Livonia board OKs pink slips for 82 teachers

The Livonia school board Monday approved layoff notices for 82 teachers.

The layoff notices are necessary for a variety of reasons including declining enrollment, the budget process and teachers returning from leave, Superintendent Randy Liepa said.

However, as many teachers as possible will be called back, officials said. Sixteen teachers remain laid off from last school year when 121 received pink slips, and two teachers remain laid off from three years ago. That is because some of them are certified in specialized areas, said Dorothy A. Chomicz, the district’s director of human resources.

Board secretary Rob Freeman said signing the teachers’ layoff notices is one of the most difficult jobs he has. “Every year we do this, and every year it hurts,” he said.

The board is still discussing its budget for the 2011-12 school year and negotiating with the district’s seven employee groups. It is seeking to eliminate an estimated $10.46 million deficit through revenue enhancements, cost containments, budget reductions and use of fund equity. The board must adopt a budget by June 30. The budget for this school year was $146.2 million.
