Campaigning in the Livonia City Council race is expected to step up now that the general election is only six weeks away.

Five of the candidates finished within 1,000 votes of each other, but then there was a large dropoff between the fifth-place finisher, John Pastor with 3,021 votes, and the sixth-place candidate, Steve Crosby with 1,007 votes.
Maureen Miller Brosnan finished first in the field of 11 candidates with 3,981 votes.
Brosnan believes “voters are ahead of the leaders in Livonia,” she said, using last year's rejection of the annexation of the site of the former Northville State Psychiatric Hospital by voters — which was supported by the council and Mayor Jack Kirksey — as an example.
“They're saying it is time for a change with bold leadership and new ideas,” Brosnan said.
Brosnan said she had every poll covered in the morning of the primary. She expects to continue to keep campaigning, speak with active voters and garner more volunteers: “It's a good old-fashioned grass-roots campaign.”
Jim McCann took second with 3,946 votes, but he wasn't going to relish his success at the polls for long. “We've got to start tomorrow,” McCann said election night. “That's the nice thing about a September election, you have six weeks before the general election.
“We still have to go door to door, talk to the absentee voters and talk about the issues.
“With the state tightening its purse strings, we have to prioritize to do more with less. We need to work with companies to make Livonia a place to do business. We have to fight to keep what we have and fight to get businesses here.
“There's a lot of work to be done, and that's why I decided to run.”
Joe Laura believes he needs to campaign a lot harder and start spending more money. “We have to start going to groups and go to our strengths,” Laura said.
Laura expects the top five candidates to spend more money and print more literature. Laura appreciated the voters who supported him in the primary. “But I never take that for granted, and we need to work and try harder,” Laura said.

Lynda Scheel plans to campaign very hard to maintain the votes she received and get additional ones in November. “I'll be trying to get in front of as many people as I can in a one-on-one basis,” Scheel said.

Scheel was pleased with her fourth-place finish. “But it is a tight race, and we can't sit with this (result) and be happy,” she said. “People will want to know what we stand for and how we plan to move the city forward.”
Pastor put up signs for the primary, but expects to step up his door-to-door campaigning for the general election and enlist more help to distribute campaign literature.
“The money is tighter with this election and it's a different kind of campaign,” Pastor said.
Conrad Schwartz spent Wednesday thinking about the work he has to do to finish in the top four. “I don't have the resources that they do,” Schwartz said. “I'm coming from a long way behind.”
But he also has received e-mails from people who want to help him.
Lucas McGrail said he wants to meet one-on-one with voters.
“I am going full steam ahead and run a very vigorous campaign,” McGrail said. “I'm not going to squander the opportunity. I'm going to make the people proud who supported me. I'll do my best to carry my focus to the voters and bring it home in November.”
Crosby could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning,
