Dear Parents,

This morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., one of our elementary schools received a phone call from an individual making a threat. A similar phone threat was also made to one elementary school in each of at least three surrounding school districts.

Our Livonia Police Department was immediately contacted and is conducting an investigation. The district is working closely with the Livonia Police Department and following heightened awareness procedures.

All schools continue to follow their regular safety practices and procedures, and are implementing additional safety precautions throughout the day. All entrances remain locked at the elementary schools, and additional staff will be escorting children out of the buildings at dismissal time. In addition, all elementary schools are holding indoor recess for the day. At the secondary schools, staff are posted at all key entrances.

Teachers continue to focus on teaching and learning as the Livonia Police Department works with building and district administration to ensure student and staff safety.

We are following these safety procedures as precautions in our buildings through the end of the day, and the Livonia Police Department will continue to work closely with our school district throughout their investigation.

No word from LPS which school was threatened after a direct question, and Channel Four reports that LPS will not disclose which school.

Threats have been occurring at schools throughout the day from Maine to California

UPDATED: Two Farmington Schools on Lockdown After Morning Phone Threat

Police have been at Gill and Power Upper Elementary schools today after an 'agitated caller' made reference to the Trayvon Martin case.
• By Joni Hubred-Golden

A Farmington Public Schools spokesperson said classes have gone on as usual today, after Gill Elementary and Power Upper Elementary Schools were placed on lockdown this morning.
"We're releasing (students) as usual," FPS spokesperson Diane Bauman said. "The police will be there as a precaution."
She said the police presence on both campuses was to monitor who came and went at the schools, after a threatening phone call was received.

UPDATE: Northville Patch reports a similar threat was received today at Winchester Elementary School. John Werth, Northville Township Director of Public Safety, said while authorities are investigating the threat, they do not consider it "credible". Similar calls were made to Livonia and Redford schools.

Farmington Hills Police Investigative Division Commander David Stasch said local authorities also don't consider this a credible threat; however, officials will continue to investigate and bring charges, if a suspect is identified. He said the school received a second call at dismissal time; however, Bauman said the call was "of a different nature" than the first.
Gill parents were notified via an email from principal Mark Morawski that authorities were contacted after "an agitated caller, who made reference to the nationally-known Trayvon Martin situation in Florida" called the school. Similar phone calls were received in a number of neighboring districts as well, Morawski wrote.
In a note to Power parents, principal Jim Anderson said while the school did not receive a call, it was also placed on lock down, because Gill and Power are on the same campus west of Gill Rd., between Eight and Nine Mile.
Martin is a 17-year-old Florida youth who was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, while walking home after purchasing a drink and candy.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to Farmington-Farmington Hills Patch for updates.

Northville Public Safety Director: Threatening Call to Elementary School Was Likely Not Credible
An anonymous threat, called in this morning to Winchester Elementary School, was one of a few made to schools around the area.
• By Nancy Kelsey

An anonymous threatening call to Winchester Elementary School shook up Northville Public Schools today.
"We don't believe it was a credible threat," said John Werth, Northville Township Director of Public Safety. Still, he added, when children are involved "we never take it lightly."
A male caller, who dialed the school around 9:30 a.m., was likely trying to divert police attention to schools while possibly causing trouble elsewhere in town, he said. Similar calls were also made in other communities including Farmington, Livonia and Redford. The Northville Township police department is working with others to investigate but has no leads yet on who the caller may be.
Werth said the details of the call will not be released pending investigation of the incident.
In Farmington, two schools were on lockdown today after an 'agitated caller' made reference to the Trayvon Martin case. Martin, 17, was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Florida, while walking home after purchasing a drink and candy.
Winchester was on lockdown today and other schools in the district are on a heightened security alert, he said. "We're keeping these areas monitored."
Werth said that while parents are not encouraged to take any special measures because of the threat, they are urged to remain cautious as usual.
"Always keep an eye out for suspicious activity," he said. "Report strange activity or people."

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.
