If you hit the Detroit News web site for 9-3-09 there is an article giving the results of a study done. The main theme of the study is to see if the schools are making "Adequate Yearly Progress." The article identifies what factors go into determining if a school gets a "yes" or "no" as far as their AYP. You will notice that two of the three Livonia high schools received a "no" while all of the schools LIEpa likens us to have received a passing grade. I didn't spend a lot of time on this, but from what I could determine this certainly isn't good. Any LIEpa supporters that would like to shed some light/spin on this?

No kidding Mom..not one defense. I suppose that means there really isn't a good reason/spin on this one.
I guess we will just leave it at two of the three Livonia high schools are deficient in an area that every other local high school wasn't. Now BOE, let's get to the business of spending any money we have left. Enjoy your raises Randy and crew and sleep tight.

Search database: Did your Michigan school meet 'adequate yearly progress'?
A greater percentage of Michigan schools are meeting federal education standards, buoyed by improved test scores and the relaxation of the standard for high school graduation, according to a state report released today.

The percentage of schools that meet "adequate yearly progress" rose from 80 percent to 86 percent, with 35 schools improving enough to escape potential penalties that include offering transportation to students who want to go to another school.

Find your school here, picking a county and then a district first. You can compare schools within a district or county, choosing "any" in either category.

Choose a county first, which will limit the number of districts. You can look at all schools within a county or within a district. If you want to look at a specific school, use the "school" list to find the right one.

I think I remember an explanation for this. Something to do with not enought people in the subgroups were tested (something like that).

BTW, in todays Observer, the super of WW schools says they are probably moving to K-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12 configuration. He also said he wanted " be transparent, to avoid the difficulties experienced by the Livonia school district with its recent Legacy effort."

From the Michigan Department of Education's Frequently asked questions:

What are the requirements for a school to make AYP?

A school must test 95% of its students in total and in each required subgroup. The school must attain the target achievement goal in English language arts and mathematics or reduce the percentage of students in the non-proficient category of achievement by 10% ("safe harbor"). In addition, the school must meet or exceed the other academic indicators set by the state: graduation rate for high schools and attendance rate for elementary and middle schools. These achievement goals must be reached for each subgroup that has at least 30 students in the group.

What are the required subgroups for No Child Left Behind?

The required subgroups are economically disadvantaged students, students from major racial and ethnic groups, students with disabilities and students with limited English proficiency. These are reported separately when at least 30 students in a subgroup are tested on any state assessment (MEAP, MME or MI-Access).
