RIVERVIEW: Bond proposal fails by 2-1 marginPublished: Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Voters spoke loud and clear in response to a request from the Riverview Community School District for a nearly $43.3 million bond issue for facility improvements. They turned it down by a 2-1 margin.

The results, issued by the city clerk's office shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, indicate that 1,027 voters said "yes" to the measure, but 2,177 said "no." A total of 3,593 voters cast ballots, more than 1,000 of them absentee. A spokeswoman in the city clerk's office said 35 percent voter turnout was considered good for what was essentially a Republican presidential primary election throughout the state. However, Riverview voters had an additional reason to go to the polls in determining the fate of a long-term loan that would have affected their tax rate for the next 30 years.

School Supt. Russell Pickell and at least two school-connected groups lobbied hard for passage of the proposal, which they said was desperately needed for aging school buildings and outdated athletic facilities. Earlier this year Pickell said the issues facing the school district weren't going away and that he planned to come back to voters with another request at the next available election.
