Wow, what's up with everyone having gone into Film studies? I know we desperately want a second season of Firefly, but at the sake of a generation of engineers?

Bit super jealous of you Khei. Writing novels whilst living in Canada? Leaving the dream! Married? Well, gotta take the good with the bad I suppose :P

Well I'm not in Canada yet. still stuck in the gawd awful Arizona desert but I expect to be up there by this time next year.

I don't have a ton of time for writing but when I do the text just pours out of me.

As for marriage, hell I may as well give it a shot. Even if it doesn't pan out nobody can say I didn't give it the good college try. Lol

Ah, Grav, there's a difference here I guess.

I'm at a film school. Different from doing film studies. Film school, at least down here in Adelaide, teaches you film the, y'know, proper way: by making lots of them. Lots of short films all year. Throw you in the deep end with professionals to help you along, make lots of films, learn it for realz. No dusty professors or tomes, no lectures, no exams - our grade is our screening at the end of the year (plus some formal checkboxes to arbitrarily check.)

I was never cut out to be an engineer. Physics comes well to me, but the specific math does not. I can roughly approximate many different things in Physics in my head, but the numbers, man... The numbers.

I'm writing a novel, too. It's coming along slowly, but I'm really enjoying the process. Sitting down with a hot cup of something in this cold, cold winter, getting comfy and warm, setting up some smooth, smooth jazz and cranking out some future noir fiction... Great fun. The almost-complete prologue can be found here if anyone's interested in giving a 7.5k word-count of detective fiction a whirl.

Living the dream of 'College Tries' right now, I guess you'd all say. Currently IN College, have been for the last 18 months, with 6 more to go. There have been many 'College Tries', but not for a lot of what you'd think. ;P

It's REALLY heartwarming to see so many of you again, some people I thought I'd never hear from again. I can't wait to see what happens...

Well Khei, guess you've got another 12 months before that jealousy kicks in :P Still that still sounds very awesome! So best of luck!

Wait Bal, you're saying you've to pick one or the other? Classical study of film or practical filming skills? Ouch. I can imagine all the cinematographers on day one, tracking the camera backwards and pulling in, creating some never before seen effect :P

Suppose it's like an explorer having all the necessary skills to lark about and survive, but only common knowledge of the history of exploration. Sure he could survive in the harshest conditions and have a hoot drinking his own urine, but only to end up discovering a big island that Columbus had originally stumbled upon (though, that seems to have worked fine for Bear Grylls).

You shooting on analog or digital (and so begins a debate of the ages...)?

Yeah, was never a big physics head myself, but space is just so fraking cool. Guess if yer not gonna get to study it or go there, might as well make the odd film about it!

I'm with Bal on this, truly chuffed so see you, no, us all together in one place again. Honestly never thought I'd see the day, and with RP kicking off tomorrow, things are about to get pretty damn interesting around here.

I'm not saying that, Grav. ;P I said it didn't follow the academic route of teaching film, not that it excluded it entirely. Film technique and other associated studies DOES come a long with it. It's just unlike actual Film Studies courses where they never so much as pick up a camera. It's practical skills THEN backed by theoretical knowledge, like all skills-based tasks should be taught, in my eyes.

Also, we've done both. Film's overly expensive, far too difficult and unwieldy, and far too slow to use on such small films. If you're doing Jaws or something, sure, but in my eyes film's just a colourscape and specific grain effect that you can, with care, apply to clean, precise digital footage nowadays - we more than have the technology, yet few get it right. We learn on digital, though - skip tape entirely because taaaaaape sucks. Anyway :P

Can't wait to start RPing, but I really, y'know, need to get my character hammered out!! XD

I never actually played here (wasn't even playing PBP when the site closed), but I know most of you from FS. I saw the FS Facebook post about this, and figured that I'd skip on by. I'm not an original LiSer, but if y'all will have me, I'm game.

Thnx Grav ^^

I think I've seen one or two names around that I remember from the original LiS. I think I saw Markus Boa around somewhere and even saw one other of the CFC cards I retooled way back when lol.

Otherwise everyone's either changed characters or are new faces to me XP

As for Khei.. I think I've got her pretty much set up the way I want her.. I need to go in there and edit the profile to correct the paragraphs since the post was written on my PS Vita originally and the gorram thing doesn't have a tab button on it digital keyboard.

On that note I need to make a new avatar.. Or retool a new CFC card.. She's not exactly a Star Forge Private this time around anyway XP

All in all tho I think I like how she's set up thus far.

I hope I'm not gonna be too rusty at forum based Role Playing. Haven't done much of it in years.

Yeah Bal, sounds about right, no point in doing one without the other. Not sure what Film Studies means over Stateside, but in Ireland it's all inclusive. I know what you mean though, just the academic study film. I've seen those courses, but they're usually crazily specific over here, like Genre Studies or Sexuality in Film. Downside to being a small island full of messers is there's only about a dozen worthwhile institutions offering quality degrees. I once remember seeing a college level jam making course, just to put this in perspective.

