Since these topics have been gathering a lot of views and good remarks, let's merge these commentaries into one topic so it would not clutter up the pinned section of the agit standings thread ayt? Thanks to Aquiliad.

The War Rages on, July 29,2005

The little Hitlers of the Empire..

While the more conservative of the Imperials are struggling to feign innocence and salvage favorable relationships with the independents, the hard-liners among them are choosing an opposite route. The latter takes a seemingly acquiescent stance, opting instead to flaunt their power. With their bold gestures and unmitigated claims of dominion, they try to instill fear among the rest of the populace and at the same time appear to be utilizing the method of reverse psychology. Aside from being able to recklessly push their weight around, with this tactic they are able to circumvent the hypocrisy that the more conservative among them endure,(or maybe they really just don't know much about their comrades) while having the room to deny everything(within reason) and even shamelessly try to take the moral highground just in case a great upheaval is ignited and the powers-that-be become even a little bit more attentive than they usually are. A wise move, I must admit. After all, they have nothing or noone to fear but some of those whom they bought the power from suddenly growing a conscience. And I doubt that would happen anytime soon.

The little Hitlers of the Evil Empire bitch-slaps Loki saying, "Yes, I am Evil...what are you going to do about it?" The swastika serves the Evil Empire just right. Hitler must be beaming with pride down in hell right now.

The realization of apparent desperation leaves one with very few choices. For some, it unleashes flashes of genius and for the unfortunate, self-destruction. One house, finding itself alienated from most of the independents due to their bold escapades, has already sold their souls to the devil and declared themselves vassals of the self-proclaimed hegemon. Maybe they're just bidding their time, taking the role of conquered while gaining enough strength to strike at the heart of the aggressor. Or maybe they have been lured by the opportunity of safer plunder under the wing of the evil empire. Whatever it may be, it's worth remembering that they must be prepared for when the devil decides to collect its dues.

The struggle continues..

The Evil Empire's absolute dominion over the world of Midgard looms ever closer as every siegeday passes. Only two fronts were left largely unconquered after the previous siegeday. Al de Baran, the powerbase of the empire, was virtually unassailable. A small pocket of resistance remained in Prontera, to be easily stamped-out as Onslaught consolidates its forces and reinforcements flow from the Capital.

Payon city, on the other hand, seemed to be unconquerable seeing as the house of Unholy, the third superpower, refused to be intimidated this time, instead opting to spit at the face of its vassals, driving them off and continually strengthening their hold on the city. The Empire, still trying to keep its pride intact, did not reinforce their "brothers-in-arms" and curiously backed down from Unholy's insolence. Probably because it will take too much of their energy to beat Unholy, losing much of their empire in the process(especially if Unholy decides to cooperate with the independents instead). Thus, the Empire gets its ass handed to it and for the time being, the citizens of Payon are forced to watch an anxious stand-off.

Only the citadels of Geffen were left for refuge and here the independents were regrouping after losing ground to the Imperials. The Loki Alliance was in the forefront, claiming 3 forts to house their weary but ever vigilant soldiers. Epitome took one as their own, content in watching events unfold and keeping out of the way of the Imperials. However, the Empire still gained a foothold on this city too as EBAK conquered the remaining fort.

The situation seemed hopeless for the independents then. Quite frankly, I wondered how long they would be able to fight on, seeing as some of them continue to fight amongst themselves even as the wicked war-machine rolls over them.

However, this week brings surprising developments(for me, at least). The independents dare to strike at the heart of Imperial territory and LoD, with 6 guilds armed to the teeth but probably atrophied from lack of use in the past sieges, loses a castle. AnL, one of the Empire's nemeses, resurfaces and takes the fight to them along with a coalition of guilds who got tired of being pushed around.

With the heartland under siege, the Empire is unable to crush the resistance in Prontera. It seems that Onslaught alone cannot do it. Etivac and Rage soldiers on to the very end and denies the lower left corner of Prontera from the Empire.

In Geffen, the Loki Alliance continues to drive away the invader in their newfound homeland but Ebak, living up to its name, stubbornly refuses to be scraped off the heels of their boots. Epitome remains noncommittal but defiantly protects their territory as the Empire incessantly shits on their yard.

Payon is a different story. Unholy hands one of its castles to an independent as their forces contract to prepare for the inevitable showdown with LoD but it never comes. Death takes advantage of this and Unholy now finds itself squeezed between two forts, their existence threatened.

Tomorrow, the fighting will renew. I wonder if Loki will be able to sustain its newfound balls and soldier on as the might of the Empire is brought down upon them. Will the coalitions crumble as the Empire strikes back or will the evil war-machine be stopped dead on its tracks? What steps would Unholy take as the Empire threatens to mobilize its reserves against them? Saturday seems centuries away.

