I-96 will be totally closed in 2014 according to the O/E and Freep.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012205010353

Go to www.96fix.com for more info.

My question is why? The road doesn't seem that bad to me and wasn't it just fixed some years ago? Can't recall when exactly.

Any input?

The Michigan Department of Transportation said Monday that it will rebuild seven miles of I-96 between Newburgh and Telegraph roads in Livonia and Redford Township starting in early 2014.

The $150-million project also will upgrade 36 overpasses and freeway drainage and lighting, MDOT said.

The state said it held a public hearing in March and a majority of those who attended or sent in surveys -- about 1,700 people -- supported closing the freeway to shorten the duration of the project. MDOT said the work will be completed in one season rather than over multiple years.

I-96 will be completely closed in 2014 between Newburgh Road in Livonia and Telegraph Road in Redford for a complete rebuild, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced Monday.

MDOT had sought public input earlier this year on whether to conduct partial or a full closure of the seven-mile stretch. Details are still being finalized, but MDOT expects the closure will take place in early 2014.

“We put several options on the table for the public to consider,” said MDOT Metro Region Engineer Tony Kratofil in a press release issued by MDOT. “At the end of the day, the results favored the full closure and that’s how we will proceed.”

The estimated $150 million project includes full reconstruction of seven miles of pavement, extensive repairs to 36 overpasses within the project limits, and the replacement of freeway drainage and lighting.
On March 1, MDOT hosted a public meeting and presented various options, including the preference on whether to close the freeway or keep lanes open through the work zone. Details on how each option would affect the project timeline were included. In addition, a Web site, www.96fix.com, was launched, featuring project details and an online survey allowing motorists, business owners and residents to weigh in on their preferred option.
“We had tremendous response to our outreach,” Kratofil said. “More than 1,700 responses later, 56 percent of the participants preferred the full closure in order to restore all lanes of travel within one year.”
Originally opened in 1971, this section of I-96 has reached the point that a full-scale rebuild is necessary. MDOT will host another public meeting this fall to present project updates and seek input for aesthetic options.
Residents can follow project developments at www.facebook.com/96fix and www.twitter.com/96fix. or can e-mail the project team at MDOT-96fix@michigan.gov.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

I read that too and knew about the chance for input...gave mine.

I wonder if the 1700 actually drive it to and from work every day or if they just use it locally to go couple of exits. I'm picturing everyone converging on Telegraph from various mile roads, Plymouth Rd, the service drive, etc and all trying to enter at Telegraph and get over left to the express lanes (for an entire year.) Then there's the mess with everyone getting off when heading back west. Not a pretty picture...ugh!

I'm aging myself, but it seems like just yesterday they dug the trench to put I-96 through. I can remember flat land where the freeway runs.

I do, too. I also recall people riding horses on the grassy boulevard on Schoolcraft Road. It used to be so pretty there. I am very old!

Gosh I remember reading about the "Pony Express" in history books. This 'trench' and grassy boulevards to which you refer are WAYYYYYY before my time!

I'm impressed with both of you mastering technology as well as you do, considering your ages  .

Its going to suck for sure, but wow...does it need to be done. The overpasses are in really bad shape. Rip the band-aid off quick! Like they did with the Lodge.
