Dyton, New Cittel Days earlier a call had been made. All across the 'Verse, computers and pagers and PDUs had picked up an odd signal, and everywhere it went the Feds had followed. They'd tried their hardest to track it, to trace it, to crack its code, but their attempts had been futile. Those in charge, hidden away in some shady back room, knew that the signal coinciding with the escape of a notorious criminal was not a coincidence. The coded message, to those who received it, had been short and sweet - a location, a date and a fee. The reasoning behind the details was unknown, but to those who received them is seemed clear: the Vanguard was back, and she was recruiting. In the slums of New Cittel, one of the smaller, more urban settlements on the small Core world of Dyton, was a well known cafe labelled by the locals as The Rattlesnakes Tango. It was here that the message recipients were headed to, with no more information that where and when they were to assemble. |

By the time Meeka had finally gotten off the shuttle, landing in New Cittel, she started to doubt to herself whether this trip was worth it or not. The thought rushed out of her head the moment it had appeared. This is the Vanguard, she thought to herself, There's nothing better than this. She raised her hand to shield her eyes from the sun, and scoured the terrain for her destination, The Rattlesnakes Tango. Meeka made her way towards the bar, hoping she wasn't late. She prefers to be early on all occasions, scope out the scene and check all exits. You never know what could happen, especially since The Vanguard was involved. For all she knew, Feds could've caught the signal and be staking out in the place. Hell, its happened before. As Meeka entered the cafe, all eyes were on her. "Must be a slow day..." She muttered to herself. Meeka walked herself to a table, looking for the best one to keep her eyes on all entrances. She ordered herself a small meal, Don't want to do business on an empty stomach, She thought to herself. Meeka quickly ate her meal and quietly awaited the arrival of The Vanguard. |

As Meeka took a seat against one wall, a booth that overlooked the front door and the opening that led to the kitchens. On her left were the bathrooms. Every entry, or exit, was covered. A waiter came over shyly, a young boy in his teens, and took her order quietly, hastily departing. There were maybe a dozen other folk in the small cafe, sitting in small groups and talking amongst themselves, an old farmed spewing gibberish at the waitress at the bar. There was no indication as to who Meeka was meeting. Outside the sun dipped, only a few minutes away from disappearing behind the horizon. It was at sunset that the meeting was to take place. |

She still didn’t know who had arranged this. But someone had – and informed her of a not too enviable choice to be here or else. Not that it mattered any. Her last job interview had ended up with her being unceremoniously being thrown out onto the street. She could still feel the bruising. With few credits left to her name and not even the trash on the streets wanting to know her, what real choice was left her? Take this street, then that one; wait; insert monitors into the local cortex array. Check it then move on. She stood out far too much here in her pristine day suit, braided hair and general demeanour setting her far apart from the rest of the flotsam of humanity that she walked through. Even if it had worked so well earlier. A map imposed itself onto her retinal shields. There was her destination – the Rattlesnake Tango, its windows dirty and dusty, local brewers signs glowing weakly through the glass. Only one word appeared, overlaying the map in her vision. "Here." Chwen. This is so Tze sah yu ji. Looking around, she could see that no-one was actually being so dumb as to eye-ball her directly. That might not last for long if someone recognised her. Too many folk had too long a memory for faces. But dusk was leaving the narrow street in early shadow, giving her a chance and she quickly stepped across the street and into the Bar. Her stomach was fluttering, giving her a sharp reminder of older and dangerous times. Someone else, a woman, was ever so carefully keeping an eye on every way in and out. Kara’s message hadn’t mentioned anything specific about the meeting – just to be here, and an old name from the days before. Kara didn’t try to find a booth, instead smiling at the barman as she settled at the bar, parking her case on her lap. She could feel the locals eye’s boring into her; "Iced Water and a Blue Moon." as she nodded at the draught beer and unfolded a couple of bills from her dwindling supply. Without a word the barman pulled a pint of the one and popped it onto the bar, finishing it off with a slice of what seemed to be a real orange. "Beer with Orange?" Her eyebrows raised as she looked over his shoulder – to where she could view the limited security footage on its view screen. Gently she tapped her case, and sipped the ice water, waiting. |

The dusk sunlight cast a dark glow across the small cafe and finally dipped behind the hills outside the small town. Night fell promptly and the few small streets of New Cittel were lit dimly by overhanging lights. The slums, where the Rattlesnakes Tango was located, were oddly quiet for this time of night. A few patrons finished their drinks or meals and made their departure, but very few newcomers took their place. The small building was quickly emptying. The bell at the front door offered a high pitched jingle and the heavy thud of boots echoed as a young woman walked to the counter. She had a slightly scared, but otherwise beautiful complexion, and her blonde hair was pulled back to a tight ponytail. The combat boots on her feet seemed too large for the frail woman, a heavy black overcoat hanging down to her knees. She gave a silent nod to a waitress who promptly ran to the back room, fetching the woman a drink. The scarred woman then slowly turned, first looking across the where Meeka sat in her booth, and then turned her head the other way and looked Kara up and down. She said nothing, before turning back to the drink which had been placed in front of her. |

