School board to fill four principal jobs
July 22, 2010

The Livonia school board is expected to hire four new elementary principals Monday.

The principals of three of the district's K-4 schools retired; the principal of the fourth K-4 school was promoted.

Some members of the school board, including President Lynda Scheel, wanted to save $18,000 to $25,000 by moving the co-principals at two of the district's 5-6 buildings to the K-4 schools and then replacing them with assistant principals at lower salaries.

“I feel we should be looking for cost savings where ever possible,” Scheel said Tuesday.

The district faces a projected budget deficit of $4.2 million this coming school year. The co-principals were put into place about five years ago when the district closed schools and reconfigured the grades in the remaining buildings, increasing the number of students in some.

But the majority of the board members didn't want to move people around.

“I just don't think it's in the kids' best interest to shake up their leadership,” Trustee Dan Lessard said Tuesday. “To me, in my opinion, it's working; let's not fix it. It's not a whole lot of money.”

The board met for a committee of the whole meeting this week in preparation for Monday's regular meeting. It did not take a formal vote but indicated its preference to administrators.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

Marcia Kreger from Cass has also retired. I'm using Everyday Math - why two more principals over and above those that retired?

OMG! Really, Dan? REALLY???

Where were you 5 years ago when it wasn't broke, Dan? Oh, that's right, you were sitting in the front with your freakin' egg timer ignoring every single one of the 500 that showed up to protest the LI.

Where were you when they wanted to 'fix' our math program with an inferior math program? Oh that's right, you were right in front saying it was the best thing since sliced bread, when you really didn't have a CLUE as to how bad EveryDay Math really is. Our math wasn't broke, either, but you sure did 'fix' it, didn't ya Dan???

Where were you when you took Mrs Minsterman AWAY from Johnson and put her at Riley? WHERE WERE YA DAN???? I'd call that 'shaking up the kids leadership', wouldn't you?

And what, pray tell Dan, would YOU consider 'not a lot of money'????? ANYTHING right now is 'a lot of money'.

Either this guy is senile and forgets really easily, or he's just plain stupid! I cannot figure it out. Maybe someone who has better insight into his way of thinking can help me out? ^o)

You read my mind Spanky!! That's exactly what I was thinking. This guy is a complete moron. He consistantly speaks out of both sides of mouth. Wow, what does that say about the people who support him???

Stupid is as stupid does, I guess.

 Continuing to be dumbfounded
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

Awesome quotes, Vanna! I like them all!

I wonder if Oscar knew Dan?! "The only thing that ever consoles man for the stupid things he does is the praise he always gives himself for doing them."
-Oscar Wilde

I think Oscar heard Dan say (over and over and over.......) "It's for the kids" or "I'm doing it for the kids" when he made this quote! Dan seems to think that if he ends every stupid thing he says with one of these two 'kid' sentences, it get's him off the hook. It is an overused sentence and, at this point, nobody believes him anymore!

From the OE letters to the editor:

Link

Livonia Public Schools trustees had an opportunity to save our district money Monday — not a lot, but some.

Four K-4 principal positions are to be filled before the beginning of the school year this September due to one promotion and three retirements.

A suggestion was made from three of our board members to move two of the 5/6 school co-principals to fill two of those four K-4 positions. This idea would have included hiring two assistant principals for the 5/6 schools as an alternative. This move would have saved our school district $18,000.

Even though this amount of money doesn't seem to be a lot, it is — especially since it looks like our state's financial crisis isn't going away anytime soon. With our district's fund balance being project at $300,000, our trustees should be looking for every penny they can find for cost savings.

What is it going to take to get this community involved in our school district again, bankruptcy? We are getting close, folks.

Turned rival? That's interesting.

I was surprised that Scheel was on the other side of the majority.

Why would Liepa go outside the district to find a new K-4 principle when he's got so much talent within our district?

How many employees are still in that Galileo (or whatever it's called) program that just got bumped out by an out of district new hire?
