A painfully searing flash of light woke Cyrus, pain shooting through both his legs and his chest as he awoke in a cloud of dust and smoke. It was hot. Everything was hot. Too hot.

Fire.

The Red Dawn's shuttle had lost thrusters half way during their descent, the radio calls from the local air-docks control centre crackling into static as the small vessel started to drop. Things went blurry. Their was an explosion near the back of the vessel. A fire had started before they even hit the ground.

Free fall does funny things to a person. Not many folk in the 'Verse get to experience such a thing, not from deep atmo. Of those who do, very few survive.

Cyrus had blacked out during the fall, seconds after he hit the emergency landing release. Exploding from the back of the small ship came the chutes, dozens of them, designed to stop the vessel enough for it to safely land in the ocean or similar. Not in the middle of a city.

Now he had woken to the sounds of yelling, screaming, the crackling of fire, and sirens. The ship was somewhat in one piece, the main door blown open by the automatic crash landing protocols. Outside the light of late morning Verbena came flooding in. Around him were his crew mates and their few belongings, amongst which was an overturned crate filled with the mysterious vials from the Red Dawn.

Near the back of the ship was the limp body of Sonya Gulliver, thrown into an awkward position from the crash landing, blood running down from a crack in the top of her skull.
At least it'd been peaceful, Cyrus thought.

Jenna was not fond of the feeling that came with falling. Deep down in the back of her head she remembered that it wasn’t the falling that kills you but the landing. She saw the city coming up fast and prayed that everything was going to be alright.

Once she was sure that the ship had come to a complete stop she tried to unbuckle the seatbelt that held her into her seat. After a little bit of struggling she managed to get free and started looking for people.

Cyrus started to move, noticing signs of life from the young girl who'd been strapped in the back. He was still trying to focus his eyes from the brief blackout, but nodded at her intently as if to ask "you're ok, then?". He then turned his attention to Saren, her body slumped beside his, and desperately started to unbuckled her from her seat.

Well, there's a pulse. He slid his hand back from her neck with relief, coughing as the thick smoke issuing from the back of the crashed shuttled sunk deep into his lungs. He moved his young companion from her seat then, his eyes finally adjusting to the bright light from outside, and worked at shaking her awake.

"Val. Val, you dead?" He called over his shoulder, body aching and fresh blood running down his arm. What had gone wrong?

Biff stared into the shuttle and was amazed again. Initial scan showed a number of people who seemed to be alive if beat up. Never had such confidence in space travel till now. Heh.

Biff could see someone through the smoke start to move around. "Hey! Hello. I'm here to help. Lets get everyone out." Biff stepped through the door hoping to help where he could.

Joseph had still been conscious when their out of control ride planet side had hit the atmosphere. Without any brakes to speak of, they'd quickly entered free fall. Moments later he'd passed out, content with the idea of himself literally going down in flames.

But he hadn't died, at least not yet. The heat was the first thing to hit him, then the shock, but no pain yet. Someone extremely blurry in front of him kept shouting in his direction. "Wha, eh, who the hell is Val?" he finally replied, tasting the blood in his mouth as he spoke.

And with that, the pain of an emergency crash landing hit him, like a weeks worth of drunken fights and their following hangovers. It also reminded of him of the identity under which he was currently surviving. "Oh right, that'd be me." he quickly added, and what should have been a personal thought ended up being spoken aloud.

But falling from space will do that to a man. Joseph nodded to Cyrus and looked down at himself, now very glad of the safety belt which kept him strapped to the chair, the one which had sat so awkwardly earlier on. After a quick systems check, a testing pull and push of his nerves here and then, he looked back to their pilot with a satisfied but unimpressed look on his face.

"All here." With that out of the way, Joseph took the opportunity to survey the scene, the crashed shuttle not exactly making for the most enjoyable of surroundings. Outside he spotted what could only be described as, urban environment. Must have been the shock. Then an unknown face popped up out of nowhere offering help, and a previously unconscious layer of hearing awakened with it.

It was the sound of a city, hard to forget once you'd been in one long enough. "Where the hell are we?" he asked to anyone willing to answer.

"Where the hell are we?"

