It seemed that he thought he had made a sale. He took the filter from her hands and headed towards the front of the cargo bay. She smiled, and headed towards him. "Hold on, 200 credits? What if I buy a few more parts," she asked. It would be nice to finish a one stop shop place, and this guy seemed pretty honest. They could probably work out a deal. "Could you help out in the way of a couple of power couplings, and a coolant line? Just a few meters of it, I need to do another patch job on it," she explained. "Think we could figure out a deal?" She asked with a nice smile. This kid might be able to be sweet talked. Or, at least she could get a new friend. A new friend would be nice. Having a connection in this area would probably be helpful in the future. |

Monte and Africa arrived in the bar and settled their gear down beside their barstools. Monte called the barkeep over and ordered drinks. It had been a bit of a journey, first from Motherload to Greenleaf, and then on to Vebena and the Baroness. Full Circle, Monte thought. "Sheesh, girl. Been a wicked few weeks, nes pa? Do we want to drift a bit or jump on a new job right off? I see there's a few postings available." |

The bartender nodded, setting his tablet back down in some unseen cabinet below the bar, and started about preparing a few meet'n'greets for the newly arrived Captain. As he scrolled through contacts, the second question arose, and he gave Nick a wink. "Sharp man. 'course, I don't give folk the privilege of my charming helpfulness for nothing, not at all. Don't you worry, though - I'm a fence and the ones on the other side pay my dues. Nothing out of yer pocket, Captain." He nodded with his head towards a security door on the far side of the room as he mentioned 'the other side' and then turned away to see about arranging something for this new patron. "Gimme a few, ok. One of the girls can fix you up if you need another drink." He gave a quick comment to one of the serving girls, gesturing to the comms device in his hand, before departing to find somewhere for a more private conversation.
Joshua had already gone about packaging up the new filters with a confident smile on his face, though his ears pricked up like a junkyard dog at the mention of potential further purchases. The entire time there hadn't been any more foot traffic through the small trade post, so Sam had a good impression of the quality of business as of late. "Power couplings, we can do. Hell... if the old man don't show up, I might be able to throw a few in as a bonus. You being so kind and all. Depends how many you need. That sure as hell justifies 200, I'd say." He gave her a friendly flash of those pearly whites and finished tying up a package. A moment later, he disappeared behind the counter, searching for something to carry it all in, and resurfaced just as fast with a grease stained rucksack from some storage unit down below. "Now, a coolant line, on the other hand, might cost ya. What's been the issue, anyways? I'd recommend trying some patches if it's just a crack here or there. You know how 'xpensive those things can be."
One of the young ladies working the bar tended to the new arrivals, serving up drinks and passing down a holopad that had some of the most recent going-ons flashing across its screen. News bites, advertisements, job postings. It was clear their appearance didn't full anyone - wayward travelers, looking for the next stop. |

Nick watched the man and the woman sit down at the bar. He sized them up, noticing their haggard looks, their travel-weary clothing, and their bags. They seemed just the type he was looking for. Whether they needed passage or work, it didn't matter, either which way, they could be of use. He stood up, brushed off his pants from the dusty barstool, picked up his glass and moved down the bar, along the row of stools to where they sat. Now the introduction, how to go about that. Should he open with a witty line? Or something less clever? Honesty was probably best, if they weren't interested, he'd move on. "'Scuse me folks, you two lookin' for work or passage or anything?" |

Monte, "Sheesh, girl. Been a wicked few weeks, nes pa? Do we want to drift a bit or jump on a new job right off? I see there's a few postings available." Africa ordered tea for herself and began to look over the holipad. "Unless you have some credits in some place I have not been privy to, then I think something that pays might be a good idea." She rubbed two coins together, one of which to pay for their drinks. Then she made a motion to indicate that she no longer had 'two coins with which to rub against each other." All the while she beamed a smile. She was in love again, with him. This time it was forever. Nick, "Scuse me folks, you two lookin' for work or passage or anything?" Africa looked him over. Monte waited for her judgement. The man that had approached them had the look of honest to her. He looked her in the eye, but it was not forced or practiced. Easy and true. After one little twitch and tilt of her head, she was sure. She turned and nodded in the affirmative to Monte. ![]() |

Monte noticed the man sliding up next to them, and over his shoulder a vaguely familiar face in the background. Africa turned to look the man over and then turned back and nodded at Monte. Monte caught the glint of happiness in her eyes and it warmed his heart. "Seems we are ... looking for work, that is. We're both fair at the machinery; I also do tech work and can handle security as well." He stretched his shoulders, revealing the twin shoulder holsters tucked under his leather jacket. "You have a ship you're crewing? We just got back from delivering one to a new crew. She was a beaut. " Monte took a brief moment to try to catch the eye of the man at the table. They had done a job or two back when. Blaine? |

