http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20110127/NEWS10/101270639/1027/Meakin+files+to+run+for+mayor+of+Livonia Meakin files to run for mayor of Livonia Councilman Brian Meakin filed paperwork Tuesday morning with the city clerk's office to officially declare his candidacy for mayor. Meakin was accompanied by his wife, Colleen, to turn in an affidavit and pay a $50 filing fee. Meakin, president of Meakin & Associates, a family-owned insurance agency, is in the final year of his second four-year term on the council, after he was elected in 2003 and 2007. Meakin cannot run for re-election to council because of term limits, but felt it was time to run for mayor after speaking with people around the community. “I've talked to a number of people who tell me I'm the voice of reason, and that's probably a pretty good reason to run, so that's what I will run on: as the voice of reason,” Meakin said. Meakin hopes to raise $100,000 for his campaign. He has scheduled a fund-raiser for March 4. Meakin knows it will be challenge to raise that kind of money in this economy, but he believes he can. “I have a number of events planned, I have a strong team and I will get out to different groups and ask for their support,” Meakin said. Meakin believes the next mayor will need to work to protect property values and maintain public safety as a top priority. "The school system and the city worked on a visioning plan,” Meakin said. Meakin believes changes need to be made to consolidate some services. “We're already doing things with the school district and partnering with Schoolcraft College with the fire academy. We have to partner with other organizations that partner with the citizens.” Meakin points to the gas explosion in the city of Wayne, of which Livonia Fire Chief Shadd Whitehead led the western Wayne County fire department response, and the shooting death of Police Officer Larry Nehasil in that public safety should remain a top priority in the city of Livonia. Livonia already is looking at a regional dispatch, and already has the regional SWAT teams and the western Wayne County search and rescue set up with other western Wayne County communities. “With the difficult economic times, we need to work together with other municipalities and communities with consolidating public safety services,” Meakin said. “Livonia is a leader in that.” Meakin expects the next four months will be busy with fund-raising, followed by door-to-door campaigning once the weather warms up. Running for mayor was not a hard decision for him, he said. “It is not difficult when you know what you want to do,” Meakin said. Meakin also wants to create a gathering area, what he calls a “sense of place” in a new development. That may require the demolition of old buildings, or the new use of vacant or tired buildings, Meakin said. “We're all competing for the same dollars,” Meakin said of Livonia and other communities vying to bring new business into their respective cities. “We need to give them a reason to come to Livonia.” Meakin was the first to file. Other council members who have indicated that they are considering a run are Jim McCann, Joe Laura, Maureen Miller Brosnan and Laura Toy. County Commissioner Laura Cox indicated last week that she is considering a run for the office. Livonia voters will be deciding on the next mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and four seats on the council in the Nov. 8 election. A primary election will be held Aug. 2. Candidates have until May 10 to file. kabramcz@hometownlife.com | (313) 222-2591 |

Mr. Meakin, Since when is the city and school district working together? Do you consider Kirksey's help in destroying the school district during the LI "working together"? Most of city council except for Joe Laura stood behind Kirksey not behind the thousands of parents who protested. A prime example of NOT working together is when I watch elementary age students walking IN snow/ice covered roads where there are no sidewalks and climbing over snow banks left behind by the plows to get to the bus stop. Our subdivisions don't get plowed anymore and are full of ice and our students are crossing the ice covered streets. Is this how the city supports the school district? Please share the "vision plan" and what has already been done. |

I wouldn't support this guy if he was the only man running! The city could run itself better than this guy could, IMO. In previous conversations, I have always found him to be both arrogant and evasive at the same time. A weird combination to be sure. I will be voting for just about anyone other than Meakin. |