"Your guess is as good as mine. I've had a disorientating week but that's neither here nor there. Verbena is our general location." Biff said this more to the shuttle cabin rather then the man who asked it busy as he was with cutting the restraints off a young man. A young girl was by him and Biff saw a much older soul in her eyes then her years let on. The older gent that Biff had first yelled to was giving care to another young woman. That's when Biff noticed that there was one person at least who didn't make the landing. The others were in various stages of wakefulness so Biff busied himself with taking the dead womans body off the shuttle. He always hated the thought of one of these things to be his coffin.

Remy watched the ship explode as they left it, the silence made it that bit more eerie. Jones was piloting them to the nearest planet, on entry everything seems ok, but then they were an explosion at the back of the vessel, he tried to look back but he couldnt see anything except for the big wall back there. Had the Alliance caught up to them? Had the ship they passed sent out a party to retrieve them? thoughts running through his head, his the air pressure getting to his ears, all he could see was land, land coming closer to them, Remy braced for impact, and the next thing he saw was black.

Awakening slightly, he smelt smoke, and the dust. Remy shook off the landing unbuckling himself, he fell out of the chair, everything they had taken with them was all over the place. The back door was open, he looked outside, and saw Sonya there, dead? It certainly seemed like it.

Remy saw Jenna out and about, trying to help people. She had the right idea, and he followed suit.

Everyone seemed to be present and accounted for, as well as a new man, a stranger. Remy didnt have much time to think about that, he started to lug the crates they had of the vials from the ship, placing them outside of the ship, there was a fire, it would be a good idea to get whatever they could. Cred was something they would need.

Remy had no words for anyone, just action.

The crowd that hard formed around the crashed shuttle, half submerged in the city street in the middle of a large intersection, kept their distance as the door exploded from its hinges and Biff had gone to the crews aid. Sirens echoed in the distance, but the small vessel had only been on the ground for two or three minutes - they still had a small window.

Cyrus nodded to Val as he confirmed he was alright, and then did a quick check over to see that the 'flying companion' was moving without too much trouble, either. That put them all in relatively good shape. All except Sonya. He stared at her limp body for a few moments more, then finally turned his attention to the stranger by the door.

"We gotta..." Cyrus extended his arm towards the stranger for assistance, continuing as he pulled himself up to his feet, "... get moving. Local feds will be on this in minutes, and I don't think their jurisdiction is going to help us right now..." He trailed off, wondering if he'd said too much, staring at the newcomer. Now on his feet, Jones could see the crowd outside, keeping a safe distance from them.
None by this cowboy had even tried to help - I guess that's something.

Biff helped the man up and listened to his words. "Not to put you ill at ease but I'm not that well liked by the local authorities either." Biff brought out a small silver flask from his cargo pocket and offered it to the older man.

Looking at all the gear and supplies the crew was stacking Biff knew that they're a little more encumbered then he was. It could be simpler to just make his get away now but here they were disoriented and in trouble. This was his natural element. "Look the names Biff Calhoon and I really haven't anything pressing right now so why don't you all let me at least help you get you and your gear to safety? I'd hate to see you survive this just to get pinched by Feds."

Looking around at the ragtag crew he waited to hear what the others thought. All the while the sirens he heard earlier were getting louder.

The last thing Saren could remember was grasping onto her father's pocket watch, and falling, fast.

Saren woke with a startle, and found Cyrus crouching in front of her. What had happened? She quickly looked around her and found herself in a wreck. It was coming back to her now. The brakes had failed on entering atmo and they had crashed somewhere on Verbena. That was the planet right? It didn't matter to Saren.

When she had regained her orientation, Saren realised her hands felt...empty. The watch. Before she knew it, her hands were working overtime on her seatbelt, and kept fighting with the latch. After several attempts she had the belt off and started scrambling across the floor, well, what was left of it.

Oblivious to the newcomer and the conversations of the others, Saren kept her head down looking for that gorram watch. She wasn't leaving without it. She was starting to panic. The watch was no where to be seen. As the girl turned towards her seat in dismay, the glint of metal caught her eye. The watch was wedged underneath her chair, barely attached to the floor of the ship.

