Whittier - Ganders Ridge The town, if it could be called that, was one of the more outlying settlements on the harsh, dusty rock known as Whittier. It wasn't really on the radar, more of a pit stop for folk traveling from the farm lands up to the city. The town itself was nothing but desert, a scattering of small shacks and a half hearted main street amongst the dunes. A few clicks West, however, was the edge of the Dakong jungle, a huge mess of wild that had never been tamed, mostly unexplored. The Blue Fiddle was Gander's main watering hole, a dingy old pub that catered to locals (all twelve of them) and travelers alike. Everything here was dirty, from the dust storms that so frequently hit, but it was an innocent kind of dirty. An old bar ran down one wall, a few locals snoozing against it in the afternoon heat that filtered in through the open double doors that led to the porch outside. There were tables scattered about, too, but it was in one of the booths against the back wall that Alex found himself. Across the table sat the dealer - his name was Cai, Alex recalled - a tall, lanky, bushy-bearded man who had a thick pair of spectacles and an unnecessarily old fashioned pair of braces holding up his suit pants. A jacket and vest which had both been removed, due to heat, idled on the spare seat beside him. In his hands was a small trinket of some kind; it looked to be porcelain, or similar, some hand carved item from a world long gone. The piece rotated in his fingers, over and over. "She is, indeed, quite something to behold. And you say there are more?" |

Aye. Just a small sample of a bigger collection. The one piece, alone, is nearly priceless. The collection all together, why. Can you imagine? He wiped the back of his gloved, hand across his forehead, wiping away another flood of sweat from his brow. Alex hated the heat but more often than not, these meeting required a certain level of discreetness. He smiled inwardly at the trinket in the lanky man's hands. It was a fine reproduction indeed, though Alex knew the real one would have much crisper details in the craftsmanship as well as a far superior gloss to it. Once they were properly cleaned that was. He leaned back, resting his arms behind his head. So. You interested? |

"Can you guess what kind of coin value the set might be worth?" Cai just smiled as his newest client spoke, likely ignoring anything he wasn't interested in hearing. His magnified bug eyes remained locked on the small piece that was rotating around his fingers. "And this one - I can take? In advance?" |

Yes. An advance. Consider it an act of good faith on my part. A promise of what's to come, if you will. He leaned across the table to speak quietly. I'd wager that piece, all by it'self, is worth more than any member of the High Council makes in a year. Likely even more. He leaned back again. Quite remarkable if you ask me. "And what of the others? Do you know how many?" The mans fingers started to quiver ever so slightly in excitement and he promptly placed the small item down on the tabletop, clasping his clammy hands together before him. |

If the entire set is intact, thirty-two in total. He took a sip of the smooth whiskey that had been waiting patiently in front of him for quite a spell before smiling again. He knew the man was barely able to contain his excitement. Now all he had to do is reel him in. The hard part was still to come. Setting a price was where the real challenge for the meeting would be. Alex was used to these meetings. He waited patiently for Cai's next move. |

Cai sat there thinking for a few moment, his hands clasped quietly on the table before him, staring at the small ceramic piece between the two men. "It's quite you offer you've brought me... I think we can do business." Suddenly he was trying, weakly, to hide his excitement, and it became evident that the time to talk money had finally arrived. As he opened his mouth again, an unusually cool breeze fluttered in through the main doors, turning Cai's head a moment. "Ah, what a welcome change." He closed his eyes for a moment, feeling the cool air against his face, before opening them again and giving his new client a serious look. "You know what that kind of breeze means at this time of day, yes?" Anyone who had even done a slither of reading about Ganders Ridge - or even Whittier in general - knew what it meant. A storm. Whether it was one of thunder or of sand, no one could say. But you could bet your bottom Credit it was on its way. "Right, anyway. Your... needs. Shall we discuss what this little expedition is going to take? What will you need from me and my... err, company?" |

A drop in the bucket to you, I'm sure. Alex waved a hand dismissively. I can provide my own equipment for the actual expedition. All I need from you is a transport into and out of the jungle. Well, and there's just the cost for my services. He smiled again, that smile that seemed to be able to charm anyone. He was already weighing where he should start the offer at or what kind of counter offer he should make if Cai made the first offer. Now was Wheelin' an' Dealin' time. |

Cai wrinkled his brow for a moment and took a sip from his own mug, which had mostly been sitting idle between the two of them during the exchange. His whiskey had gone warm, if not hot, though the trader didn't seem to mind, nor notice at all. "Very well. Yes. Your payment." When he spoke, the calculations had been done. Alex could tell. He'd heard a lot about Cai Sirrone, that the man was of little nonsense and would cut to the chase. It was a nice change to work with that type every once in a while, though the rumours of Cai's other reputation were still unsettled in the mans mind. "I think, maybe... forty square. A little up front, maybe, but the bulk upon deliver. That's a tidy..." He paused for effect only - even Alex had done the number crunching. "... one thousand, two hundred and fifty per piece. In cash, of course." He leaned back in his chair, re-arranging the glasses on his nose, and took another sip of the dry whiskey. |

Alex smiled. The opening offer was good. Not great but good. He didn't have to press terribly far to get more in the range of what he wanted. He did his own calculations with a nod. Well now. Mr. Sirrone, I like to think the level of professionalism that I bring to the table is worth a might more than you'd pay an errand boy to do this sort of work. This was one of the more entertaining parts of his job. Now, Taking into consideration that you've got your own means to move this collection off world on your own, and you've provided me with the location, and I like you. I can see you're a man of fine taste and an honest word. Let's say.. 56 square. one thousand, seven hundred and fifty each... He leaned in, for effect. IF the set is complete and intact upon delivery. If not then I'll take the 500 less on each of the ones that are intact. What say you? |

