The small group were able to drop down through the pavement, a temporary ladder descending to where the work men had been operating. The tunnels underneath the road were far larger than expected, possibly used as transit tunnels in days gone by. Now they were mostly maintenance and sewerage tunnels - wide, round and a slippery floor covered in a foot or so of murky water.

The group, having their bearings while still on the surface, were able to get a general idea of which direction to go, though only time would tell how much of a maze they were in for. There were no lights down here, so only after a few hundred feet from the entrance the group would fall into darkness.

Jenna looked around as she descended into the hole.

It was smelly and very soon it was going to start getting dark. She really didn't mind the smell but the darkness was something that was a little bit more bothersome.

She had to put her fear of the dark behind her and to take her mind off it she started quietly humming a song that one of her friends would sing to her when she was trying to go to sleep which seemed to calm her down a little.

She turned around and saw Remy was behind her which made her feel a lot better. She started moving forward and listened to the sound of her boots sloshing through the muck.

She stopped long enough for Remy to move up along side of her.

“Any idea what we are walking through? Or maybe I should just keep that thought to myself?”

Biff trudged through the sewage knife in hand and as the darkness egulfed him he paused to let his eyes adjust. There was not much light to work with but his night vision was pretty good. All those nights out in the woods. He thought about flicking the lighter in his pocket but knew very well that it was empty. I should really take better care of my things. He thought as he listened to Jenna hum a little tune.

Biff turned to his fellow travelers and said, "I don't know about you too but to me ignorance is bliss. Ha ha! Bad enough the dark without the thought of what we're actually walking through." A chill went down Biffs spine as he remembered a cold crawl through a thrench system during the war. He remembered crawling over the bodies of friends and enemies. The only goal in mind was to find the end of the trench to find a safe way out. I really need to calm down.

The lack of light in the sewers wasn't a good thing, Remy and the guys were there, in the sewers, not knowing which way to go, not knowing what to do, they were just winging it. Which had seemed to be the groups mission statement since boarding the Red Dawn. Life could've been so much better if they still HAD the Red Dawn.

Remy heard Jenna speak up, then Biff retorted to her. Remy smiled, ignorance was bliss, especially in the sewers.

Remy pulled out his PDA which had a flash light function. Switching it on quickly, he pointed it in all directions to get their bearings. Battery life wasn't great so he would have to use it sparingly.

"Which way you reckon?" Remy said to Biff

With what little light the PDA could offer, Remy could just make out glints of light reflecting off the bodies of various insects scurrying away as the three trudged onward. Now and then a small pipe would join the tunnel but so far all of them were too small to even consider traversing.

Aside from the wet footsteps and dripping of fluids entering the main tunnel, every so often the squelching sound of insects crunching underfoot would echo through the sewer.

After what seemed like hours the trio finally came to an intersection where Another tunnel crossed paths with theirs.

The path to the right seemed to angle downward slightly as far as could be made out in the dim light of Remy's PDA.

The tunnel to the left just seemed to go straight into that direction. The tunnel straight ahead also seemed to only go straight.

Memories and the taxation of his body the last week or so was crippling Biff's reason and he was spiralling down a slippery slope into confusion that he knew was wrong. He took the tip of his knife and jabbed his left forearm just to tiniest bit and that snapped him tight. Shaking off the effects of his fatigue and the flashback he focused on the tunnel. Biff looked to the left and the right thinking about their general direction in regards to their last surface orientation. "I'm sure that if we keep going the way we've been going it'll lead straight out of the city and not too far from the forest." Biff wanted to get his new friends to the relative safety of his camp so they could get the rest that they and he so desperatly needed. He would not let them down. I wonder how the others are doing. Thinking about the others made him wonder how they were all going to work out their legal issuse. "I'm almost certain that the tunnel straight ahead is right. Any thoughts before we trudge ahead?

Remy could feel it now, as he moved from side to side shining the torch that he had, the journey they had been on was taxing to his body. Remy needed sleep, the little food he had eaten was rushed, but would keep him going for the meantime, but his body was tired, and aching. They needed to rest, all they had to do was get out of the city.

Biff gave his opinions on where to go, and Remy's brain wasn't working, he was just running on empty.

"Lets just go, lead the way" said Remy, allowing Biff to go first, Jenna to go next and he take the back.

Having continued straight appeared to have been the correct choice though it still took a good hour or so to trudge through the muck and slop as the pipe twisted and turned in it's own little path under the city. One particular sudden left turn assaulted the trio with a flash of bright light as daylight glared harshly into the tunnel from the wash the sewer pipe finally widened to greet.

Stepping into the sunlight, the three could easily tell they were a fair ways outside the city, the buildings towering in the distance.

Off to the right was a long ramp leading up to higher ground.

