Livonia: Thieves taking garage door openers from cars for breaking into homes
November 5, 2009

Livonia police are warning residents that garage door openers are being stolen out of cars, and in at least one occasion, being used to break into a home in Livonia.
The recent thefts and home invasion are similar to ones reported in Livonia between November 2008 and February 2009.

A home on the 34000 block of Coventry was broken into in this fashion and ransacked Tuesday afternoon. Taken in the home invasion were a 37-inch HD television, a 20-inch television and two jewelry boxes containing necklaces, pearls and earrings.

The homeowner was apparently seeing a movie at AMC 20, 19500 Haggerty, when someone entered the homeowner’s car and stole the garage door opener and paperwork for the vehicle.

The home invasion occurred while the resident was away that afternoon, but police suspect that the thief or thieves steal the garage door opener, look at the vehicle registration paperwork and then go immediately to the resident’s home to break in and steal items.

That was the second theft of a garage door opener reported from the theater parking lot in the past two weeks, according to Lt. Greg Winn of the Livonia Police Department.

On Oct. 22, a driver’s side window was broken in a woman’s vehicle and the car registration was stolen along with the garage door opener.

Winn theorizes that the suspect or suspects may have tried to open the garage door of the Livonia home that was listed on that registration but were unsuccessful because the car owner lived at a different location.

“We believe (the suspect or suspects) may have tried to enter the home, but the paperwork didn’t match where the homeowner lived,” Winn said.

Other cities are reporting similar crimes, Winn said.

A Wixom resident’s home was hit by a burglar recently after the garage door opener was stolen while that resident’s vehicle was parked at the United Artists theater in West Bloomfield.

Winn advises residents to keep their garage door opener out of sight. “The car registration can be kept in a purse or wallet,” Winn said. “They can put the garage door opener in their glove box or put it under their seat, at least, where it isn’t visible.”