As the sun was starting to set and Meeka noticed the few townsfolk starting to wrap up their evening meals, and by nightfall most of them had wandered off home. A few other folk lingered in the bar, Meeka deemed them as out-of-town folk by the way they had dressed and the vibes they were giving off, as she was giving off the exact same vibes. A jingle of the bell at the front door interrupted her train of thought, and her eyes glanced in its direction. A young woman, dressed in dark and oversized clothes had passed through the door, and nodded sliently to a nearby waitress. It seemed as though the waitress knew what she had wanted, and scurried off to complete her order. Meeka locked eyes with the newcomer for a brief moment, then watched her move her gaze towards another young one in the room. This must be it, Meeka thought to herself. After the waitress had placed a drink infront of the young lady and returned to her duties, Meeka rose from her booth and made her way over. She took a seat next to the young lady and spoke with a whisper, only comprehendable to those who were close by, and turned her head slightly in her direction. "I've heard of a ship looking for a crew. I think I may be of some assistance." She turned her head slowly back in the opposite direction to check if anyone had caught wind of her conversation, and waited for a reply. Edited by HeaterDee, Sep 26 2012, 01:44 PM.

Kara met the others gaze directly. I have seen you somewhere... her thought drifted off as the older woman from the booth made her way over to the counter sitting on the other side. The mumble from that lady wasn't particulary audible but Kara could get some idea. She caught the strangers eye again. She had no definate instructions, just that she would respond to the usual signal. Kara's hands moved, stimulating certain patches, looking just like someone scratching an itch. A program activated and Kara directed the holo of a small blackbird directly ahead of the womans gaze. For a second it showed and then disappeared. Kara remained still, trying not to tense up. What she had done already was enough to land her in another cell. |

The young lady never turned to Meeka as she sat down and spoke, though it was clear that she must have heard what was said. A small smile crossed her face as she took a sip from the glass in front of her, a murky substance she'd never had to offer, and then she turned to look across at Kara. Still, nothing was said. Finally, after smiling once at Kara, and then to Meeka on her other side, the blonde woman stood up and held up a hand, motioning to the waitress behind the counter. "Ma'am?" The young girl nodded and moved down the bar, smiling as she approached the blonde woman. "Is something the matter?" The girl smiled sweetly as she asked, an unmistakable sense of naivety on her face. That quickly changed, however. Still smiling and silent the whole time, a revolver was slung out of the blonde womans jacket and she fired two rounds. The waitress was knocked back against the wall, crimson soaking into her uniform as she cried out, sliding to the ground. Before anyone could comprehend just what had happened, the blonde woman had turned the weapon and fired the remaining four rounds. Each one hit its target, one of the other patrons in the cafe. Five people hit, wounded or dead. And the lady just smiled. People started screaming and running for the door, front and back, and the blonde woman buried her spare hand under her jacket. She produced something small, metallic, and quickly flung it up in the air towards Kara. As the small thing floated upwards, she turned her other hand to Meeka, throwing the empty revolver straight at her. "Good luck, girls." The words were sadistic, sarcastic, the smile on her face still present. And then the grenade went off. |

"Mu gou!" Kara swore as the woman's revolver spat out and, as the grenade swung out of the others hand, she swung back off her chair and behind the corner of the bar counter, hoping desperately that it would be enough to sheild her. She grabbed her case, hugging it to her.
"cao di mu gou!" she swore again. Another sodding setup. |

The grenade went off only a foot away from where Kara had been sitting, but there was no explosion. Instead; a loud bang, a flash of light, and the room began to fill with smoke. The smoke stung their eyes and everyone present felt disorientated by the 'flasher', only able to see a few feet in front of them. The blonde woman was gone. |

"Thank the fates." Kara swore, pushing herself up off the floor. Her retina's were already giving her a floorplan of the place but the tears stung too much for her to truly focus on it. She stumbled over the fallen barstool and then bumped into someone else in the smoke. Despite the smoke it looked like the woman who had also come up to the bar. Kara pushed her ahead, heedless of the others reactions. "Move it. You want to stay here waiting for the local cops?" Kara was already moving towards the door and a way out. Despite the age of the place she was willing to bet that the local fire systems would be triggered by the amount of smoke - bringing down any kind of Mi Tian Gohn on anyone who could be thought of as suspect. She muttered to the other woman again, this time quietly. "Escape & Evade, Shao Jeh, just keep moving." |