While Saren was frantically searching for her father's pocket watch, the shuttle started to fill up with smoke from the crash. Before Saren realised, her lungs started to fill up with smoke, and her instincts kicked in. With the watch grasped in her hand, Saren made her way out of the shuttle, finding her bag on the way out. As Saren moved through the exit of the shuttle, Saren tripped over some debris and fell face flat in front of Cyrus and all the others. Jing chai... she thought to herself. All eyes were on her when she lifted her face from the dirt. From her embarrassment, Saren's face flared red, and she quickly tried to gather her things together.

She looked to Cyrus and said "Lets go before the feds are on us, eh?", trying to change the subject from her horrifying fall.
What I did not know has cost you dear, for there is no cure for death..

Joseph quickly freed himself from his seat belts, nodding in agreement with Cyrus. "Right, our best chance is splitting up, even out the odds a little." He moved out toward the shuttles hatch, looking to the newcomer with a smile.

"Loving the attitude kid." He said, pausing at the door to pickup a small backpack, and removing one of the vials from a nearby, damaged crate. "For good luck." he then added with a laugh, making his way outside.

It was there he noticed the unmoving Sonja nearby. Damn shame he thought, shaking his head and looking back to the shuttle. "You heard the lady." he repeated, echoing Saren's words.

Cyrus nodded to the newcomer - Biff he said his name was - and agreed in silence as the others started to mobilise. He clambered out of the shuttle, fully aware that one of his legs had been cut open from when the console had been squashed onto him during impact. He ignored hte onlooking crowd and the piercing sirens that hung in the air. The old man simply found his footing and then turned to help the rest of the crew from the wreckage.

Still, Biff was the only onlooker to offer any aid.

Biff heard the young woman echo his concerns and thought that maybe these people are being unfairly hounded by the Feds. Time would tell but now was certainly not time to ask.

Biff saw the younger man he spoke to earlier start to pack up some vials from a crate. He went to where he left his ruck with his beloved Susanne firmly attached picked it up and went back in the shuttle. There he grabbed a couple of the vials and put them in his ruck. He grimaced, Wish I could carry more. These damn ribs.

Once outside the shuttle Biff looked at the crowd and spat on the ground. He hated the mindless wretches. Rage coursed through his veins but he closed his eyes and calmly took a breath. Now was not the time to engage the crowd of useless people who remained ever staring never helping. We have to go. Biff went back towards the older man to help with the rest of the crew’s evacuation.

Remy had taken most of the personal belonging out, some people brought their own stuff, but he took what he could from the wreckage. The crates of vials stayed int here as they were too many to take out. On his way out with his stuff last, he picked up whatever he could from the ship, easy spare parts, and put them in his own cases. As he got out everyone else was there discussing.

Jones was suggesting that they move. Remy couldn't agree more. A stranger was there, trying to help them as much as he could, Remy wasn't even thinking about the stranger and if he could be trusted. The only people he trusted were on the ship with him, especially Jones and Val. They had stepped in on the fight which had started this whole mess. Saren agreed with Jones, which was gonna happen anyway, because they seemed so close, and knew each other from before, a stroke of luck would have them meet in the cells. Val joined in the conversation stating that they should split up.

Remy looked at Jenna. Remy didn't know why, but he had to try and help protect her, the guys could probably do a better job, but he could have sway on this planet due to his contact, hopefully his face hadn't been put out on the Cortex yet, and he hadn't been blacklisted from the Guild.

"Jenna, grab what you can from the shuttle, vials, we can't take the crates, but take what you can carry" he said handing her one of his smaller bags that he had.

Remy made his way back onto the ship, filling his bags with vials, so far he had all his possessions, lots of Credits which he had swiped, and now vials. Coming back outside he looked at the guys

"I'll take Jenna, anyone else wanna come with us?" he stated simply

Remy hoped the stranger didn't offer.

Jenna had been wandering around. She really wasn’t paying attention until she heard her name and then she wandered over too where Remy was standing and took the bag. She then wandered over to where a crate was sitting picked the lock again and began filling the bag with the vials.

“Um alright I was kinda wondering what to do but now that that has been solved I guess that the only thing that has to be asked is where are we going? I mean I’m open to going anywhere as long as the local law enforcement isn’t involved.

