Cooling center offered for Livonia residents

The City of Livonia is offering its Community Recreation Center as a cooling center for residents who may have a power outage or similar emergency during extreme weather conditions.

The Recreation Center is prepared to provide a temporary place to stay for those Livonia residents who can confirm that they live in the City.

“With the extreme heat and humidity of recent days, residents who may have lost power could need a cooler place to spend the night. Our Recreation Center has cots, showers and other facilities that can provide a short-term refuge for those who may need it,” said Mayor Jack E. Kirksey.

Residents who need help must notify the Recreation Center in advance or arrive before 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday in order to arrange for staffing before closing time. During weekday business hours, those who need the help are asked to call the Recreation Center at (734) 466-2900 or the Mayor’s Office at (734) 466-2201.

All recreation areas of the facility, including the pools, gymnasiums, climbing wall and fitness hub, will be off-limits to nonmembers who use the cooling center.

The Recreation Center is located at 15100 Hubbard, at the corner of Five Mile Road.

For more details, contact the Mayor’s office at (734) 466-2201

That is a great idea! A good way to use our resources. Sometimes a shower can do wonders.

OK Jack, I agree with you one this one.

It's a no brainer, and an excellent use of community services and facilities. I don't know if anyone took advantage of this, but it is great to know it was there if needed. Let your neighbors know, especially older single ones, that this is available in severe conditions. Some may not get the message. You never know how one knock on a door could make a huge difference. Remind them to check availability during severe winter weather also.

Keep this in mind. While many of us would just move to a cool basement, some may not have one or be mobile enough to access it............

Just food for thought.
