Montessori center has new home July 25, 2010 A new 16,000-square-foot school for the Montessori Center of Our Lady in Livonia was dedicated Wednesday. Mayor Jack Kirksey, Auxiliary Bishop Francis R. Reiss from the Archdiocese of Detroit, city and community leaders joined in the dedication and laying of the cornerstone. Designed by French Associates, the new building complements the adjacent Romanesque Felician Sisters central convent, which housed the school the past 35 years. The Montessori Center of Our Lady is a faith-based program that serves a diverse group of children. “The space in the new facility provides a warm, inviting and approachable environment for 120 children, ages 3 through 6, who will attend our preschool and kindergarten, half-day or full-day classes,” said Sr. Mary Victoria Richardson, program director. “The children are anxious to begin the school year since they have been watching the new building grow brick by brick.” The Montessori school is situated on a wooded, fenced-in area. It features a canopied entrance for drop-off; a vestibule providing a secure reception area; and vaulted ceiling multi-purpose space for music activities or indoor physical play. Landscaping includes a rain garden, providing opportunities for children's outdoor learning experiences. Sr. Mary Paulita Bikowski, the school's founding director, expressed gratitude to the Felician Sisters for making the center a dream come true. “Serving families for so many years,” she said, “and now watching as the next generation passes through our doors, is a great blessing and a joy.” The Montessori Center of Our Lady, located at 14200 Newburgh Road, is a division of the Felician Sisters Child Care Centers Inc. which also operates St. Mary Child Care Center, providing complete child care programs for infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten-age children. http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20100725/NEWS10/7250419/1027/rss18 |
