bigla ko na lng nakita to sa net nung may hinanap me.... enjoy In this blog entry from my Koreanovela mentor Rizza, she mentioned that it took her one week before she was able to recover from watching Dae Jang Geum aka. Jewel in the Palace because she found other TV series - be it Korean or otherwise - too shallow. To be quite honest, I thought she was overreacting. Now, after watching Dae Jang Geum, I just have to say: She’s right. Dae Jang Geum was so well-made - that’s an understatement - that you’ll really end up being very critical of every series you’ll see after that. The thing with DJG is that the plot twists and turns were so well-thought of that everything is logical and believable (at least, during that era. Now, it’s just amusingly ridiculous.). I always find myself exclaiming, “how the hell did the writer thought of that???” so many times in the entire duration of watching it. Now here’s the thing: I’ve always been a nitpicker. I always try to use my brain whenever I watch something. The bad thing is, Dae Jang Geum made it worse. I used my brain while watching TV (which, I realized, is a bad thing coz it’s not called an idiot box for nothing) and I became a chronic nitpicker. And the unfortunate butt of my nitpicking just had to be Rain’s - make that Jeong Ji Hun’s - latest drama, I Jukil Numoi Sarang aka. IJUKSA aka. A Love to Kill (or The Love of Death or This Love I Want to Kill or This Damned Love or whatever it is they want to call it). In fairness, I tried liking it. Rain is in this drama, and as a fan, I want to give it my full support. However, as most people who know me can attest, I’m not a blind follower. If I wanna criticize my idol, no one can stop me. That doesn’t mean I don’t like that artist anymore; I just wanna point out what I don’t like about his work or whatever. There’s nothing wrong with that, right? IJUKSA is one drama that requires you to put your brain in hibernate mode in order to fully enjoy it. It scores high in production values (well, except for that booboo where they failed to notice that the boom mike can be seen on the reflection on the car window, and the CPR scene where Rain as Kang Bog Ku applied CPR on the wrong part of the girl’s chest, which could actually kill her instead of revive her) but the screenplay fails miserably in the logic department. The plot, while overly used in other dramas, particularly in Filipino movies, revolves around this guy whose brother was put in perpetual coma because of a girl, so he hates this girl so much and vows to avenge his brother by making this girl’s life miserable. However, he fell in love with the girl, and that’s where the complication arises. Of course, there’s the mandatory Other Guy and Other Girl to complicate things further. Like I said, the plot is overused, so I kinda have this thing running in my head and knowing how Korean drama tends to be so cliched, I more or less have expectations on the outcome of the story. I don’t need to use my brain to figure out what’s gonna happen. I’m basically watching it for two reasons: (1) I wanna know how they are going to present the drama; and (2) I wanna see Rain act. However, I made the mistake of watching Dae Jang Geum and after 70 episodes, my brain went haywire. Poor IJUKSA is now suffering from the after-effects of it. I ended up looking for logic - in a Korean drama, no less - and unfortunately, this drama reeks of unbelievable twists and turns. It’s like the characters are not thinking at all. The following are just some of the results of my nitpicking from watching Episodes 1-6 of IJUKSA. Please take note that the drama is currently ongoing in Korea and Episode 7 will still be shown next week. Things could still change. However, I’m not counting on it. In the story, actress Cha Eun Suk (CES, played by Shin Min Ah) is desperately in love with Kang Min Gu (KMG, played by Kim Young Jae) who is the brother of Kang Bok Gu (KBG, played by Jeong Ji Hun/Rain) but she doesn’t know that MG and BG are brothers (I had to mention that coz it plays a big part in the story). But, eversince she became a famous actress, MG left her, I don’t really understand why, but I think it has something to do with ES’ annoying - and I mean ANNOYING - stepmother who kept on telling him to stay away from her daughter coz he’s not worthy, yadda yadda yadda… So anyway, ES was seeking him out, but he kept on hiding from her. Now it just so happens that she got mistakenly involved with this rich scion of a businessman and to save his family from embarassment, he announced in public that he and ES are engaged. MG saw the announcement, and fell off a building because of that (hehe, that’s Korean drama for you!) which turned him into a human vegetable. Now the thing is, when MG fell off the building, he was with his long-lost brother BG whom he saw after 10 years. So BG thought the reason why his brother fell off the building was because of ES, so he ended up hating ES. (That was the short explanation. To fully appreciate his ‘hatred’, you gotta see episodes 1-2 where the plot was set-up for the viewers) He