Livonia Police seek public's help in fatal crash investigation

By Ken Abramczyk • Observer Staff Writer • August 20, 2010

Police are asking for the public’s help in an investigation of a motorcycle crash on I-96 early Friday morning.

A 54-year-old motorcyclist was killed while riding on eastbound I-96 west of Merriman.

The Livonia resident was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The motorcyclist was riding a 2010 Harley Davidson at 2:13 a.m. when he collided with the rear-end of another vehicle, according to Sgt. John Gibbs of the Livonia Police Department’s traffic bureau. “After the impact, the motorcycle went down to its right side before coming to a final stop,” Gibbs said. The motorcycle was down and sliding for about 200 feet.
The other involved vehicle or vehicles left the crash scene.
The victim’s identity is not being released at this time pending notification to his family.
Gibbs did not know Friday morning whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Police believe a white tractor-trailer may have been involved. It is missing two metal steps commonly located in the “cat-walk” area of the tractor. Police are seeking information on a Ford pick-up truck or SUV with damage to its back bumper and hitch area.
Anyone with information on this crash should contact the Livonia Police Department at (734) 466-2470.
