have the lads deliver the cages to you within the next hour."

"The ten day trip is quite necessary." Ms Grigg's remarked as she started doing justice to her own mail. "As you'll discover on your cargo manifest. Some of the vintages I'm shipping can only be moved along below certain speeds, despite their special travel boxes. Extreme maneuvers will unsettle them as would, if you forgive me saying so Captain, attempting to land on a planet in your ship."

Isla, hearing exchanges with a foreign voice wandered over to have a listen. Catching only the late end of the conversation she smiled at Monte's declaration.
He seemed to have a tender heart and that was a comfort when she was throwing herself into an alien land of independance and adventure.

She watched the exchange with a smile, feeling content and comforted.

"Hmmm... Well, that gives us a very small window to aim for, can't be late, can't be early. Can't manoevre, can't land... Not much room for error." A suspicion, like a sly little mouse, was creeping out of the back of his mind. The pay was just slightly too good, something was out of synch. Better walk away from it...

"Ok, you're on." Damn!

He passed over his tablet, and she transferred over the downpayment, then passed it back. After pocketing it, he returned to his meal, though somehow it didn't taste quite as good as it had.....

Layla frowned at the postal worker
Hang on now, this man ain't the captain. And I ain't flying anything that's not been cleared through him. she nodded at Dorin and continued in a friendlier tone.I'm not saying we ain't taking it either, just that you'll have to run it by Captain Larsen. He should be back within the hour, no huge delay for you and yours to just hold fire til then
She ducked back into her room and hammered out a quick message to Larsen.
Post worker name Dorin wants to commandeer some cargo space. put him on hold til your say-so she wasn't expecting a quick reply if he was dealing with a potential client, but it never hurt to have warning when officials came calling.

Isla raised an eyebrow and turned to Monte, with a sigh. She couldn't argue with the woman. Captain Larsen didn't seem like the sort of captain she'd want to be on the wrong side of. She caught Monte's eyes, and simply raised both of her hands before placing a hand on his shoulder.
"She's probably got a point. Still, it's a nice thought."

Monte shrugged as the pilot stalked off. "Considering that he was threatening us as well as asking nicely, I thought I would at least make a positive effort and show some initiative. Of 'course the Captain has final say, but if I didn't speak up, we could find ourselves in lock down again. Actually, I think the pilot got a little too out of hand with her snottiness. We'll see."

Blaine walked to the cargo door, still looking around, the ship had been breached by the pilot before she became the pilot, who else could get into this shipping yard and stowaway? Blaine finally arrived to the cargo door, but it seemed like most of the crew were there now, seemed from the jist of it, that one of them had allowed cargo onboard without the permission of the captain, a couple of the other, more level headed members had told them about it.

Blaine shook his head at the rookie mistake, it was clear some of them had their heads screwed on right, but then again, who knew? Blaine just concerned himself with getting on with this job, and leaving after the job was done, it seemed like the crew were handling the business amongst themselves, and Blaine went back to watching the final fixin' go into the Roisin

Regan's comm chimed. He read the message from Layla, cursed softly and put down his fork.

"My apologies, Madam, it looks like the Postal Service is trying to commandeer my ship.... I'd better go and sort this out. I'll look forward to receiving your cargo shortly?"

Ms Griggs informed him that her staff were already working on it, and that the cases should be arriving at the Roisin Dubh even before he did. He nodded, with mild surprise, and took his leave, heading for the exit with polite haste.... While he sat on the transport tram on the way back from the Blue Sun Lounge, he shot a message to Layla.

"Sounds like Monte has it covered, tell him to put the stuff somewhere safe. Ask Blaine to run an eye over it and make sure there's no nasty surprises. Meanwhile, expect a consignment of cargo to be delivered from a Ms Griggs, and treat it gently... Prep the ship and be ready to launch in 30 minutes, we're blowing this rock and hitting the black...."

The Rosin Dubh

Even as the contract had been formalised, an automatic dispatch had reached the warehouse and it took only a few moments for the crew there to move the cargo containers onto the wheeled loader trucks that moved back and forth across the starports apron and docking tunnels.

Within ten minutes the first truck was pulling up to the Starboard cargo hatch. On the opposite side of the Rosin Dubh the postal service's truck was closing up on the Port hatch. Both sets of cargo crew's were obviously used to their own procedures and a man of each stood by the hatches ready to count and tag each and every parcel that was to come aboard.

It was the post office crew that yelled out first. "Hey. You'all ready for us now?"

But it was the Grigg's crew that butted in. "Hey, your's can hang a mite. This stuff's fragile, ya know!?. "

The Post Office crew chief stormed across the cargo hold to the other exit, seemingly in a fury to the watching crew. "Hey, I'm on a tight schedule, friend." he stated coldly.