Livonia mayor, 82, to run for re-election Councilman Brian Meakin filed in January 6:12 PM, Apr. 29, 2011 After months of uncertainty and wondering whether Mayor Jack Kirksey would seek re-election, residents got an answer late Friday. Kirksey ended that speculation when he filed to run for mayor. Councilman Brian Meakin, the only other candidate so far in the race for mayor, could not be reached for comment late Friday. Meakin filed in January. Kirksey turned in paperwork at the city clerk’s office, joined by his wife Pat and sponsor Council President Jim McCann. The 82-year-old Kirksey has served for 12 years as mayor, elected in 1996 and 2000, and again in 2007. “I always left the door open (to run),” Kirksey said. Kirksey said he had thought about it a great deal, but gave it more serious consideration after he was approached by several business people at a luncheon with Gov. Rick Snyder in early March. “Business people came forward, citizens talked to me, and that was a nice thing, but there really was a lot to that,” Kirksey said. “There is so much started with the nuances, subtleties and direction that it will be important to finish what I started.” Kirksey points to this year’s and future budgets, and the proposed millage, which is not yet on the ballot, the cuts and challenges with those budgets, and said the next mayor would need to be committed to those budgets. “The millage is part of that,” Kirksey said. “There’s a lot of challenges and sharing ideas with the police personnel and others in the city, and I’m ready to continue to do that.” Residents have encouraged the mayor to continue with his strategic plan to protect public services and encourage economic development, Kirksey said. He wants to continue to work on economic development with Mark Taormina, the city’s planning director. “It made me pause,” Kirksey said. “If the citizens want me back, I should give them an opportunity. “As corny as it sounds, I have a love for this city,” Kirksey said. “I find that it is exciting every day, it’s different. It’s important to serve the city.” Kirksey said he respects the opinions of those who may ask why he wants another term at an age when many others usually have retired. Kirksey said he would not continue to serve nor seek re-election if he felt that aging had compromised his abilities to lead. “I still walk to work,” Kirksey said. “I walk a total of six miles a day. My health is good, I feel great and I’m energized.” “I would not do something that is inappropriate,” Kirksey said of his candidacy. “My ability is not in retirement. I enjoy working.” Prior to serving as mayor, Kirksey was elected to four terms as state representative and served as a Schoolcraft College trustee. He is a former school teacher, principal and district administrator. Kirksey also served as the director of probation for the 16th District Court. http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20110429/NEWS10/110429011/Livonia-mayor-82-to-run-for-re-election?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Livonia|p kabramcz@hometownlife.com|(313) 222-2591 |

Councilman withdraws from Livonia mayor's race 5:11 PM, May. 10, 2011 | Written by Ken Abramczyk Observer Staff Writer Councilman Brian Meakin withdrew from the mayor’s race Tuesday afternoon. Another mayoral candidate, Patrick O’Neil, filed that day at the city clerk’s office. O’Neil, who ran for treasurer in 2007, will face Mayor Jack Kirksey, who filed to run for re-election on April 29. No candidates have filed to run against City Clerk Terry Marecki and Treasurer Dennis Wright. Six more candidates filed this week before the 4 p.m. deadline Tuesday for the city council race. Steve King, Christopher Martin and Susan Nash filed Tuesday. Rodger Matthews, John Pastor and Laura Toy filed on Monday. They join a field of seven others, which includes Tom Buck, Brandon Kritzman, Lucas McGrail, Susan Nash, Leo Neville, Tom Robinson and Richard Smith. Candidates can withdraw their names until 4 p.m. Friday if they wish to be removed from the primary election ballot. The field of 13 council candidates will be narrowed to eight in the city’s primary election on Aug. 2. The eight remaining candidates would run in the general election on Nov. 8. kabramcz@hometownlife.com|(313) 222-2591 http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20110510/NEWS10/110510021/Councilman-withdraws-from-Livonia-mayor-s-race?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Livonia|p |

Not a surprise at all. You knew as soon as Kirksey filed Meakin realized he didn't have a chance. I just wonder what he's going to do now for a cushy government job? It looks like Lucas McGrail is still looking for work. Oh, and go Steve King!! |

Leo Neville is a great guy. He's conscientious, smart and best of all, not affiliated with anyone/thing. He'd make a great addition to the council. |

There is no doubt that Kirksey filed to run and Meakin dropped out because they realized that Meakin could not beat Patrick O'Neal. I think they beleave Kirksey will win, resign after a short period and then appoint Meakin. |

So how much did Meakin raise at his March fundraiser? And where does that money go now? To Kirksey, or back to the poor saps who donated? |

Well then...there's no sense paying any attention to what any candidate has to say...your auto-vote is what Jack thrives on. Ice with your Kool Aid? |