Against the Dark Tide, August 2, 2005

In retrospect it now seems that last wednesday's siege was a turning-point for the war that is currently engulfing Midgard. Comrades and Oracle's occupation of Imperial territory has restored confidence among the ranks of the independents and shattered the aura of invincibility that the Empire projects. The independents have now managed to halt the rampage of the wicked war-machine and expand their holdings on the land blighted by seasons of Imperial occupation.

The Empire attempts to bitchslap Loki again but this time around, instead of lowering its gaze and just taking the beating, Loki raises its fists and responds, "It's go time."

The Dark Lord Jello, flanked by his commanders, stands on the eastern wall of his fortress gazing upon the vastness of his enemies' ranks, expanding beyond the horizon. Undaunted, he lets out a sneer and orders his commanders to return to their stations. And thus, the battle for Al de Baran begins.

The opening round sees the Legion trying to retake their northwestern fort from Comrades and Oracle. The battle is immediately reduced to urban fighting with both sides trying to advance street-by-street as the Legion recalls part of their task force to assist in defending other territories. Arcam Cross, along with complementary regiments from their allies Aesir, Kingdom of Justice and Signum Fidei, assaults the southwestern castle garrisoned by the Dark Lord himself. It fails and Arcam pulls-out after a while and heads to Prontera for easier pickings.

On the eastern front, the armies of SVCC, Game Circle, Armored Knights, Rage and other guilds make their advance. The Legion's defensive line is overrun and SVCC conquers the southeastern fort while holding off enemy reinforcements from the north. Game Circle goes as far as the middle agit and plants their flag on it's keep. This, however, overextends their supply lines and soon, the legion is able to cut them off from the rest of the independent army. Game Circle is systematically annihilated but not before the castle is reduced to ruins.

Meanwhile on Prontera, the Dark Lords of Onslaught are troubled by lack of manpower suffered from increasing desertions among their ranks. Both the garrisons in the southwestern edge and the central plains of Prontera are underhanded and vastly outnumbered. Etivac and Rage, sensing weakness and eager to retake their homeland, makes their advance towards the central plains. At the same time, Armed n' Loaded, still in the process of rebuilding its army, and The Acts, another guild previously gone AWOL, attacks from the southwest. Both castles fall despite reinforcements from the North.

Onslaught immediately forms a larger task force to regain lost territory. The Dark Lord Jayfee leads an assault on Kriemhild while the Dark Lord Shady heads for the center. Both attempts are successful and the independents are pushed back. Onslaught then tries to re-establish and stabilize its defensive lines.

Still reeling from defeat, Rage, Etivac and AnL renew their attacks with no less vigor. The defenders of Fadhgrindh and Kriemhild are battered endlessly but they are able to hold. However, the gods seem to favor the independents today as the columns of Arcam Cross are spotted marching from the hinterlands to the North. With Onslaught's rear thinly defended, the soldiers of the Loki Alliance easily breech the outer walls of Skoegul and assault its keep. With their king in danger, the Dark Lords Jayfee and Shady immediately pull back to reinforce their capital. This destabilizes the positions they established earlier and their defensive line expectedly falters and ultimately collapses. The Acts conquers Fadhgrindh and Rage sets up camp in Kriemhild.

The only good news for the Evil Empire comes from Payon as it bears witness to the climax of a great feud between two ancient houses.

News of events occurring in Luina takes the pressure of an imminent invasion by the Legion off the minds of Unholy's command and they decide to take the offensive. Large task-forces sally from Bamboo Groove Hill and the Scarlet Palace to assault the northwestern and southeastern edges of Payon. Both attacks are successful and for the moment, Unholy reigns supreme in Payon once again.

Death's commanders then regroup their scattered troops and break into three forces. Yiding leads the largest group to retake Fort Holy Shadow while the second largest tries for the Scarlet Palace and the smallest of the three feints an assault on the Sacred Palace.

Their three-pronged assault proves successful. On Fort Holy Shadow, Yiding leads his troops to victory, overrunning the hastily prepared defenses of it's relatively smaller garrison. Scarlet Palace surprisingly falls as its skeleton-crew of defenders is quickly destroyed by Death's second task force. Unholy blunders, rallying the bulk of its army in the Sacred Palace when reinforcements were desperately needed elsewhere.

Unholy and Death both end up with the same number of castles as they had at the start. But Death stands triumphant as they have retaken their home-agit, at long last.

Geffen is boring as hell. EBAK is plagued by insubordination and thus, confined to its castle. Epitome tries to provoke them and minor skirmishes occur. The Loki Alliance is busy elsewhere, fighting the good fight, but still careful enough to strengthen their defenses at home and keep an eye on EBAK.

And so the day ends. The blight of the land has been pushed back on most fronts, a glorious day for the vanguards of justice. However, the might of the Empire is far from spent. The Independents would be wise to keep that in mind as a favorable outcome to this war will ultimately depend on the extent of their vigilance and resolve.
