After months of uncertainty and wondering whether Mayor Jack Kirksey would seek re-election, residents got an answer late Friday.

Kirksey ended that speculation when he filed to run for mayor. Councilman Brian Meakin, the only other candidate so far in the race for mayor, could not be reached for comment late Friday. Meakin filed in January.

Kirksey turned in paperwork at the city clerk’s office, joined by his wife Pat and sponsor Council President Jim McCann.

The 82-year-old Kirksey has served for 12 years as mayor, elected in 1996 and 2000, and again in 2007.

“I always left the door open (to run),” Kirksey said. Kirksey said he had thought about it a great deal, but gave it more serious consideration after he was approached by several business people at a luncheon with Gov. Rick Snyder in early March.

“Business people came forward, citizens talked to me, and that was a nice thing, but there really was a lot to that,” Kirksey said. “There is so much started with the nuances, subtleties and direction that it will be important to finish what I started.”

Kirksey points to this year’s and future budgets, and the proposed millage, which is not yet on the ballot, the cuts and challenges with those budgets, and said the next mayor would need to be committed to those budgets.

“The millage is part of that,” Kirksey said. “There’s a lot of challenges and sharing ideas with the police personnel and others in the city, and I’m ready to continue to do that.”

Residents have encouraged the mayor to continue with his strategic plan to protect public services and encourage economic development, Kirksey said. He wants to continue to work on economic development with Mark Taormina, the city’s planning director.

“It made me pause,” Kirksey said. “If the citizens want me back, I should give them an opportunity.

“As corny as it sounds, I have a love for this city,” Kirksey said. “I find that it is exciting every day, it’s different. It’s important to serve the city.”

Kirksey said he respects the opinions of those who may ask why he wants another term at an age when many others usually have retired.

Kirksey said he would not continue to serve nor seek re-election if he felt that aging had compromised his abilities to lead. “I still walk to work,” Kirksey said. “I walk a total of six miles a day. My health is good, I feel great and I’m energized.”

“I would not do something that is inappropriate,” Kirksey said of his candidacy. “My ability is not in retirement. I enjoy working.”

Prior to serving as mayor, Kirksey was elected to four terms as state representative and served as a Schoolcraft College trustee. He is a former school teacher, principal and district administrator.

Kirksey also served as the director of probation for the 16th District Court.

Whoever runs against Mayor Kirksey and spoke out against the annexation needs to remind everyone of Jack's land grab deal. Drive down Seven Mile in Northville and be glad we didn't end up with that property as ours. It's still an eye sore and a toxic mess.

Hear, hear. Jack almost left us with a toxic mess and his developer buddies would have stuck Livonia taxpayers with the bill after the borrowing markets collapsed. Many of us - including the majority of Livonians - saw this coming, but our elected leader lacks foresight or fresh ideas.

I pray we have more choices for mayor than the ones who have declared themselves to date!

"Livonia mayor, 82, to run for re-election"

I truly thought this was a joke someone was posting on this forum, until I saw the same headline in the online Observer!

Regardless of all of the other issues, this is a guy that was advocating stealing from our neighbors! I think most Livonia voters know right from wrong.

Unfortunately, this filing has scared off any potential challengers. 4 more years (perhaps)...

What's the filing dead line?
Here's the May 1 article from the Observer:

http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20110501/NEWS10/105010491/Candidate-filing-deadline-nears?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Livonia|s

"Livonia voters will choose elected officials for mayor, city clerk, treasurer and city council this year.

With less than two weeks away until the filing deadline of 4 p.m. May 10, two candidates are running for mayor. Mayor Jack Kirksey filed late Friday afternoon to run for re-election. Councilman Brian Meakin filed earlier this year for the mayor's race.

Council President Jim McCann, and council members Joe Laura, Maureen Miller Brosnan and Laura Toy said earlier this year they were considering a run for mayor, but none of them, if they are running, has filed yet."....

This article should have been titled: Kirksey Runs for Office AGAIN with More Additional Millages & Fees. Can this city really survive four more years of increased taxes, without cutting non-essentials?

City cars, really? How many city attorneys are there? How many library branches are there? Senior center, really? Greenmeade? City pools? How much money was wasted on a sign, and plaque, and dedication ceremony to "rename" the new, overpriced, courthouse? Legal fees for attempting to annex our neighbor's property? This is ALL fat!

Get rid of the fat, then maybe we'll talk.