Yeah, I'm a digital fan as well, though a close friend who's a DP is just in love with film stock. Shoots like that are always a hoot of an argument. You're totally right, with modern colour correcting software, a careful hand, and several hours of swearing, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to make a properly lit digital scene look identical to it's celluloid counterpart.

FS is still going eh? Suppose miracles can happen! ;)

Khei, is that what those avatars are called, CFC Cards? You made one for my character Cai waaaaaay back when during the old Starforge war. Good times man. After LiS I briefly RP'd via another medium as Cai and a few others, really changed my RP style and attitude, so decided to start fresh with a new chap this time around. Plus the pilots spot looked to already be taken, and I hate having a backseat driver!

Yes I actually still have all those old things on my Hard drive lol.

Yeah they're just edited sprits from an old NeoGeo game called "Card Fighters Clash". All the cards are SNK or Capcom characters. The fad of "retooling" them to look like another character crops up now and then. I've always liked it. Lol you should see how much of a b*tch it is to turn them into anthropomorphic characters O.o

No joke. I remember coming across that course myself. :)

I'm not sure I was here long enough for everyone to remember me. I was doing my undergrad in Dublin when I joined. Since '07 I finished my BA in English and Maths, got an MA in Theatre & Drama Studies, took a year off to work and then went to Oxford University to qualify as a Maths teacher.

Drama to Maths? I know actors a right fraking pain, but enough to turn you to numbers? :P Although if I remember correctly, eventually Maths gets to be full of letters too. That was a fun LC.

Oxford? Snazzy! Sounds to be an amazing chapter in your future memories PR.

What're ya doing with yourself these days? Teaching the Brits how to calculate how much debt the Olympics is gonna end up costing 'em, Irish Shtyle?

Funny you should say that -- actually did do a project with a class of kids about the cost of the Olympics.

I miss the drama for sure, but then again there is plenty of drama in a classroom. ;) I've got a job in a school in a small village just outside Oxford for September.

A small ragtag group of children soldiers, loose in the English countryside, doing god knows what kind of damage, and all without any parental consent forms.

Sounds fun. You could be the Irish Kony?

Hey guy

Thoght I'd add my own 2 pence (English guy right here) and all that jazz

Nothing much really, since I last left, I got a job at a post production company (following the current, I did film studies trend that seems to be happening here) did running for 2 years, the company went under due to recession and I decided to leave the land life and worked on a cruise ship for two years looking after ungrateful American teenagers... Since march, come back to landline, trying to find another job running but it aint successful so may or may not go back to ship or go into teaching (media studies) but just trying to get all my friends weddings out of the way first....

Yea, went over to FS, stayed with them until i went to sea, and since coming back have gone back there where I found a thread about LiS reboot, wondered why I wasn't invited until I dusted off the old email and found it...

So yea I'm back, as a character I only played here really and yea, trying something different as I usually play the same character everywhere....

Planning on getting a post up in the next couple of days, glad to see some d faces that didn't make the switch to FS....

Lol I'm trying to restrain myself these days.. Inventing Characters seems to come naturally to me. Back on the MZDM (LONG before Firefly/Serenity ever hit the screen) I have 30+ characters. So yeah trying to keep it down to one or two is REALLY showing a lot of self control on my part XP

Wow.

A solid month ago all I had on my mind was this place, how to resurrect the community, the old familiar faces (metaphorical faces)... and then all of a sudden, I pop in here out of sheer luck, and look what's happened.

I guess I better jump up and second the comments Nick made. I'm not too fond of certain memories, but in a way I really found 'the old days' to be one hell of an adventure to look back on. But I'm sure feathers may have been rustled and I hope none of that is of importance anymore.

It barely seems like it's been that long since the place closed down, but I suppose in retrospect a lot's changed. Not sure how interested ya'll would be, because I was pretty young back in the day and didn't have a lot of life context to add to anything. But nevertheless, I'll fill in my gaps.

I left LiS still in school. Since then I've finished that (graduated, some of you folk might call it) and jumped into the workforce. Nothing exciting - currently working in State government in an 'unskilled' role (paper pushing) for one of the Minister's offices (and the politics game, from where I'm standing, is far from enticing despite former expectations), but looking at jumping into the IT business in the next few years.

I've moved out of home, looking at home ownership in the next 12 months, and spent October of last year in Nepal teaching English in a Buddhist monastery. For the future, I'm looking at study and more travel, most likely not in that order.

Life's pretty decent. I've had some terrible times since the community of LiSbians disbanded, but lately I've been feeling positive as frak and just starting to get a handle on this new part of my life that actually means something. The 20's.

But yeah, I'm definitely feeling nostalgic to see this place, the familiar names, and mostly of hearing Grav's one liners. Really glad to see everyone here and kicking. Might even join in the game. We'll see how time goes.

Great to see each and everyone of you guys.

Welcome back Tristan/PMD!

See, told ya your efforts wouldn't be in vain. What's that they say about a butterfly on one side of the world causing a hurricane on the other? Well maybe your recent efforts somehow triggered LV back into LiSbian mode :P

Wouldn't be strangest thing I've ever heard of. Now write up a char and lets get rolling. There's fun to be had in them thar hills.