Jenna questioned as to where they were going to go. Remy had a plan, but it wasn't concrete. All he knew was that taking the little one with him was the best bet for now. The others could take care of themselves, he had training and could if needed be, but the little one, well, he didnt know to be sure, but he guessed that she would need help

"I'm gonna get on my PDA, hopefully we aren't out on the Cortex yet, I'm may have some contacts either from the build or at least former clients on this rock, maybe one of them could put us up until we can think of something. We could even come back here, pick up whatever hasn't been scavenged." he stated simply.

Remy saw that she was ready, as was he.

"Anyone else wanna come with us?" he stated pulling out his PDA and checking his contact list.

Cyrus was desperate to get moving, his rucksack thrown over one shoulder, his doctors bag held in one hand by his side to cover up the bloody wound on his leg. They were all out now, save for Sonya, though it seemed a funeral service wasn't on the books - sirens were already ringing in the air, and these dozens of folk standing around the crash site were all witnesses who could identify the crew.

"Ok. We need to get off this rock as soon as possible." He turned to Remy, though one hand shot out to grab Saren by the shoulder. "I've got to stay with mine, but splitting up is the way to go. You said you might have contacts, that you've been here before - do you know the Rusted Anchor? I think it's in the western side of the city. We should regroup there - get all the information we can, make contact with anyone we can, and then regroup there. In three days." He offered a small smile, reluctant to move out - how could they split up now? After all they'd been through? There was no time for sentiment, though.

"Mr Calhoon, do you have somewhere nearby that's safe?"

Splitting up and regrouping seemed like the right thing to do right now and Biff knew the place that the older man mentions as their rendezvous in three days. "Mr. I have a camp just outside the city that I haven't used in about a week, but I have little to no contacts or resources here." Biff took a deep breath and said, "I was only passing through here but I had a job fall through amongst other troubles. Those who wish to lay low; my camp is just a left over ring of stones about a klick out of the city. The forest is thick and there is not a path near. I like my privacy."

He looked around nervously. Damn crowd! Biff stuck around the older man and his friend. The vibe from the companion, at least that's what Biff could deduce from his Guild comment, was anxious towards him and he couldn't blame the man. Biff looked at the other man he spoke to earlier. "I don't mean to barge into your affairs but in all fairness ya'll crashed into mine. We can kick around the city all we want looking for contacts till we're blue in the face but we had better split soon." He could feel the burning stares of the crowd."I'm heading out, but if it's too much to ask would I be wearing out my welcome if I showed up at the Anchor?"

Remy listened to Jones and Biff as they talked. The Rusty Anchor, three days. Made sense, give them a couple of days to regroup, and hopefully for some of the heat to get off them, although it would also mean that there was more chance that they would be out on the Cortex but it was a risk they would have to take. Their lives would be one big risk at the moment

Grab as much of the vials as you can. We're gonna need cred, and we can sell those things, once we know what they are, there was crates of them onboard, it had to be going someone, which means its wanted by someone.

Remt started to get his PDA out, and started to go through the Guild Databases of people on the planet. He had been here once before but that client had since left the planet for other places

Val, you wanna come with us? he said looking at Val, then Jenna

Joseph looked around the crash site again, calmly taking in all its little features. It seems they'd come throw an overhead billboard on their descent. All that remained were two letters hanging from support wires.

'B S'. he grinned and turned to Remy. "I've got other plans. You head to safety with Biff and the kid here, we can meet up again once we know a little more." As he spoke, he rummaged about his pocket, and pulled from it a blank business card.

When held correctly, a faint number lit up against the dark material. Reaching across, he handed it to Remy. "Anything hits the fan, call here and ask for Joe." He finished with a nod. "Good luck."

Joseph looked back to the shuttle, then down to the vial in his coat pocket, but said nothing. Something just wasn't right, and with no info on well, anything, it wasn't becoming any clearer. Only one option.

A fresh smile on his face, he turned to Cyrus. "I'm headed into the city, see if I can find a thread to pull on. Could be dangerous, there'll likely be beer, welcome to join." He spoke quickly and quietly, without pause or any real punctuation, hoping to get the message across as quickly and quietly as possible. With the offer made, he looked over his shoulder, scanning the Verbena Skyline.