Nick smiled and leaned in. He nodded along as the man continued to speak. Security and technical skills? They'd do just fine, especially for the kind of work he had in mind. They seemed the hearty sort, the kind who weren't likely to shy away from hard work, weren't likely the sort of people to desert, to complain. They seemed just want he sort of people he'd need.
"I do, I'm Nick Hunter, Captain of the Valorous, she's an aurora class transport ship. We're on the hunt for work, and I think having a few more tradespeople would be a good asset. What do y'all think?" |

Sam walked back to the bar, a bounce in her step and a crate in her arms. "Nick!" She yelled, with a big smile. "Nick, look what I got!" With little care of her surroundings, she bounced into the bar, and towards her brother and the others. Across one cheek was a strip of grease, and it was as though light was coming off of her. She plopped down the crate on a bar stool, as she started rifling though it. "Look, new filters, some replacement coolant lines, even power couplings! And, and, look at this," She dug deeper in, moving the used parts aside, before coming up with a weird looking cylinder with several offshoots. "Do you see this Nick? Look at this beauty! It's a genuine, first generation, Aurora-class, thrust capacitor! Like, imagine the energy we could store locally!" The girl excitedly looked it over, flipping it over and over again. "Like, all the energy lost transferring from the engine room to the thrusters, forget about it! This is going to make the ship so much more efficient, like, imagine, we are never going to have to get gassed up again!" She hadn't pulled her eyes off of the piece of machinery. "Looks like it's going to be smooth sailing, and, so much energy saved!" She then pushed it over to him. "Look at it! They don't make them like this these days!" She then realized who was standing around, and that she had totally interrupted whatever they were talking. "Who are these guys? New travelers or something?" She couldn't stop smiling. The deal she just got! This ship was going to be the best in the verse! No one will ever be able to call their ship better! Not with these parts! |

Africa Chamberlain watch the young woman, that one could quickly presume was this Captain' chief engineer. While Africa was not prone to such excitement over the inanimate objects of a space ship, she did admire the raw exuberance of anyone that took pride in what they did and how they did it. She look the piece of equipment over. Not quite and engineer, far from it; but she'd seen such bright and new parts rarely. And that was in the core. Learning to rough it in the black had been the hardest thing to learn. "Titanium joints, with the ceramic threading?" she asked the engineer as she also offered her hand. "Africa Chamberlain, welder by trade, but mechanic's assistant." She looked to Monte with a smile. "My companion Monte is more the engineer, with emphasis on the tech side." "Your Captain," she looked at Nick, "I presume, has offered to hire us on."

Monte too was impressed by the display of hardware in the box. He broke into a big grin as Sam was showing off the old Aurora-class, thrust capacitor. "Haven't seen one of those in a goat's age. Of course, we'll have to modify the thruster back feed software to accommodate it; shouldn't be that hard. I'm Monte. As my friend has said, more the tech wizard than a grease monkey, but I can throw a torque spanner as well as the next. Yes, we're hiring on. Not too impressed with staying in one spot at this point." He tilted his head slightly, his eyes drifting back to Blaine sitting in the corner. He just couldn't quite catch the man's eye, and he didn't want to be disrespectful to his new employer to break away and seek out his old friend. |

Nick looked up at the jumping girl with the box of parts. He rolled his eyes. Ai ya. If she would just calm down, maybe she'd attract less attention. This wasn't the sort of place where attention should be garnered. This was the kind of place people should slip away from. "Shhhh," Nick hissed, gesturing down with his hand. Samantha was undeterred. She continued shouting.
Nick stood up quickly and looked around, and put his hand on her arm. She seemed to notice his mild alarm. Her voice lowered.
He was about to speak, about to explain, about to ask Sam to bi-zway, when the girl, visibly beautiful, Nick was beginning to notice, spoke up.
"That's correct. Once we talk a little about prices, jobs and the like. I'd love to work with these people, but the bigger question is; do they want to work with me? I'm sure I'm not the easiest to work with." He gestured for a round of drinks, and sat back down. Sam set down the box of equipment on the table, and Nick peered over inquisitively. She'd done well. Really well. She should be proud. He should be proud of her. Here she was, actively seeking validation, actively seeking her older brother's support. He couldn't deliver though. He wouldn't. At least not in a big way. Maybe a smaller gesture. The man seemed impressed with Sam's parts.
Nick extended his hand and shook Monte's. Nick looked up at Sam and nodded. "This is my sister, Samantha, she's my mechanic, and my first officer," Nick said and reached forward to the crate, looking inside. He was never good at this praise thing. "...this...this is good." He knew she'd be excited, overjoyed, perhaps that here he was showering her with praise. For Nick, this was a shower. Time to reel it back in. He clapped twice. "Now, get over there and get these parts installed. Ma-sheung." He looked over at the girl, the very, very pretty girl with Monte and smiled a winning handsome smile. "...and you are?" |