Meeka's words went unanswered and were instead acknowleged with a smile and a glance at the girl across from Meeka. All the while nothing was said. The young lady then motioned towards the waitress and before Meeka could even think, the young lady had fired two rounds into the girl, and another four into some of the remaining patrons in the cafe. Everything started to go into panic. People were screaming and trying to flee from the woman, trying to get to safety. The young girl had then pulled out something small from her jacket, throwing it towards the young girl on the opposite side of Meeka. As it was midway in the air, the empty gun was thrown into Meeka's hands, and was left with but one remark;
Before Meeka could react, the grenade had gone off. Luckily for her, it was only a 'flasher'. Her eyes were stinging from the smoke, and her ears were ringing uncontrollably, and it wasn't until the young girl who had been apart of their "meeting" had run into her on the floor, kicking one of her ribs in the process. "Ta ma duh!!" Meeka exclaimed in pain. She didn't think this was the type of initiation she'd have to go through, and it hoped it would be worth it. Meeka could only just make out what the girl had said to her. She shook her head, trying to gain back her sight, and had found the gun lying right in front of her. She picked it up and tucked it into the back of her pants and made a start after the girl. "I think they want us to show them our worth. Time to put on a show!" Meeka remarked, pulling the gun out of her boots simultaneously. She was ready for this. She wanted in on The Vanguard, and if she had to kill innocents to do so, then she would. Sirens echoed through the slums streets, a small plume of smoke rising through the smashed windows and open door of the small cafe. As far as the two women could see, all the other patrons were either in hiding or had fled. Those who had been shot by the blonde lady were on the ground; some moving, some not. The smoke started to clear and they were able to get a grasp on the situation, the front and back doors of the small cafe both swung wide open to the darkening streets beyond. The Feds would be on top of them in no time, and there was no sight of the Vanguard, the blonde lady, or anyone who looked like they might be recruitment officers. On the counter top, where the lady had fired her shots, was a neatly folded piece of paper with a smiley face drawn on it. It stared at Meeka, at Kara. Screams came from outside. |

The smoke had started to clear, and the sounds of sirens had started to grow ever closer. As Meeka had finished speaking to the girl, a piece of paper had caught her sight. It had been folded neatly, and it had a small smiley face drawn ontop of it. The Young Blonde. Meeka looked at the young girl beside her and back towards the piece of paper. Instructions I hope, she though to herself. She went to pick it up and said to the young girl, "Best if we look at this when we don't have any uninvited guests" gesturing towards the Feds that would soon arrive. Meeka put the the note into her pocket and made a start for the back door. "I guess its time for your "Escape and Evade" plan" she said jokingly. Meeka started to get a thrill from the thought of all this, and started to hum to herself a little tune to get her ready for what was yet to come. Edited by HeaterDee, Sep 28 2012, 04:14 PM.

Kara barely nodded as she popped out of the doorway. She didn't even think - going left would pull them into some of the darker and seedier part of town. Including areas that weren't so hot on patrols in this neighborhood. Find a spot, park herself, read the message - if it was one. As she walked quickly, she triggered the attache case, pulling out a strap and throwing it over her shoulder as she pulled out one of it's heavy pistols. "Quickly" |

There was still shouts and screams of shock back in the diner and the street beyond it. The pair disappeared into the alley, eyes adjusting to the dark. The sun was fully hidden now, and the lamps lining the streets were few and far between. It was, after all, the slums of an already un-wealthy city. In one direction, the alley headed out to the main street they had come in. The other, it opened to a small back street that, as Kara had predicted, led deeper into the poorer part of town. Trash cans and piles of rubbish lined the alleyway. Not a soul was in sight. |

Kara carefully checked up and down the alleyway, keeping an eye out for the usual flotsam of humanity that might be around - and ensuring that no cameras or spy in the eye's were visible. Her voice was steady and calm as she turned to her erstwhile partner. "I am assuming that we were both at the bar for the same reason. Our guest left us a message. It would be sensible to examine it further." |

As Meeka followed the young girl down a series of quiet alleyways, she couldn't help but feel let down by the lack of gun fire. Yes she may not do well with hand-to-hand combat, but that doesn't stop her love of killing. As they rounded the corner and arrived in the quietest alley they had come to so far, they young girl turned and and spoke to Meeka. "That you're right," she responded, and proceeded to take out the paper from her pocket. She started to wonder what task would be up next, while she unfolded the paper, and wished so much that there would be bloodshed. |

As her new companion unfolded their only clue, Kara remembered glancing at the clock in the small diner as they fled. It had been only a few minutes before six o'clock. The sun was hidden and the small cities night life was coming to life. On the small piece of paper in Meeka's hands, a hand written string of numbers was scrawled on two lines. The first were clearly coordinates, the second was a time. The first, when plugged into any device with a GPS tracker in it, such as a cortex uplink, would reveal a pinpoint location on the opposite side of the slums. A restaurant, in fact. The second was simply a time: 1950. This was a deadline. Sirens started to echo through the city streets. |

"Interesting." Kara muttered, as she pulled out her battered cortex relay and called up its mapping program. It would be only moments until the map overlaid itself onto her retina implants. Can I trust this one? she wondered faintly. Everything was a bit too vague for her liking so far but maybe her mission was to bring this one to where... She shook the thought out of her head and looked at the rubbish filled alleyway ahead. "Glad I wore trousers, tonight." She felt something squash under her feet as a fetid smell rose to meet her. "and boots". She looked again at her new companion, highlighted briefly as a blue strobe light from a passing patrol craft illuminated the alley. "You coming? she asked as a pointer overlaid her view of the alley. |