Cai nodded quietly to the proposition, taking a couple of small sips from his warm drink all the while, but never said a word as Alex laid out what he had clearly been expecting on this job. It wasn't unreasonable, his 'demands'. A minute slipped by. Then another. Finally, Cai stood up, re-adjusting the spectacles on his nose, and gave a single, solid nod. "Indeed, you drive a good point. I think this can be arranged... this, er, price that you put forward." He wiped his brow then reached for his suit jacket. The meeting was adjourned. "Yes, yes. Ok. Fifty Six square for the entire set. If not the entire set, then we can fall back on my original offer. Yes, yes. It sounds, good..." It seemed the dealer was more trying to convince himself that the deal had been a good one, not Alex. He nevertheless offered a hand towards Alex, after collecting his things, and reinforced it with a nervous smile. "I knew you'd be the right choice for this task." Outside the Blue Fiddle, the dusty afternoon sun beating down on him, waited a lone figure. He had been standing idle, leaning against the front of the small bar, for what seemed like hours, hoping the deal would soon be done. |

Alex stood as well, accepting the offered hand and giving it a firm shake. He knew many folk in the verse prized a firm handshake. It was something that was prized even back on Earth that was as he remembered history telling it. I assure you, Mr. Sirrone, you won't be disappointed. |

The large man stands outside the Blue Fiddle waiting for any sign from his employer, and old war buddy, that the deal he's waiting on is done or gone sour, honestly he didn't really care because in the end either way he's bound to see a bit of action. He hasn't been out of prison for long and the dusty air making him gag a bit while it tickles at his nostrils making him sneeze slightly. He slowly turns his head a bit, glancing into the door of the bar with a scowl on his face as he thinks to himself How long is this going to take? while he cracks his knuckles. |

"Indeed I won't." The words hung in the air as Cai released Alex's hand and made his departure, as if he was suggesting that disappointment would come at quite the price. "You may prepare your equipment and er, your crew, and then give my man a call on this number." He slid a scrap of paper onto the tabletop. "He should be able to get you into the jungle. After that, the path is yours to find." The man paid at the bar on his way out, taking his briefcase with him, and disappeared out the front double doors to the dusty street beyond. Alex noted that a small envelope stuffed full of Credits was left at the booth - Cai had expected such a price to be agreed upon. Inside was the full price for 6 of the agreed upon pieces. The rest would have to wait. He paid little heed to the large hulk of a man by the door, busying himself with a portable cortex uplink which he dialed on and then began talking, most likely to his own employer. |

He looks at the man exiting the bar with a quirk of his brow, half trying to pay attention to what's on the cortex, but knowing full well that if he was meant to know it would be shown to him. The large man ducking his way into the bar a few moments after that individual has left, looking over to see Alex sitting there at a table and walking towards his old war buddy. So, what's the job? he simply asks before taking a seat and rolling his shoulders with a few pops and cracks of joints. |

The entire exchanged had been missed by Ms Alex Guirun, seated a few booths down from where Xavier had headed when he entered. Guirun had dropped on Whittier almost a full month earlier, and not by her own accord. The ship she'd been flying on at the time, a transport boat registered as the Spiraculum Vitae, had come to the planet with less than honest intentions. Take a bit from some of the local companies, sell a bit to the poorer folk. There'd never been any mention of this the Alex, though, as she'd been but a passenger paying her way. When the revelations came out, she and the crew of the Spiraculum Vitae parted ways, perhaps not necessarily for the better. That had been a month ago and the young lady was still trying to sort herself out. She had few Credits, no income, and good intentions had only gone so far, especially in a place like Ganders Ridge (population: 376). But all of that was about to change. |

Alex waved a hand dismissively as he retook his own seat for the moment. Nothng overly exciting. Standard salvage. Delivery. Now there's where the excitement wil be if there is any. Got a plan though to keep us from being humped. Alex smiled, sliding his mug toward his buddy. Welcome to that if you like. I've had enough myself. |

Xavier sits down and glances across the table at his old friend with a smirk and a slight shrug. A large hand palms the mug and Xavier takes a long chug of the draught. Thanks. Anything we need to be worried about? he leans in and mentions in a more hushed tone to Alex, And how standard are you talking for salvage? Pick axes and hard labour or a few kilos of the good stuff? Xavier's face lights up a bit when he mentions the last option. |

Alex chuckled. Well it's a crashed ship as I understand. Torches might be enough. Considering the delicate nature of the antiques we're after I hope to not need any actual explosives. He rubed a finger across his chin in thought. Now to cover our tails at the delivery we might need a little something... He trailed off with a smirk. Edited by Khei, Sep 28 2012, 04:05 PM.

The large man leans back in his chair and thinks a bit, Crashed ship, you say? Any information about the ship? Xavier looks a bit sceptical at Alex for a moment, Just don't want to be bushwhacked. He finishes off the drink that Alex offered him and puts the mug down on the table before leaning forward again with a smirk, But, as long as you think the job's going to pay off, I'm in. Xavier saw that smirk on Alex's face and rumbles, Got something on your mind for that? |