The barkeep comes back from his back room and nods at Nick. Stepping around the bar, he walks up close and slips a paper into Nick's hand. "Might be the contract you're looking for. Needs a transport to Ariel. Good pay. Contact him for a meet and greet." |

Nick looked down at the paper handed to him. He unfolded it carefully and read it quickly. Discreet transport to Ariel, and he was right, the pay was good. They could use the work. In a moment, he unanimously decided to take it. He folded the slip of paper and tucked it into his breast pocket. He turned and looked back up at the bartender and nodded, smiling briefly. "So how do I reach this contact? I imagine I'll send him a wave from space once we depart." |

Nick nodded to the bartender. "We'll meet him here," he said, standing up and adjusting his gun belt. He re-rolled his right sleeve and pointed toward the door, nodding to his sister and jerking his head. He gestured with a thumb over his shoulder. "Sam, you're with me. Leave the box of parts with the new folks. New folks, sit tight. We'll be right back." |

"Africa Chamberlain." She repeated for their new Captain. He seemed to be sizing up half a dozen things at once. Monte and her, his somewhat discomfort in complementing his sister on her recent acquisition. But he was honest about it. There was nothing that suggested falsehood or distrust. An honest man looking at what was in front of him, weighing options, looking for the best good opportunity. She smiled as he smiled at her. Monte knew it meant only what it was; she trusted this new friend. As the conversations continued, the Captain and his sister/first mate would deal wtih business; and they were to be trusted with some valuable new acquisitions for the ship. So Captain Hunter had an instinct and intuitive side to him. Rather he knew it or not, he'd taken them into his somewhat closer inner circle based on nothing more than a few words among them. "Yes Captain." she said. Already loyalty was established. Her own intuitions took hold. Monte would see them in her. And that felt wonderfull. That he would immediatly trust her instincts. 'God above it was good to be loved by this man.' ![]() |

Monte watched as Nick and Sam headed back to the backroom. Business as necessary. Leaving Africa and him in charge of the crate of engineering parts was a good sign that they had earned trust. He gave Africa a brief kiss on the cheek and then nodded at the man sitting in the far corner. "I see an old friend. I'll just be a moment." He picked up the bottle on the bar and walked over to Blaine. Setting the bottle down on the table, he dropped into an empty chair at the table. "So, man, what's up with you? Still looking for a way out of here? Sorry to hear about the Rose. Bad time, there." The name on the contact is Ravi Vukic. Shortly after Nick and Sam enter the backroom, a slender, well dressed man entered from the back door, identified himself and settled into one of the easy chairs formed up into a semi-circle. Two heavier built men followed, but took up positions at the back door and the door leading back into the bar. "I understand you are looking for a contract. I have a rather, delicate delivery to Ariel. I will pay handsomely, and require the tightest of security and ... prefer no Alliance interference. " |

Sam looked up as Nick volenteered her to come with him and leave her parts. It wasn't that she didn't trust the new guys, it was just that she barely knew them. She worked hard to get those parts, and she didn't want them broken or used, or really touched in anyway. Then again, they had said they were once mechanics, so, maybe they wouldn't be that bad. "Back in a jiffy," she said to the two as she stood up and followed nick into the back room. A well dressed man sat down in front of them, as two well built men went to guard the doors. Sam swallowed hard. She didn't exactly feel comfortable with the muscles, and even though it wasn't exactly said, there seemed to be an implied threat. But, Sam knew her brother wouldn't let anything happen to her. He would take care of her. She knew this was the kind of situation to just shut up and let Nick do the talking. She knew not to speak unless spoken to. And hopefully, Nick wouldn't drag her into this. |

At the mention of interference, Nick stood up a little straighter, his back a little more rigid. These men, by their size and their stances, clearly were not comfortable with levity. He could behave. Sam seemed tense as well, she knew what to do, to sit still and wait for when he'd need backup. Nick nodded along. "You just said all of my magic words, delicate, handsomely paid, and no alliance interference. If that's what you need, my ship and I are the ones to do it. We're discreet, efficient, and somehow always manage to avoid the Alliance patrols." He had an inkling question, he wanted to know what the cargo was, but knew he couldn't, or rather shouldn't ask. Sometimes, folks wanted secret cargo transported without telling the captains what was in the containers. He wasn't sure, but didn't want to ruin such a chance. "When can your people bring the cargo over? My crew'd be happy to do it also, if you'd prefer." |

Africa took a nearly subconscious note as to where their new bosses had went; and any other movements in the tavern. Then Monte moved in the other direction to talk to an old friend. The kiss warmed her cheek. After a sip of what seemed to be slighter over aged tea she checked the parts; examined the packing and crates to ensure they were secure and ready for transport to the ship. Sitting comfortably on the bar stool she settled into a quiet reflective moment of mindfulness. Her mind at ease yet fully aware of her surroundings. A calm of meditation and yet observation at the same time. Her body suggested restful ease, yet she remained she was aware. And ready. |