vowed to avenge his brother’s fate by making her life miserable. Now it just so happens that someone offered him to become her bodyguard (or was it the bodyguard of her fiancee?), and he even paid that person just to make sure that he will be guarding ES. So in effect, that means he has something planned for her, right? Meanwhile, BG’s friends and pseudo-girlfriend (another long explanation for this one but I’m too tired to explain, so…) decided to sell MG and ES’ photos to ES in order to make money for MG’s hospital bills (or so they said). Since she has no idea that MG is now a veggie, she thought MG betrayed her and only wants to screw her out for money. So now, she hates MG, the guy she was obsessed with before. Are you following this? Good. ES hates her former BF. Fortunately, she has this new hot bodyguard who’s out to make her life miserable. I don’t know what exactly his plan is, if he has any, but it seems at first that part of the plan is to make her fall for him. So when she suffered from chronic hiccups caused by a traumatic experience when she witnessed her mom getting killed by North Korean spies while picking up seashells in the dead of night (again, that’s Korean drama for you), he kissed her. There were several analyses made on why he kissed her. Some said he saw her being sad and all, so he followed her and because of pity he kissed her. Now this is a guy who seems to have a plan to make this girl miserable, why the heck would he kiss her out of pity? My theory, of course, is that it is part of the plan to make her fall for him and when she does, he’ll dump her or something. Another theory - also mine - is that he just wanted to cure her hiccups. ![]() Because of that kiss, ES can’t stop thinking about her bodyguard. The same bodyguard who dragged her all the way to his brother’s hospital room door and she didn’t even bother knowing where they are and why the heck did he drag her all the way there. She just asked, ‘where are we?’ Duh. She got sooo smitten by the hot bodyguard that she can’t stop thinking about the kiss, she even sought him out to the gym where he played sexual mind games with her (which further confirms that he seems to have a plan) and she even tried to save his life from the Korean mafia. All within 6 episodes of the series. And they didn’t even say a month has passed or whatever. Based on how the episodes unfold, it seems she only knew this guy for about two weeks or so - she can’t even remember if she knows his name! - and she’s already following him around like a cat in heat. Hello, how quickly did she forget about her former boyfriend! One of my Bi’er friends say I should give her a break coz she was so hurt by her presumed betrayal by MG, and then this guy came in, saved her from being almost ‘raped’ by her fiancee (which is just about any bodyguard should do) and gave her a hot kiss, so she naturally would fall easily for the new guy. Nyek?? I have a term for that: she’s a SLUT. Now Bok Gu… this guy has a pseudo-gf; a girl who saved his life when they were younger and she ended up having burn scars on her neck because of him, so he was indebted to her for life. He gave up the one girl he loved for her. But he’s willing to give their ‘relationship’ a chance, so he tried kissing her. BUT! The hot kiss with ES flashed in his mind and he ended up not kissing her. Where the heck did that come from??? I thought all he thinks about ES is revenge and now he’s thinking about how he kissed her??? And there were times when he is acting as if he is protecting her not because he is a bodyguard but because he wants to protect her, period. Some say he is doing that for his brother. But remember! He HATES HER. He vowed to make her life miserable. Why the heck would he protect her for the sake of his veggie bro? Something is lacking in logic somewhere. Then in the previews for Episode 7, it was shown that ES and BG will be dating like regular couples, but the website preview says it’s part of BG’s revenge plot (Oho! So he has a revenge plot after all!) but how do you explain ES giving him her necklace and he becomes ‘touched’ by the gesture? And again, how do you explain the kiss? How do you explain him suddenly using his body to protect ES from being attacked by the mafia even if he’s already badly beaten up? Some say it’s bodyguard’s instinct, but with the love theme being played in the background and all, that’s not what the scene is trying to convey. It’s like the aim of the PD and the writer is to confuse the hell out of the (thinking) viewers. I actually got a massive headache after Episode 6. After all that long rambling, I came to this conclusion: The only way to make myself enjoy this drama is to SHUT DOWN MY BRAIN AND JUST WATCH. End note: I’m also currently watching Loveholic on VCD but since that series is boring as hell, I don’t even have the energy to nitpick. |

Sakto. *nodnod* I'm intrigued with Dae Jang Geum though. But heck, not even wild rampaging tyrannosaurs on bloodlust can make me watch Koreanovelas with Tagalog dubs... *tries to download English-subbed episodes* |