Remy and the group walked, for what seemed ages, and the walking wasn't easy, having to wade through, whatever they waded through. Remy had gotten used to the smell, and the lack of light, but walking through the sludge, it was just so hard, it took everything in his body to keep going.

Then he saw it, light, the light at the end of the tunnel. As they walked out, it was like he was being reborn, from the darkness into the light, looking behind him, he saw the buildings, looks like they had gotten out of the city safe and sound, for the meantime anyway.

Now all that was needed was getting to Biffs camp, maybe a bit of a rest, and then he would have to start looking for some of his contacts on the rock, try and find out if they could get a way off this rock, somehow, someway.

Remy needed to do that soon, before his name was blacklisted, by either the Guild, or by his name getting on the Cortex.

"Lets just go, lead the way" it seemed like he had been saying this to Biff for so long, hopefully it wouldnt be much longer. Remy looked down at himself, he was covered in filth, he smelt like, well sewer, but all he wanted was to rest, and to do that, they needed to get to camp.

Lets just go, lead the way
Biff trudged forward through the gloom hoping like the rest that this ordeal would be over soon. Time didn't seem to pass at all and Biff's agitation was sneaking it's way back to the forefront of his mind when suddenly the beautiful flash of angel wings in the distance. The sewer exit! We're almost through.

Walking into the light of the sun Biff sheathed his knife and looked out their back trail to see the city a good distance behind them. Amazing! He smiled a smile that he saw on his friends. He sighed a deep sigh that pained his ribs. It was getting manageable.

Lets just go, lead the way
Biff smiled at Remy's repeating question. He knew he hadn't been too sociable in the sewer. "Alright we have roughly a half mile to go but we're better off then I thought we'd be cause we are much farther out of the city then I expected to be." Biff noted his own disarray after his week bender and the sewer crawl of doom. Nodding to the others he said, "About twenty five feet from the campsite is a creek where we can at least get some of this off us. Then I'll try to rustle us up some grub." Checking the open area for threats or just roving eyes Biff made for the forest on a march he was relatively used to.

The hike, thought grueling, was mostly uneventful. Birds chirped and whistled from the trees overhead while rodents scurried away from the three as they made their way toward Biff's camp.

Once they were close enough, Biff could easily see that the camp was not as he left it. Any and all his supplies lay strewn about in complete disarray as if carelessly thrown in every direction and the shelter was utterly destroyed.

Obviously someone had been here.. At the looks of things several someones had been here.

As Biff approached the campsite he was enraged that anyone could've found his site. Scanning the scene he looked for clues to see if this was a random woodsman passerby or if this was a deliberate attack on him. It's good that we'll only be here two nights before the meet. If this is the long arm of that Edgecombe joker then we'll not want to be here longer then that. Turning to Jenna and Remy he said, "This isn't how I left this place but I'm also not the only woodsman on this rock. Just in case it's good we won't be here long." As he spoke he continued to scan for footprints and any clues in the debris. "All right guys I'm going to set up some things real quick for you, and get us some food."

Tearing apart the destroyed lean to he piled the wood next to the ring of stones that served as his fire pit. Sifting through the debris Biff looked for materials that would still be of use while looking for any physical evidence of the vandal. Finding that the rope that held his lean to together was intact he rolled it and set it next to his ruck. Taking his poncho out of his ruck he tied it across the trees his lean to used to lean against. Stretching it to as close to a forty five degree angle as he could get it he place stones on the other ends. Picking up some small sticks he took his knife and notched them into stakes and secured the other end of the poncho firmly into the ground. "All right you two get the improvised lean to and if you don't have bedrolls or the like I have my military sleep system in my ruck and your welcome to use that. The black bag is for cold weather and the green bag is for anything else but both are fairly comfortable." Taking out the bivy cover that waterproofs the sleep system he laid it down across from the lean to on the other side of the fire pit.

"Sorry this is the best I could do but to be honest I never expect company in the wilderness and I thought I'd be off this rock on a job already before I had my little bout of depression. I'll get to all that when I get back with some food." Taking his beloved assault rifle out of her case he broke her down onto the bivy cover and made a quick check for cleanliness put her gently back together. Grabbing one of his magazines he checked to see it was full, did the same for a second one and placed the extra in his cargo pocket. Then he locked and loaded Suzanne and secured his ruck sack back up.

"All right, my sleep system is in my ruck if you need it. Again feel free to use it. I won't get uptight if ya'll get in my ruck to get it." Lastly checking his side arm to see if it was fully loaded even though he knew it to be already. Old habits huh? He smiled and asked, " Do you guys have anything for me before I head out? There should be enough wood from my old shelter and the surrounding forest but do you want me to start the fire before I go?"

Jenna shook her head. "Don't worry about the fire I'll take care of it. I'll just need something to start it with ." With that she started gathering kindling and went to work putting together the fire. "You get really good at doing this stuff when you don't have much of a choice."