"Yeah. So are we all. Right then, lets see." The Grigg's man and the Post Office crew glared at each other. And then turned around and inspected the cargo hold before turning back to each other and muttering quietly to one another.

"Done?" The Grigg's man asked.

"Yeah. Can't buck the cred's man." the other replied as he signaled his own men to commence pulling the post office cages on board. That's exactly what they were - heavy metal cages holding pallets of parcels, actual sacks of mail and an entire variety of oddly packaged shapes of all sorts and sizes address to various destinations. It was fairly obvious that although the post office's tonnage was small, its volume far exceeded its tonnage.

At the other entrance, the Grigg's crew chief waited for the first cages to be run into the hold and, reviewing the data the post office had given him, he waved his own men forward. Their consignment looked all the same. Enclosed pallets prominently marked with the company insignia, customs plates and shipping tags. But most of them were remarkably light weight - containers designed to safely transport delicate objects and liquids.

And the crew chief was not going to allow any mishandling by a set of what he considered to be rank amateurs.

And so the Cargo handling was almost done and dusted even before Regan had left the nearest terminal building and was striding across the tarmac.

Layla passed on the captains message. She noticed that Monte's attitude had cooled. Why did she always manage to piss off the cute ones? Shrugging slightly, she headed up to the bridge and started the process of prepping the ship for launch, carefully checking over all the controls for any personality quirks the Rose might have. Finally, she was heading into the black.

As he crossed the tarmac, Regan could see the two sets of delivery crew moving away from the ship. A small thrill went through him as he saw the engines start to glow, one by one, and a soft whine reached his ears as they started to run up. The Rose was coming to life, getting ready to take him away from this rock, out into the safety and anonimity of the black. The bullet wound in his shoulder started to throb again, and he popped a couple of painkillers as he walked up to the ramp. He was about to step aboard when a voice from the past almost made him jump out of his skin....

Once the various cargo crates started getting shuffled into position, Monte made his way back up to engineering. He nodded to Layla as they passed, but did not respond. He wasn't quite sure what to say, but he felt that a quieting off period would be more appropriate than to readdress the minor nose bump he had felt.

There is always some conflicts for a new team. Once we have felt out each others' boundaries and sore points, we'll fall right into line, just like any family.

A smile on his lips, he strode purposefully into Port Engineering and ran preliminary preflights, anticipating the pilot's request to launch as soon as possible. He ran diagnostics and was pleased to see that he could link the starboard controls over to this console as well.

Probably even has a station on the bridge, although I like being here for our maiden voyage. Keep my eyes on things while we shake out.

He pulled the easy chair over and plopped down, relaxing his elbows on the chair's arm rests. He started whistling a little tune.
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me

Nathan wondered along looking at the ships docked at the Acropolis Spaceport. It had taken him three weeks and every credit he owned, which hadn't been much, to get here. He hoped it was worth it and the information he'd been given was correct, otherwise he would be stuck on this world, and he didn't fancy that.
He'd heard that an old friend from the war was on Athens looking to put together a crew and hoped he was still there.
He was a little concerned that his wave had gone unanswered, but then it had been a dodgy connection so may not have even arrived.

Moving his kitbag to a more comfortable position he walked down looking at the different ships, hoping that the ship and captain he sought where still there.
This would be a lot easier. He muttered to himself. If I knew what the bloody thing looked like! As he checked the details of yet another ship. He was fast running out of options.
He moved on ignoring the calls of people offering him passage aboard their ships.

A ship further down the line fired up it's thrusters and began to ponderously lift itself from the ground. He glanced up worried that it was the one he was searching for. Looking back down he spied what looked like a familiar figure in the distance striding along behind a loaded heading into the cargo bay of a ship.
Clutching his bag tightly Nathan jogged after retreating figure.
"You got space for one more?" He called out reaching the bottom of the cargo ramp.

"You got space for one more?" He called out reaching the bottom of the cargo ramp.
Regan stared in amazement. "Foster?! What the hell are you doing here....? Never mind, we'll get to that later. We're about to launch, anything keeping you planetside?" Nathan shook his head. "Ok. Stow your gear in one of the empty cabins, through there. We can catch up when we're in the black...."

Regan hit the cargo ramp and airlock controls to seal the bay, then the comm button link to the bridge. "Layla?" The cheerful reply told him all he needed to know. His new pilot was eager to go... "Seal the airlocks, disconnect shore power, switch to internal life support, and take us out of atmo. Gently, dong ma? I'll explain when I get up there....."

He waited for her reply, then shut off the comm, winked at Nathan, and bounded up the stairs two at a time, betraying his excitement at the start of his own ship's first voyage....
I came into this 'verse kicking and screaming, covered in someone else's blood. I'm quite prepared to go out exactly the same way.....