Jenna kept working thinking about the creek and just how much she really wanted to get all of the sewer crud off of her.

After a little bit of work Jenna had the fire ready to be lit. She looked up at Biff from where she was sitting on the ground and smiled. "I'll leave the lighting of this to you sir."

Remy listened as Biff talked about distance, which made the journey that much worse. Knowing how far it was, only made time for slower, and made the things he was carrying that much heavier. When they got there, it was a mess, people had got there, and Remy was a bit scared for his safety, it seemed they weren't the only ones out there, and Remy had quite a bit of cred, AND a young one in tow. Remy knew he had to try and make contact with someone he knew off, and soon. Remy wouldnt be able to rest easy here, not because it was 'roughing' it, but because of the uncertainty, and the openness of the expansion around them

Biff talked, and Remy just dropped his bags, and sat down on the floor where he stood. He was tired, emotional, and sleep deprived, but he still had lots to do before trying to get some kind of rest.

Remy pulled out his PDA, and started to scan the cortex for ex clients, or people known with connections to the companion trade that they could use for cover, or at least a place to hide out. They had a day or two before having to meet back with the rest of the 'crew'. Remy had to try and find out what the vials were, and try and make more cred so they could somehow all get off this rock.

Remy carried on with the Cortex, and half watch Jenna as she started to make the fire, Remy smirked to himself, for some reason, this little girl who he didn't really know had kept him going, she had pushed him to keep her safe, and that kept his wits about him.

Remy hoped that they would be able to find a contact, still searching the cortex

Biff once again marveled at the young woman who began instantly to gather tinder and build an impressive fire.
Jenna

I'll leave the lighting of this to you sir.
Biff found two sticks that would work out perfectly. He then began rubbing them together. Fifteen minutes and several slight burns and swearing Biff had a spark and the fire Jenna built roared to life.

"That looks pretty damn good," Biff nodded at Jenna and looked to Remy. He was nose deep in his cortex device and he looked, like all of them, exhausted. A few rabbits cleaned and roasted over the fire would do us wonders. I won't venture too far and I hopefully won't be long. Looking back to his friends he said what he just thought. Knowing the two would be glad for some privacy he turned and slinked into the bush to set some traps.

Though it took some time, Remy's search found a few possible contacts. Only one of which was listed and currently residing planet side. One Linda Tsang, an former client who's brother, as Remy could recall, worked in a laboratory.

There would be no guarantee that he'd have any information on the vials or their contents. There was no guarantee that he'd even be planet side.

A little ways away in the bush Biff set up four snares in front of what he was sure was active rabbit burrows. All the signs were fresh. With and luck he would capture two for roasting over the fire.

With his work done for a minute he walked to the estimated center of his hunting ground between each snare and spared one last thought for Remy and Jenna. I hope they are getting on okay and taking advantage of this breather. Then he sat down and crossed his legs. He put Suzanne down next to him and placed his hands in his lap palms up with his thumbs touching. Then shutting his eyes he took a deep cleansing breath. Tightening his focus down to his breath calm began to slip over him. In and out in and out his mind was quieting and he was regaining the awareness of the moment. All the demons departing. His time in the war, his wife's betrayal, and his daughters passing all went back down into their proper places in his memory and heart. Calm relaxing waves of awareness flowed over him and he was at peace.

Just north of him he heard a snare spring.

Remy found a contact finally on his list. Linda Tsang. What was good about Linda was she had a brother who was a lab tech, which could help them. Remy and Linda were on good terms, but it had been a while since she had used his services, he shot a wave her way and hope that she would reply as quickly as possible.

Remy then sat, and started to nod off, every time his head jogged down, it woke him up, Remy wanted to sleep, but didn't want to leave Jenna unattended, especially with biff having left. Remy just found himself looking at the fire that Jenna had made.

After the longest ten minutes, Remy received a message back.

Hello. Linda isn't in but this is her brother. If I understand correctly you need a place to stay planetside? I'm sure Linda wouldn't mind. If you need a transport just let me know where to send it to pick you up.

Meanwhile the woods seemed rather quiet aside the the chirping of nocturnal insects.

Standing up feeling completely aware and relaxed Biff picked up Suzanne and went towards the snare he heard snap. Trapped in the snare was a large rabbit. They would not need more so Biff went around dismantling the other snares. He never used more then was needed. A few minutes later the rabbit was cleaned and Biff found the appropriate sticks to make a spit and returned to the camp.

"Remy, Jenna, it's Biff coming in to the camp." Biff was greeted with half asleep stares from both his new friends. Biff set up the spit and the rabbit meat began to cook.Wait til they get a wiff of this. Biff heard Remy's cortex buzz with an incoming wave and hoped his friend found a contact.

"Hey Remy," he said to not startle him out of slumber too bad,"you have a wave bud."
